I know a bunch of you out there ride bikes like 9 year olds, heh. I need some advice. I want to buy a bike, but have no clue where to start. With the gas prices where they are and being relatively close (5 miles) to work (actually thats pretty far for a pack a day cigarette smoker, heh), and being almost in the worst shape of my life, I figured its time I get my ass and legs into gear. I currently possess Kevin Ross\' Giant/Specialized (cant remember which) somethingorother, but 1) its in CT, 2) its too small (its like a 16" frame I think, and Im like 6\'1"ish) and 3) he\'s gonna want it back sooner or later. What brands should I look into? Mind you that I am on a budget and am only lookin to spend $400 at the absolute max. I remember Mongoose, Diamond Back, and GT being decent bikes 10-15 years ago, but I see some of those in Wal Marts, Sports Authoritys and whatnot, so as you can see my knowledge is pretty faint in current years, and I am assuming those brands aren\'t what they used to be. Thanks in advance for the info.

Can\'t give you any advice since I have never bought a road bike...
Is that what you want, since it\'s mainly for going to work? Or do you want a mountain bike?

Hell, I don\'t know, didn\'t realize there were so many options, I thought bikes came in 3 categories: BMX/Freestyle, ten speed, mountain

There are hybrids as well and you can always equip a mountain bike with a set of road-friendly tires.

I have a gary fisher hybrid and I love it. A hybrid looks like a mountain bike but with skinnier tires like a road bike (aka ten speed with alot more gears). For day to day commute a hybrid is probably the way to go - since the tires are thinnner, you will go faster than on a mountain bike. If however, your traveling over bad roads with alot of glass, etc, a wider and thicker tire like a mountain bike may be what you want. Go to any bike shop and they can help you out. Zanes in Branford is excellent if your in that area. If the bike shop is good, you can tell them what you want and your price range, and they can find one to sute your needs. I suggest going in during the daytime during the week so you can get an owner as oppoesed to some college kid behind the counter. Most places will also give you free maintencance checkups for the life of the bike - always a bonus
get yourself a helmet too!
