I\'ll second that motion.

But I would also like to add, that this band is really able to write some cool setlists now with a number of songs in the active repertoire, and I\'m glad to see them play around with stuff.  I imagine inverted mayfly means they opened up with the "Ahoy" section.  I love it when the audience is kept on it\'s toes with stuff like that.... keeps things fresh

Honestly, talking to Tim, there was no setlist, just a pool of songs that they picked from.  I actually asked Tim for either an Ahoy! or an inverted Mayfly.  I would actually call the first tune Ahoy! since it was originally it\'s own song and they played TLATG before going into the Mayfly portion.

Also the "Jam" between IG and WTF was Synergy.  Basically what they did was play the composed portion of the song and jam and then went into TLATG. After IG, they came back into it playing on the main jam theme for a couple minutes before going into WTF, then cam back into it again and finished it off.

Also to note, there was a major Love Lake tease at the beginning of CMSS and Matt was teasing PYITE and Landlady at various points of the show.

My setlist varied slightly

Set 1
Jam > Synergy > CMSS, Inner Glimpse > Synergy > What The Funk > Jam > What The Funk > Synergy, Reel Time

Set 2
Ahoy! > TLATG > May Fly > Metropolis, Gladys Pimp > Bass (Solo) and Drums > Jam > Merge

Encore
SOS

All I know is that I asked Tim for an Ahoy! and I got an Ahoy!

There are only a few people still around that actually heard the song as it was before it was tagged onto the end of May Fly.  So, sue me if I think it\'s its own song.  If it was an inverted May Fly, then it should have started with the Ahoy! section and then gone onto the guts of the song; it did not, there was another song in between, so in my eyes, they\'re two individual songs.

I still think of them as 2 separate songs too.

Last night was great, I love Synergy more and more each time I hear it, Metropolis is already one of my favorites and I could not have been happier to hear Merge! :)

Theoretically, though, every (non-inverted) May Fly would then be "May Fly > Ahoy" on setlists, and a May Fly without the Ahoy would still be considered complete.

Not that I see it as a big deal; I\'m not starting an argument or trying to be long winded, just rehashing what I believe was the resolution from a discussion last year. If Leith were here, he would tell you to use the search function and find it. :drew:

I may not go to many shows, but I did in the past and I was at both of these shows.  As you can see, it was it\'s own song and then merged into mayfly.  It may not have lasted long on ts own, but it is a real song.

May 18th, 2000                Taboo Club                New Haven, CT

I: Love Lake, Help on the Way > Slipknot! > No Glove No Love, Light My Fire > Mooboo’s Voodoo,
   Taboo or Not Taboot*

II: Buquebus > Another Brick in the Wall > Attraction to Shade Ditty > Ahoy*, Uncle Freddy,
Mommy What’s a Funkadelic? > Bugs, Summertime Blues, The Vermont Song, Phaddy Boom Baddy

* First Time Played

I: Space City Affair > Beef Barley, Gladys Pimp and Kangaroo’s With Me > Help on the Way > Slipknot! >
Love Lake, May Fly Disarray* > Ahoy!

II: I’m So Glad > The Grand Scheme of Things** > Flower Punk > Taboo or Not Taboot, Moby Dick >

although i grow tired of all the phish comparisons/analogies, i digress.....

it\'s like when phish used to play "Clod", or "The Arrival" or any of the other actual songs that ended up entailing "Fluff\'s Travels" which ended up just being lumped in with "Fluffhead".

For other examples see:

1) "The Landlady" becoming a regular part of "Punch You in the Eye" or

2) "The Asse Festival" becoming a permanant part of "Guelah Papyrus".

-You see Yoda, "Ahoy!" certainly used to be it\'s own song, no one is arguing there.  But it appears that it is now known as just the closing section of a bigger, better thing, known as "May Fly Disarray".

Welcome to the 2000\'s Yoda, where the Red Sox win World Series and nobody cares about Bruce Springteen.

And while i\'m at it, what is that in your avatar?????

To all the .info grammar freaks, sorry if i didn\'t use digress correctly.

I understand the logic behind the argument; I\'ll see it my way.  Just reading my posts about Ahoy!, you would be let to think that I\'m really an ass when it comes to this song, but those that knew me between 99-02 when I was pretty much at every new england/tri-state show new that I was pretty much obsessed with Ahoy!, so if they play the ending to May Fly as they did on the boat cruise last year, it will always be Ahoy! to me

Welcome to the 2000\'s Yoda, where the Red Sox win World Series and nobody cares about Bruce Springteen.

I know that I speak for some of the contingent on site when I say FUCK THE RED SOX!  I\'m actually glad they finally won, maybe the fans won\'t be so bitchy anymore.

On the other hand, if no one cared about The Boss, he wouldn\'t be selling out mutiple nights in arenas and stadiums worldwide, would he?  Bruce will always be relevant long after MMJ, Ween or Wilco are gone.

And while i\'m at it, what is that in your avatar?????

there it is.  i have a feeling this wonderfully played show with some really nice surprises and gems, for the lack of a better term, may never be heard.

some nice highlights throughout.  really great jam with a pretty crazy peak in cmss.  synergy "reprise" >wtf was not bad at all

the AHOY>tlatg>mayfly would\'ve been the highlight of the show if not for the just silly gladys>drum/bass>merge that stole the show for me.  finally merge played the right way, and they played the hell out of it.  the simpleton was scorching too.

it was a good one.

So dyslexic means a song inbetween, eh? as opposed to inverted which is the ending>beginning. that clears things up for me.

Yeah, I know, I\'m a major pain in the ass, bit it gets to be a bit too much when you\'re throwing around inverter, dyslexic, etc... Just play the fucking song and be done with it.  I put the blame on us, the fans, we try and read too much into it.  I\'m glad I\'m not a DB fan because I\'d need to learn too many ways a song can be played.  By that time, where\'s the fun?

except it does.

dyslexic
adjective - of or pertaining to dyslexia

dyslexia [(dis-lek-see-uh)]
Difficulty in reading when experienced by persons with normal vision and normal or above-normal intelligence. A common example of dyslexia is reading words with the letters in reverse order, as in fyl for fly.

Honestly I don\'t see what all the fuss is about here (although I do blame yoda for it).

Its a very useful and straight forward system that allows people to look at a set list on paper and properly understand how a set/song was played.

Its not needed anywhere near as much for bfast as it is for bisco but its still useful.

Its much simpler and easier than continuously notating set lists with long drawn out explanations of how things were played.

May Fly (ending) > TLATG > May Fly

yes thats a great way of explaining that specific setlist to the 10% of fans who even know that mayfly and ahoy was once two separate songs but it doesn\'t do anything for the other 90% of fans or any one who might read the set list in the future. Mayfly is the exception. You still need the system to properly and easily notate every other song that might be broken up and reversed but was never two separate songs.

Go ahead and blame me, I don\'t care.  There is a much easier way to note the setlist without explanations, asterisks, dyslexics, inverterted....

Ahoy! > TLATG > May Fly

May Fly (ending) > TLATG > May Fly

Here\'s a novel idea. Enjoy the show for the music without having to detail out every minute deviation or tease the band plays.  This seems to have started with Phish and multiplied to other jam bands like a bad case of gremlins getting wet.  I don\'t remember seeing notations like this in dead setlists (which I\'m sure there were some teases).

Dead fans were too fucked up to keep track of the cool things they were doing.

Hell the dead themselves were too fucked to know what they were doing.

Yoda, I think people keeping track of all the minute details IS part of the fun.... it especially means people are really paying attention the music, which I think is a good thing.

It ain\'t no Bruce Springteen, these kids have more complex minds than that these days, buddy....

Okay, okay, enough with the bruce bashing.  I love what these guys do, but sometimes (and not this situation) making it too complex takes away from the brilliance of a song.  I myself prefer a medodic tune played straight through, without sandwiching or creating a dsylexic situation.  And "take nothing away from the band", but let\'s not bash bruce until TB has been playing for 40+ years.

This is my interpretation of the mayhem:

I: Jam > Synergy* > Cut Me Some Slack, Inner Glimpse, Synergy Reprise Jam$ > What the Funk#, Synergy%, Reel Time

II: MayFly^> TLATG > May Fly^& > Metropolis, Gladys Pimp > Merge, SOS

*Begining and Jam only
$ (Jam on the riff that leads into the ending)
#with Synergy Teases
%Proper Ending
^Inverted
& w/Rufus Fake Out

I don\'t understand the Synergy Reprise Jam; it\'s either Synergy or Jam (w/Synergy teases).  There is no Synergy reprise.  And whil we\'re at it, the second set opened as Ahoy! > TLATG > May Fly
Title: Setlist: 2008-07-25 - Donegal Saloon; Kearny, NJ
Post by: Klout on August 05, 2008, 01:33:31 pm
reprise might not be the right word for it but its not the composed ending part so calling it synergy isn\'t really right.

There is a 5 note riff that is normally played at the end of the jam to signal they are going back into the ending. They jam out the interlude between that  riff and the ending to varying degrees in different versions.

In this case the band stops playing, starts in with that riff, jams it, but never goes into the composed ending section like they normally do, going into  WTF instead. Hence the \'reprise jam\' notation. If you have a better name for it I\'m all ears but thats the correct technical explanation of what it is.

for the record I hate when people break up songs in set lists saying Whatever Song>bass solo>Jam or queeb>drum solo>queeb and the like. Too me thats nit picking and sells songs short on total minutes and full deservedepicness. Also while we are on the subject... if a Jam> is recognizable from the start as going into a certain song the jam shouldn\'t be notated. Doing that creates a mental divide and takes away from serness of the version in my mind. It seems like a way more epic version if you see and consider it all one song not all hacked up. Thats just me though.

"35 minute queeb" is better than: "(2 minute)Jam>queeb>(3min)drum solo>(6min)jam>queeb"

Second version just butchers it for no good reason.

I know that I spoke to Ren at set break and we definitely heard Synergy in that jam, so that\'s what I call it - "Synergy".  It\'s not a completely composed song, so you either call it Jam or Synergy.  I prefer to call it the latter.
Title: Setlist: 2008-07-25 - Donegal Saloon; Kearny, NJ
Post by: Klout on August 05, 2008, 03:18:47 pm
the only part of synergy in it is, like I said, the jam variation on the 5 note riff that usually leads into the composed ending section.  So if thats enough for you to call it "synergy", so be it. IMO synergy reprise jam with the corresponding explanatory foot note is much more accurate and comprehensive description of what it actually is than just calling it "synergy". Synergy is a huge song and just saying synergy doesn\'t indicate what part of the song it is.   you have to know the riff to understand it properly though. Listen to it if you don\'t know the riff I am talking about.

All that said synergy is fuckin ballerific! Still my favorite breakfast song of the moment hands down. Barely six months old and already taking over entire sets. Made at least 4 appearances in that set.

Also I would love to hear a inverted version or you could even split up the first section in a bunch of different places and scatter it throughout the set since it is has so many different sections. That would EPIC

 Synergy>HLH>Synergy>Rufus>Synergy>Rufus>synergy>HLH>synergy

that would be the sickest palindrome serwhich ever heard.

totally possible too.

lets start the lobbying for that   Synergy>HLH>Synergy>Rufus>Synergy>Rufus>synergy>HLH>synergy
