Title: Anyone here a soccer fan?
Post by: Gordo on November 29, 2007, 10:38:33 pm
Alright, I\'ve been a baseball/basketball/football americano man my whole life, but within the past year or so I have really gotten into international football (or soccer). I can\'t get enough actually. I don\'t know if it\'s because I\'m just infatuated with the new-ness, or if it\'s because I feel like a kid with excitement for a game or match that I haven\'t felt in a long time, perhaps the fact that I learn about a new top-shelf player daily and am intrigued? Whatever the case, who else here is into it?  I\'m in love with the English Premier League, but the UEFA Champions League is where the beef is at. Man U Baby.

I have been a fan of Lazio for years for the simple fact that my friend Federico made me a fan (his hometown)when he was going to College here in the States.
I have followed them ever since I think Soccer is a great sport but MLS level soccer sux! I don\'t watch much English Premier but UEFA I watch every year.

Well then I wish I would\'ve been a hoo haa in high school. I regret not being a hoo haa in high school. It would have been more enjoyable then putting up with cocksucking football coaches and all the beef-tits trying to hump each other in the locker room while calling soccer players pussies.

Yes leith, the MLS is garbage. I like the Italian and Spanish leagues a lot too, the EPL is televised much more here so I think that\'s why I latched on. I also met a group of ex-houligans from Newcastle/London at a bar near my house who are obsessed with Man U and they took me in as their young Yank. It\'s a riot.

i watch English Premier League all the time. i record them on dvr and sit with a beer and catch up. Sadly enough i\'m a Bolton Wanderers fan, i don\'t care that they are second to last.

I played soccer all my life. my father used to be a goalie on a pro team in Poland. so i pretty much grew up with a soccer ball at my feet. High school was pretty funny. i pick up on the cute girls watching the soccer players but would hangout and party with the football players. they thought they knew how to drink........ Pretty amazing they only let up an own goal (U.S.) and a penalty kick (France) the entire tournament.

true. there are many clubs today, though, that have an absurd amount of money. so much dough for the sport is generated worldwide and Man U just happens to have the most supporters worldwide. they are however in a ridiculous amount of debt, largely thanks to their idiotic American owners that took over stirctly for business reasons. theyre actually pushing to have breaks during each half for advertising, hoping to cut their debt.

oh, one difference between them and the NYY though, they still win.

and i love fergie & rooney.

ummm i believe Houston beat New England 2-1 in the championship. New England still hasn\'t won the MLS Cup actually.

Bolton is struggling but theyre still above relegation at 6 from the bottom. Which by the way is possibly my favorite aspect of pro football in Europe. With so much at stake between the Champions League, the UEFA Cup, and RELEGATION, every game is so important which makes every game so exciting.  btw, Anelka for Bolton is a fantastic player.

oh they beat chicago for the East coast championship this year with a bicycle kick? that was the last mls game i saw. Anelka is one of these best players in the league Bolton just needs another finisher. Diouf is good but too cocky

1994 FIFA World Cup
Baggio was the cornerstone of the Italy team during the 1994 FIFA World Cup, leading them to the final after a disappointing start. He scored five goals, all in the knockout phase, and he started every match from the beginning: two in the round of 16 to beat Nigeria (scoring with 2 minutes left of the game sending it into extra time, and then another goal in extra time), one in the quarter-finals to top Spain (the game winner with 3 minutes remaining) and two to beat Bulgaria in the semi-finals. Baggio was not fully fit for the final against Brazil, which ended 0-0 after extra time; he took Italy\'s last penalty in the resulting shoot-out, but his kick went over the cross-bar and the Brazilians won the title. Two other Italians, Franco Baresi and Daniele Massaro, had already missed penalties; had Baggio scored, Brazil would have still had a penalty to win the Cup nevertheless. Baggio has since been blamed for costing Italy that World Cup despite the fact that he singlehandedly carried a weak and aging Italian team to the final.

Baggio finished tied for second in the tournament in goals scored and was named one of the top three players.

Im a Tottenham fan.  No way spurs wiil finish for europe this year, but they wont be relegated either.  Chelsea dont have a shot either unless they use their cash in the january transfer window.  Drogba is hurt and they have too many key african players leaving for the african cup of nations in january.  It\'s a three horse race and they all wear red.  Unfortunate but true.  Oh and the bolton fan, say goodbye to anelka come january

If Tottenham can get through the group stages of the UEFA Cup, they might do some damage. They have a lot of talent (Berbatov could be -great- with a more mature supporting cast, Keane looks better than ever) but their defense sucks and they lack heart. But, another beauty of this game, there are always multiple "leagues" going on simultaneously. If a team loses hope in one, they sometimes get hungrier in the other. Spurs certainly won\'t suffer relegation, but they\'re absolutely not performing as well as they should be.

No doubt they are underachieving.  Two succesive 5th place finishes folllowed by this dismal beginning when they had asperations of the champions league.  I agree their defense sucks, but you are dead wrong about their heart.  To prove that all i must point to is the villa game.  I hope they do some real damage in the uefa cup.  It\'d be great to see them lift some silverware.  The Uefa cup, Uefa Champions League and all the domestic cups are not really other leagues, only other competions.  Keane is playing out of his mind this term, but he\'ll be sitting next to ledley king a few games for a bullshit red card from last week. With Lennon, Berbatov, Keane, Bent, Jenas and the newly budding Gareth Bale all spurs need is a HEALTHY ledley king and another quality center back for cover for when his  knee inevitably gives up again.

Yeah no heart was harsh. I was just thinking they lack at least some, hence their underachieving. But you\'d know more about them, I don\'t follow Tottenham nearly as close.

That red card was complete bullshit on Keane.

I know the Uefa Cup and UCL are technically other competitions, but in a sense they feel like other leagues to me because of the group stages before knockout rounds. It\'s not like the FA Cup or Carling Cup where you\'re one and done.

Yeah I see what you mean.  The european cups are essentially a mini league competion.  The great part about the champions league and uefa cup is that on top of the premiership sides i watch week in and week out i get to watch the worlds best players that i dont get to see on a normal basis (the likes of kaka, messi, david villa, etc)

and defoe finally gets spurs three much needed points.   Here\'s how i see the title race breaking down.  Manchester City and Portsmouth are just pretenders they wont crack the top four.  That leaves the big four.  Liverpool have dug themselves a bit of a hole, but they do not have a lot of reliance on african players which will help come african cup of nations.  This is where they will knick chelsea who unless roman opens up his pockets again (not all that unlikely) they will miss the likes of the hurt drogba, the spark plug known as essien along with kalou and jon obi mikel.  The hated gooners are too young this year and will miss toure come african cup, they need fabregas back soon as next week the big four play one another in the "six pointers"  This leaves my pick for the champions, holders united.  Last years champs + a host of new talented playmaking midfielders.  they could use a little cover at striker and central defence but theyll be getting the medal at the end of the season.  as for my spurs watch for a jump up the table in the weeks to come, especially when king returns from injury, their poor start has all but ruled out europe for next year but with that attacking football who knows.  When the knockout round draw of the champions league is announed ill will give my predictions then.

Perfect day in the Premiership. A much needed loss for both Arsenal and City. Glad Tottenham was a contributing factor, they needed a victory as such to get things rolling.

Nice analysis zero. The arrival of the African Cup is definitely going to make things very interesting. I agree and hope you\'re right about United benefitting, making a run for the repeat.

Damn shame I\'ll be missing Big Sunday coming up. My brother is getting married on Saturday and I won\'t have access to the footy madness come Sunday morning. This is great though, excitement in the league jumped up a notch today.

Arsenal is a totally different team without Fabregas and Van Persie. Keep \'em down...

Tis  a damn shame you\'ll miss next weeks matches, gotta love it when the big four play...if you can get to a computer though both the bbc website and soccernet.com due live streaming commentary of every premiership game if youre jonesing for some scores and news.  skysports.com is also a great place for up to date news.   and may i just echo your point of fabregas and van persie down with them and down with the gunners

Who is televising each game? Either on FSC? If I have to I\'ll record and discipline myself to hold off on results until I get home. I just can\'t believe I\'m missing Man U against the murdering scum at Anfield. The Devils will be celebrating and I\'ll be talking to my family about how pretty the chairs were at the reception hall. MEH.

The CL draw has been announced.  Some great ties.  Liverpool-Inter, Arsenal-Milan, ManU against my darkhorse Lyon.  What a great round of 16, should be some great football.
