Post by: FrankZappa on January 01, 2004, 05:39:00 am

pb soundcheck 12-31-03

carnevil 9*, auld lang syne*, Vera st.,Carevil 9, ...^

Set 1: Mayfly Disarray,  [...]

sorry kiddies, thats where i left :(
*These two songs were played over an hour earlier than the rest of soundcheck, and were instrumental. They were played right after the band had set up but before Toads crew was ready.
^This was the new song first played tonight. Adrien told me the name, but I forgot.
Vera St. was sound checked with acoustic guitarist from Bunji also. Carevil 9 is an Emerson Lake and Palmer song (welcome back my friends/to the show that never ends), first time played.
someone else can post the rest of the setlist. hope everyone had a great show and remember I was already back in work when you were just starting to think of going to sleep, you bastards. hahaha

Whoa whoa whoa!  What is that?  Archivist is SLACKING!  Way to blow it on NYE!  Couldn\'t hang with the 3 hour set, eh Pec?  Clearly he\'s lost a step.  And what were you keeping the setlist on that you lost it...a napkin?  Don\'t you usually email it to yourself in real time by hooking the cell phone into the palm pilot, then back it up on the laptop by speaking it into the audience mics?  If this happens again you\'re canned.
Title: The review
Post by: Wolfman on January 01, 2004, 07:00:13 pm
Wow, what a night.  Got home at 11am on no sleep!  The show was a lot of fun.  The musical highlight of the night was the two new tunes.  Both Madness and Dimension 5 are songs that fill in new niches for the band.  Each song can be used to create moods and levels that were previously unavailable, which is a great sign.  As with all new songs, it will take about 4-5 live playings before the set placement and live accentuations are hammered down.  I look forward to hearing these again.  Second set was an Iron Fan endurance contest, especially when combined with the 40 minute encore.  All in all it was about 3.5 straight hours.  Funk was decent as the last song before midnight, though I might have preferred to see Attraction stretch out into this spot.  TONT was a great call for the NYE song.  Everyone was totally rompin\'.  There is no other PB song or cover right now that I would have picked over TONT to fill this spot.  See the Light had a really cool lead-in jam.  The inverted version is pretty cool!   The drum solo in Moby Dick was one of the all-time greats.  There were 3 distinct lives to it.  The first was a fast-paced toms rally with a steady jungle beat behind it.  Then he kept this going while switching to the handdrum.  Finally, there was the roof-shattering blur of methodical berzerkitude.   Rufus was the best jam of the night hands-down...I can\'t believe they had the energy to rage this song out that deep into the night.  Wait, no, I can believe it.  Overall a very strong showing from the band.

Great to meet kindms, realisthis, and bluefunkbhudda.  (First names withheld, though I do remember them)  Also nice to re-meet a lot of people I haven\'t seen in a long time, particularly some Hollis people.

The post-show hotel was a lot of fun.  Thanks to Mark and Evelyn for so graciously sacrificing an evening of hot New Year\'s love so that a bunch of plastered PB hooligans could party in their room until sunlight.  Genius Of The Year award was locked up about 3 hours into the year by Todd for setting off the hotel fire alarm and getting the entire New Haven Fire Deparment sent to the hotel by smoking a bowl in the elevator.  Who brought the smart kids?  PB, of course!

Thanks to all for a great evening, see you in 2004!

What a time to get the fucking flu!  $50 (three tickets) wasted and I didn\'t even get to see the damn show.  I\'m the one who mentioned "Karn Evil 9" (in some other thread) and they have to go and play it while I\'m lying on my couch coughing up a lung.  Not that I\'m bitter, it\'s just that... actually, screw it, in this case I am bitter. :) Sounds like it was a blast.  I\'ll see you all on Wednesday at Tim\'s next acoustic show.

Well, thank God 2003 is over and done with.  It has been a rough year for some of us in the PB family.  Even in my wildest dreams could I have not come up with a better way to bid 2003 a farewell....finally

NYE 2003-04 will be one I will not soon forget.  This band was playing as tight as I have ever heard them.  Jordan, who in my opinion has been the sloppiest PB member for sometime now, came shinging through like a lost soul found.

Ronnie who was my NYE MVP was dropping some of the sickest riffs, licks, and beats I have ever heard from him.  You could see by looking on his face that he was having the time of his life.  And vocally, Ronnie is my favorite, he was reaching and soaring amazingly on his leads.

Another great sight for me was watching Adrian.  He was like a mad scientist keeping the control with some of the most solid drumwork I have ever heard live.  by anyone.

As far as TPalms goes, I say, I saw the psychedelic superhero fly in and fly out.   Amazing as always.  Creative as ever.  Up up and away.

The new songs: I loved them.  Madness is something that will probably evolve into the best PB jam of 2004.

Vera St., though not debuted on nye, it was only the second time i have heard/seen it (the first being FF\'03 acoustic).  Electric Vera is, at  this moment, how i prefer to hear it.  This could evolve into the most widely popular PB song ever.

Dimension 5, I will have do discuss at another time, because I dont really remember it.

MayFly: Love this tune as an opener.  From the opening notes of this I knew we were instore for a great night.  My questions is, is "ahoy" it\'s own song different from the \'ahoy!!!\' at the end.

NGNL: I needed a breather from MFD, so I was glad that this song came next.  i like the message of the song, but as a pb tune, i say shelve it.  Funny side note: somewhere between 5 and 8am, there is a knock on 719.  this chick knocks on the door and asks if i had a condom.  i would have lied and said "yes" if there wasnt a dude standing right behind her droooling his ass off.  "you wont get sick if you wrap your stick", i shouted as i slammed the door good morning....

The Chase: I have grown to love Score a lot more that The Chase, but it is always welcome in my book.

The Vermont Song:  StandOut closer for the short first set.  Everytime I hear this tune I am preying for a little Vt Song>Willie and the Handjive>Vt Song

The second set... for pb....on nye was amazing.   Karn Evil 9.  If there is an archive of message boards, it will be shure to find Karn Evil 9 as a much hoped for cover.

The Attraction>HappyFunkinNewYears>Taboot is just what this band is all about.  Then to go into superflyphaddyphat.....pffffffffft.  Here is where the night just took a turn for the amazing.

Dig:  other than Fairy (which we will get to) , Dig is one of those tunes that if the room aint dancin....no one is dancin.  bad placement was discussed but i disagreed at every turn.  i love this song.  "if you dig me baby you know i dig you mo\'"

See the Light: I noticed a change but the inverted STL didn\'t do it for me.  I was hoping for a LDZ.

Sleeping Beauty: is exactly what i was at this time.  i had been down on this tune since CBC, but after nye, i look forward to seeing it again.

MobyDick:  Adrian. Animal, Too all those who witnessed Adrian on the drums for the first time.....welcome to the laboratory.....

GP&TKWM>Merge:  This is what I am most looking forward to hearing...even above the Karn Evil 9.  This is whereI realized that PB was layin it down. and i didnt care what the bands name was, how many people were there, or any other crap....the Gladys>Merge was for Marcial and all the kids who couldnt be or werent>but should have been there......listen up kiddies....

Then Fairy.....I wont say too much about this song except for the fact that it is amazing...and if you hate it....listen to the 12-31-03 Fairy.......and tell me the problem...

More review/discussion of nye 03-04 to come, but I must leave now.....

Thanks to the PB family for making nye 2003-04 a night for me to think back on with a fond and gracious smile forever....

Gencs

"Ahoy" is not a song.  The ahoy part of Mayfly is just that...part of Mayfly.  Mike Bonanno, who used to tape a lot of shows, always listed "ahoy" as a separate song after Mayfly on his setlists, even though other fans and even band members told him that this was incorrect.  This may be the root of some confusion.  Bonanno, ever the prankster...where the hell is he?

We did pretty well with the video project. Alot of people helped us out, and we only had a couple problems that shouldn\'t really effect it once its edited. But it won\'t be finished for a very long time.

ahh, ahoy! returns.

heres the low down on the song that never was:

ahoy! was written before may fly disarray, however only by a few weeks as reported. as a result, they were two different songs. however, within the course of less than a month, may fly was written and ahoy! started always being played right after may fly, leading to the mayfly disarray/ahoy! setlists. However, I remember asking tim one night at donivan\'s reef and he told me that ahoy! was now part of mayfly, and it would hence forth be played as one song. Around this time, Dave, Matt, Tim and myself started writting setlists with them as one song, but I don\'t know about how other peope wrote them.

so my rulling is this: starting with May 18th, 2000 Taboo Club New Haven, CT, and going forward a month or so, it can be listed as seperate songs with a segway if wanted, but after that point, it should only be written as may fly. (same confusion as pyite>landlady>pyite from phish).

interesting facts:
*May 18th, 2000 Taboo Club New Haven, CT was Cori Paynes first show from what I remeber. This show also ended in a nirvana-esque grunge jam where the drum kit was toppled over and tim pretended to break the SG on the floor.
*Tim joked that taboo or not taboot was written about the club right before or after playing it.
*MayFlys lyrics were written by all four members of the band along with (_____) sorry, blanking on name. from the story as I remeber, they were either camping or hanging out on sombodys porch and being eaten alive by mayflys that were HUGE. Each of them wrote one verse, although I dont know which ones which.

during the day at work i decided to throw in new years toads cd that was so graciously burned for me. it really is a good sounding show...and when relistening you can pick up on things that u forgot or were new and unfamiliar. As far as forgetting, there was a lot, but there are tons of highlights and the drum solo is one of them. Like i think Wolf said, this drum solo was deffinatley cool..started with some toms than into the cymbals..kind of an organized drum solo that just gets nuttier. the new tunes are cool..my faveorite is Madness, but vera st. sounds real good too..anybody else been jammin to this night of Madness?
