II: Psygn, Beef Barley, World Needs Us**, Rufus#> Spunk

E: What So Never the Dance^ > Sex Machine^^, Taboo Or Not Taboot

* The Who cover; first time played.
** first time played.
# w/Bass and Drum duel
^ Bootsy Collins cover; first time played
^^ James Brown cover

I could be wrong, but this is the way I remember the show. There was a bass solo somewhere in the show, but can\'t remember where exactly. Really missed Ron\'s high vocals during "Psygn", but other than that the show was a good one.  Highlights for me where "Tribal Funk Affliction" and "Rufus# > Spunk" (kickass bass and drum duel sandwich).  Need to have another listen to "World Needs Us" to get a feel for it. Sounded like soft 80\'s rock at the beginning with Matt singing, but then progressed to be a bit heavier with some heavy Timmy rifts and continued into a serious jam, and then went back to the soft 80\'s rock melody.

wow.

i have to be candid with you folks, i was really nervous going into last night. i mean, change is awkward and scary; and furthermore, as of late it\'s been the only constant thing from The Breakfast. I suppose i still hadn\'t really coped with the thought of the Breakfast minus Ron Spears... and I was still markedly dazed by the loss upon entering the show last night.

but damn, i could NOT be HAPPIER with the performance!! the guys sounded tight and fresh and SO fluid; they were a cohesive entity propelling themselves from start to finish. Chris is a talented bassist who clearly loves to play, and his positive energy and overall relaxed and fun stage presence really contribute a fantastic element to the band, that just.... fits..... RIGHT.... in!!! and he certainly wasn\'t given an easy introduction either - the guys NAILED Tribal Funk Affliction & Grand Scheme (perhaps my favorite to date) the first set and Chris just pulled it off like he\'s been doing it for years! a totally impressive and amazing debut !

the crowd was equally as noteworthy: a completely packed show, full of happy folks dancing and singing and fist-pumpin away... good vibes floatin around in there all night.... and it was pleasure to meet you, sam [siflandollie] (<---this dudes in a ween shirt rockin out to the breakfast! fuckinaye!) ...and a VERY happy birthday to Mark! you certainly celebrated the first couple hours of your day the *right* way !!!

doughboy was a real treat the first set, and i love \'cut my hair\' but it seemed to confuse the crowd a little bit. psygn was a HUGE opener for the second set -- (i wish i wasnt stuck at the bar trying to get a glass of water from the girl-hating bartenders)... rufus was unarguably my highlight of the second set. have to admit- loved matt\'s song (World Needs Us) ! wish i could hear it again now! it was certainly an intricate structure with lots of distinct parts, which still achieved elements of beauty and raw crunchy rock at the same time... it has a very epic feel to it. it\'s really refreshing to hear some new, fresh voices speaking musically through the band.

i suppose electronically represented words will never truly capture the utter excitement radiating from this princess right now.... but i\'ll try... ;) last night was the start of something tremendously special for The Breakfast. as with all living and growing things, some elements must be shed along the way.... but it is a sacrifice made so that new things can blossom -- after all, where would we be without the ability to evolve? after seeing this band through many eras of highs and lows, again, we enter another - and i am so excited and ready to see the full potential of this new dynamic in the band. heres to an amazing 2008!!! ....and welcome home, Chris!! :)

if I remember correctly, it was a drum/bass jam in scheme, and it was cut my hair>doughboy

the jam in psygn was insane, and it was prob. my fav. scheme to date.

Mark, I missed ya afterwards....the bouncer was being an ass and even made us leave the parking lot.

i loved the jam at the end of rufus [...?] when tim and matt were just gabbin\' to each other through their instruments. we\'ll see if the recording does it justice, but my guess is that it won\'t capture the madness of the musical conversation without the visual aid of their facial expressions to go along with it. it was like two beakers and no bunson squawking hilariously fast.

had a really great time last night. fun crowd with plenty of new faces. i know some people aren\'t incredibly fond of the place, but i always love the jam packed shows at sully’s.

i gotta say that i’ve been worried about the new bassist, but certainly felt a wave of relief seeing him play.. not having ron with the band is absolutely going to take some getting used to, but fortunately chris seems to be pretty capable and it showed last night.

tribal and scheme were obvious highlights of the first set. opening with tribal is always a good sign and it is hands down one of my favorite breakfast songs. it was definitely a treat to hear scheme since the last one i heard was at the daniel st show in september. rufus>spunk was hot! i really need to hear world needs us again..not so sure how i feel about the song, but i’m glad to see a matt song being played. loved the funky bootsy collins cover..totally wouldn’t expect that from the breakfast 3.0 or 3.5 or whatever the hell it was. sex machine was fucking awesome – matt’s playing during that jam made my night! have the guys played that song before?? hope to see it again sometime..

great show...way beyond my expectations for Chris\' first show.  The practice has really paid off, and this transition seems like it will be an almost seamless one.

Ronny will obviously be sorely missed, but he left his spot in good hands it seems.

Rufus was sweeeeet, GREAT energy in that place during it.

Also, I loved the new song. Spoke with matt after the show and he told me the song is about his take on global warming. Matt is going to bring great songwriting talents to this band.  Keep em comin Matt!!

It was great seeing everybody...until next time...

I have such mixed feelings about this show.  Yes it was great, Chris is obviously very talented and I was really impressed how well he knew the songs already but I still miss Ron. :(  I think I\'m going to need a longer adjustment period than the rest of you guys!

However, I did have a great time and this:

Quote
What So Never the Dance^ > Sex Machine^^, Taboo Or Not Taboot

was amazing.  Can\'t wait for Daniel Street! :D

I wasn\'t there, but i think i can safely say that it\'s hard for everybody to have an original member/friend/great bass player leave and this was the first show with a new person/replacement.

seems as though the posts that have been written and those that will come are supporting the band in the next era, and not dismissing ronnie that easily.

Fun show last night.  Very interesting and positive crowd energy.  Adrain was a beast.  you could tell everyone was waiting to see how it would go, but by the second set the feeling of anxiety/questioning were replaced with the feeling of awe and energy that are breakfast trademarks.  My thought the whole night was, if this is the first show with Chris, I can\'t even imagine whats gonna be going down 6 months/1 year from now.
Scheme was great, I was really glad to hear that one.  Rufus was a blast.  "i loved the jam at the end of rufus [...?] when tim and matt were just gabbin\' to each other through their instruments."  Yea, that was hilarious/awesome at the same time.  There was also some cool interplay between adrian, matt, and chris a number of times while Timmy was shreddin\'.  It looked like they were really enjoying themselves.  The James Brown in the encore was sick too.
It was great seein\' infoers again, Elisa it was great to meet you.  The B\'fam sure knows how to bring out the positivity I tell ya.

Got a few dvds at the show too.  Who makes these?  Well whoever you are, THANKYOU!

Chris is the real deal. He was literally hitting every note of the composed sections of Tribal, Inner Glimpse, Scheme, BB, etc. perfectly. They must\'ve practiced like freakin\' crazy with this dude. He also has great improv skills and already seemed to have a great connection with the other 3 guys in the first show. I wasn\'t expecting an "amazing" show last night given the circumstances and they really blew me away.

The energy in that place was outstanding. There were some points where they had these absolutely ridiculous grooves going and I looked around and everybody had that "holy shit, I can\'t believe they\'re playing this right now" look on their face, you know the look. Pretty cool to see 2 encores, 1 year after another 2 encore show, 1/12/07 in Philly, and both ended with Tricky Ways. Kudos to Chris for rocking hardcore and showing no fear up there!! And by the way, I could hear Chris very well last night....he was up LOUD, and it was very, very nice. Only complaint were the loudness of him and Matt\'s vocals, they could\'ve been up a little higher I thought. Overall though, a SER show fer sure. The Breakfast\'s future is so bright, they all gotta wear shades...

This is awesome!  Sorry I couldn\'t be there.  Not hanging my head though....if this is show #1 of the Chris era, just wait till show #20...75...250...things are just getting better and better just like they were at the end of \'07!  It\'s a great time to be a Breakfast fan, that\'s all I know.

Oh BTW whoever asked about Sex Machine they used to play it frequently in the early days if a show were really partying, and since then it\'s stuck around as a 2-5 plays-per-year bustout cover.  Definitely a sure sign of a good show if they played Sex Machine.

Bad move, don\'t believe I observed anything that even closely resembled a kink!

Can you say TASTY? Because that is what this show was all about. I had high expectations going in given what I had been hearing.  Those expectations were blown away to smithereens! Second set was so good it was ridiculous!  Thank you Breakfast for keeping it going! Thank you Chris and welcome to the BFam!

Welcome Chris, I enjoyed the sound of the bass and that thick heavy tone. He and Adrian were locked in together last night and it was something to see/hear. Great show. new song sounded good too.

dont have much time, but that was a really really good breakfast show.

chris played awesome all night, there was never a time where i thought he was lost.  his singing, at worst, was a shade tentative.... like once. at best, he was hitting every note perfectly and he has a good voice.   every song was a highlight, being the first time played by this incarnation of the band and being played really well.  the only time i slightly had the "i miss ron spears" emotion was during psygn, but the jam was amazin.

i was very happy to see doughboy requesting it for over a year and then missing it at utica.  it is a good time to be a breakfast fan...

Christ.  Talk about having one\'s expectations exceeded in everyway.  Yeah, I think we ALL were a little nervous going in, but from begining to end it was like Chris has been with \'em for years.  Kinda scary.  Don\'t know how to feel.  I told Dave that I sorta feel guilty by liking it and having as good of a time that I did.

I was like, to myself, "...just gonna jump right on into Tribal huh?"  Not fully realizing what it was gonna be like at first, I quickly tossed out any doubts.  But to just keep droppin\' bombs over and over it was obvious that they weren\'t here to "feel things out."  Nice little teases and attempts at some misdirection before Inner Glimpse too.

I\'ve gotta say, the segue between Cut My Hair>Doughboy was as good as it gets, completely fluid.  Now to play GS I think showed us all just how good this band and it\'s new member is.  It was so complete and full with some obvious great times being had by everyone on stage.  What a fuckin\' song.

Psygn was a bit emotional at times, I was wondering if Chris was gonna sing Ron\'s parts, I mean if ya think about it, why shouldn\'t he?  He can sing and he\'s already playing all Ron\'s parts anyway.  I think I had some slight audible hallucionations though cuz, I totally heard Ron\'s voice.  Ok, I didn\'t.  Leave me alone.

I was a little mixed on the Matt song, but the incredibly strong playing and jamming shut me up.  I think I\'ll get used to it.

I have to say that the Rufus with the musical language Matt and Tim were speaking to eachother was a major highlight for me, the song was just a monster.  Once again, the segues lately are just getting so good that they almost seem way too orchestrated to be that perfect, yes that may not really make any sense to any of you, but it does to Jen and me, (I think it\'s probably due to the fact that the band is soooo good though) cuz it was just AMAZING how well Spunk came out of nowhere the way it did.  That may also be possibly one of top Spunks period.  It was great to see how much Chris was absolutely lovin\' Adrian\'s solo too, also playing that part they play right before they go back into the main part of the song for just a few quick seconds after the solo was over was a GREAT idea.

The entire "first encore" might have been one of my favorite parts of the night, especially when they took it to the bridge, I almost lost my shit for that one.  If that song is not an obvious cover that Chris\' funk background, which by the way I was REALLY happy to read about, provided is any indication of what he\'s brought to this band, I mean he was leading it and giving cues to the rest of the band for god\'s sake, things are about to get REALLY interesting around here.

And oh yes, thank Christ the second encore which they in my opinion had no choice but to play, was NOT Johnny B. Goode.  Excellent "circle of solos" during Tricky Ways to close out.

Overall, I think we might be the ones "feeling things out," cuz I don\'t think they\'re have having a problem getting yet another "new era" under way....

i think that was rhapsody in blue, but i blacked out pretty bad so that may not be reliable. i do remember most of the show very well, enough to say the TFA was flawless, extremely tight. as was scheme, for the most part. chris pretty much nailed every note of every song. spunk caught me totally off guard and rocked my world. i need to hear the new song again, but i remember it being pretty chill. good vocals by matt on that one. merge and rust teases in te beginning of inner glimpse?  overall an excellent show and a marvelous debut for the new bass player. good tos ee y\'all.

If no one actually audio taped the show... you can rip audio off of dvd\'s... I\'m not well versed in the art of computers but I\'m sure theres someone out there that can figure it out.

I: jam > Tribal Funk Affliction, Inner Glimpse, Cut My Hair* > Doughboy, The Grand Scheme Of Things

II: Psygn, Beef Barley, World Needs Us**, Rufus^ > Spunk

E1: What So Never The Dance^ > Sex Machine > Taboo Or Not Taboot

E2: Tricky Ways

* The Who cover; first time played.
** first time played.
^ with bass/drum duel.
^^ Bootsy Collins cover; first time played

So looking at this set I\'m thinking several things.
1. That first set looks like a monster. No fluff, pure balls and a new, and may I say, AMAZING cover. Quadrophenia is my all time favorite album, and I cant wait to hear/see their take on one of the more powerful tracks.  ..."But I just cant explain, while that uncertain feeling is still here in my brain"  shivers down my spine.

2.Doughboy is back. \'nuff said.

3. Again, more balls and some beef. New tunes are more than welcomed. Again, knowing Matt\'s virtuosity and penchant for the "left field" I can\'t wait to here the new song.

4. Groove funk encore. Not a big fan of JB, even if it is a Bootsy composed JB tune, BUT it still beats the hell out of Shakedown St (or any Dead cover for that matter).

5. Prayed that Tricky Ways would\'ve went with Ron :(

All in all this setlist looks like a solid \'A\'. And it only being Chris\'  first show--well, I think we\'re in for Dimension 6....

Yeah Adrian definately seemed to be in good spirits all night. He was tearin\' it up, and making faces and goofin around.  Adrian playing Who songs fohgetaboutit. Keith Moon woulda been proud.

Inner Glimpse and Doughboy in one set?

Heaven...

My thoughts exactly.

Doughboy was always going to be a toughie - it will always be Ronnie\'s song to me, but Chris doesn\'t try to clone the Save and it works well. The 70s prog fan in me also likes the new tune and as Matt gets more confident in delivering it (he sounds a tad tentative), it will become a favourite I\'m sure

Excellent first show setlist - with a Scheme right out of the traps, wonder when we\'ll get the first full on Queeb?!!

if we are ever in the same room together with a drum kit, i can try to lay/slow it down for ya...i admit, its the trickiest phish beat that jon ever came up with....its all about feel, and accenting hits in a sequence that normally you wouldnt accent them in.
