I don\'t see how you can even really compare the two, two completely different entities

Ouch! soooooory charlie.

the music of the dead has touched me more and in more ways than even my uncle jimmy. but, that joke was brought to you by mental damage inflicted by zappa\'s tunes. as far as musical composition and musicianship as well as the tightness and shenanigans of live performances, its all zappa.
as far as just good ol\' fashioned jamming improvisation and jerry garcia being my favorite guitarist, it gota be the dead. plus, jerry never made fun of me for liking his music and smoking herb.
phish wins!

[BANANA]^
yeah that[/BANANA]

If only there was a current band that played occasional Zappa and Dead covers along with lots of their own dank original material that\'d be pretty chill...
I vote Smashing Pumpkins

Zappa is cool and all but GD created a community that has evolved into the scene we enjoy today.

if it weren\'t for the Grateful Dead i prolly would not have met all the phine folks i have. I felt like a butterfly stepping out of a cocoon....... ok that was kind of gay, how about a cicada. hey hibernate for years and emerge to make a shit load of noise. i don\'t know, basically they changed my life for the better and if i were stuck on a deserted island with one cd it would be without a net
-
can i change my answer?

As much as I respect Frank Zappa as an artist and prolific recording artist The Grateful Dead changed my life forever.
Musically, Spiritually, and consciously they set me on a life\'s journey that continues to this day. It has made me a better person for it IMHO
-
:hscratch: wait, who?
edit: wait, who cares?

How bout adding votes to the exsisting band on this thread... and I will waste my time tallying them up!
-
zappa\'s music was so complex he got bored of it, GD went with their flows.
paranoid or livin in the now?
-
My vote goes for Zappa.
Why? Cause when Jerry was shootin\' up Frank was writing a new tune. Hands down one of the hardest working musicians of the last 100 years.
"As much as I respect Frank Zappa as an artist and prolific recording artist The Grateful Dead changed my life forever.

I feel the same way about Zappa, he seriously did change my life forever on more than one occasion.

If not for Jer and the music of the Dead, I would still be searching for a lot more. That band has led me to some amazing people and journeys.......Thanks to Tim and Adrian I have been exposed to so much amazing music by Frank Zappa.......I love them both but if I had to pick one, I would undoubtedly choose the music of the Grateful Dead.
Now did Zappa ever play with the Dead or Jer ever play with Frank Zappa?
-
As for the Dead and Zappa playing together, this was the closest I ever got to see. Once saw the JGB open up for Zappa at the U.I.C. Pavillion in Chicago (8/18/84). I remember JGB was so loud my ears rang for days and Zappa\'s encore, a little ditty called "Ride My Face to Chicago". But, alas, they did not play together.
-
Thanks for the heads up Mr. Roux.........
Must have been a ser show.....
Ride My Face To Chicago.....definitely listened to that from You Cant Do That On Stage Anymore Vol.3 Disc 1.........Tim picked up a lot of Zappa on tour in Oct......I was definitely exposed to more Zappa than ever....it was quite amazing.....
-
Now did Zappa ever play with the Dead or Jer ever play with Frank Zappa?
I don\'t think so... although they have both played at some of the same festies (like Dec 1968\'s Gulf Stream Race Park). One more random fact: The Persuasions have had tribute albums for both GD & Zappa.
