Title: Setlist: 2007-07-27 - Camp Barefoot; Gore, VA
Post by: Me! on July 30, 2007, 03:20:44 am
psuedo setlist: (I can\'t promise total  accuracy) (last 3 piece show)

Jam> Inner Glimpse, Psygn, Tricky Ways, Great Big Fiery Ball in the Sky> Overexposure, Spunk> Question> Spunk, Tunage

great fuckin show, Overexposure was a MONSTER! JKing came up to me afterwords and said "when did they get that good?"  Question brought me tears.  The crowd really ate everything up, and prob had the best crowd of the weekend.  Also Tim sat in with Garaj Mahal and things just got silly.  More later....

sorry i had to bail saturday. my crohn\'s has been acting up all week and i wasn\'t sure i was gonna be able to make it at all. saturday morning it told me i had had enough. it was great meeting lex and sallieallie and of course great seeing todd, robyn and meester mandler once again!

ok, the opening jam was nice, inner glimpse was rockin\', but a whole new world opened up with psygn. dark, dissonant, and HUGE! someone behind me muttered, \'damn, that won\'t like anyone else so far!!!\' and dude was only barely scratching the sheer badassery that was displayed!! fewer notes than dischordant sound washes set up a deep, mean jam. soooo good!

tricky ways was real nice, but i decided that for that song (which i like) to *really* go over the top, its up to ron. he did some turn-around right at the beginning which i wish he could have kept up. its played as a straight up blue bassline, simple and out of the way. but i think if he funks it up a but it\'ll just take off with a new life all it own. that being said, great version that was almost like a palate cleanser after that dirty, dirty osygn. the crowd was fully into the band by the end.

gbfbits stated off like they all do, but it ended and all i could think was that the jam would fit brilliantly at, say, camp bisco. and while i don\'t usually care for electronica-ish jams, this one really grabbed me! probably because, unlike so many of the bands playing in this style, they don\'t just get a repetitive riff going and exhaust it. the kept the pulsing and throbbing rhthym  without being redundant. huge, out-there jam that slyly ended up rolling into the opening of overexposure.

like, me! said, i was simply STUNNED by how good overexposure was!!! truly a whole new level of three piece insanity. frankly, by the end of OE, i was finally totally comforable with the thought of them as a tri for ever. i felt like they had completely figured out how to be huge and hole-less in their playing, just the three of them. afterwards ron said something to the effect of (after telling him my above thoughts) it being the last trio show, they played it as such! i really wish i had better words for OE, though. i said someting to gencs about the fact that he\'s about to get a lot busier if they keep playing like that! a LOT busier! (eat it naysayers!)

at some point in there, timmy announced that it was the last three piece show, said thanks to them and then hugged his keyboards. todd\'s got a great pic of it, too!

spunk>question>spunk was killer, too! it was funny seeing all these people recognizing the question, knowing a line of lyrics, even, but having no idea whatsoever what the hell song it actually was! i actually forgot that spunk was coming back around, so when it did, i whoo hoo\'ed so hard i blew out my vocal cords. still raspy today, even.

and then the \'rare\' un-interrupted tunage which was, can you guess? awesomely badass. you could hear the cheers coming out of the treeline, not to mention that the entire dancing area was full of folks, all of whom were really into it! i would say that the boys definitely converted a few folks that night! it was easily the best trio show i\'ve seen, and frankly, it\'d put the energy, new approaches and ferocity up there with the best shows ever. not saying that this show was necessarily the best ever, but it certainly had best ever elements!

oh yeah, then there was tim\'s sit in!
first off, watching the whole band stare raptly at garaj was great. they\'re so tight and talented and the breakfast boys were devouring it. but then it was time for tim to join in. oh dear god. he started off gently, seeingwhat he could play and what would be too much. well, with those musicians, nothing was too much and soon enough he was all over the fretboard, bouncing back and forth with Fareed Haque which ended in a guitar duet, trading licks back and forth, just the two of them. the rest of the band finally came back in and the tempo picked up (hell, timmy actually double timed the tempo and got the band going). then he turned around to the keys  player who literally didn\'t even bother to try to keep up with him. it was great. and being up on the rail, watching those two guys\' fingers going.... amazing!!!

we gotta keep an eye out for these recordings. they are definitely gonna be worth finding!!

I: jam > Inner Glimpse, Psygn, Tricky Ways, Great Big Fiery Ball In The Sky > Over Exposure, Spunk > Question > Spunk, Tunage

An announcement was made that this would be the band\'s final show as a three-piece.

This is probably a stupid question, but if this was a the last Trio show and the artwork for the Toad\'s show the just went out states that it\'s the first show with Matt, is the Camp Bisco show happening?  Maybe I\'m confusing myself.

Creative marketing my friend. plus this will be the first 2 set, non-festival show with Matt. thus my reasoning. plus the majority of people won\'t be at GOTV or Camp Bisco. Gotta build the hype. a good turn out will reflect well on the band and better the chance of getting this years FFO there. so i urge you guys to help make this one a solid one.

well, its pretty much all been said at this point.  the tpalms garaj mahal sit-in was pretty much too sick to describe. it was... well, it was kinda like... yea, way too sick.fiery ball jam hinted at the future of rock and roll, overexposure hinted at the future of the world (a fiery amageddon of serness).  the question to end all questions, and a spunk that left me feeling, well a little bit moist.
jking, it was great meeting you and your freebird story remains the best ever.  i\'m pretty sure the barefoot boys told the bfast that they are def playing 2 nights next year, so get ready

Paul -
It looks like that guy Matt that sat in with them during two shows will take over the keys.  That\'s what the rumor mill is spouting and by the looks of the Toads artwork, it\'s a done deal.

I must say that I worked my ass off this week....Everything was hurting but when the breakfast came on all that pain went away.   And when Garaj Mahal started playing I was star struck....Once Tim came on and played a song the crowd ate it up and then fareed and tim were talking back in the corner and fareed looked at Kai and Kai gave a smile and a nod.  Next thing you know tim walked back out there played some funk and some blues riffs and freaking melted my face off.

After that whole deal the place was on fire.  Barefoot manner came out and ended the night with an explosive set!  The crowd ate up that lineup breakfast, garaj, barefoot.

I def. want the breakfast for two nights!!! and two sets!!!

honestly, not for nuthin but you really didn\'t miss much.  The Itals and Modern Groove on sat were were good, RAQ though was roughly a 1/2 hour late then took a half hour sound check, creating the only dead air I heard up to that point in the weekend.  They played roughly 45 min, then it started pouring.  Barefoot Manor didn\'t come on nor did Brother\'s Past for late night.  So we ended up being stuck between our canopy and being in the truck, and no tunes.  Brother\'s Past was really who I wanted to see on Sat, so I was ser bummed that they never played.  But hey what are you gonna do? Was a little frustrated by the course of events on sat, but was happy with the weekend on the whole.

So, IMHO you saw what were easily the two best sets of the weekend, The Breakfast and Garaj Mahal.

BTW: if anyone thinks of it go to DJ Williams (he\'s not a "Disc Jockey" his name\'s DJ) site on myspace or whatever and tell these guys to come up north, they are awesome and anyone who has the opportunity def check them out, you\'ll be glad you did.  If anyone remembers they opened for the guys at Coda in NYC I think.  I highly recommend!

I was extremely upset about the end to the festival... RAQ was more like 1.5 hours late before they started to play for their 2 hour set.  I understand that there are factors like traffic & other situations beyond the band\'s control, but honestly, to sound check for a half hour when they\'re already late was like a slap in the face to the fans.  I mean, the Breakfast ran so late that they only had 15 minutes to load in & begin playing -- they started on time, and sounded INCREDIBLE with only a 30 second sound check!  Also, when RAQ finally started playing, the sound guy forgot to shut off the house music, so they had about 10 minutes of interfering noise before someone realized & shut it off.  Not cool.

I was also excited to see Brothers Past for latenight, though the rain canceled that as well :(  Ah, well, hopefully I\'ll get a chance to see them before the summer is over

Besides these two incidents, the entire festival was run so smoothly, and I\'ll definitely go back next year to see the Breakfast play two sets & two nights :D  Buy your VIP tickets as soon as you can, I only see this festival getting more and more popular every year!:awwyeah:

RAQ Generator on their bus broke down and they had to get it repaired that is what they told us backstage.  We busted our ass to load their gear on.  After that it was out of my hands.  I was a stage hand all weekend.

Also it was the lighting and thunder that kept the music from coming back on.  We had gotten the stage dry and started to get the sound going and bam another lighting storm.  We couldn\'t win that night.  I was ready to blow off some steam and party down on saturday.   I am sorry for the storms saturday night but what can you do.  Thursday night and Friday night were awesome nights of music.  Wed. we had a special set of music just for Scotts B-day by the Burnin Smyrnans.  We ordered like 20 pizzas and partied all night hooking up a big blow up projector screen and played Wii until the wee hours of the morning.

Great pictures of the Breakfast on page 4 -- At the time, it looked like London Fog (circa Toad\'s Place) however, the pics look awesome!  :lol:I really wanted one of those blue "Welcome to Camp Barefoot" signs (pg. 3) to match the one I got from last year, but we left too late on Sunday evening to snag one :(  On page 5, notice the breakfast logo in the bottom right corner of the "community art painting" - courtesy of Lexi & Alli :yay:

Oh, and SKU - Giggles had some terrific Peach Moonshine going all weekend long... if you see her, please tell her thanks! :awwyeah:

The sets were def. taped audio. I think the guy shooting video was "done" by the time The Breakfast were on. The only chance of a video shot may be one camera from the soundboard, but I don\'t think so.

And I have in my possession a bunch of shirts that weren\'t sold at the festival. Def. one of the best designs yet.

freespirit I will let giggles now about the peach....We had our buddy bring about 5 gallons up from NC for the weekend.  That stuff is the best.

I am lucky my wife was in charge of the merch all weekend or I would have missed out on those shirts.  She took care of me and surprised me with one when we got back home.  Once I hear about audio I will let everyone know.

Those photographs of the breakfast are great.  Rich did a great job.  How he captured the color of the light and how clear they are.  I am glad he was there b/c I didn\'t get one picture all weekend.

Hahaha! She almost didn\'t get you one. I picked up the merch on Sunday and was about to leave when she remembered she wanted to get you one.

And yes, the peach "moonshine" was awesome!!!

:D and :(

from ts.com:
Quote
The Breakfast got on stage at like 9pm and fucking tore it up. they put on an awseome show, really heavy, psychedelic, rock. the lights and fog machine were on and the stage really looked good. good crowd by this time, and it seemed like everyone was really into this show. the guitarist is great, hes very talented and interacted with the crowd. the dummer is sick to, he was laying down some serious beats non stop for an hour. only good things to say about the bassist too. apparently they are about to add a keys player to their line up. the first show with him will be at Camp Bisco in the middle of august.

next was Garaj Mahal. let me say that this was, no exaggeration, one of the best concerts i have ever seen. these guys are really good musicians who know each other very well. they really know how to get into a groove. it was a really cool, mellow set. the guitarist from the Breakfast came out towards the end and kinda wanted to steal the show from these guys but it didnt appear as if they wanted to give him the stage. haha their types of music are so different and, even though it sounded tight, you could tell GM was glad to get him off the stage haha. really great set though. it was a solid 2 hours and 15 minutes, no break.

imo, fareed had a blast jamming with tim on stage, and I don\'t know what this guy was on... as far as his review of the Breakfast, though, right on!

Tim def. wasn\'t looking to steal the show. He was about to get off stage when Fareed asked him to come back for more. The keys player did seem intimidated when Tim tried to bounce some stuff off of him though.

well regardless, it\'s pretty well-known (amongst musicians, anyways) that when someone is asked to sit in, THEY get the spotlight. it\'s a respect thing. just go back and listen/watch to see how tim played when fuzz sat in at that danbury show..
