Title: The Breakfast\'s Thanksgiving ChrisPitchFest Double CD Project Giveaway
Post by: bdfreetuna on November 27, 2009, 10:46:16 am
Allright, we\'ve got the flacs.
It sounds totally awesome. Not even done re-listening to this show again but some grassroots ish was going down the whole evening.

I don\'t remember a wrong note. Haven\'t heard one yet. Actually, this show is incredibly, over-the-top stellar. Too bad my H4N crapped out but, hey, Matt Vallo!

So. Who\'s good at mixing things up into 2 CDs that would flow just right?

I don\'t think CDs are very expensive at all.. I would love to cover album art and can hook up the crazy cheap printing costs which I\'ll just cover. Let\'s do it? Get my drift? Make like several thousand albums and give em out!

You guys in?

What\'s up with your H4n?  Mine shows "no card" when it starts half the time.  I just restart it and it\'s fine usually.  Annoying.  Have to check on the Samson/Zoom support site.

thumb drives.  If your serious about your sourcing you can get em out of china for under a buck and they are reusable.

just some thought about cds/dvd VS. flash drives:

1. I like CDR audio and mp3\'s disks play in my car.  my car radio does not have a flash drive reader.
4. CDR/DVDR are cheap. I don\'t care if they are not reusable..
5. flash dives have a higher capacity than CDR/DVDR.
6. I think flash drives have faster read/ write times.
7. I think cdrs are reliable. I have cdrs that are 10+ years old and they still work. flash drives are not a proven long term storage media.

Some card just don\'t work or are unreliable
Some cards are defective out of the box and can gives you problems:

When in doubt go with 0ne of these:

Good, alright! I thought this was about to fizzle out.

So here\'s what we need help with...

1. Remixing (or whatever you audio guys call this) the audio, sort of like was done for "Live As Is". We need it to fit on 2 CDs and split at setbreak hopefully. GLuft, maybe you can help me with this and coordinate whatever needs to be done here with the AV crew? Maybe it\'s already good to go as is, I don\'t know. Sounds fantastic already so I doubt much needs to be done here, but I\'ll leave this to the experts.

2. Artwork. Well, I\'m a graphic designer. Was sort of looking forward to this to be honest ;) ... if somebody can get me a high res working file of the new logo on http://www.thebreakfast.org that would come in real handy.

3. Buying & Burning the CDs. We will want to have the CDs have some art on them too, like Ken does for his DVDs. What is this Ken, Lightscribe? Please inform me as to what specifications the graphics for the CD itself need be in. If people want to pitch in money it will go mostly towards buying blank CDs and jewel cases. I want to look into alternative style jewel cases to the typical fat plastic double CD case... something with recycled paper and in perhaps a more compact form factor. This should also help curb expenses.

4. Printing. I have to check with our printer to see what costs are and various form factor options may be for the case. This will likely be cheaper than you think, but the idea is to print a lot of them. Fortunately, printing costs work on a backwards exponential curve in relation to quantity.

5. Money. Which will go towards buying CDs, jewel cases, and printing costs. If anyone here is loaded and likes this idea a lot, this might be where you can help the most.

Thanks guys!

edit: Okay, regarding printing and jewel cases. I do not have a hookup for fancy fold-out paperboard style double CD cases. So we are just going to need to do a bulk buy of blank regular double CD jewel cases, and then I can do the printing for the inserts on this.

Can anyone find better jewel case pricing than this?
http://www.jewelcaserack.com/jc2in1.html
http://www.cdrom2go.com/product/usdm-jewel-case-double-disc-clear-tray_655_76.htm  <--- single insert, reduces printing costs

I\'m thinking we should start with 1000, or maybe more if people pitch in more (a few thousand would be pretty cool... it\'s looking like it may end up costing about $0.75 each, give or take a little, to produce these), and we can always easily print & burn more when we need them.

edit again: regarding blank CDs... apparently either thermal or inkjet printable CDs are way cheaper than Lightscribe printable CDs. We can get inkjet/thermal ones for about $0.25/each, vs twice that much for lightscribe. I assume Ken is using an inkjet or thermal printer? So does that mean we have access to this equipment?

http://www.cdrom2go.com/catalog/inkjet-printable-cd-r-media_6.htm
http://www.cdrom2go.com/catalog/thermal-printable-cd-r-media_7.htm

edit again: regarding printing of CD inserts... to save costs we will want to do a single or double panel 4.75" insert. Album art on the front and track-listing and other info on the back. This only costs me about $100.00 (single panel) or $150.00 (double panel, or two-fold) to print 1000 of these on recycled paper. I\'ll cover this and the design. So we just need people to buy blank CDs and jewel cases and help with the printing on the CDs themselves. I\'ll probably go for double panel as it will be more fun to design and look less "bootleg".

Sounds like a plan, Tuna.  Do we need to get the band to sign off on this?

I\'ll check with Matt and Chris to see if they can work with me on post-production.

Good question.. .. I\'m pretty sure the band knows about this but is leaving it up to us. At least none of the guys have said anything to me and I know they must have seen the thread. Maybe one of you going to The Saint or who will see the band around soon can ask? Or I\'ll give Adrian a call later.

Can\'t imagine why they wouldn\'t be all about this though

I agree.  Just making sure...

Gonna be tough to split this up on 2 CDs.  There was no setbreak.

I\'m thinking we could get creative and put the encore on disk 1.  Kinda like having dessert first.  :-)  I\'d rather not break up the continuity of tracks 7-12: the "ChrisPitch Birthday Seg-Wich"

you know if the goal here is just to raise awareness, why burn a whole show?  I worked on a proj like this for RAQ a few years ago called live and alive.  We decided one cd was better than two.  Cheaper. more likely to be listened to. quicker. easier to distribute. think of it like this, if you have 100 cd\'s in your bag would you rather hit 100 people or 50?  instead of a full show (which always has a flaw or two that the fans can ignore but the newbs might pick up on) we did a \'best of\' made up of live tracks.  None to long either.  Newbie freindly.  Shorter concise SMOKING versions of our favorite songs.  Don\'t think of this as an album for yourself.  This is a marketing tool.  We are looking for conversion numbers here.

Take this with a grain of salt, who am I but another fan...  But that\'s the way I see it.

Krispy, good points man.

My feeling however is, that this was really a perfect show. There\'s nothing I would leave out or want to miss. I also think that *either* CD 1 or CD 2 would be really compelling to anybody that listened to them.

Also, we\'re trying to do something really great here :)

As for expenses, I think we have that better covered than it may appear. I mean, if I can get about $500.00 in total donations, we can do this *really really* well and I\'ll cover the rest.

There\'s no reason to say this won\'t be the greatest album ever produced for the band. In fact, I\'m fairly certain it will be.

We are looking for conversion numbers, yes. But this is also a gift from the community back to the community, to the band, and to new listeners. If The Breakfast hadn\'t played an absolutely perfect show I might be more open to cutting some parts out. But in that case I probably wouldn\'t be coordinating this effort. See where I\'m coming from?

Gluft: I agree. Let\'s do it like this:

CD1:
01. Intro >  (probably leave this out to save space and get right to the music)
02. Vermont Song
03. Escher\'s Etchings I >
04. Escher\'s Etchings II >
05. Existential Funk
06. Escher\'s Etchings IV
14. Peaches En Regalia >
15. Synergy

CD2:
07. jam >
08. Tribal Funk Affliction >
09. Garcian Fishbowl >
10. Sundance >
11. Garcian Fishbowl >
12. Tribal Funk Affliction
13. Rush

Is this going to be the same audio that\'s already up on archive.org?

Yes. But with post-production. So yes, people can hear it for free as well. But we will produce some really super quality hard copies, half of which to distribute freely (500 for now), and the other half (500 for now) we will give to the band to sell at the merch table. We will produce these so well that the hard copies will be a compelling item even with the free audio available.

I do.  I misunderstood your target audience.

from a business stand point is very hard to sell the same product that was once or is now free.  you could always remaster and sell a tits perfect sounding version, and then do a \'highlights reel\' of choice selections to give away.  That way your freebie does not discredit your sale-able goods.
Title: The Breakfast\'s Thanksgiving ChrisPitchFest Double CD Project Giveaway
Post by: bdfreetuna on December 02, 2009, 11:11:17 am
Here\'s how I vision the marketing, and since we are pitching in to produce this at no expense to the band, we can really direct it any way we choose:

500 or 1000 >> to the merch table & online sales. The band can use these to raise funds and sell them on the road for probably $10 each.

500 or 1000 >> in the hands of Bfam to give away to people that will enjoy them and other people of possible influence.

And we can easily re-up production any time once the initial work is done :)

I work in an advertising company with my last name on it... not that it makes my ideas more valuable than anyone else\'s... but it does make me want to say "trust me on this" ;)

edit:: Krispy, looking at the Crash Mansion & FTC shows... maybe a Turkey Tour Sampler can be produced (perhaps with a coupon for $2.00 off the Thanksgiving album?) from all three Turkey Tour shows as well? Good idea, no? I\'ll leave you in charge of this if you\'re down, seems like a great idea for something more easy to hand out to people more instead of a handbill or something. What track list would you have in mind combined out of these three (keeping in mind the Sully\'s double live album is going to get put out at about the same time if you want to do this) .. ?

uppity as in what exactly? so this is what it has come to, doing good things = uppity? see my post above, I guess.. or better yet contribute to the effort. Nobody has to contribute and nobody\'s keeping tabs on anyone else here, so it\'s really alright either way.

you might see this as cute, Leith, but we are actually doing it. You will want one, and you can have one for free, so need not worry about it.

Quote from: Yoda;247767

good question. Since we are producing these at zero cost to the band, they could sell them for $5.00 for all I care. Or give them away for free. I really don\'t care, they\'ll get half of them to do with what they choose.

I can\'t imagine it\'s that hard to give away well produced CDs full of amazing music.

telling me to eat a d was getting uppity. Just because I find this cute doesn\'t mean I should eat a d.

Hmm contribute to something that is already free, I have already given 4 copies out of and posted a link to the free recording in 4 places?
Nah but go ahead and produce these 1000 copies that will be released in the new year most likely and will probably have been superseded by an even better show which people will probably listen to more because it\'s a better show and free.

These efforts could be put to better use as merch table recordings have not and most likely will not ever make a big mark for this band.
If the band is going to make any money off their shows they really need to get their management on it and get recent recordings on Livedownloads or something similar.

Since they don\'t play as often as other bands I would think the shows would sell rather well and with the recent increase in taping equipment quality in the A/V club I think this is more feasible than ever b4.

again just my opinion man
Title: The Breakfast\'s Thanksgiving ChrisPitchFest Double CD Project Giveaway

if you take "eat a d" as any kind of insult you should probably go eat another one

my opinion is that this thread is essentially open for those willing to contribute to the effort. If you think there\'s better ways to direct our energy, lead another effort.

I never claimed this was going to raise $1,000,000 for the band or solve the world\'s problems. But we are going to produce a really cool collector\'s item that also will happen to be a great live CD and it will also happen to raise money for and awareness of the band. I\'m sure the band has their own plans for future albums... this has nothing to do with that.

this is what I and those who want to help are doing. any negativity directed at this effort is really uncalled for.

moving forward, please.

I buy from supermediastore.com
I just paste up some logos to fit on dvd labels and put copy
on my laser printer copier glass and run label sheets through.
I feed my camera onto dvd to a consumer dvd recorder.
Then make copies on a high speed dvd dubber.

You may want to check with the band how many copies they
want out of this show. Also if it should be free or charge a few bucks.
1,000 copies seems a bit much for one show.
Great Idea! Maybe start off a little slower and see how things go.

Yeah that thread was a good idea....how can someone listen to Ultraviolet Hippo and then the Breakfast and possibly think UVH is better? Makes ABSOLUTELY no sense. I saw them play in Southern Illinois, and they did a cool Star Wars theme > Trance, but thats about the only good thing I\'ve heard come from them. Yep, was a good idea. Unfortunately I do not have the capability to do this alone. And also I lost my job and no longer have easy access to many of these resources.

Still willing to do design and pitch in but with the upcoming release of the NYE live album I doubt there is much interest in this.

2009-12-09 - Well, every project needs a deadline. Probably all the work will be done before this point, but it seems appropriate that we may initiate the Giveaway at the Breakfast\'s indoubtitably triumphant return to:

Stone Church
Newmarket, NH

Autumnation laughs in your general direction.
