Good luck Matty O. It\'s a nice treat when life is looking up for someone.

Good for Matt.... That being said:
Lady Gaga - saw her on AI and I threw up in my mouth a little bit when I actually kept the song on for 1 minute before I went to take a piss and my wife changed the channel.
Gym Class Heroes - Never heard of them, but if they\'re opening up for Lil\' Wayne, then I probably don\'t want to hear from them.

Didn\'t expect anyone to take my comments re: Matt O personally.... it\'s not like I said anything about you. But yea if you really want my opinion making music for big corporate TV commercials is sorta sell out. Who cares what I think though, you certainly shouldn\'t. I\'m glad you\'re paying the bills and from what I\'ve heard of Urban Fetch that\'s certainly not sell-out material. If you\'re taking this as an insult you\'re reading between lines that don\'t really exist.
I\'m a graphic / web / print designer with around 150-160 clients. Also play guitar in the recently formed band Astral Projections although I wouldn\'t call that a source of income as of yet.
I think my main point is that Lady Gaga is some wack shit compared to Breakfast. Good for Matt... but yea he sold out.

matt left the band high and dry with pretty much no notice, while they had a national tour planned. he put himself first, and left the breakfast hanging. do i blame matt for leaving? no. but the way he did it was pretty shitty, and imo, was pretty much the death blow to the band.

You\'re right Jim. The band is not dead just not a viable National Act for anyone to want to invest in anymore.

Jordan being in the band is great musically but from a business sense (ala touring) it is less great.

hey folks, what up? I check out the board from time to time. just noticed a thread about me. wanted to say hi. things are awesome over here. man, some of that negative stuff some folks are writing is so not true son. most folks have no idea what went on behind the scenes. no one to blame, just different paths and different desires that we had. I gave it my all for the time i was there. I still think the breakfast is one of the best bands out there and I look forward to going to a show when I am in town. I have no bad feelings towards any of the guys and I have been in touch with them. if you need to know something just ask. why all the negativity? wheres the love? wheres the love y\'all? you know we all need lots more love. end the hate. end the hate. its just music. peace.

the trio was hag and on it\'s LAST leg
matt o saved the day and made it really sick again.
2008 produced some of the best shows and jams and original music this band has ever played
yea the break up was not ideal and he did leave them high and dry before the tour but he also kept it going and served as the bridge to bring the real keyboardist of this band back.
Whatever happens to the breakfast in the future Matt O is pretty much personally responsible for me getting to enjoy at least 25 more awesome shows that I never thought I would. So I wish him well even if chester french is a cheeze ball or whatever. good luck matt.

Well fucking said Klout.
Some of the best shows the band ever put on were with Matt O. And since Matt is reading this I feel sorta dick for making "sell-out" comments, as I really with the guy the best.
That said, Sequoia has really stepped it up. I mean I was always a huge fan, "Sequoia side for life" , but the return of Jordan has really made the band better than they\'ve ever been.

yea not to even mention that his presence allowed the band to stay together and find dangle when ronnie left which never woulda happened if it had gone down to just tim and adj.
bottom line is that if matt had never been a member of the breakfast there would be no breakfast right now and there IS BREAKFAST RIGHT NOW regardless of anything else so good luck matt and thank you. hope the best comes your way creatively, financially and in all other respects.

keep sippin that kool-aid, kids!
klout, you\'re the headiest, baby! everyone knows the breakfast is only good when you say they are! fucking kloutshoes is more like it.
yeah, no shit jordan is the perfect keyboard player for this band. that\'s some "ser biz" intel you got there.
regardless, matt brought a whole new life and energy to this band that was heard coast to coast. that life left with matt.
jordan came back and the band is obviously still great, but with that, the breakfast has basically become a side project. a really good side project, but a side project nonetheless.
the musicians in the breakfast are better than the breakfast will ever be. i would really love to see them each be able to go out and use their amazing talents to make incredible lives for themselves. that is something that isn\'t going to happen with the breakfast.
kloutshoes, your boy ellis got out to go make a better life for himself. i want the same for my friends.

On my last trip to see friends and family in the OC beach towns, I saw so many douchebag scenesters that it gave me the idea to start a poserwatch website. Poser of the week is at every turn.

I think I\'ve reached the point where I am done overgeneralizing all people within a specific scene. I really like a lot of hippies (whatever that means today), but can\'t stand a ton. I\'ve fallen in love with certain hipsters, thrown up around others. Jocks can be hilarious and down to earth, but can also fulfill all of the negative stereotypes associated with the "jock." This goes for goth-sters, skaters, squares, whatever. It all comes down to the person being able to practice agency within a structure, someone who finds the balance between maintaining reasonable norms (to prevent chaos) while expressing their individuality. And in the end, I realize that I base all of this on my own perceptions and opinions. So what-thee fuck-ever. I\'ll still call someone a douche bag, but realize someone else is calling me a douche bag simultaneously. This is the case when we don\'t scratch the surface and think "our scene" is the "best scene," perpetuating the constant douche-bag conflict.
Music fits the same formula for me--of course there are certain cookie-cutter tendencies within pop culture that make money by taking advantage of the grand sucker, but there\'s plenty of pop shit I find to be righteous pop. If it sounds good, to me, I will listen to it... a lot. I just want to dance, and in this case, Chester helped me out.
That said, I don\'t think Matt is a sell out or a douche bag (I know no one was really saying that in this thread), but his departure style was dick and posting in this thread (especially the content of each) was pretty douche.
AlZ--I\'m with you on the poserwatch. I guess that\'s what I\'m trying to get at, there are real people in every scene and posers in every scene. I avoid posers, once I know they are truly posers.

yeah, no shit jordan is the perfect keyboard player for this band. that\'s some "ser biz" intel you got there.
regardless, matt brought a whole new life and energy to this band that was heard coast to coast. that life left with matt.
jordan came back and the band is obviously still great, but with that, the breakfast has basically become a side project. a really good side project, but a side project nonetheless.
the musicians in the breakfast are better than the breakfast will ever be. i would really love to see them each be able to go out and use their amazing talents to make incredible lives for themselves. that is something that isn\'t going to happen with the breakfast.
kloutshoes, your boy ellis got out to go make a better life for himself. i want the same for my friends.

Thank god for creating multiple points of view. Guess I\'m not quite ready to get all jaded just yet. I also disagree... The Breakfast is greater than the individual musicians, as great as they all are. If reality checks are what we\'re about here.

Agreed also. Timmy tour and all the divvied up side projects are nothing compared to bfast.
The whole is greater than the sum of its parts!
They are all awesome musicians and could go on to do other things but saying they are individually better than the whole just makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. kloutshoes!

well, at least you\'re consistent at completely missing the point. yes klout, i think tim should leave the breakfast and continue to play cover songs in new haven bars the rest of his life. seriously, get a clue.
the breakfast, while a great band that i love, are nothing. seriously. in the grand scheme of things, they\'re nothing. no one knows who they are, and there\'s about 100 people that like them enough to pay attention. they deserve better than that, and again, it ain\'t gonna happen with the breakfast.
there\'s more to life than just the breakfast and timmy tour. and while you may not get that, i sure hope they do.

This is turning into a really interesting thread.... A couple points...
1. All 6 (past and present) members have had the chops to make a professional career in the music industry. 2. The band has accomplished a lot, but several factors have heeded their advancement (Name change, merry-go-round members, lack of real management, lack of publicity, lack of touring).
Contrary to popular belief, I\'d like nothing more than for these guys to succeed and be as big as Phish, but right now, I\'d settle for them being as big as they were several years ago...

thats all well and good dave but still does not back up your previous statement. The fact that you want more success for your friends does not translate to the individual members being better than the whole. Regardless of the of the level of the recognition they receive or don\'t receive the breakfast has sick chemistry/synergy and that is not something that is easy to find.

it doesn\'t matter how good the band is. you can have all the sick chemistry/synergy in the world and still have no one know who you are. each of these guys deserves to be known, and once again, that is something that isn\'t going to happen with the breakfast.

Actually, it does....
Matt O - brief member of the band, left the band and is getting more exposure and do by playing with cheese bands... Adrian - had to cancel a TB gig because he got (what I can only assume is) a decent paying gig with Willie Waldman (or whatever his name is). Probably gets a lot of exposure with that guy and his touring troup... Tim - although he\'s not playing with anyone right now, he could probably be picked up by an established band, plus he\'s probably making more money w/ tips w/ the amount of solo shows he\'s doing than what he\'s making w/ TB right now... Ron - I\'m assuming that he\'s happy playing the music that he is... Chris - from what I\'ve heard, he\'d make a great studio bass player... Jordan - I\'m not sure what he up for these days...
The point is, I (we\'d) like to see these guys succeed as TB for selfish personal reasons, but it\'s not beyond the realm of possibility that TB may in fact be holding these guys back...

Yoda, Breakfast is about to hit their 2nd peak in popularity. By the end of this summer. Mark my words or not... the Breakfast are too good to ignore right now and post Phenway is going to create huge buzz. Rocks off Boat cruise with U-Melt = fine opportunity as well.
And playing the late night cabin Friday slot at Strange Creek?
Hey whatever though, if you really give up on The Breakfast Dave and ever wanna pull the plug on this site keep in mind I got server space up the whazoo, we can do a smooth domain transfer any time.
I think the best shot they\'ve got succeeding is as The Breakfast with the lineup they have right now and kicking some ass this summer.
I have no doubt these musicians could probably make more money in the short/medium term focusing on other things. But I\'d also like to think that for such serious and inspiring musicians it\'s not 100% about the money. If you really want your friends to be rich let\'s step up the promo effort so they can be rich *and* be The Breakfast.
Still stickin to Plan A.

I\'d love for this to happen, but they have to keep the momentum going after these shows.... \'00-\'04 (when I felt they peaked), May-Aug, they averaged over 10 shows a month. That equals exposure, a dozen shows booked through August in 2009 may create a little buzz, but it will most likely be fleeting buzz...

i actually agree with yoda, in that great, they rack up a bunch of exposure post-fenway and at strangecreek and hopefully at camp barefoot. which will be great for their NE gigs. but seeing as how they won\'t be able to follow up those shows anywhere else, the momentum ends there. someone from some non-new england state seeing them will be psyched - until months pass, there\'s only a handful of shows available to download (if they\'re checking the archive, otherwise they won\'t find even those shows), and no gigs scheduled anywhere outside of what i like to call max creek turf.
now, whether this is their death knell or just another bump in the breakfast road, who knows. but until they can tour consistently, they\'re stuck in new england, where folks have had ten years to make up their minds about the band already.

Food For Thought.... I always said that if TB didn\'t do make some moves to separate themselves from the pack, they\'d be the next Max Creek...
Max Creek Tour Dates 5/9 - The Warehouse 5/23 - Strangecreek 7/3 - Sterling Stage 7/4 - Sterling Stage 9/4-6 - Eastover Resort
Hubinger Street Tour Dates 9/12 - Connies 9/20 - The Star Cafe 10/4 - Ansonia Harvest Fest
Do you see a pattern...
On the other hand, Kicking Dasies, a group of 4 kids who have barely hit puberty, have 6 gigs in May and 2 in June already scheduled and just played to 2 sell out shows at Daniel Street. Granted their not making a ton of money, but what they don\'t make in cash, they\'re making up for in exposure...

Actually, there is... In theory, both are trying to succeed in the music industry... My personal opinion is that if TB was to succeed and move forward, they will have to play gigs that are probably below their standards... That means Art Festivals, Free Shows, bars that only pay the door... Kicking Daisies may not be my taste in music, but I give them an A for effort in getting out there and getting noticed... TB has had some major accomplishments, 3 or 4 songs on an MTV show, Mike Gordan sit-in, winning a Jammy... They should not be struggling to get gigs... Other past New Groove Jammy winners include: Yonder Mountain String Band, Robert Rudoply & The Family Band, Benevento/Russo Duo, Grace Potter & The Nocturnals... I don\'t think that these guys are struggling for gigs...

Yoda, how can you compare 4 kids that are now homeschooled and have no responsiblities except learn and play music to 4 30 year olds that have done this for 15 years and regretfully have never figured out to make TB work. At this point in their lives do you really think they have it in them to kickstart this dead horse? Deatgs a new beginnig in the grand scheme of things and i wouldnt be surprised if a whole slew of new beginnings arrive, no matter the cost.

I can compare the two bands because they are essentially both trying to reach the same goal; success in the music industry...

You\'re right, but in my opinion, if you\'ve won a Jammy (and that\'s the highest award for Jam Bands), then that should mean that you\'re doing something right and that should be a launching pad for better things....

I\'d never heard of the Jammy until The Breakfast won one. I wouldn\'t exactly call it a gateway to fame.
Pretty depressing to see people willing to put nails in the non-existent coffin of my favorite band, who\'s pretty much at the top of their all-time game musically and seemingly doing better in terms of tounout, at least in most place and when there isn\'t a Dead show on the same night.
Seriously. When the time comes, hopefully a long time from now, that The Breakfast no longer exists, at least I won\'t be that dick who said "oh I saw this coming for the last decade".
You care about the band and want to help them? Go to shows and fill up your car with a bunch of kids who\'d probably be blown away and want to go again next time. They don\'t have to be the same BFam you\'ve known for years, you know.

There\'s a shitload of kids around here who love Breakfast and never go on .info . .info regulars hardly represent the current Breakfast fanbase. Except maybe in CT where it should have been easy as shit for Breakfast to be regularly packing Toad\'s by now considering how many of all y\'all live down there.
I mean seriously, I go to CT shows and its like 75% people from this board, which = not a huge crowd but sometimes decent. Breakfast comes up here and it\'s 75% 18 year old kids who have only recently had their minds blown by this band, and it\'s gonna be a better turnout each subsequent show.

"Greatest Love Of All" by Whitney Houston
I believe the children are our are future Teach them well and let them lead the way Show them all the beauty they possess inside Give them a sense of pride to make it easier Let the children\'s laughter remind us how we used to be Everybody searching for a hero People need someone to look up to I never found anyone to fulfill my needs A lonely place to be So I learned to depend on me
[Chorus:] I decided long ago, never to walk in anyone\'s shadows If I fail, if I succeed At least I live as I believe No matter what they take from me They can\'t take away my dignity Because the greatest love of all Is happening to me I found the greatest love of all Inside of me The greatest love of all Is easy to achieve Learning to love yourself It is the greatest love of all
I believe the children are our future Teach them well and let them lead the way Show them all the beauty they possess inside Give them a sense of pride to make it easier Let the children\'s laughter remind us how we used to be
[Chorus]
And if by chance, that special place That you\'ve been dreaming of Leads you to a lonely place Find your strength in love
this should be the band\'s motivating theme song

Go to shows... Where? Albany, New Haven, Boston, Bridgeport, IL, MN, SD, PA? NYC is the closest and a 12:00 AM time slot is not the most desireable event when you\'re taking mass transit from another state. I remember the days at Tobacco Road when the band would finish up around 3:00 AM and we\'d be stuck until 5:30 until the trains started up again. Sounds great for a college student... I personally don\'t know a lot of people that would even be up for TB\'s style of music; I took my wife once and it wasn\'t for her...

That\'s what i\'ve been saying all along, but that just leads to the other same old discussion that new fans haven\'t heard half of the old songs so why should they take the time to write new songs blah blah blah

In any case, bitching gets nowhere. We aren\'t the band. We can\'t book their gigs. If you want the band to have more of a crowd at Toad\'s, help with promo. Just because we\'re 30 doesn\'t mean our hands are broken, last time i checked, our arthritis still permits us to hand out flyers.....
And what about the other 50% of the fans that don\'t live in New Haven anymore? We can suggest places to play, right? In NJ, places that they\'ve not yet hit, that could be fun include: Maxwell\'s (Hoboken), Colorado Cafe (Watchung), The Junkyard (Rochelle Park), Asbury Lanes (Asbury Park), Tierney\'s Tavern (Montclair), Crossroads (Garwood), Startland Ballroom (Sayervill), Dublin\'s Pub (Morristown), School of Rock (South Hackensack)...

New songs means progression... I think that TB has gotten into the habit of continually counting on the old standbys and recycling older songs for new albums (w/ the exception of Real Radio)...

Sure you can suggest places....but you\'re not the band. they\'ll go where they want. Forget NJ, when\'s the last time they ever played Providence, or even RI???? I can think of plenty places they could play, but its what they want. summer in providence is awesome with water fire, it attracts soooo many people...it would be nice if they got a gig in one of those little clubs. But.... like i said, i\'m not them.
I just feel like we always go around in circles with this discussion and nothing ever comes of it.

I agree they should play NJ, but with summer coming, maybe priority could be put on a touristy location with more crowds. I don\'t know many people who willingly vacation to NJ ;) (I seriously couldn\'t resist and had to write that!)

I hate to tell you, but the Jersey Shore is a major tourist location during the summer; Belmar, Point Pleasant, Seaside, LBI, Wildwood, Cape May... Part of the problem is that a lot (and I\'m not generalizing) of you guys in New England were given the impression that Jersey is dirty and you never got away from that. Well, I enjoy CT beaches, but I can say that they\'re not real beaches because they\'re not on the ocean... I\'ve spent summers on the Shore and I\'ve spent summers in the Cape and I enjoy both... But if you did shows in RI or Bock Island, it\'d pretty much be the TB community with few locals (in my opinion) and you won\'t be growing the brand at all...

Lots of bands playing there... And that\'s the attitude that\'s going to only get them so far... Phish basically played Cafeterias, House Partys, Colleges and Bars until early 90\'s when they got some small theatre gigs and then opened for the Violent Femmes, Santana and was part of the HORDE festival in \'92. TB needs to just get out there any play anywhere... If they can get themselves an opening act for a larger band, that\'s good... It\'s not beneath them to be a supporting act... That\'s how they will get exposure...

Wall Street Journal reported that JF has retained most of Conan\'s viewers thus far. Prior to hearing Matt was gonna be on that night, I had never seen the show. Definitely didn\'t think it was great but he may still be trying to situate himself into the role.
Roots as the backing band is a novel idea.

You care about the band and want to help them? Go to shows and fill up your car with a bunch of kids who\'d probably be blown away and want to go again next time. They don\'t have to be the same BFam you\'ve known for years, you know.
I don\'t think anyone is really counting on you to play a major role in the rise of modern era Breakfast anyway :violin:

I wouldn\'t expect them to... And you said it right there - "Kids don\'t want to be nagged about how much better things were in 1999" - the kids are now adults and the new crop of kids aren\'t being cultivated... Going to see TB three times a week is no longer my priority and I go to shows when I can, but I remember what it was like when these guys were playing 3 and 4 times a week to a good size audience and I think that there are lessons to be learned form the past success... History does and can repeat itself in negative and positive ways...

I apologize for not having a wife and children, seriously where the hell did I go wrong!?. Unlike you, I am content with my life right now, even if it is living with my parents and working a dead end FedEx job, and I wish I scalped Phish tickets, maybe then I\'d be able to afford to move out. Obviously you have issues with your life in Jersey, but I won\'t poke around what is troubling you so much that you feel the need to spend most of your week being a downer on this message board instead of tending to your wife, children and/or job. If you feel the need to bring up my living situation and employment, you really need to find something else to occupy your time, I have stated that I have no shame about it, so I do not see the point, if you want my story as to why I am where I am in life, I will give it to you, but I do not need your pity or opinions about it. If you\'re trying to say you\'re better than me, sorry guy, you are entitled to that opinion, but as I have said before, I do not envy you, not even in the slightest way. Go see a therapist, seriously.

Actually, I\'m quite happy with my life in Jersey, with the exception of not being able to see the few CT friends I have... Maybe I was wrong to bring up the "living at home", but you went at me and I came back tit for tat. The discussion about TB is realistic, if you want to think that everything is okay in TB world then steer clear of posts that have to do with the status of the band. They will continue to come whether it\'s me or someone else. The truth of the matter is that the horizons aren\'t looking good for TB unless they do something to turn things around... Unless, I\'m completely off base, that\'s the truth as I see it...

I personally look forward to seeing them play out anywhere. If I had a 9-5 day job then I\'d be setting aside any \'play money\' possible to go out to shows on the weekends. I often work during the Friday/Saturday slots now, but this will change in the coming season. Until then, I am happy that I can at least see some shows until I start having babies.

Looks like they are still in the exposure stage.....playing a small SF venue the Bfast could book and sandwiched between two hiphop acts. They have a lot of big names working for them and appear positioned for huge growth and visibility.
Speaking of the hiphop acts they are touring with....I hope they don\'t suck. Hiphop is pretty much a dead genre for me unless there is really a differentiated, non-gangster artist or some accompanying live instrumentation.

I had the chance to see Matt perform with Chester French this past weekend.
They were sandwiched between two uninspiring hiphop groups and most of the show was mired in sound problems. However, it was good to hear CF live after getting to know the tunes and even better to see them performed with Matty O on keys and backing vocals. Very short, 40-minute set.
I feel bad for the people who lined up to see the headliner, Lady Sovereign. She cried about the sound problems and ran off stage midset, ending her show for the night. Pretty lame way to go out.
Got a chance to hang with Matt and check out the tour bus after the show. These are guys are certainly busy with a European tour -> American amphitheater tour on deck.
