All in all this was one of the most fun weekends of my life.  The shows got more and more intense as the weekend progessed and even though we all got less and less sleep, everyone raged harder and harder.

Last night was amazing.  Lawn Boy was so on point I felt like I was seeing Phish live.  The chemistry between each band member and the crowd was electric, and clearly having Mike Gordon sit in on "I Will Sur-veev" was a highlight.

PS:
Stevpav and I were hoping for this food for thought (for no apparent reason other than we\'d been singing the chorus all weekend): "If your nose is stuffed, you should blow it!"...a la the teacher from "The Wall."  I\'m sure we annoyed the people in front of us by screaming it at the top of our lungs.  Good times.

PPS: Good to see everyone who came out after what\'s felt like a long fall!  I\'m looking forward to Stone Church...at which point I should be a HOMEOWNER!  I\'m buying a condo and we\'re supposed to close on November 15.  Hurray.

hahaha...gordo, my bad, i meant to put that it was my first freakout(in the chase\'s thread)....and holy hell it was awesome!  i truly believe that was the best breakfast show i\'ve ever seen. and that was the most fun i\'ve had at any show!  SOAM was by far my highlight...and of course so was Mike Gordon.  oh yea, and gladys was FREAKIN awesome...except for that wah wah noise from the bass...come on now chad, stop playing with my hat and do your job  ;)  DW, it was fun dancing with ya to gladys.  i just had to find you for that one.  spaceman - you were epic last night!  so much fun!  oh...and huge kudos to gencs for grabbing me a beer when those fuckers of "bartenders" kept passing right over me....the bastards!  i shouldn\'t have tipped them...meh!  All in all - best show ever!  and hopefully with the appearance of gordon even better days will arise for Breakfast.

I think Mike was there for all of it.
Definately HUGE that he sat in.
I just wish it had been a different song.
The band brought their A+ game for sure and definately nailed Lawn Boy.
I was losing my shit all night, completely freaking out, so pumped.
Oh btw, best set break dance party ever. Ser crowd very rowdy, very much feelin it.

Mike was there for the whole show as far as I know, just sitting at the bar. He was definitely there for all of Lawn Boy. I asked him what was going through his mind during the cover, he smiled and said, "It was awesome." I would\'ve loved to see Timmy tear it up with Mike on an extended jam but the Clifton \'surveev\' was great.

Watching the band during Lawn Boy was really amazing. It was like watching child geniuses being challenged by past masters. Reba was my highlight of the album. I was pumped and a bit nervous going into it, and they nailed almost every note of the composed sections, then pulled off one of their greatest jams I\'ve ever heard. It was absolutely surreal to be hearing this music live again, and by my favorite band these days. Reba stood out, but everything else (for me) was so solid that I really can\'t put "highlight tags" on specific tunes. I loved it all.

We can\'t forget how fucking sick all the originals were too. GREAT way to open the show with jam > Queeb. The transition from Buquebus > SOS was recockulus and Gladys was on fire. Really the whole show was awesome.

I was a little surprised with the turnout. The back half of the room was pretty empty and it\'s not a huge room by any means. Sound quality was average - above-average (as you got closer to the stage). The crowd that was present was getting down. Tim\'s costume was phenomenal, I think he should actually grow the huge stash permanently. Adrian wearing the Fishman get-up was special.

It was a pleasure meeting and hanging out with y\'all. Dinner at the Ice House was a delicious start with great company -- Leith, Todd, Robyn, Jocelyn, James.... and then the long list at the show and after -- Spacey, Wolfman, Dave, Holly, Elisa, Melissa, Peaches, Billy, Lexington, ds, and many more that I can\'t remember right now. You guys are fucking great and made the night that much better.

Until next time...........

Unbelievable show!!  This was my first freakout and The BreAkfast took me on a psychadelic adventure.  Hope i didn\'t freak anyone out too much with my sailor mask. anyway, lawn boy was epic.  I was really feelin the bouncin around the room.  That was better than any i have seen phish play (and i have seen phish play.)  Gladys was also out of control.  You know its a sick show when you sit around all next day listening to old bfast shows to ride out the post-show high. Thank you gentlemen.  This was also the first show i\'ve seen wit the new keys player. Welcome to the family.  As is my new custom, i brought two newbies to the show last night.  obviously they got owned.  they thanked me multiple times and my buddy ed said, "i havent seen a show like that in a long time." I realy love seeing a newbie get their breakfast cherry popped....i guess im sick like that.  Good to see you all who were there. good times, good times.

ps: sicky posters. props to whom it may concern.

monumental show last night. i\'m literally still in shock and trying to make sense of everything that happened.

the buquebus opener was a pretty ballsy statement, but basically hinted that the show was going to be absolutely ridiculous. i don\'t think that i have actually seen the breakfast open with buquebus before.. buquebus>stl>buquebus>sos got the crowd going real quick.. i\'m glad that son of simpleton made it into the setlist of at least one of the shows this weekend.

as nervous as i was about the band covering lawnboy, i gotta say that they fucking nailed it. each song was played so amazingly.. reba+soam were obvious highlights. i didn\'t really see the point at first, but i guess splitting the album over 2 sets guaranteed that there would still be a pretty packed crowd after set break. shit got pretty crazy during bathtub>antelope. i definitely lost my shit but wasn\'t too embarrassed as i realized that everyone around me had pretty much lost their minds as well.

fft was alright..gladys was HUGE.
the tony clifton/mike gordon encore was fantastic.

not that i have ever really thought about it, but i never imagined that i would have a conversation with mike gordon while dressed like blanche from the golden girls. that was something special.

without going into great detail i would like to say that, that was awesome.  Defiantly the most fun i\'ve had at a show in a loooong time.  I do have about 70 pictures that i will put somewhere on the net and will let you all know where they are when i finally regain some of the energy that was sucked outa\' me this weekend.  Fluffhead man... i have a good picture of you and chances are, if you were at the show, i have one of you too.  Thanks to all of you who showed up and made this such a fun experience and certainly, thank you Breakfast and Mike.

ok here we go... most of these are pictures of the people that I know personally, but i did take pictures of most everyone at the show...  that being said... i was kicked out of the show... i think during set break or sometime around then.  I was booted for taking pictures of the audience from on the side of the stage, bass side.  that is when promptly took off my Fred Flinstone costume and put on a shirt and barrowed my buddy\'s devil mask and came right the hell back in and took some more pictures.  The girls dressed as Wilma and Betty were cool, although, i did not know them and the costumes were coincidental.  Some of the pictures are out of order....   ....   .

scroll to the bottom first and go up for the almost correct order.

what can i say that hasn\'t already been said? this show was absolutely off the hook. the energy was unbelievable in that venue, i thought the walls were going to collapse. absolutely awesome crowd, and a powerhouse performance by the band. i spent most of the night running around in a starstruck frenzy.... i honestly haven\'t been driven to such a state at a breakfast show since the puppethouse back in 2005....

so awesome seeing everyone this weekend... and great to meet ya weekapaug and gordo!

setbreak dance party = hottttness
latenight hotel raging = less than par for the breakfast crew, but we made the best of it ;)

can\'t wait to see the uproar from the mike gordon sit-in.... i keep checking jambands.com for that headline ;)

Immediate top 3 breakfast show in my career- rivaled by last night of the 4-20-05 run and maybe nothing else, but i\'d have to go back and look

people were totally into it all night, the breakfast tunes were ser and tight.  call me crazy, but i think the bathtub gin was the best jam of the phish tunes, although reba almost made me cry.  gladys pimp steals the night in my mind- TOTAL THROWDOWN!!!!  I raged so hard I literally injured something in my left shoulder, still pain when i lift my arm up above my shoulder.  Still totally worth it.   My God.

Certainly it was great to have the bass player from my favorite non-actively touring band play with my favorite actively touring band, but it was even cooler to hear the story Mike told after the show about how they won the studio hours to record lawn boy in the battle of the bands when Fishman was lowered from the rafters totally naked.  Fishman was supposed to take a vacuum cleaner solo over a little bass line by mike, but the vacuum cleaner was unplugged!  so trey tried to save the day and unplug something and plug in the vacuum, but he unplugged the bass amp!!       needless to say they won the event, and now we have lawn boy in the annals of both phish and breakfast history.    i\'m down with that!

pleasure to meet weekapaug and gordo as well!!

on the topic of the gordo sit in......

to me it was a very awesome thing for gordo to do!

he basically gave the band tons of respect just by showing up and tons more by sitting in on a very short tune.

it also reduces the gimmicky factor and adds ridiculous amounts of credibility to the performance of the album and makes it that much more ophishal phace ownaage.  "Mike approves."

The shortness and song selection of the sit in says symbolically that It was basically a MAJOR tipping of the cap by gordo and a somewhat passing off the torch from the godfathers of this shit to the young bucs who are ready to take over.

So Mike if you read this or even if not...Thanks alot!!!!

jking - yeah sorry, my youtube clips are staticy.  they were taken with a regular digital camera, and combined with the fact that the volume is always set to 11 at shows, the camera can\'t really handle audio that loud without static.

unfortunately, that is all that i have got, but it is better than nothing right now.

^^ well said sir klout.

i had so much fun at the freakout!!!  i wish i could re-live it all over again, definitely a memorable and magical show.  my legs are still sore as hell, too many rock star jumps.  the whole show was fucking ill, i still can\'t really describe it so thanks to those who already chimed in.  the only thing i can say that after the mike gordon sit in, shit got crazy and it was LOUD!  it was great meeting all new .infoers that i\'ve never met before (gordo, weakapaug, ds as fluffhead, the guys on the 3rd floor, leith- nice to see you again).  many thanks to postom for the ride, (i wanna get my cheese sometime this week!)  i wish all breakfast shows were like the freakout!  great costumes all around.  pics will be posted shortly.

Breakfast in the future.  Anyway ya slice it your pretty creative in your analysis.

Ah well, too late for me. Had hoped this would be up for me to listen to in the two and a half hour drive back home tomorrow night after going to see Rick Wakeman in concert (where I will be sporting my new Breakfast tee). Still, the best things come to he who waits...

So the news blip will go to jambands.com maybe someone wants to write a review for Jambase???

Done and done.  I brought the A game for that review.  I think it will get published.  I will not post it here right now because they want exclusive material, so if it\'s not up in a week or two I\'ll post that review here for Breakfast fans.  Until then, here\'s my more informal, personal take on the matter :)

BEST FUCKING SHOW EVER!!!!

Hehehehe.  Well, in the words of The Late and Great, "That\'s debatable", but the terms "Instant Classic" and "Automatic Top-10" are very safe descriptors, as are all of the other big words and positive superlatives that have been thrown around this thread such as "nailed", "crucial moment", "unbelievable" etc.  Lawn Boy met and exceeded all expectations I ever had, and my expectations were pretty high.  Here\'s what I posted on these pages back on September 22nd:
Quote
Personally, I would lose my #&^$ if The Breakfast covered a Phish album and would love every second of it. In fact, it would make a serious run at being the greatest 90 minute stretch of my life. And any good fan of The Breakfast or Phish would feel the same.

It worked out even better than that.  I think I hugged damn near everyone in the room during Squirming Coil.  Definitely everyone I knew, anyways.  My hands were on my head in legit shock and awe in the rare moments when they weren\'t hugging someone.  When I fully grasped what was to come, i.e. Reba, SOAM, Gin, and Antelope, I screamed "YES! YES! GO GET \'EM BREAKFAST!" so hard that it made my throat hurt for the rest of the night.  Each one of those tunes was better than the one before, they just kept getting more and more into it.  Heck, we were even RAGING to My Sweet One for crying out loud!  Nothing against My Sweet One, but nobody ever rocked as hard to that song at a Phish show as we did Saturday night.  Nobody could stop dancing even during setbreak, I remember big groups getting down to Funkadelic, Thriller, and The Message and several "Best setbreak ever" comments.  What a party.

The Gordon sit-in was great, and in classic Phish style, it was treated with a level of zaniness to relieve the pressure of the moment.  That ludicrous performance of I Will Survive was undoubtedly the most uninhibited moment I have ever seen from The Breakfast while onstage.  It has to be seen to be believed.  Finally, I loved the 5-song double-encore.  I\'m pretty sure this was my first double-encore since my first show.  The crowd was INSANE after the set and the first encore, and got everything they wanted after the 4-song second encore.  It left everyone feeling really good and satisfied, not that uncomfortable semi-letdown when the lights come on after a 1-song encore and the place is begging for more.  I know some people weren\'t totally happy with Honey Butter being played for the third time in three nights, but I didn\'t care at all.  To be fair though, I understand that view of it and I might have been in the same boat were I not a sucker for Honey Butter.

Anyways, I was really glad that they ended 20 minutes before curfew so everyone could hang out together in the room for a while.  I really needed that time to decompress from what had happened and to just be in love with everyone in the room.  I will never forget this show.

Finally, the potential positive aftershocks and ramifications of this show are very real and I\'m eager to see what comes of it.  To quote myself again from last month,
Quote
The key word in Breakfast marketing needs to be DIFFERENTIATION ... the band has never really had any PR whatsoever.
Well, here\'s a colossal dose of PR and differentiation.  Nobody else has pulled off a feat quite like this...covering a Phish album in Burlington with Mike Gordon watching.  It\'s free stories like this that can take The Breakfast to the next level.  Of course, I also posted somewhere that the backlash from idiotic "fans" hating on bands for covering Phish could be equal to the positive reaction, but right now I don\'t believe that anymore.  I hadn\'t considered the possibility of an actual member of Phish sitting there and enjoying the whole thing, putting the ophishial stamp of approval on every moment.  That\'s what Mike\'s presence brought to the table...a validation for the outside world that this was indeed legit, worthy, and even downright badass.  Now that I\'m on the other side looking back at it, it was so incredible and well executed and openly blessed by Mike Gordon that there\'s no way any sensible music fan could take this moment down.  It\'s all good.  May the after effects of this moment spread far and wide for The Breakfast.

The Breakfast are going to have a killer 2008. It could be the year they break out, as long as they tour nonstop ALL over the country and we the fans make sure the word is spreading so people can realize how fucking insane this band is.

you said it wolfman....the gordo sitin debunked all haters who would automatically hate on it without even being there or listening. so once again...thank you mike!!!!

On the topic of the set break dance party...it\'s really ironic because it reminded of being at a phish show because thats what used to happen at phish shows and I never see that at bfast shows! Its just the result of the feeling that the breakfast replicated of experiencing all that happy dancey phishy fun music with the the thrill of more to come very soon....some of my best memories of phish shows are the dancing and interacting with fam in that ecstatic set break elated state which is what set break at the freak out brought me back to!! hellz ya.

yup it\'s pretty much a show under 3 hrs or less every weekend as long as they are in the north east. There is a pretty darn good other music scene there too. Lot\'s of Dank venues that book good acts. i.e. red square, rev hall, the egg, the palace, pepsi.

matrix meaning audience and sbd audio matrix or audio and video matrix?

gordo were u dressed up? I wanted to meet you.

I was not. However, I was the sexiest beast in the place, you must\'ve noticed my thick eyebrows or caught my bold scent, heard my lion-like voice perhaps.

Honestly I might\'ve met you, I don\'t remember everyone I met as far as .info names....?

it was good though because there was mad room up there after everyone jetted

Nice pics dave.

I\'m pretty sure you have the only pic of me from the weekend. I now know for a fact that I was actually there. Sweet.

It\'s funny I don\'t think anyone has a picture of Tim with the stache. I don\'t think I did either.

I have to get my shit developed. I had to go disposable. That\'s what happens when you bring your camera case without the camera. Fucking idiot.

wasn\'t me who was laying down nasty ripps... as much as i\'d like to take credit for it... i must pass the blame on to the pregnant nun.  She\'s scandalous.  Now that you mention it i do remember being blamed for stinkage and thinking to myself that you were all crazy.  Oh and if i were to have ripped one, I would have cleared out more than just one or two people, perhaps a 15-20 foot radius!!

not a bad fucking show.

was glad that we all got to spend it together.

after Lawn Boy was finished, I had never been so excited to hear the Breakfast play their own tunes again.

Highlight of the night was definitely being able to rage the show with everyone. High-fives all around.

I have had no voice since Saturday after the show which is slowly returning today.

Great to meet all of you.

FWIW, I definitely enjoy a Breakfast mosh.

The Breakfast are going to have a killer 2008. It could be the year they break out, as long as they tour nonstop ALL over the country and we the fans make sure the word is spreading so people can realize how fucking insane this band is.

I think .infoers should have a contest to see who can bring the most newbies for 2008.  Some kind of sweet prize might be in order.  Thoughts?

Well, I couldn\'t make this show due to work, but obviously, I\'m thrilled that the band took on the challenge of covering Lawn Boy, that Gordon was apparently impressed with them and sat in, that everyone had such a wonderful time with the music and otherwise, and that the crowd was solid both in terms of numbers and enthusiasm. I checked out a lot of the photos and was quite amused with many of the costumes.

And for what it\'s worth, I was glad to be the middle man and get the setlist calls from Dave, especially that second one around 3 am where I learned about the Gordon sit-in. I think it was important to get the setlist up as soon as possible and was all too happy to help. And also for what it\'s worth, I had a great time at the two prior shows, thought Friday was excellent, and was glad to meet Klout and re-meet Leith. Hopefully, I\'ll soon meet some other .info\'ers who I don\'t know at future shows.

Anyway, I will be listening to this show soon, and though my ears alone probably can\'t come close to capturing the atmosphere, I\'m eager to hear the performance, especially the much- ballyhooed performance of Lawn Boy.

All 30 were sold when I left, though the artist (Jon Warner) might have a few more... it\'d be worth checking out... it might be up on one of the following sites:

That\'s great news.

They\'ll belong in Phish\'s class when they start producing studio albums half as good.

This weekend made me realize how good Phish really is (or was I guess).

And I do not mean to take anything away from TB, my point is that there is a HUGE grey area where, to me, Phish are still the kings on top.

TB\'s live experience is enormous already, but they won\'t reach arena status with their sub-par vocals/lack of high quality studio work.

I love this band more than any other, but still realize they have something missing to connect to people that aren\'t engulfed in the jam scene, a boundary Phish broke down with some really incredible studio work that appealed to even my Gloria Estefan-loving mother at times.

Phish\'s voices weren\'t great live, but they sounded damn good on their albums and put together incredible melodies with hooks without abandoning their roots. That\'s the x-factor. I guess you could call it righteous-jam-pop, I dunno.

Anyways, do I think The Breakfast could sell out theaters and throw down with a few thousand strong? Absolutely. That\'s where I hope to see them. They are more than deserving of Biscuits and Umphrey\'s status.... Phish, not so much imo.

Ok, that waitress also helped make my weekend (fade to HeadieJedie, Stefpav, and Deevahgrl trying to get their grease on at a diner on Saturday morning...)
***************************************
Waitress: I don\'t know HOWWWW I\'m carrying 3 coffees at once! *slight drool*

Stefpav: Oh yeah, Hot tamale!

Waitress:  .....my husband has an apron.

Us: .....*???*....

Waitress: It has a tamale on it.

deevahgrl: hey, that\'s great

HeadieJedie: what the...?

Waitress:  It says Hot Tamale.  *laughs the scariest laugh I have EVER heard*

Us: ....heh, heh, hahaha...?
***************************************

listening to this show does make me wonder why the band hasn\'t invested in vocal lessons by now... across the board i\'m hearing "great music but the vocals are worse than the biscuits..." and thatts hard to argue (the \'he was doing a tony clifton impersonation\' only works sometimes). tim\'s got a voice, he just doesn\'t use it to its fullest... some of the harmonies (where they have obviously practiced them) sound *great*, but then back to overly hammed-up cheesiness. is it insecurity in his voice? too much energy coming through? trying to be unique? either way, its *definitely* time...

^I absolutely agree, and im glad someone finally brought this up.  phish, for example, reminds me of the breakfast\'s vocals in their mid-late 80\'s shows.  instead of getting lessons, they simply exaggerated their voices to make them sound goofy so people wouldnt take them seriously.  in fact, when i played the lawn boy set for my friend, he said tim\'s voice in SOAM sounded like "Gordo when hes trying to sound like an asshole."

With that said, phish did get vocal lessons, and it helped immensely.  I was talking to my other friend about the breakfast recently and i told him that was the only thing i think the breakfast lacks.  They dont need to be proessional singers, they just need to be able to pronounce their voices so you can hear what the lyrics are, and be able to sing along.  I hardly know the words to ANY breakfast songs, and I listen to them constantly

As much as people knock phish for nonsense lyrics (which i admit a lot of them are), they still were able to write catchy lines that people could sing along with, and articulate them loudly and clearly so the audience can enjoy them.  This is definitely an area that the breakfast can/should work on.

From what I recall (I streamed a bit of the show while doing other things the other day), Ludwig Von Ostreicher\'s voice was just painful to hear.

Can\'t wait to listen to this show over the weekend.

I don\'t know I have always thought Phish\'s vocals sounded abysmal live... thoughout their whole career.

I think Tim actually has a decent voice; he just doesn\'t know how to use it.

I think the Breakfast\'s vocals are an opportunity for improvement, but still they\'re usually at least OK and at times very good.  But this show was especially tough vocally...I\'m not sure why that happened.  Tim and Ron have come really, really far with their vocals over the years though.  Listen to any tape from 98-00 and you\'ll see what I mean.  Tim\'s solo shows have helped him along and Ron has gone from little singing ability back in the day to really good in his parts.  We\'ve heard The Breakfast sound great vocally plenty of times doing all their songs, including heavy vocal arrangement tunes like Beauty Sleep, Episode 2, Vera Street, and Overexposure to name a few.  It just didn\'t really happen at this show, which is too bad because it\'s heavily circulated.  However, The Breakfast do have complex and meaningful vocal arrangements throughout their catalogue that they usually nail pretty well.

As for Phish...they were tough at first but if we\'re talking say maybe 1995 and later, they\'re so good vocally that it\'s easy to fall into the trap of thinking they\'re bad if they happened to be less than perfect.  I\'m not saying Trey is Marvin Gaye up there but they hit everything and they had more complexity, originality, and difficulty in their vocal arrangements than most bands have in their entire songs.  And they\'re up there hitting them every night so consistently that you stop thinking about it and take it for granted.  How many Phish songs should I name that have crazy vocal parts that they would nail every time and you could just forget how good they are?  Split Open and Melt, Theme From The Bottom, I Didn\'t Know, Halley\'s Comet, Geulah Papyrus, It\'s Ice, Character Zero, The Curtain, Famous Mockingbird, Vultures, Mound to name a few...these are insane vocal tunes.  And sure Phish weren\'t The Platters either, but for some emotion how about Trey on When The Circus Comes to Town, or Page on Velvet Sea and Strange Design, or everyone on Roggae or Hello My Baby?  Phish could sing, don\'t forget it!

the breakfast singing (most) breakfast songs is much much easier on the ears than the breakfast singing lawnboy. That said, vocal lessons can only help so why not do it.

Trey has the voice of an angel.

I really think Tim\'s voice is good and has only gotten much better since I started seeing the band.
Ron\'s voice is great for covering Sting and Rush
Adrian fills the gap, I\'m glad he\'s doing Drunk Monk Bar now, he\'s starting to sound pretty good doing it.
Matt seems like he has no practice singing, but I don\'t think his voice is inherently *bad*.

The main thing for The Breakfast is for these guys to realize their vocal strengths and weaknesses and to write songs that take advantage of their strengths and avoid their weaknesses.

Vocals like those in the halfway-point of Buquebus, with weird timing and funkyness overall, that\'s what I\'m talking about. These vocals may not have angelic overtones and they don\'t seem that difficult to sing, but they way they sing it is fun as hell.

Tunage is a good example of a new song that has vocals that kick ass and suck side by side. The funky fast part that Tim sings and then Ron sings "Tuuuneage" rules. Tim is great at singing like that and Ron\'s totally got that high voice background vocal covered. This part of the song kicks ass and its mostly thanks to the vocals. But then the part right after it where Tim is sorta just talking, its definitely lacking. I spend this part of the song waiting for the other part of the song to come back.

Personally I\'m not worried about their vocals, I love it. I just wrote this in response to the comment that they have worse vocals than Bisco. I think this is true sometimes but The Breakfast have much greater potential if they keep their vocals funky and fun.

Ya know, except for Good Things or Mooboos. Tim\'s got that covered and I think he does a good job.

Mooboos, Tim sings it all emotionally using as clean a voice as he can muster, but then there\'s that part "In my thoughtssssssssssssssssssss" .. That rules. We all know that rules. Breakfast rules at stuff like that.

:that:

I have been thinking the same thing.  There are some songs I can sing like the original studio performer, others that do not sound nearly as optimal given my abilities.   I have been thinking about what my original material would sound like if I had any, given the songs I can belt out like a pro (I was literally walking around outside on lunchbreak singing solo).  I\'d assume the vocal arrangement is probably the last piece of the songwriting process for the band.

Practice sessions should gauge whether or not they sound up to par for Lawnboy vocals and the final product should come as no surprise.

As far as lessons go, these guys have taught themselves so much that they can probably take the vocals to another level of proficiency on their own.   Maybe a professional can analyze their abilities and help guide the lyrical arrangement process, but they seem sufficient if left to their own constructs.

Come on Seth just because they could hit notes correctly doesn\'t mean they have nice voices. Also... for some reason Trey was often singing notes that were clearly out of his vocal range, leaving me just waiting for his voice to crack. He often sounded so strained it was ridiculous.

all good points though so far.

I winced a few times in 03 and 04 but I will always be a huge fan of his singing though regardless.  No need to really break it down the further than that. It\'s trey. It trey\'s voice.  I grew up on it.

wow, good read last couple of pages. im definitely on the "vocals need improvement team". i especially agree with bdfreetuna\'s comments (whats your name man?).

and trey and the boys by no means had great voices, but they definitely maximized their potential and sounded wonderful. in the studio their melodies were incredible and live-90\'s they achieved shit they werent born to. not always, but at times. i agree though that the last however many years, ill say since \'99, trey struggled and got lazy with his voice and it sounded real shitty often.

It doesn\'t mean that they don\'t either.  It means that they hit their hard parts, which is one particular positive aspect of vocals.  But if you want nice voices on display, they have that too, particularly from 93-00.  You never felt anything during Waste?  Billy Breathes?  Strange Design?  Dirt?  Loving Cup?  While My Guitar Gently Weeps?  Brian and Robert?  Circus?  Sleep?  Roggae?  Velvet Sea?  Limb By Limb?  Swept Away?  Horn?  You really think they sound "atrocious" in these songs?  Trey and Page\'s nice voices sold these songs for years.

That comment was unfair to The Breakfast.  If you want to say Phish is that good that\'s fine, but The Breakfast are not that bad.  I already went over this earlier and it\'s getting boring, but the bottom line on Breakfast vocals are

1. Always at least servicable
2. At times very good
3. Ginormously improved since the early days
4. Still getting things together with Matt...check back in 6 months
5. Not as good at singing Phish songs as Phish.

Here\'s my $0.02

Tim almost never has pitch problems...if he hasn\'t been partying it up for a while, his voice is strong, clear, and has a nice range.  I also enjoy his versatility, but I would like to hear some tenderness when they play a ballad.  I feel that songs like Good Things and LATG could be miraculous if performed with a finesse that Tim hasn\'t tapped into (at least, not in the shows I\'ve attended).

Ron has very much improved on the harmony lines, and his tenor is a nice change from Timmy\'s baritone.  Their voices blend quite well together despite having different textures.

I\'m really glad Adrian has been singing more over the past year.  When I first heard Beef Barley as a trio, I almost ate my beer glass instead of staying through the end.  However, things have gotten much better and Adrian\'s ear has greatly improved.  On this particular show, Adrian just got off a bit sometimes, and it set him on a course for flatness.

Matt: he should really know better.  I\'m shocked that someone as adept at keyboards as he and coming from a music school atmosphere is not able to hear the harmony lines he\'s supposed to be singing.  Is his pitch perception that off, or are the monitors not turned up enough that he can hear the other singers?   I will think more on this.

*blink blink*
Thank you.

There\'s also a heavy reverb or something on it which I think should be used more.
Yeah he\'s really going after it in this version. I like it.

Iron Horse 10/26/07 TL&TG, Tim\'s voice was as good or better than i\'ve ever heard.

I stand corrected...I was wearing my jester hat and the bells must have been ringing in my ears that night. ;-)

PS, Todd: sweet pic :)

the more i listen to this show (ive listened to it probably 20 times haha), the more i like matts coil solo...at first i didnt that much and i was harsh in rating it, but its grown on me a lot.

also, i cant stop listening to the oh kee paa ceremony...tims guitar work on it is unbelievable...he literally doesnt miss one note, and thats HARD to do on this song.  my guitar player in my band used to say this song was the hardest phish song to play perfectly on guitar.  (he was half-kidding, but still)

one more thing...in my sweet one, who sings the line "You know You can count on me to take good care of You," cause its PERFECT, sounds just like gordo.  i think its either adrian or ron (cause i think matt sings the 1st line and tim sings the 3rd in that sequence).

Oh man the Coil outro solo.... I loved it so much @ the show. I really think Matt payed awesome tribute to Page esp considering he only heard Phish a few weeks ago!

Nailed it.

The fact that Breakfast\'s Lawn Boy sounds so damn good (except for a few tricky vocal spots) on the recording is a testament to how fucking awesome it was live.

I have to agree about the coil solo. Didn\'t like it the first time very much but it has grown on me since. nicely done.

As for timmy he rips it up on every song. He really shined on this night and watching the vids you can tell he had an absolute blast doing it.

Great singers are born, not made.  No one in Phish was a great singer.

Trey\'s voice angel-like?  I\'ve never heard an angel, but if they sound nasally and whiney then maybe he does...

Also, I brought it up before, but I would really love a poster from the show if any are left. I totally dropped the ball on that and am regretting it big time. Help!

All 30 were sold when I left, though the artist (Jon Warner) might have a few more... it\'d be worth checking out... it might be up on one of the following sites:

J-Dub AllStars (http://www.jduballstars.com/Store/posters/postersHome.html)
Evan\'s Ink  (http://www.evansink.net)
Jon\'s Myspace Page (http://www.myspace.com/evans_ink)
GigPosters.com (http://www.gigposters.com/designer/15876_John_Warner.html)

edit:  just found it here:  GigPosters.com (http://www.gigposters.com/designer/15876_John_Warner.html)

Thank you thank you. I just ordered one from John himself. He\'s stoked that they\'re a seller.

So I just got my poster in the mail (which is still as cool as it was a week ago) and john warner (the artist) threw in two goodies-- a Topaz poster from 10.29.05 with Count Dracula under his covers scared, awesome poster; and an old school Psychedelic Breakfast NYE Toad\'s Place poster with a martian woman smoking a cigarette, INCREDIBLE poster. It has no date, when is it from? anyone?

I\'m now very happy I didn\'t buy one at the show. Biscuit in the basket my friends.

Tell the PT people to listen to Dave\'s recording.  Sounds much better than what is found on Youtube.
