Rage Against the Machine will reunite for Coachella
Red Hot Chili Peppers and Björk also top the bill for the three-day music festival.
Rage Against the Machine, the seminal L.A. band that made heavy music into political manifesto, will reunite after a seven-year lull for one show as the headliners at the 2007 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival.
Sources say Rage, which played the main stage at the first Coachella in 1999, will be joined by other familiar faces for the eighth edition of the festival, which covers three days this year and begins April 27: Red Hot Chili Peppers, which headlined in 2003, are back, as is Björk, who topped the bill in 2002.
Organizers were mum this weekend and it was not clear which day Rage or the other acts were slotted to play; that announcement is expected in the next few days. Other acts expected in the eclectic lineup: Arcade Fire, Interpol, Willie Nelson, the Roots, Manu Chao, the Decemberists, Arctic Monkeys, Sonic Youth, Crowded House, Air, Tiësto and Kings of Leon.
Tickets go on sale Saturday, via Ticketmaster. Three-day passes will cost about $250 and there will be a limited number of single-day passes available.
The headliners are not novel, but they are potent. The Peppers are up for their first best album Grammy right now, and Björk remains a mesmerizing figure to fans of avant pop. But in Southern California rock circles, there is very little that could compete with the excitement of a Rage Against the Machine reunion. The quartet\'s hybrid of funk, rap, metal and leftist ideology was as subtle as a Molotov cocktail; in the 1990s, its aggro-anthems made it the only band that mattered to a fan base that included East L.A. protest kids as well as those in Hollywood punk circles, college dorms and mainstream rock festival mosh pits, where politics were secondary to the group\'s feral energy.
The band is vocalist Zack de la Rocha, guitarist Tom Morello, bassist Tim Commerford and drummer Brad Wilk. Their split came amid rumors of bad blood between De la Rocha and his mates, who went on to work with Chris Cornell in Audioslave. However, Morello and De la Rocha appeared together at a 2005 rally for the urban farmers of a South Los Angeles community garden.

zach must need new rims for his mercedes suv...:sigh:
in all seriousness though, these guys wrote and performed some of the most powerful music I\'ve ever heard...

That makes me want to go. I have always been annoyed with myself for not going to see them.
Not to mention
RHCP

Sonic Youth

I\'m really happy to hear this, and while I honestly doubt I\'ll get to this show, (although it\'s got some great names on the bill) it\' sgood to hear anyway, and hopefully it may mean more collaborations in the future.
on a sidenote, IMHO their first album is a flat out classic, easily one that I can start and not skip a single track on the album, something I can always return to and it\'s still as good as the first time I heard it. Their next album was good but not quite as good as the first, the third not as good second ect........ none the less, great band.

god i hope this turns into more than a one-off show

anyone on here lucky enough to see the Rage/wuTang cobill from back in the day??? my only time seeing them was when they toured with Gang Starr and At The Drive In.. one of the sickest musical experiences i\'ve ever had...

i skipped my would-be first phish show (the great went) to see rage/wu at the meadows. 2nd row seats, outside of the pit. one of the most insane concerts i\'ve ever been to (what with the fence being burned down and all), and to this day, i don\'t regret missing the went for it.
also saw rage at the new haven coliseum on the Battle Of LA tour. first section from the stage on the side, 5 rows up. the most i\'ve ever sweat at a concert. i looked like stevie walking out of a mid-june porter\'s show by the time it was over. :)
-
i saw them with the Beastie\'s at Continental. easily one of the best nights of music i have seen.(somehow, the beastie\'s are involved in a bunch of my \'best ever\' concerts)

Deblock myself and my friend Ben from high school were first row but way back in one of the corners of the venue away from the stage. Perfect view right over the floor. One of the best shows I\'ve ever seen. I wanted to go to the wu/rage show but couldn\'t get off of work. Remeber the bass setup the openeing act had? It was just the entire stage! Like the deads wall of sound but all for bass. :P
That show sounds great. Would love to see them again. I will say this though if they come back: I am severly dissapointed in you rage. YOu had the oportunity to make some of the best political statments you ever could have if you had simply kept going given bush in office, but you played it safe and broke up. Now that he is leaving office in a little bit you come back? For shame. Unless you get out and become extremely political over the elections in 08, you will never be the band you once were.
You ain\'t gonna get to me like you did my man fred hampton. :banrock:

I think the actual breaking up was respectable and almost makes lends more clout to what they had to say.
Getting back together seems a little weak. But I still want to see them. :)
I have heard several people say that Wu-Tang put on a terrible show. Too many people on stage, bunch of disorganized sound, them... drunk by the end of the show... Nothing good to listen to at all.

Well Coachella is known for this type of thing. \'06 had Tool\'s first perfromance in 4 years, \'05 had Bauhaus and Gang of Four, \'04 was the Pixies \'03, Iggy Pop w/The Stooges

Thanks for the headsup. Though I\'ll probably forget...
Leith... hmm. I wasn\'t aware. Interesting.
For such a big deal, you would think their website would be updated. Maybe I have the wrong address. I went to coachella.com and they only had the information for last year\'s fest.

I realize that the headline rock acts at Coachella are the biggest ticket sellers. However, what jumps out at me more are the DJ and hiphop names on the list. DJ Shadow + Tiesto + Paul Oakenfold + Paul Van Dyk = the absolute A-list of club DJs, and El-P + Ozomatli + The Roots + Ghostface + Pharoahe Monch + Lupe Fiasco + The Coup = a very, very strong underground hiphop element. If I go I\'ll personally get more satisfaction out of easily sliding into the first 20 rows with good music fans to see these great acts than I will battling 75,000 drunk-off-their-ass kids to see Rage. That\'s nothing against Rage, they rule(d), but you know it\'s gonna be an all-out shit show when they play. More power to ya if that\'s your thing! What also makes me feel weird is that the full schedule with time slots that was up on Saturday gave 45 minutes to every act, except the 3 headliners who had 1:15. There were a couple of key conflicts as well. I\'d rather see half the bands get twice the time. 45 minutes isn\'t enough to get anything too ser going. It starts, they play 6 songs, you blink, and it\'s over, and you\'re left standing there thinking WTF! These new mega-festivals always oooh and aaah you on paper but the reality of being at them is always risky. If this were within an 8 hour drive I\'d go but I doubt cross-country is gonna happen for me. I guess I\'m just into small fests and full individual shows more than mega-fests right now.

I totally agree!!! Every time I see a very good band get shafted with a 30-45 minute set I get so disappointed. To me it\'s more about quality rather than quantity. I\'ve seen it happen to PB more times than I\'d like to think about. It just leaves me a bit sour.

:that: As much as I would totally love to be there...I won\'t. Def. all about the smaller festies and full on shows at this point in my life!

i think you\'re reading waaaaaaaaaay too much into it (http://www.theonion.com/content/node/33992).

go ahead and laugh, I agree with a lot of what he said. I\'m not going to blindly follow zack or anyone else, but given the stance he had set up I feel that he walked away at a point when he could have catapulted himself to a much higher epoch. Instead, he walked away and now comes back after bush is leaving office?
It\'s easy to protest when no one is really going to oppose you. It\'s a lot harder to do it when you know people are going to come down on you hard for your views. I just lost a lot of respect for him and the timing of this made me loose more. That\'s all I\'m saying.

You lost respect for Zach for leaving Rage? Why exactly?
He kept up his work just not in a musical/lyrical fashion in a band.
Just because he decides to play from all reports a one-off show @ a fest known for one-offs and reunions you lose more respect for him?
Why does he have to bear the brunt of a nation\'s folly and be the voice of protest, when the WHOLE POINT OF RATM FROM THE BEGINNING WAS TO INSTIGATE US TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT OUR NATION AND WORLD AROUND US, FOR US TO TAKE UP THE CALL AND TAKE ACTION! He was not just writing lyrics he was writing a directive for peace through protest and taking control of OUR nation. He was trying to inform us all about the atrocities right in front of us and just because he decided he had done enough for the time being you lose respect for him. Seems kind of selfish to me.

I told you why. It\'s very simple. They gave us a rather refreshing social commentary that I had not seen on that level since the late 60s. They were pushing people to become aware of the issues and become active in changing things they did not approve of. If the people took up the cause or not is the will of the people. Is there anything wrong with him breaking up the band to persue other intrests? Absolutely not. My problem is the timming. I think that based on the agenda they seemed to have set, that they could have become a much larger and important band given the war breaking out. But they broke up instead. I\'m not saying that they suck because of it, I still love the music they released and I was glad I got to see them live before the breakup. To me though, he walked away at the moment when he could have had the most to say. I\'m not looking for a leader here, nor do I think they should need to be. I would have really loved to have know his views on what has happened the last few years were though.

so look it up. like leith said, zach didn\'t disappear off the face of the earth after RATM broke up, which happened almost an entire year before the "war on terror" began.
De la Rocha and DJ Shadow\'s song "March of Death (http://www.zackdelarocha.com/)" was released for free over the web in 2003 in protest of the war in Iraq.
Zack released a statement along with his song:
Without just cause or reason, without legal or moral justification, and without a thread of proof that Iraq directly threatens the security of the United States, the Bush administration has headed to war. As I am writing this, bombs are raining upon the defenseless civilians of Baghdad in a continuation of a policy that has already claimed the lives of over 1 million innocent Iraqi people. People just like us who want democracy but find themselves cornered by a dictator on one side, naked U.S. aggression on another, and the oil beneath their country; for which it appears they are to be massacred.
Lies, sanctions, and cruise missiles have never created a free and just society. Only everyday people can do that, which is why I\'m joining the millions world wide who have stood up to oppose the Bush administration\'s attempt to expand the U.S. empire at the expense of human rights at home and abroad. In this spirit I\'m releasing this song for anyone who is willing to listen. I hope it not only makes us think, but also inspires us to act and raise our voices.
Zack is also actively working with the Son Jarocho group Son De Madera and has performed with them on a number of occasions including the \'Save The Farm\' rally for the South Central Farmers plot in Los Angeles, California. Among the songs de la Rocha performed was one critical of the government\'s response to the Hurricane Katrina disaster.
-
well there you go then. I remembered him working on some new music but never heard of an album (or anything else) being released for that matter. I\'ll check it out after work. Thanks Dave.

any word on the solo hip hop record zach had been in the works on forever?? there was a track released on rawkus\' lyricist lounge vol. 1 way back when... it was with krs-0ne.. something about the cia... good shit none the less...

anyone else catch their tour with wu-tang in the late 90s? that was a great time. might have to hit up the nyc show if the tix arent recidulious.
-
I would definitely get tickets for NYC.
Well, after reading that article, maybe I won\'t.
To say that you want to rally young people against the facist Party (not just individual members or portions of it) is pretty obnoxious and ridiculous.
NOT turning this thread political.
SORRY DAVE
Just wanted to make that one comment.

RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE & THE WU-TANG CLAN SET TO "ROCK THE BELLS"
Rage Against the Machine
First it was the reunion of the Wu-Tang Clan in 2004. Then it was A Tribe Called Quest later that year. Now, ROCK THE BELLS will make history again as Rage Against The Machine announces their plans to perform three exclusive engagements with the critically acclaimed world-class hip-hop festival this summer. The epic line-up will see Rage Against The Machine join Wu-Tang Clan for two dates on the west coast (August 11 - NOS Event Center, San Bernardino, CA, August 18 - venue TBA, San Francisco) and for Rock The Bells\' inaugural venture into New York City (July 28 - Randall\'s Island) for their only scheduled appearance on the eastern seaboard this year. The Wu-Tang Clan will support the release of their forthcoming album 8 Diagrams.
Rock The Bells, presented by Guerilla Union since 2003, has established itself as a world-class hip-hop platform by hosting legendary performances by NAS, A Tribe Called Quest, Lauryn Hill, Blackstarr (Talib Kweli and Mos Def), Cuban Linx, De La Soul, Busta Rhymes, Cypress Hill and Jurassic 5 as well as reuniting Wu-Tang for their last performance with ODB in 2004. This year, the festival will keep in its tradition and showcase the very best the genre has to offer.
"It\'s definitely our fans\' dream billing. It\'s a tremendous honor to have Rage Against The Machine and Wu-Tang Clan perform together," states event organizer Chang Weisberg of Guerilla Union. "I can\'t wait to announce the rest of the line-up for Rock the Bells. It\'s incredibly important to put some shine on quality hip-hop. The opportunity to galvanize the social and political consciousness of these groups is undeniable."
The complete line-up will be announced March 26 and tickets will go on-sale March 31 at 10:00 a.m.

"Rock The Bells"
L.L. Cool J. is hard as hell
Battle anybody I don\'t care who you tell
I excel, they all fail
I\'m gonna crack shells, Double-L must rock the bells
You\'ve been waitin\' and debatin\' for oh so long
Just starvin\' like Marvin for a Cool J. song
If you cried and thought I died, you definitely was wrong
It took a thought, plus I brought Cut Creator along
Evened up with E-Love down with the Cool J. force
Symbolizin\' in the rhymin\' for the record of course
I\'m a tower full of power with rain and hail
Cut Creator scratch the record with his fingernail
Rock the bells
The king of crowd rockers finally is back
My voice is your choice as the hottest wax
True as a wizard, just a blizzard, I ain\'t taken no crap
I\'m rhymin\' and designin\' with your girl in my lap
The bass is kickin\' always stickin\' cause you like it that way
You take a step because it\'s def and plus it\'s by Cool J.
Cut Creator on the fader, my right-hand man
We rock the bells so very well cause that\'s the name of this jam
Rock the bells
Some girl\'s will like this jam and some girls won\'t
Cause I make a lot of money and your boyfriend don\'t
L.L. went to hell, gonna rock the bells
All you washed up rappers wanna do this well
Rock the bells
Now I\'m world-wide known, whether you like it or not
My one man band is Cut Creator a.k.a. Philpot
He\'ll never skip it, only rip it when he\'s on the fader
What\'s my d.j.\'s name, Cut Creator
Now you know the episode who\'s on the wheels
He\'ll drive the cross fader like a cut mobile
So precise with a slice that you know he\'s greater
What\'s my d.j.\'s name, Cut Creator
Now you know, what do you know, Earl roles the ****
I go to the store and get Old Gold
So all you crabby lookin\' nappy headed girls get back
Cause there\'s a ten to one chance that you might get smacked
Rock the bells
The bells are circulatin\' the blood in your veins
Why are girlies on the tip, L.L.\'s your name
Cut Creator\'s good, Cool J. is good-good
You bring the wood pecker, I\'ll bring the wood
The bells are wippin\' and rippin\' at your body and soul
Why do you like Cool J., we like rock and roll
Cause it ain\'t the glory days with Bruce Springsteen
I\'m not a virgin so I know I\'ll make Madonna scream
You hated Michael and Prince all the way, ever sense
If their beats were made of meat, then they would have to be mince
Rock the bells
So listen to the lines of rhyme, I rhyme on time
He\'ll cut the record in a second, make your d.j. look blind
So all you jerry-curl suckers wearin\' high-heel boots
Like ballerinas, what I mean is you\'re a fruit-loop troop
All you gonna-be(s), wanna-be(s), when will you learn
Wanna be like Cool J., you gotta wait your turn
Some suckers don\'t like me, but I\'m not concerned
Six-g (s) for twenty minutes is the pay I earn
I\'m growin\' and glowin\' like a forest blaze
Do you like Michael Jackson, we like Cool J.
That\'s right, I\'m on the mic with the help of the bells
There\'s no delayin\' what I\'m sayin\' as I\'m rockin\' you well
Rock the bells
-
Always liked that song.
