Title: Saying "Best Show Ever"
Post by: Wolfman on September 10, 2006, 12:14:03 pm
A couple of people started a debate over these 3 little words in the 9/8/6 show review thread, but I have an extended take so I thought I\'d stoke up a new thread...

My take on saying "best show ever": I don\'t mind people saying it because what they mean is that was their personal best show ever.  I like hearing that.  With over 1000 shows played obviously nobody can assert that some show was the best show ever for the band.  But that\'s not what anybody\'s saying.  They\'re just saying it was the best show that they personally have ever seen.

The "They-Just-Keep-Getting-Better-Every-Night" phenomenon is very common amongst Breakfast fans between shows 10 and 50.  I talk to people going through it all the time.  I personally went through a second phase of this around shows 160-200 starting at the beginning of \'04 with the emergences of D5/Doughboy/Inner Glimpse/No Regret and continuing all the way through \'05 with Good Things/Psygn/Fresh Cut/Eppy III.  When you\'re in that zone where every show somehow tops the last one then you\'re bound to say "best show ever" a lot.  It\'s a personal thing and I like hearing people say it.

Up through \'01 there were some people who had seen 50-90% of all Breakfast shows and 100% of all non-doozie Breakfast shows.  During this time it was possible to have a best-show-ever with nearly universal concensus.  I think that 10/30/99 (Fonghoulish Freakout I at Puppet House), 11/19/99 (First huge Butterfield show), 8/12/00 (The six hour Woodstock set), 5/5/01 (Baker Quad, last show on UMass campus), and 8/27/01 (Camp Creek) are the only shows that for a time could claim the title of "Best Show Ever."  After \'01 when national tours started and northeast shows got more spread out there was just no way to track this anymore.

For my personal best show ever, I\'m gonna take a page out of Tom Brady\'s book.  He\'s won 3 NFL championships, but when asked which championship was his favorite he replied, "The next one."  So for me the best Breakfast show is always my next one.  :)  But when The Breakfast plays a show that trumps anything you\'ve ever seen before and you\'re experiencing that super post-show afterglow when you hit the keyboard, by all means bust out a "Best Show Ever".  I\'ll be happy to read it.

i didn\'t expect this thread to praise the phrase "best show ever" but i\'m glad it did because at about 55 shows i still fid myself saying this after almost every show, eventhough i\'m not always 100 percent sinser. there are a few shows which i can say were definitely my faves, but in the excitement of any ser set i wil be sure to say "best show ever!!!" thanks for your support, Seth.

coda= not best show ever

The "best show ever", is a blanket statement and does not make any reference to personal experience.  It basically states unsubstantiated claims about a show to others as an understood truth.

Now, saying that it was "The best show you ever saw" or that it was "my favorite", is a different story.

When people get excited, they tend to hyperbolize. It\'s human nature. Whenever you hear "best _____ ever" take it with a grain of salt.
To me- best show ever= I give my highest recommendation.

I mean, there is no real way to qualify or quantify want is best.
Some of us are very tech oriented.  The playing has to be flawless, the segues must be smooth and the sound must be top notch.
For others it\'s more of an emotional thing.  Did their favs get played?  Did any lyrics speak to recent personal experience, and how was the crowd vibe?

Personally, if I\'m relatively sober- tech geek, if partying totally emotional. I\'ve enjoyed shows both ways.  Does this mean I can have two Best Shows Ever?
Hearesy! ;)

So, when people say "that was the best show ever!" you assume they are talking about the best music ever played, by anyone, of all time, which is agreed upon by all present and not present, born and unborn?

Enter the magical world of context and interpretation.... :bantom:

I don\'t assume anything when people say that, I really could care less.  I am just saying that people sound silly when they say something IS the best ever.  It would be much more helpful and meaningful to others if there was an actual review of why a show was so good/bad(because saying that show sucked is just as inconsequential).  It takes away credibility from someone\'s opinion when a "best EVER!" is dropped.  Trust me I am not the only one that thinks this, it happens with all bands.

funny, matt was ranting about this the other day, said he stopped reading the boards because every-other-post read "best show ever, dude" with nothing to back it up; or conversely, "best setlist ever, sorry I missed it".

i only read this one because wolfman is a great writer ... he could talk about donkey kong and make it interesting.  :)

you took the words right out of my mouth PapaGFunk....

I have pretty much tried to stop saying "best _____ ever", however with 150+ Breakfast shows under my belt, I am sticking with the fact that these kids keep getting better every time they take the stage.  This is why we all come back for more....no?

^^
hell yeah that\'s what I\'m saying.

I think if you read the posts I make after shows you\'ll def see I don\'t toss around the title of "best show ever" like a hot potato. Several shows I\'ve flat out said they were one of the worst Breakfast/PB shows I ever saw. Like the 1000th show at Toads I thought was one of the lamer shows I\'ve seen them play in recent history.. and I came online and said so.

I\'ve seen some awesome shows this year but Metronome was the best one yet and this has definitely been the best year for this band yet. Do the math :P

I call \'em like I see \'em ;)
