Title: The Cream Of The Crop: The Almost 13 Months Of The BFast Trio
Post by: Stephengencs on October 09, 2007, 09:21:22 pm
Though its only been about 9 weeks since Matt joined the band, it feels like, to me, that the new Breakfast quartet has been together for a long time.  I know they are still only playing songs in "crops", and there are a lot of classic tunes that have yet to get the Oestreicher makeover, but he has virtually seamlessly integrated himself into this musically tighter than a drum group that has been playing together since they were just punk kids from staven.  Its been truly amazing to see what has transpired in just over 2 months.

However, yesterday I busted out the DVD from my favorite BFast Trio show ever, and definitely in my top 5 of my all time Breakfast show list.  It was even better than I remembered it, though it actually made me realize that however sick they are with Matt on stage, that there was a communication, respect, and an unconscious unity for the sound they were creating, that they just cant yet achieve with Matt.  I am confident that in time Matt will officially settle and cure with Tim, Ron, and Adrian and start producing some of the most prolific music of our generation.

So, for the past day I have been thinking back to the days of the trio as well as the current
era we have just disembarked on.  I wanted to start this thread to hear what some of your favorite BFast Trio shows and/or moments are............

Oh and the show I was referring to, above, was the Rocks Off Boat Cruise.  This show is a gem as it is the unofficial spark that ignited the flame which took us to Camp Bisco this year.......

nyc boat cruise gets me everytime I hear it or watch the dvd.. from the beginning Ahoy! jam to that inspiring Eppy III... if you haven\'t heard this show, check it.. also my last time being blessed by Broseph..(nevermind, that\'d be Vibes)
lots of great trio shows though, if you ask me.  Portland and Vancouver come to mind, though I don\'t think they were taped.  Fucking Sterling Stage was nuts!! Sick tunage and a golgi bustout... memorial day weekend was nutty altogether, and strangecreek was a grimey one setter with a nasteee rust and a ridiculous Gladys, oh and how could I forget the Slack... def. dug the trio era, for sure..

An announcement was made that this would be the band\'s final show as a three-piece.

My favorite moment is in bold type. :)

red square, barefoot, st. paddys day @ utica,  4/21 (including after party) 2/2 and 2/3 at mezzanote come to mind,
the trio blew my mind so many times. I can\'t believe how owned i was by the new quartet, but the trio was so tight that stuff just happened so spontaneously that it was outta control. the first rocks off boat cruise was pretty sick too.

stevie this is a great photo (taken by jenny gaboury) . i, like Pec think Keene was pretty awesome, and i think since you started this thread it would be a good opportunity to show you this photo from the keene show.  Im standing right next to Stevie and during Rufus I yell to Adrian to show \'animal side\' a little love. he looks over and i didnt think he actually heard me but got up and walked over and played up and down the banister . that is a great three piece breakfast moment for me.

i feel like there were some moments and opportunities that we will never get again. for example, i doubt any people self proclaimed as a stinky man-crevice (i.e. taint) will ever get to regulate ser setlists (see 2/2/07 set 2 nd 2/3/07). i doubt i will ever indulge in ser chicken while gypsy-ing it up on the bands hotel room floor either (same weekend). i\'ve gotta say, the mudshark mansion enabled dome bfast magic. i miss gabo like a mothafucka, and many good times were directly caused by his presence in our taintly dungeon of despair. the trio was a great era and the band benefited greatly by facing that challenge. Ronny stepped up and created a full background that allowed tpalms to experiment with keys ad synth and to pioneer and perfect the simultaneous keys and guitar work, skills that make the quartet a f\'in powerhouse! we need to bring back the "ronnie spears!" chant for the freakout run

Hey as you so adamantly voice all the time to each his own and for me trio Breakfast was meh. I have always stood by my opinion that this band needs keys and will never sway from that.

I merely gave my favorite trio moment as was asked.

So how about killin\' your negativity over my trio views(which for now are null and void) and bask in the memories of those that did like it who are posting or will post.

Waaaa. You should know by now I will always voice my opinion in any and every thread I wish to whether you or anyone else does not like it is of no consequence to me.

As I have said numerous times before you don\'t like my posts put me on your ignore list or deal with them.

Matter of fact how many people did ignore my post before you decided to comment. It goes both ways man. I could not post but that is not going to happen anytime soon so join the other people that may have read it but just shook their head and went on w/o commenting. It\'s pretty easy to do (well most of the time ;) ).

I saw this trio show one time, it was nuts. They opened with an old funkadelic song called "mommy, what\'s a funkadelic?" and then dave peck walked out on stage and they played nothing but chili pepper songs for the rest of the night. It was nuts. Come to think of it, they never played a single breakfast song. And I guess dave made it 4 people. Tim was being nuts that night. Then dobson and upstate started singing songs from the dirty dancing soundtrack. Best trio show ever.

After tomatotron.

20 of my 27 shows have been trio shows. I def had a great time at them as they were always balls to the wall rock and roll.

2006-08-31 Utica, NY
2007-02-03 Syracuse, NY
2007-03-17 Utica, NY (St. Patty\'s Day)
2007-04-07 Asbury Park, NJ
2007-04-20 Syracuse, NY

These were all top notch shows but nothing compared to the Block Island > Narragansett > Albany run. That was one of the best run of shows I\'ve ever seen by any band.

you guys aren\'t making this easy!!

so, i decided to take it upon myself to make a trio best-of compilation. i took down everyone\'s show suggestions and their specific highlights (if mentioned) and then went back to all the setlist and/or bt/lma threads to see what everyone\'s highlights were per show. some listed here aren\'t available on the archive, so some got left out. however, among the ones that were listed, there was only two shows with one highlight and only three shows with two highlights. everything else had several.... including four shows that basically had entire sets listed (or else the highlight was a six or so song sammy!!). here\'s what i\'ve got so far...

so, over the next little while i\'m gonna go back and re-listen to the various candidates and try to figure out some sort of order. the ideal will be a show-like set of discs, but we\'ll see what kind of technical ability i can actually come up with. it won\'t be immediate, but it should be somewhat soon. hopefully.

The Trio was a wierd and awesome time for The Breakfast/PB. The extra space in the musical landscape let the band explore more, rock out harder, and mature as a band. There is no denying the telepathic connection between Tpalms-The Save- & Animal, and this band felt more like a single unit then ever during the trio period. Tim playing guitar & keys was awesome (IMO). Ron upgrading his gear and stepping up his game big time was crucial for the trio to survive. And Adrian being set up sideways next to the stage, allowed for a unique view of the always insane drumming that Adj consistantly brings to the breakfast table.

Here is my favorite 12 trio shows. They are in order by the date they went down, not by which ones I thought were the best. It would be to hard for me to rate these shows best to worst without going back and listening to them all. I caught a bunch others but these ones stick out in my head as the best ones. There are others that probably should be on this list (the Trio Freakout, Keene State, Providence, when they played "Psychedelic Breakfast" to name a few) but twelve is way more then enough already. Something special took place on each one of these nights. I bolded the highlights. Lots of the shows are completely bold, go figure :wah: :banrock:. The only one of these that I wasn\'t in attendance for was 2/7/07 Stone Church. I shoulda been there, lets leave it at that.

see, gfunk\'s post is exactly what i\'m talking about! you guys make it hard to pare down into a reasonable amount of discs when the whole show is getting listed. don\'t get me wrong, i tend to agree that when a show is hot most of the songs are too, but i don\'t want to dish out full dics from single shows, ya know?!

ok, time to get back to listening....

I\'ll bite.

The first one that comes to mind was an epic journey to Burlington with good friends...
We were early arrivals @ Club Metronome, got pretty loaded before the show started, totally baked as usual. Chillin near the bar we saw Tim walk in and dude spotted us and gave us the nod pre-show. From the first note of the show the vibe was totally brought. We stood right up front and soaked it up, and I remember afterwards thinking and calling it the "best show ever!!!".

2006-09-08 Club Metronome, Burlington VT
Honey Butter, Escher\'s Etchings > See the Light, Future Peek, Gravity, Episode 3, Intension, What the Funk, Love Lake, Buquebus > 2001 > Buquebus, Drums > Taboo Or Not Taboot

My other favorite was probably 2006-11-22 @ Sully\'s turkey tour. Tim busted out the Strat which IMO almost always makes for a top notch show. And no doubt this show stands out in my memory as a great example of why Mr Palmieri owns the guitar and everyone else might as well just give up practicing. Absolutely beautiful "The Late and the Great". Cozy intimate venue, what a blast.

Then the week after 2006-12-01 @ The Century Lounge they totally brought the vibe again. Just one of those shows that had me hooked from the first note. And some funky dance circles were breakin\' out, peeps were gettin down!

So those are my top 3 that I actually made it to. I agree the Boat Cruise is siiiick on tape but I wasn\'t there so that\'s that.

13 months = 12 apostles + God= TimmyP, Ronspears, Adrian, Striker, Gencerelli, Bazerker, Slim Pickens, Josh Dobson, Greg Ellis, Chadwix, DavePeck, Lexi and Timmy taint.

it can come out a major different way if we add in wolfman, paul ryan and myself, but i\'m not all the way crazy.

What can I say once you\'ve stood on the z-axis that can only be found in Asbury NJ, you are changed, it\'s a special place.

Most def....
Here\'s to hoping that SuperWook knows what he is talking about and we get to revisit the Z-axis this december.....

4/20 at the Mezzanote,

Rocks Off in NYC,

Camp Barefoot in VA,

the whole 4-night run from Block Island to Albany,

& the 1st ever trio show ever at Corner Pocket

Although I can not honestly say I was sad when the death of the trio was announced....

I can definitely say that I am very happy to see such a large percentage of the fan base have such good memories of the band in this form and it\'s comforting to know that this era in breakfast history will be remembered mostly in a positive light. It\'s also cool to be able to listen to past performances from three distinctly different eras. It\'s all a journey and I am very thankful to be HERE NOW!

when the "death of the trio" was announced, i was not sad either- in fact i was extremely EXTREMELY excited!  however, i think i was fully able to appreciate the three piece version of this band for what is was worth, and they certainly yielded some incredibly amazing times i was fortunate enough to be a part of, which a select few from this fanbase have not seem to have been able to do.

Like i said I am glad so many people got so much out of it and kept giving the band the love and support to get though it because I saw four shows in the year of the trio and none of them were incredible or amazing.

Well I think The Breakfast was really on  a high note in terms of consistantly kicking ass in \'05 and early \'06 before Jordan left. The band was incredibly tight and increasingly innovative during this period.

Then afterwards I had mixed feelings about Tim\'s use of synth and guitar at the same time because IMO it usually didn\'t sound that cool. The shows were more "hit or miss" I guess.

That said, some of the best Breakfast shows I saw were as a trio. And the absolute worst show (excluding equipment meltdowns or PA blowups) was early this year at the Iron Horse as a 3 piece, I was so bummed that weak sauce was brought to my hometown that I didn\'t see them again until Vibes when they debuted Matt.

So I guess looking back more fondly than I felt earlier this year..... space and distance make the heart grow fonder.
