Anyone else realize that the Cafe 9 show is on the same night as DSO @ Toad\'s??? I know that the 9 is small, but that is not the point. With nothing on Friday why not have it then?? Seems odd to me...gotta do some soul searchin\' for this one.
-
I bet cafe 9 has something booked friday and breakfast didnt get booked til after. It should by no means be a toss up or tough decision..i hope thats not what youre soul searchin Walsh. Like your signature says..\'Bring your Ass to the party\'!! and i know it aint gonna be watchin some cover band play music and pretending they are someone else up on stage. complete cheesiness.
-
DSO aint cheezy Aruny, at least not in my opinion, but they would have to have the ghost of Jerry up on stage to get me to Toads versus the Breakfast at the 9.......
-
Don\'t forget that the Darkstar shows are generally priced above $20. That is the equivalent of a couple Breakfast shows.
-
if breakfast wasnt at the 9 i wouldnt miss dso for he world.helluva show, but nothing compared to the boyz from staven!!
-
Come on now, give the boys a break, they do wht they gotta do
-
6up on the hubbiehubbs!!!!!!!!!!!!1
-
Walsh!?!? Soul serching??? As in, it is a tough descision on which one to go to? Come on, guy! DSO is a freaking pathetic COVER BAND. I\'ve said it before & I\'ll say it again.... LEARN HOW TO PLAY YOUR OWN SHIT!
-
Gotta love the Marcial wisdom. $20+ for a cover band is pretty outrageous, no matter how good they are. I remember seeing them for $12 or $14 (can\'t remember) and thought that price was still too much for a cover band, even if they do replicate the Dead experience.
-
i wouldnt put dso in the category of just a regular cover band..these guys arent like shakedown of riders on the storm..they are ser and if you like the dead, there unreal...either way,you know where ill be at!
-
DEFINITELY NOT A REGULAR COVER BAND AT ALL. $20+ IS PRETTY HARD TO JUSTIFY IN MY OPINION, THOUGH THEY JUSTIFY THE PRICE BY FILLING LARGE ROOMS WITH DEAD FANS.

yea but gettin up everyday and having to be the best Jerry/Phil/Bobby you gotta be is not something the have to do since they are all obviously good musicians and take the music that seriously, but thats what theyve chosen to do for the past how many years, and thats what I find cheesy.
-
So it\'s cheesy to pay tribute to the Best Band to have played this mortal realm ? WOW DSO may be a cover band but they play GD better than the current incarnation and make sure that the THOUSANDS upon THOUSANDS that missed the bus the 1st time get a chance to @ least jump on the trolley. DSO Cheese Factor ZERO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
totally hate to do it but im gonna, leiths right......whew, i feel a headache coming on.
-
Freddie, that is a mighty big step for you....
I am very proud of you.

The Dead died with Jerry. If you want to "get on the bus", buy the freakin\' CD!
If I was a musician with as much skill as these guys must have, that last thing I would want to do for my career is be a coat tail rider!
DSO Cheese factor - OFF THE SCALE!!!!!!!!!!!

i tried it and i think its workin..man,i think your onto something here....why have i never tried that?

I expected nothing less from ya Marcial. Having seen DSO 7 times and GD near 250 I gotta disagree w/ you. DSO channels that energy that seemed to dissipate w/ Jerry\'s passing. I really enjoy trying to figure out which show they are gonna play and having heard 2 shows I was at i gotta say it is WEIRD how ON these guys are. DSO is a taste of the real thing that new heads CANNOT get from a CD. The human interaction and the replication of the scene @ each show is something many take comfort in as the current incarnation of the band is on a different though no less exciting track.
People who bag on others just trying to bring others happiness cheese factor 10 to the nth degree.

i absolutely agree with you. i\'m only 18. my parents aren\'t dead heads, so i wasn\'t really introduced to the Grateful Dead until after the passing of jerry, unfortunatly. i had seen The Dead a couple of times before. they were good, but nowhere compared to the magic of when they had jerry when i listened on tape or disc. i had heard that DSO were coming to a small theater around my area, so, not expecting too much, i decided to go. from the first note, i was hooked. i could close my eyes and it was like i was actually seeing the grateful dead in \'73. THIS is what i had been looking for and what i had imagined i had been missing out on. i am thankful to have had the opportunity to experience what the sounds might have ben like at a grateful dead concert. i mean, maybe if i had actually seen the grateful dead with jerry, the novelty might not be as great, but i didn\'t, so this is the next best thing in my opinion.
as always, my $.02 are free.

THIS is what DSO is all about. Glad you had a great time.
-
Sorry I have to agree with Marcial.
DSO = LAME and I have seen the real thing many many times.
I would never ever ever even consider going to their show over PB.
If u wnat to have the experience of the DEAD live. Thats what the archives are for.
DSO = Grateful Dead is like saying the Machine = Pink Floyd
Sorry they always bore me when I have seen them. Nice folks but just dont do it for me
-
do they even pay royalties to the dead organization??.. ive seen their tour bus, they are doin pretty well. well a lot better than the Breakfast, whose songs and jams i care for more than most Dead songs personally, yet DSO will get more people at Toads than the guys did for New Years. that gets to me.
-
If you want to be technical about it, every single jamband today is riding Phish\'s coattails. Even if they don\'t sound anything like Phish. If Phish didn\'t make it, it is possible that almost none of this would be here.
I think The Breakfast often recreates Phish show atmospheres from 1986-1990. I like that.
DSO....they\'re good at what they do. And I can see why they do it. If you love the music you\'re covering, and are good enough at playing it to get paid, and you can draw enough people to it to live a phatty tour life, why not? I prefer being in original bands but I could see myself having a lot of fun in a Greyboy, Herbie Hancock, or Fela Kuti cover band if the jams were good and people were into it. DSO is alright by me. Let\'s just hope the Breakfast buries them in December!
-
Wow, this thread got outta hand. I was kidding about the soul searching, I will be at the 9. But my point was still that the Breakfast is playing about a mile away from a very big draw on the same night. Doesn\'t anyone look into this stuff?
-
Maybe the powers that be figured The Breakfast and DSO draw from different crowds. Like hardcore myopic improv rock fans will travel to The Breakfast and old tired hippie heads will go to DSO?

whoa, whoa, whoa there Wolfy... let\'s not forget that Phish was also riding another jamband\'s coattails.... to say that Phish is the reason we are all here today is kinda silly.... If not for GD, Phish would have never made it as far as they did. Phish didn\'t really blow up until after the GD (ie Jerry) died. Don\'t get me wrong, Phish was definitely influential, but the GD are the "road pavers" for this genre.
