Title: Biscuits in the UK - Review Added As Requested
Post by: boombox on January 16, 2008, 07:33:48 pm
On a whim, I just checked out the biscuits website and discovered they are playing London on 14th March, along with UM and The Bays. There is also a TBD show for the Saturday, the night immediately before jam in the dam. The Fri show is doors 7pm, with a 3 am finish, so it promises to be full sets.

Question is, do any of you know anything of this possible Saturday date? Is it definitely happening in a venue to be decided? I can\'t make both, but definitely don\'t want to miss bisco by hanging around too long.

Answer either here or by PM, asap - my credit card is burning a hole as i speak - and it\'s only about $40 for the ticket.

Edit - also who is headlining? Would definitely prefer bisco, so if there is a choice and they are alternating, would want to see a bisco headliner.

I think you would have more success on Phantasy Tour or email Dan Berkowitz.  He is putting together a travel package and might have some info for you.

I think regardless of who is headlining, I would love to see all three bands.  I def. think the Bays will play the latenight, but either UM or the Biscuits could headline.  Probably will have equal sets.

Thanks for the idea - couldn\'t get any extra info from PT, so have bought my ticket for Friday. As they have been on sale a month, didn\'t want to miss out.

Can\'t believe no-one here gave me the heads up though - no-one coming over for jitd then?

No matter who is headlining I wouldnt miss that if i were you.

You finally have the upper hand over us!

God I want to see the frickin Bays so bad...they were supposed to be at Camp Bisco last summer but they had trouble with their passports and couldnt get into the country.

(it worked out okay though, b/c the biscuits played an impromptu afternoon set to replace them)

Also, I was pretty sure they just announced the venues.

even if your you got the 12th ticket sold i wouldn\'t worry...they will def sell enough

They wouldn\'t have booked all of these Euro dates if they weren\'t positive they could sell a good amount of tickets

The show must go on!

i was actually pretty close to going this year....part of my decision not to go this year was that i was pretty sure they would at least do jam in the dam next year and i could build a trip around that, so, yeah i\'m totally down...start saving money now

maybe the breakfast will be invited to jam in the dam next year...
Title: Review
Post by: boombox on March 16, 2008, 07:13:26 pm
OK, so I promised a review - albeit it brief.

Crowd =  a few hundred at best
Venue = shit sound as regards vocals and also there were overwhelming bass freqs, which screwed up my recording (or more likely, I need a battery box and decent mics!;))

(I will probably just release my recordings as mp3s as a result of thsi distortion, just for folks to hear what got played, which will suffice till the other taper gets his up recordings.)

Acts:

The Bays:

Boring techno shit that went nowhere. I know the Breakfast and biscuits go for the techno jams at times, but you always feel like it\'s going somewhere and are waiting for the main song section to come back and wondering how they are going to find it again.

UM:

Setlist: Push The Pig > Jazz Odyssey > Miss Tinkle\'s Overture, The Bottom Half > Jazz Odyssey > The Bottom Half, EAT > Intentions clear > Eat, Wappy Sprayberry > Higgins, Plunger

Really enjoyed them on the whole - some good tunes and some nice unison guitar work. Vocals were OK too, when you could hear them, though as I have said elsewhere on this board, Tim could outplay both guitarists at the same time. It wasn\'t bad playing - some of the Allmans/Skynyrd/Wishbone Ash-type bits were quite impressive and tight as hell, but solos were just not very fluid. Drummer good too - showed he could play in a variety of styles. Bought the last two studio albums at the gig as a result, which were good companions on the four hour drive home.

Biscuits:

Setlist: Astronomy Domine, Caterpillar > Orch Theme > Caterpillar, Strobelights and Martinis* > Cyclone > Strobelights and Martinis, Air Song, Have a Cigar (W/ Jake of UM) *Extended Jam in F#

Barber had lots of monitor problems at first, which can\'t have made it easy, especially when he had to play the gig seated due to a broken (?) leg/ankle. Nice PF covers to top and tail the sets, though I\'m sure there was a RLH tease too early on. Elsewhere people have raved about the set, but though I enjoyed it, I wish they could have played a few more of the rockier tunes - guess I was hoping too much for a Story or Jigsaw, which no doubt will be busted out in Amsterdam. I think they felt they should be more techno in the UK as there isn\'t really a jamband scene here. However, that didn\'t stop Gov\'t Mule last year, nor sci the two times I saw them when they were here. Nice to hear Caterpillar and Air Song though.

Overall, well worth the $50 for a ticket and 7.5 hours driving - now, wonder if someone can get The Breakfast on the jitd ticket next year!!

thanks for the review...glad you had a good time. the bays can be a tough band to get into.  very downtempo and they can sometimes (from the recordings i\'ve heard) leave you with a bit of a blueballs feeling.  since it\'s all improv and they don\'t have songs and they don\'t rehearse, i imagine they\'re very hit or miss from show to show. i think their concept of the pure improv concert is great though.  the biscuits set does look very "techno" heavy and they probably could have opened some new eyes with some more trancefusion songs (emphasis on the fusion)...maybe an overture or crix or spacebird

\'Air Song\' is the best song they have written since Caterpillar.  It is going to be a MONSTER!  The version in Jersey was earth-shattering and the Langerado is just as good.

Have upped my very poor recording here:

though I may have problems as I am not showing up as a seeder, despite no obvious problems my end, aside from my usual firewall issues, which don\'t prevent me seeding via dime.

Regardless if you like \'Caterpillar\', ever since 12/31/04(first jammed out version) it has become a monster in some sets.  I was just saying it is the first composed song with lyrics, that wasn\'t just an overhyped jam, that shows potential.
