Has anyone else heard, as reported in the New York Post, that Trey Anastasio is appartenly wandering the streets of NYC drunk?
NY Post (http://www.nypost.com/gossip/52749.htm)

September 1, 2005 -- PHISH singer Trey Anastasio apparently drinks like a fish. The frontman for the now-defunct hippie jam band was staggering past Jeffrey Chodorow\'s Meatpacking District eatery Ono when he was recognized by Chodorow\'s 19-year-old son, Max, a major Phish fan who had just finished dinner there. When Max slowed down his Audi A4 to get a closer look the other night, a slurry Anastasio asked him for a ride. Max happily let the tipsy tenor and his pals squeeze into his car and dropped them off at a townhouse on West 18th Street.
-
hah. my uncle wrote that...
-
HA
Nice.
for SER, Cobb?
-
Could that really be true? Just does\'nt sound right.
-
yep, richard johnson is my uncle. the bastard ain\'t of my blood though, the douchebag married into the cobbs.
-
I\'ve gotten drunk and wandered the streets of NYC many times. Sounds pretty normal to me.
-

Little grasshopper,
We are talking about Trey Anastasio the lead singer of Phish who has been wasted for the last few years. Apparently on OXY\'s, also, it is true that he has a plac in NYC now, which is probably because he is working on new music. I also heard a rumor that his apartment is nextdoor to Keith Richards.
-
I\'m just saying, a star like that just wondering the streets. If it was me our you i could understand, but Trey? Suprised he did\'nt get malled by overexcited fans.
-
It\'s NYC.
You know how many "stars" are walking in NYC daily? or how many live there?
I repeat that Trey is wasted almost regularly now. Listen to his new band.

True, I now see the light
-
also, imagine this. a place like your apartment is most likely what Trey is living in, maybe a little bit bigger. But because it is in NYC it is 3 times what you pay. Now, imagine sitting in your apartment when there is a whole world of things going on out your window. He gets tired of writing songs, has a few drinks and decides to take a walk. On his walk he stops and gets booze at any place he can. He walks for miles because of the oxy he is on and he is feeling good. and thus he ends up in the situation he is in.
-
Read the article. He was out with his buddies, and caught a ride with a fan. If Trey is constantly wasted, he sure does get a lot accomplished in that state, and always had. Sorry to sound bitter, but I\'m sick of the Trey rumor mill.

19-year-old son, Max
When Max slowed down his Audi A4
Kid\'s doin\' alright...
-
My bet if he was eating where they say he was is thats Daddys car given to a 19yr old.
Anyway. How cool would it be for a fan to give him a ride. Kid must have been so psyched.
Just like pulling up to Ron, Adrian, Jordan and Tim and they need a ride :)

The Meatpacking District is an easy walk from 18th St so it is very plausible that Trey and his friends went walking down there to drink. And he must have been drinking if he asked some douchebag teenager driving his dad\'s audi for a ride instead of hailing a taxi.
As far as the Post goes Public Enemy had it right
"Here\'s a letter to the New York Post
The worst piece of paper on the east coast
Matter of fact the whole state\'s forty cents
in New York City fifty cents elsewhere
It makes no goddamn sense at all
America\'s oldest continuously published daily piece of bullshit"
-

what do you mean doesn\'t sound right sounds like Trey to me, they just forgot to mention that he was grinding his teeth like a crack head
I\'m just saying, a star like that just wondering the streets. If it was me our you i could understand, but Trey? Suprised he did\'nt get malled by overexcited fans.
I don\'t think Trey is considered a "star" in the eyes of the normal New Yorker. To you and I and others on this site yes, but how many people do you think actually recognize him in that city?

nothing like a little family love.
hey, most everyone staggers drunk every once in a while (cobb excluded), why shouldn\'t Trey?

Trey is a GOD.
That\'s why.

i dont find trey all THAT impressive.
and i certainly had my fair share of drunken stumbling in my day.

He is one of the few lead guitarists that I have seen that can make 70,000-100,000 fans drive across the country to a remote location that most people never knew existed. While he may not be the best musician known to man, he and Phish were kings in their own right, IMO.

Not at moe.down.Can u tell?

granted, they played some good music, but come on, just because a huge amount of people were really into them doesn\'t mean squat. look at pop music. i just think trey is way overrated. thats all. he\'s good, but he\'s not the god people make him out to be.

I agree that to many Trey can seem overrated and that he comes off as a good musician. I believe this is true even more so for musicians who really know what they are playing on stage, and not listening to the music to listen. But, at the same time, isn\'t a God made by the people who choose to follow him and what they perceive him as. I am not a religious man by any means, I have strong feelings about organized religion but I do understand that while I may not agree with the God they worship, I do understand that people will and do live with a God in their lives.
So my point is this, while you may not think Trey is a god, for many others, we view him accordingly.
Is a God not what his followers perceive him as?

I haven\'t read this thread...I just want to comment on this...
So this guy comes into the deli with a phish shirt on and I asked em about it...he just shook his head in disbelief...followed by...I worked with these guys in vermont when i lived up there...the media just rips em apart...then i talked about TB till i was blue in the face...
-

please don\'t compare Phish\'s popularity to that of a pop group. There\'s a huge difference between the fact that a shitty band like N\'sync can gross $250 million in ticket sales in one year and the fact that thousands of people with great taste in music dedicate their life to traveling around and seeing a band that they love over and over again. Spacey\'s point about thousands of people traveling to a remote place to see Phish IS symbolic of how great he was, given the fact that the band was also touring all over the country the rest of the year. Pink Floyd could come out of retirement and draw that kind of crowd for a reunion weekend in a remote place, but there are no pop bands that could do that, if they were actively touring the country. Most pop fans only go to see the bands when they come into their home town.
Trey was the face, the creative juices, and driving force of one of the, if not THE, biggest and most popular underground band we have ever seen. Underground meaning that while they\'re hosting the largest NYE concert in the world (Big Cypress), the average Joe has no idea who they are. People love to hate Trey, they love to blame Phish\'s breakup on him, and they love to bash his new music. But, you can\'t deny that the guy is one of the most gifted guitar players that lived. To say he\'s overrated is like saying that Michael Jordan is overrated.
-
michael jordan is overrated....
-
i dont hate trey at all, i think he\'s a fantastic musician, but i think calling him a god is just silly. i think we\'re just arguing semantics here, which also is silly. i am by no means bashing trey, i just think that people put him on a higher pedastle than he\'s due.
and yes, the pop analogy was uncalled for.
i also am not gonna get into the organized religion vs. god debate. i\'ll just say that i too have many issues with organized religion, but upon closer inspection, i\'ve realized that most of them have the same message, but they just get caught up in stupid bullshit details and have thus strayed off the path of a true spiritual practice.
-
so true Mr. Cobb.
-
So long Trey, hello Timmy
-
exactly!

now that we are all on the same page again...

anyone mind if i close this thread? we\'re all on the same page again, and it was mindless gossip to begin with.

So long Trey, hello Timmy
I saw a band that was really good last night, though I specifically remember thinking that the shredding guitarist is probably playing what Tim was capable of as a 12 year-old.

Closing threads is weak sauce.

just dont keep it too sappy

I think phish is a great example of what drugs can do to a band...its kind of sad....but oh well...we got timmy now...
-
exactly, trey has seriously wasted himself as a musician. it comes across in his performance. i listen to the recordings from coventry and its disgusting how sloppy they were.
-
yeah, I still love all their old album stuff, but you can really tell in the later performances that the drugs where just killin his talent....thats why I dont like the greatful dead...all the of the music was drug influenced..and in the long run it makes the music horrible....
-
i hear so many people talk about how drugs make their music better and it makes me so sad, they\'re just lying to themselves to rationalize their drug use, yet at the same time killing their musical potential.
-
exactly...but the good thing is that we realize this....
-
anything in moderation is ok, right? not gonna lie, in the initial stages of \'new\' drug use i have played some of the craziest shit i dont think i was capable of playing previously. the good thing was that after the fact i knew i could pull off some runs and different rhythms when i was sober. i think the key is moderation, honestly. small doses and experimentation can unlock hidden doors in your head, but yes too much will eat away at your brain.
-
in my experience, anything musically i could achieve on drugs, i could also achieve (and then some) without drugs. my personal experience was that drugs were kind of a cheat for me. not just music. anything i thought i did better with drugs, i\'ve found that i can achieve much more without drugs, and being able to do so is a much more fulfilling feeling. this is only my experience, i am not knocking anyone else\'s lifestyle.

Does anyone have any written proof that Trey has a drug problem? I\'ve been hearing and reading peoples speculation for years, but I can\'t say that I 100% agree. I always thought that people were projecting their own drug use on their God.

I remember as far back as 98/99, people saying Trey had a cocaine problem. There has not been any documented proof, that I am aware of.

Maybe not documented proof but do you want to count the close ups of his face @ Coventry where you could see himn grinding his teeth jaw working back and forth
-
i think I read a guitarworld article a few years ago that he talked about being cleaner @ Coventry than he had ever been in his life. That he even stopped drinking coffee.

^^^^^^
-
I count those moments for sure.
Actually Slim, I believe Trey was cleanest at IT. He siad he took a seperate tour bus just so he could be by himself and not influenced. I think I have that guitarworld. Said he was meditating and doing yoga.
-
i read that spacey.. that whole summer tour he said that he knew the purpose was the music, and that tour did pull out some really good shows. 7.18.03 @alpine was a damn good time to be at, they played really well. \'04 leading up to coventry, not so much as far as what i saw.
-
I think Trey gave up on the final tour. I know Gordon was playing some of the best bass that I had seen him play or hear him play. At the Tweeter Center in Mansfield the second night after an unfinished Antelope>2001, I thought we were going to be wowed and I was but in a different way. As Fishman came up to the mic to do his vaccum solo all hell broke loose. It was the first time I had ever seen Phish lose their composure on stage in such a vivid way.
-
you\'re absolutely right Space.

I found a very interesting article/interview with Trey. It covers some of the questions we have raised in this thread. I will post the drug comment and link the site for you to read the entire article/interview if you choose.
J: “Anyway, you know how people talk a lot of shit? Well, you can tell me to fuck off for asking, but I have to ask since I’m on the phone with you. And because I’ve always tried to… I don’t know… stick up for you since I try not to believe things unless you see it happen or hear it from the person. So I just want to ask about the drugs, the rumors, how drugs played into the breakup of Phish.”
T: “Ok. Here’s what happens with drugs, as most people know. Drugs are the tip of the ice berg of an unhealthy situation. There’s no other way to look at it. There’s no question that after many, many years of chess and Tetris and work-a-holic-ness being our drugs of choice, that the scene started to rear its ugly head around Phish. At which point it was an easy decision: Well, I’m not living that life. There was definitely an aspect of that…. Everyone is fine, though.”
There’s a semi-long pause and I wonder if he’s pissed at me for bringing it up. Then he starts speaking again. And let me just say, when he gets going on a subject, it’s like a faucet. So much material, matter, information, anything and everything coming out. It sounds like informed stream of consciousness.
T: “Here’s how I’ll answer that question. What was going on out in the audience always seemed to line up pretty well with what was going on back stage. We had a big scene around Phish. That became a serious problem. Our backstage scene was huge. There were so many friends, so many characters. We had parties backstage, at least one or two that were ongoing parties from show to show. It was fun for awhile, then it just kind of took a turn for the worse. Right at the end it needed to end. You know what I mean? There’s no question about that. It couldn’t go on like that. When that started happening, the people who had been around forever… I remember having a conversation with Paul. In the beginning there were five people who traveled with Phish: The four of us, and Paul. He used to do everything. Paul Languedoc. I remember one day he came up to me backstage and said, ‘This doesn’t fit.’ There were all these people around and this darkness had come over the whole thing. It was seedy and depressing. I remember looking at him and saying, ‘God that’s the realest thing anyone has said to me in a long time.’”
J: “It was like that in the crowd, too.”
T: “Exactly. Well, I’m gonna guess that that was right around ’99? That’s what the hiatus was about. The whole thing was like one big gang. I think our guest list at Coventry was like, three thousand people. Everyone on our crew was taking care of this ongoing scene, and it was becoming more and more difficult to do what we were supposed to be doing, which was concentrating on the music and practicing. I always think about what was to me one of the great Phish shows. I just look at it as an amazing night, symbolic of everything good about Phish: the 1996 Atlanta Halloween show when we did the Talking Heads album. It was because we spent months practicing for that thing. All the way up until four o’clock in the morning we were practicing for that show. And then we played the music once. That’s always what it was like with Phish. That’s the way I like to work. I love writing. I love practicing. I love working towards that experience on stage. Discipline towards that ecstatic release. It became harder and harder because we were dragging this giant circus around with us wherever we went. Even the guys on the crew were complaining… ‘I can’t do my job because I’m spending so much time parking the back stage scene at the venue.’ It was completely out of control.
“So I can just about guarantee that I don’t need to answer that question. Everyone knows because they saw it out in the audience. I’m going to tell you the truth. We tried the hiatus and nothing was working. It had to stop. I know that was the right thing. I have so much hope. I want to continue to play for a long time, have that feeling of lighting people up. I really love that so much.”

now that\'s the kinda stuff I was looking for. Thanks for doing the legwork Spacey.
-
Very welcome my kind sir.
-
nice to see it in print, I can definatly see that happening
-
well... being a drug addict, and knowing a lot about the disease of addiction, i am highly suspicious of anything a self proclaimed drug addict says in an interview, but many addicts, myself included, realize what it is thats happening long before they are able to do anything about it. a close friend of mine who is also a drug addict in recovery used to sell trey drugs and is still very close friends with trey, and from what i\'ve heard, i dont think trey has quite solved his problem yet. granted, i dont think the overwhelming high profile is anywhere what it used to be, but sadly, i can still hear in his music that he\'s not quite ok yet. i dunno, this kinda thing isnt really anyone\'s business but his... of course when your job is providing people with music and you\'re not delivering to the caliber you\'re capable of, maybe it does become everyone\'s business....
-
of course when your job is providing people with music and you\'re not delivering to the caliber you\'re capable of, maybe it does become everyone\'s business....
agreed. itd be one thing if they were free shows, buuuut.............

If a kids dad buys him an Audi, does that automatically make him a douchebag? Just curious?
-
terrible comparison.. if the kid is already a douchebag, the audi makes him a little more of a douche.. if the kid is cool, and hes respectful to other people, then the audi is straight. this scenario was frequent at my school.
-
you can\'t ask me that. i live in westchester where most of the kids who drive an audi, mercedes, bmw, lexus, etc. are spoiled douchebags who have no real concept of what real life is all about. i understand there are exceptions to this rule, but westchester is kind of a spoiled bubble.
-
I have a Lexus IS300 parked in my driveway that hasn\'t seen the road in about three months or so. I so wish I was spoiled where I could just take the damn thing.
-
If a kids dad buys him an Audi, does that automatically make him a douchebag? Just curious?
it\'s not automatic, but most people just play the odds
