The baseball thread, like the Red Sox, seemed to die somewhere around midseason. But now, again like the BoSox themselves, it\'s August and it\'s time for this thread to make a comeback.
Postseason picks, anyone? Freddie? :)
My picks coming very soon (probably by the time you read this).
-
A few prefacing statements
1. I am a Red Sox fan. I am bias. Sorry...
2. I believe that, if there is a deserving player, the Cy Young and MVP Award should go to a player whose team made the postseason.
3. My picks have been wrong every year except for once (I picked the Braves and Yankees every year for about 5 years. It worked once.).
The King\'s American League Predictions
Postseason
AL East: Yankees
AL Central: Twins
AL West: Athletics
AL Wild Card: Red Sox
So without trying, I ended up picking the same postseason as last year. My bad...
- Boston defeats Oakland in 5.
- New York defeats Minnesota in 4.
- Boston defeats New York in 6.
AL MVP: Gary Sheffield, Yankees
If A-Rod\'s subpar season does one positive thing for the Yankees, it\'s making Gary Sheffield the MVP. I think that Manny Ramirez deserves it, but the votes that David Ortiz (rightfully) gets will detract from Manny\'s push. Unless the Red Sox overtakes the Yankees in the East on Manny\'s shoulders, it\'ll be Sheffield.
AL Cy Young: Mariano Rivera, Yankees
Boston has Pedro Martinez and Curt Schilling. Oakland has Mark Mulder, Rich Harden, and Tim Hudson. Minnesota has Johan Santana and Brad Radke. All of whom are there to split the local votes with each other while Mariano takes the Cy Young. He\'s been the only consistent (consistently great, for that matter) pitcher on a Yankees staff that is usually full of dominant starters.
National League coming soon... hopefully somebody cares.

The King\'s National League Predictions
Postseason
NL East: Braves
NL Central: Cardinals
NL West: Dodgers
NL Wild Card: Astros
- Houston defeats Atlanta in 5.
- St. Louis defeats Los Angeles in 4.
- St. Louis defeats Houston in 5.
NL MVP: Lance Berkman, Astros
If I could give the MVP to Pujols, Rolen, and Edmonds, I would. But if I\'m correct and the Astros make the playoffs, it\'s going to be on Lance Berkman\'s shoulders. In which case, he deserves the MVP Award (Don\'t be shocked if it\'s Barry Bonds, though. Sportswriters love Barry Bonds... because they don\'t have to pitch to him).
NL Cy Young: Jason Schmidt, Giants OR Carl Pavano, Marlins
Whatever happened to 20-game winners? I have no freaking clue who is going to win this award. Oswalt has 9 losses, Clemens doesn\'t have enough decisions (14-4), and they\'re both on the same team. It\'s Schmidt (15-6) or Pavano (16-5) by default. Their ERAs are about the same, so I say it\'s whomever has the better record come the season\'s end.
World Series: St. Louis defeats Boston in 6. Sorry, the Cardinals hit EVERYBODY...
-
Well I have to throw in my $0.02 here. I\'ve been a Cardinal fan ever since 1967 when they beat the Bosox in 7 exciting games. They are a thing of beauty to watch this year. How does a pitcher go through Walker, Pujols, Rolen, Edmonds without getting slammed hard? The answer is not very often, these guys are devastating!
As for the pitching staff that no one (including me) gave any chance to at the beginning of this year, they now have 5 starters with 10+ wins, and lead the NL in ERA!
So bottom line Drew, I agree with your World Series pick!
-
hey mark, were you around when shoeless joe jackson did all that shady buisness???

I\'m making myself sick today by listening to WFAN and all these idiot Yankee fans who are demanding that the Tampa Bay Devil Rays forfeit both of today\'s games against the Yankees because the Rays chose to stay with their families and homes in Florida during a hurricane. Ugh. They could just play a doubleheader Tuesday and Thursday. And as a Yankee fan, wouldn\'t you rather win on the field than forever hear about how you cheaply won the division by one game? Fortunately host Richard Gear has some sense in him. The only reason I am still listening is because MLB is supposed to announce a decision any minute.
-
ESPN.com reports that the Yankees are demanding a forfeit. I can\'t believe they would even want that considering the tarnishing potential it carries. Cashman is clearly scared shitless of losing the AL East race right now. Well, I\'m sure if the hurricane were in New York and the Yankees couldn\'t get to Florida, they would graciously forfeit the games

Count me among the Yankee haters - I hope the Red Sox win that division - but this will finally be the Brave\'s year - if the current Boston team can\'t win the series at least a former Boston team will win the series!

So far so good Pitchie! If Pedro gets the win today you will have to be upgraded from "Pitchie" to "Swami".

not happenin... ugh... great pitching Pedro

Swami status: GONE.
Still Pitchie after all these years.

I wonder is Wolfman will be suggesting free PB concerts at the Hawk\'s Nest to the activites staff at UHartford now that he lives in town.

You know you\'ve been bludgeoned whenever Pedro Martinez pitches worse than Pedro Astacio (former Met). A humilating showing. Way to nullify Friday.

^ That is fuckin\' hilarious!!!! Hells Yeah! Now that is a sports fan. Tru dat!
-
Yankees/Red Sox this weekend (didn\'t we just do this?)! There could be a 2.5 game difference in the standing by the time Pedro takes the mound tomorrow.
But while winning the division would be nice in itself, the real treat would be not having to face the Twins in a short series... Kevin Youkilis for President.
-
SER game last night! Holy smokes!
-
The battle for fourth place between the Mets and Expos continues to brew in the National League East. Tonight\'s game is crucial. Will Tom Glavine get his tenth win? Will anybody read this post?
Have to go Red Sox two out of three again with Sunday\'s game, a colossal blowout, deciding the series.
-
Hope you didn\'t just jinx \'em....
-
Who the Mets? They\'ll be fine. Fourth place is ours. Schaefer on ice.
-
I was referring to the other guys.....
-
I think the Sox are beyond jinx capability
-
About 5 weeks ago I was talking with a downtrodden Yankee-fan friend who was worried becasue the Sox were catching up. I told him not to worry, that the only reason things were getting closer was so that the Yankees could clinch the AL East in Fenway Park during this series. Well, we\'re two games away from seeing that one come true. Imagine the Yankees celebrating their division title right in front of all the Sox fans. 1978 anyone?
I\'m going to the game tonight and feel nothing. What am I rooting for? For nobody to get hurt? For Rodriguez v. Vartiek II? For the Mets?
Here\'s something weird to consider, although it can\'t happen: Imagine the Yankees come into Boston, sweep the Sox, and clinch the division in the last game. At the same time, the Sox clinch the wild card due to Anaheim losing. Do the Sox celebrate on the field? Do the Yankees? Do the fans cheer at the end of the game due to clinching a playoff berth? Do both teams have champagne in the locker room? Remember, the Sox went pretty crazy last year for just clinching the wild card. It would certainly be a funny situation.
-
that would be funny......open both locker rooms and party together

My Cubs World Series prediction just took a major hit as the Mets beat them 4-3 in 11 innings. The Mets were down to their last strike trailing 3-0 in the ninth before Victor Diaz hit a three-run blast to tie it. Then, in the 11th, Craig Brazell homers to win it. Who are Victor Diaz and Craig Brazell, you ask? They\'re either the future of the Mets or members of the Major League Baseball Witness Relocation Program. Either way, the Mets are fucked for the future and the Cubs are fucked today.
HOW BOUT THEM AMAZINS!!!
-
Wolfman,
How was your Red Sox/Yankees experience last night?
I\'m sure the was a large percentage of meatheads as usual since Massachusetts is the breading ground for dumb, shithead guys (Actually it may be the most of Southern New England)
-
Hey Al, did you knwo that the rest of the country owes gratitude to Massachusetts for its independence from Great Britain? You didn\'t? Come on now... Paul Revere, Concord, Lexington...
lol

I always vote freedom first!!!

OK The Angels just took the A\'s 2 outta 3 to pull within 1 game of the Division lead but they suspended Jose Guillen for inappropriate conduct hmmm? So The Angels still in it and if the Cubs keep self destructing The Pads may stumble into the wild card over in the Senior circuit. Sweet!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Ok... who watched the game last night?..... buncha fuckin juveniles out there... tension was high, I know, but come on guys....
First of all, Lofton (I think?) elbowing Mientkiewicz (spelling anyone!?) was TOTALLY unnecessary. Yeah, he was takin up a lot of the base, BUT, for gods sake the out was made way before Lofton got to base, so the elbow was really stupid.
Even more stupid was Astacio retaliating and throwing the ball behind Lofton at his next at bat. Of course he was pissed, but there\'s no reason to stoop to that level.
Worst of all was that Yankee pitcher (forget his name, sorry) throwing that ball RIGHT UNDER Robert\'s chin. Throwing behind someone is bad. Aiming for their head is dangerous; if he hadn\'t tipped his head back fast enough it woulda cracked him right in the jaw. That really pisses me off.
Question for those who know more than I do: Why was Torre ejected but not Francona? There must be some sort of mandatory rule that I am unaware of.
Well, we won anyhow. Good prediction Pitch! Boston battig was pretty serious the last 2 games....
-

Torre was ejected because Halsey (?), the pitcher who threw at Roberts, did so AFTER both benches had been warned. I actually didn\'t know that rule either, but that\'s the explanation I learned from the wonderful commentators at the YES network.
-
Ah! That makes sense. Thanks Drew.
-
Is it just me, or does Arroyo occasionally look just a little bit like Aruny? (Of course Jon\'s hairdo is much more stylish, but...)
-
Just you.
-
Tonight Arroyo gets to duel Scott Kazmir, a lefty the Mets dealt to Tampa two months ago for a shoulder-surgery-in-waiting named Victor Zambrano. He shut down the Sox two weeks ago. Kazmir, not Zambrano. He shut down his career the day he moved to Flushing, which is an appropriate name for the home of the Mets. Sox win 5-3.

Angels just pulled into a tie for 1st w/ the A\'s. Looks like another last second run @ the playoffs. Jose who?

Also coming in 2009:
The Breakfast headlines Bonnaroo and holds their 3rd annual Break-fest which attracts 4,874 people.
"Bigger Lebowski" The Big Lebowski sequel.
Phish get back together for summmer tour...Alpine and Deer Creek are at 80% capacity, Great Woods sells out the day of the show on walkup ticket sales.
In February, Jeb Bush is sworn in as President, succeeding his brother.
In March, Iraq becomes the 51st state.
Sox clinch their 5th wild card in 7 years, lose to Yankees for 5th time in 7 years in ALCS. Mets sweep Yankees for championship. (Scott Kazmir wins games 1 and 4 for the Mets. The trade to Florida was annulled back in March 2005 when new Mets GM Omar Minaya won a lengthy court battle to prove that the Devil Rays knew that Victor Zambrano was hurt at the time of the trade.)
-
Playoffs start tonight! Angels and A\'s in what is basically a 3 game playoff to get into the real playoffs. I love the Angels chances. Vlad is on fire right now and our pitching seems to have settled. Go Angels!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Vlad deserves the MVP whether the Angels make it or not. There\'s nobody on the team that cancels out him like Ortiz does Ramirez and Rodriguez does Sheffield. Of course, the Mets didn\'t try to sign Vlad because of his "back problem," and we all know how that worked out.
I also picked the Cubs to win the World Series and we all know how that\'s working out.
For the record, the Angels take the series and the division. The Angels would be one of my two predicted preseason division winners to actually do so, along with the Bronxers.
No degree of predicition mediocrity can hold me down or make me stop typing. But the end of a work Friday can. See yous in October. Oh wait.
-
Vlad should win MVP his numbers for the Angels are pretty nice. 38 bangers working on an .340+ avg. and his defense is spot on. What an Arm! 4-0 Angels at the moment and looking for more.
-
Ladies and Gentlemen your AL WEST CHAMPION Anaheim Angels!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hell yeah 1st Division Championship since i was 16 and Boston broke my heart. Not this year Baby!!!!! Going for a 2nd title in 3 years. Who woulda thunk it?

Duane, what happened to the "No Gary Sheffield" vow?

2:20 AM, who else made it to the sweet end? Gotta be up in 3.5 hours...wheee!
2 points on the Yankees:
1. I never for one second thought the Yankees would lose that game. Ask Dobs. You just knew they were going to win, even down 1 going to the twelfth. There was no way Jeter was going to let them lose that game.
2. Strange as it is, I am rooting for the Yankees. If the Sox do this and don\'t play the Yankees, there\'s just something missing. Not to worry though, it\'s imminent. Yankees in 5 over Twinkies.
-
:sigh: :( Pls let there be no broom smilie created. One game leads to 2....
-
Did anybody watch the Yanks/Twins game about a bunch of Yankee fans? I understand that if the Yanks lose, they are basically out of it, but there was still way too much celebrating on my floor for tying the ALDS at 1-1. Frankly, it was something that we Red Sox fans would do.

While I had no problem with Joe Nathan starting the 12th inning, there\'s no way he should have been allowed to pitch to Rodriguez. Closers don\'t throw 50 pitches in a game after throwing the previous day. Series over. Excuse me while I throw up.

When the yankee fans began their ritual chant "1918! 1918! 1918!" to remind the Red Sox of their tragic history, O\'Nan had a comeback "2003! 2003! 2003!" He added, "It\'s nice to be in Yankee stadium, where so much Flordia Marlin history was made."

-
Actually I prefer Prognosticator Pitchie, but it\'s not like I can take any credit for predicting the Yanks and Sox to meet in the ALCS. It was one of the easiest preseason picks in the history of sports. Picking this series is somewhat of a challenge, but I stay with Yanks in 7 even though Boston has a better team on paper. We know that means shit.
-
Because Dave, that particular game would have been a crummy loss for them, what with losing a 5 run lead... my boys need momentum going into the series against the Yankees. If they had had to scrap their way through that series, I would have bigger worries than I do about the upcoming battle with the Yanks.
-
the tense is yet to come, my dear...
it\'s ON tomorrow night! :D

Yankees in 7:
Sox win games 1, 3, and 5. Yankees win 2, 4, 6, and 7. Yes, yes, it all makes sense. The devastation factor is all there: Sox never trail in series but can\'t get 2-game lead, blow 2 chances to clinch. Schilling wins 1 and 5, Wakefield wins 3, Pedro loses 2 and 6 and Arroyo gets shelled in 4. Kevin Brown throws 7 innings of 2-hit ball in game 7 to make the infamous "B" list. This I guarantee...the stars are aligned...
Other game 7 predictions: Sox break scoreless tie in top of ninth with run off Rivera, Yankees answer with 2 in bottom of ninth off Foulke: Jeter single, A-Rod homer.
Yankees in 6 over Cardinals.
-
I cannot believe it has taken this long for the "Killer B\'s " to win a postseason series.
They got a chance albeit a slim one if Pujols keeps his MVP caliber play up.
-
Since it\'s going to matter to either Red Sox or Yankees fans, it\'s worth mentioning that October 29th is currently scheduled as a World Series off-day between games 5 and 6 (if necessary, of course). Thus Fonghoulish Freakout VI will be completely free of "score updates" and relatively free of Yanks/Sox riots.
-
Well Bosox tried to rally but too little to late. No Schilling No Title. I HATE the yankees and the Bosox a little less but they sure play good games against each other.
-
Some questionable ball/strike calls against Boston (read: Sheffield in the 8th). Though you can\'t really chalk a loss up to bad calls when you give up 10 runs. I still have faith. After all, Boston won Game 1 last year, and we know how that turned out.
-
I would never mask my contempt for either of these two teams, but last night I found myself rooting for both. First, for Mussina to throw the no-hitter, then for the Red Sox to come back and win. It has nothing to do with choosing one team over the other. It\'s simply about cheering for the best baseball possible. Great game. Two tonight.

WHO\'S YOUR DADDY!!
Sorry, can\'t get it out of my head.
Us Card fans were ripped off BIG TIME last night with no broadcast here.
-
I thought the same thing, but found the Cards-Astros on NESN.
-
No such luck here. We used to have NESN and MSG. They took those away, shoved YES down our throats, and raised the rates.
Such a deal!
-
Right because Cheshire is much closer to New York City than Boston. That makes sense. UGH! Well, a win is a win is a win is a win is a win...
-
That pic is cool. Just as good was the Boston Globe\'s sports cover last year on the eve of the series: A hand-drawn Theo Epstein dressed as Luke Skywalker in a light-saber duel with Steinbrenner dressed as Vader. It was perfect. The light sabers even said "Louisville Slugger" on them if you looked close.

This series might be Episode III: Return of the Daddies.
-
go bosox!
-
i havn\'t seen this anywhere but....are the sox, or more accurately is francona going to be held accountable for using schilling in game 1 if he was hurt. were they "hoping" he would be ok and if so, is it negligent of him to not start his best available pitcher in game 1. whomever starts game 1 is most likely to pitch in more games for you, so it makes sense, if possible, to start your "ace" in game 1....which schilling clearly wasn\'t. this rain delay is going to make pedro available sooner but that\'s purely luck (or the curse sucking you back in) if they didn\'t know the extent of the injury then someone (schilling, the doctor,epstein....) was asleep at the wheel and if they did....pedro should have started.
-
mussina is not scheduled to pitch game four on normal rest cause torres trying to set up his rotation for the series with his ace being able to start game one......of course they have to win first but he would be negligent not to consider it
-
manny ramirez is a great hitter but he needs to review baseball 101
-
hitters in a slump, poor manager, pitchers hiding injuries.....and sit on their ass and stare at the game fans. fenway fans cheer when something happens....yankee fans try to help make it happen
-
This game is turning out like the rest of them very exciting, only thing is I think I seen the ending b4 and that does not bode well for the Bosox. Too Bad.
-
the question of the night......how many runs is enough?
-
hey ortiz....how about seeing the line drive go through.....its turning into a VERY poor fundamental series for the sox
-
It seems to me the Yankees are tryin\' to show all the people that have been prognosticating a Bosox birth in the Series this year that they need to stop smoking blunts b4 going on T.V. or writing an article. Playin\' the game w/ their bats as opposed to on paper the only place where the Bosox stack up to the Yankees in any era.
-
i see you baseball fans lurking out there
-
about time for a yankee to get hit by a pitch (not you chris)
-
Are you kidding me? I\'d love to hit a Yankee (preferably in the face with a Louisville Slugger).

grooved one for you, eh pitchie

gotta watch out for those rooting for the red sox mets fans....they\'re really frustrated

who would you pick chris?
-
I can\'t stand either team. Go National League! But I\'d prefer to see these idiots make a series of it. And they truly are idiots. Only an idiot talks about being better than a team they never beat prior to facing them. Actually, I\'m getting ahead of myself. They can still win the next four games. Heck, they can still win tonight. It\'s only 17-8. Cowboy Up!
-
love the billboard of manny saying "keep the faith". they spent the whole offseason trying to unload his mvp candidate ass.
-
To his credit, he didn\'t complain like Nomar. But it would have served them right for a team, perhaps a fellow contender, to have got him.
-
I agree screw both teams. The Cards are gonna crush either team.
-
i think manny doesn\'t complain cause he simply doesn\'t really care where he plays. he just likes to play and loves depositing those checks. i don\'t mean this as criticism....he\'s just different
-
Still hittin\' homers in the 9th. Yeah Boston has a chance riiiight.

Even the scorekeeper is over it. lol classic!

I don\'t believe in superstitions, so I\'ll say that the Red Sox have a shot. Curt Schilling is pitching in Game 6, and if they can pull that out, then it\'s just a best of 1.
Either way, I\'d hate to sound like too much of a dejected Sox fan, but they have showed more balls than I\'ve ever seen from a ball club. What that amounts to is up to you, of course.
Ortiz should change his name to George Steinbrenner, because he owns the Yankees.

Well, the plate and fork have been put aside for the plate of shit I\'ll eat should the Red Sox actually complete this comeback. All that stands between me and a whopping slice of dung is Curt Schilling and the unnamed Game 7 starter, probably Arroyo. Still, I don\'t care. These last two games have been classics and this series has a shot to be better than last season\'s. I\'ll stay with my preseason pick: Yanks 7. Go Stros!
-
Question: can any of you (Pitch) think of any postseason games that were as long as these last two? Wondering if any kind of record was made.
-
they had mentioned during the broadcast that the longest postseason game innings-wise was 16.. but time-wise, it was last night.. of course, only those of us who stayed up and watched the game saw this... :P
-
I did stay up last night. Sat in a cigar shop (gross) and watched the whole thing. Night before was a different story. I was disheartened and was pretty sure the outcome was going to be unpleasant. Plus, I had an upset stomach. So, shut up you!

Each of these last two games are the longest by minutes (5:02 Sunday and 5:49 yesterday) in postseason history. The longest game by innings in postseason history was when the Mets beat the Astros 7-6 in 16 innings in Game 6 of the 1986 NLCS. Oddly, that game was only 4:42.
Also the Game 3 debacle from Saturday was the longest nine-inning postseason game by minutes in history at (who knew?) 4:20.
-
Ok, haven\'t posted in quite some time, but I gotta say this is one hell of a series. I\'m a diehard sox fan, and if Schilling pitches good tonight, they will win the series. I know it\'s almost impossible to go into yankee stadium and beat the yanks two games in a row (with that rediculious lineup they have batting out of their asses this postseason), but the sox have all the momentium on their side. They have nothing to lose tonight, all the pressure is on the yankees (you could tell they knew that if you saw Jeter\'s face after that game last night). Just wanted to get that out their......GO SOX!!!
-
Francona says Wakefield is the favorite to start Game 7. Tough call. We\'ve seen him and Arroyo both look unhittable and both look terrible. Same with Lowe. First things first...

one of the more ludicrous posts yet. yeah that jeter.....he\'s all about feeling the pressure. been a choker his whole career. i think your mixing him up with that other shortstop you used to have. the one who turned down that 17 million a year that the sox offered just 6 months ago.(what were they thinking?)(what was he thinking?)
nothing to lose.....that town will crucify whomever causes them to lose. wakefield caught a break last year but let him give it up this year and see what happens. after coming back like they did (everyone....even yankee fans have been impressed by this) they have sucked you all back in yet again. maybe your right...if you
never win....you have nothing to lose ;)

Another wild and exciting night!
-
this is shit. i need SLEEP!!!!
tony clark at the plate for the last out of the game. yay. guy\'s been nothing but an automatic out since coming in for olerud. his one contribution meant nothing, because it bounced into the stands. i strongly believe that if olerud didn\'t get hurt, this series would be over.
yes, i\'m nervous.

tell me about it, barley got 2 hours sleep last night by the time the game ended. luckily the last couple games were on my weekend and I was actually able to stay up for them. looking forward to another nap this afternoon followed by another sleepless night...
I\'m not even close to the level fan that drew or dave are, but you can\'t help getting sucked into this series! (my job might have something to do with it also).
-
Oh Baby!
-
But seriously, a few thoughts...
Lowe on two days rest? What about Wakefield? He can be brutal, but is untouchable on his best day. I guess they don\'t want to start Mirabelli over Varitek to accomdate such, or don\'t want three passed balls an inning with Varitek in there. Still, Wakefield was great in Game 5 and has a rubber arm so rest is not a huge factor.
I originally thought Arroyo would be the starter, but the relief outings reduce him to a few innings tonight at best. They\'ll probably pitch all three at some point so it might not matter, but Lowe wasn\'t even going to start at all until Game 3 got rained out and now he\'s starting the pivotal game on half rest. It doesn\'t make sense. But then again, neither do many of Francona\'s moves and most work out.
I would not start Lowe under any circumstance tonight with his lifetime ERA versus the Yanks and his lack of rest. He\'ll probably try to go 5, then to Wakefield and/or Arroyo for a few, then the Embree/Timlin combo (which is finally rested), then Foulke (who is anything but rested). Lowe is a good pitcher to bring in when leading or trailing by a run or two and the pressure slightly lessened. But to start him off potentially at 0-0 with it all on the line: I don\'t agree. Out of the three pitchers in question, Arroyo has the best stuff and that\'s who I would go with even if he could only go a few. And if he couldn\'t go at all, I\'d start Wakefield and Mirabelli.
Also for the record, I think Kevin Brown is the right choice for the Yanks. He\'s hurt and he\'s emotional, but he\'s won a World Series and has pitched big games. Vazquez and El Duque waiting in the wings.
Also for the record, I think Tony Clark was the right choice. The only other option was Lofton and he likely wasn\'t going to win the game on one swing, which Clark could have (or he could have walked if he avoided Foulke\'s only successful pitch: the outside fastball).
Also for the record, I think Houston manager Phil Garner is making the right move by throwing Pete Munro and not Clemens on short rest. I\'m never a fan of throwing on short rest when leading in the series. This way, they either have Clemens-Oswalt for Games 1 and 2 of the World Series if they win today or have Clemens-Oswalt available for Game 7 if they lose.
Anyway, so what this all means is seven shutout innings from Lowe tonight, Brown gets bombed, Kenny Lofton hits for the cycle, and Munro tears his rotator cuff during pregame warmups. I got this shit down to a science and I be blinding y\'all with such.
The Payoff Pitch
Yanks 7, Red Sox 6

I keep hearing all this "when he\'s on he\'s on" and "he either can\'t throw or is untouchable." pfft, he\'s been throwing meatballs all year. I am uncomfortable every time he is on the mound. He\'ll blow it tonight.

So you say Arroyo or Lowe? Or Pedro on one days rest?

I definitely agree that the Red Sox pitching is the crucial variable for tonight.

Was that sarcastic? Don\'t question my fandom (that\'s not a word is it?) Pitch! I just don\'t like Wake this year. I know he csn throw a helluva knuckleball.... I just wish there was more consitency.
Pedro... heh, that\'s silly.
I think they probably shouldn\'t have used Arroyo as a relieving pitcher and he SHOULD have started tonight; he can throw a bit o\' heat.
D. Lo? I dunno what to think about him starting tonight. Guess we\'ll see.
So, anyhow, some other comments:
I really don\'t like the Grease Monkey. Send Bellhorn to the PawSox or unload him. Sheesh. HR or no HR last night, he\'s just not very good. Why does he seem to come up so often in the clutch and then blow it? ugh.
Also, I think that the Red Sox fans who are going nuts over Arod\'s interference last night need to chill out. Yes, he is a little bitch. However, get over it. It\'s intersting that that rule even exists... seeing as one can completely charge and trample the catcher when coming home. Can aanyone explain the technicalities of this to me?
Also, the 55,000 NY fans who started throwing things when the safe call was reversed.... come on! Even if he HADN\'T hit Arroyo\'s arm or glove or whatever, he still was quite obviously 2-3 feet to the right of the base when he was originally called safe. If some of those fans couldn\'t see that, they need to get their eyesight checked.
ALSO.... (sigh).... I just want to say that I am not impressed with the television coverage. Too many stupid cheesy little irrelevant clips stuck in. WAY too many replays. (Last night wasn\'t as bad however...) But seriously, I really think there should only be a replay if there was a close/questionable call (ball/strike or safe/out or whatever) or if some impressive or important play is made. For goodness sakes I don\'t need replays of balls throw as high as the batter\'s nose and 3 feet away from him, and I don\'t need a replay every time someone swings and misses. I dunno, maybe they\'re just trying to take up some time. or trying to drive home a "every pitch is crucial" kinda thing. But I think it\'s excessive. Also, I am really really really sick of stupid comments like "Extremely good pitching results in a low scoring game." Gee, thanks buddy. Hire Chris Pitch.
ok that\'s it.
-
Believe it not that was serious. Obviously, I understand why you might have mistaken it for sarcasm. I agree with your choice of Arroyo.
-
whatever happens.......i just hope it\'s a good game. i don\'t want to see either team up by 5 or 6 runs. it\'s too good of a series to be anticlimactic now. btw, i\'m not a fan of either team, but i don\'t have series tickets in fenway ;)
-
And this surprises me, but FANDOM is in fact a word. Just looked.

Glad someone else is watching the Senior circuit. This series has been just as exciting esp. when one hates the 2 AL teams playin\'. I wanted the Cards to win overall but those scrappy Astros would be fun to see in the Series for sure!
-
No question, a tremendous series and either team could beat the AL winner. Part of me wants Game 7 for the drama. The other part wants Clemens-Oswalt set up for Saturday and Sunday to give the NL a better shot. Either way, the Cards have left a lot of guys on base in this game.
To Richter\'s>Wooster I go...Hopefully, a raucous crowd

Shame about the NL game tonight... wanted Houston to end it tonight. Lidge had some fantastic pitching going for a while there.

What really got me w/ Shilling is that he was willing to have surgery during the playoffs! He had tissue surgically placed in between his weakened tendons in order to be able to even use his foot. That is fuckin\' dedication to your team!!

The more I learn about baseball the less I know. Good for both teams.

this is probably a pitch question:
breakfast play the freakout on friday 10/29... what are the chances of there being a world seires game that night?

Of course you always saw them like that. They\'re YOUR team.
As for a team not winning and fandom, Lady you\'re talking to a lifelong Angel fan.The difference is the Angels have never bitched and moaned abt losing to a team due to payroll.

I think it\'s more the fans than the players who bitch about payroll.

After all, the BoSox payroll ain\'t so bad.

Just thought it should be noted...
A girl was killed on Lansdowne St. last night during the riots by police officers trying to disperse the crowd. She was 21 years old, went to Emerson, and was a broadcast journalism major.... The riot police were firing some sort of "non-lethal" shots from air guns similar to paintball guns. many are complaining that the police started firing without warning and that the shots were unnecessary. I am not sure if they were out of line or not; I do know they had their hands full- cars being burnt, people being beat up, police getting attacked. People leaping off of the Green Monster. (idiots)... Anyhow, the girl was shot in the eye and later died as a result of her injury. Should have been a purely celebratory night....

Undeniable Proof That The Babe Is A Sox Fan
Explain if you can:
-In game 6, Posada crushes a ball to right, a sure upper-decker if there ever was one. Suddenly a gust of wind knocks it back into the park. Later in the game, Mark Bellhorn pokes a fly to left that carries all the way out. He didn’t hit the ball half as hard as Posada did. What hand reached out and carried Bellhorn’s ball over the fence?
-The Red Sox get two huge calls in game 6, while on the road, and both on reversals. Umpires never reverse calls. Granted both calls were correct, but to get both of them while in Yankee Stadium is a miracle. The Sox certainly didn’t get the calls in 1999.
-How do you explain the incredible resurrection of 3 dead Red Sox players? Curt Schilling was done; the doctors said if this were the season he would be having surgery immediately. He was never supposed to pitch again this season, then he comes back and pitches brilliantly on one foot. Mark Bellhorn doesn’t hit at all for 5 games, so bad that he gets demoted in the order. He then wins game 6 with a home run. Johnny Damon has the worst possible series. He can’t even bunt, much less hit. Then, out of the blue, he’s driving in 6 runs in game 7.
-At the same time, how do you explain 3 Yankees who absolutely could not miss at the plate in the first 3 games suddenly not being able to hit at all. Rodriguez, Sheffield, and Matsui went a combined 23/41 (.561) with 18 RBI’s in the first 3 games. In the last 4 games, they went 8/53 (.151) with 2 RBI’s. How can that happen?
-In game 4 at precisely midnight, Dave Roberts steals second base which leads to the series-saving run. The Red Sox have never, ever, stolen bases, especially in the clutch. When he stole this base, I inexplicably leapt off the couch and was exclaiming, “The curse is ending! The Red Sox just stole a base! The curse must be ending!” There are the Sox, down 3-0 in the series and 3 outs away from losing game 4, facing the greatest closer of all time, and there I am exclaiming that the curse is ending. That’s how I know the forces are strong within me right now.
-Cairo’s double in game 5 bounces over the short Fenway fence by an inch, preventing a huge run from scoring.
-Babe. Bucky. Buckner. Boone. Who lost game 7? Brown. Who won game 6? Bellhorn.
-The bottom of the ninth inning of game 7 started at exactly midnight.
-The score of game 3 was 19-8, which is but a mere syllable away from saying “1918.” Not a fluke.
Give the Red Sox all the credit in the world, and also give credit to the higher forces that were at play here. The fact is that Babe Ruth was watching and affecting this series, just as he has done with every Red Sox postseason series. The difference this year is that The Babe is now a Sox fan. You see, The Babe has a bit of an ego. He likes the fact that he is the ultimate trump and turned the tables forever. He is proud to be The Man The Yankees Stole From The Red Sox. But along came a man named Alex Rodriguez, who threatens Babe’s reputation as the ultimate Yankee steal from the Sox. This does not make the Babe happy at all, and he has switched sides. At the same time, he looks at the Red Sox and sees a lot of himself. These are a bunch of happy-go-lucky, partying guys, just as The Babe was. Especially Ortiz. Like Babe, Oritz is a big, huge-swatting, good-times guy. The Babe empowered Ortiz, just as he did Schilling, Bellhorn, and Damon. He knocked down a Yankee homerun, carried a Sox homerun, and made sure the Sox got the calls. He led the score of game 3 to indicate the year he last led the Sox to victory, and again manifested himself through players whose names start with B. Babe is still here, still watching, still playing, but he is back on the Red Sox.
The Red Sox go to the World Series with the home-field advantage because the American League won the All-Star game. They won thanks to Manny Ramirez hitting a 3-run home run off of losing pitcher Roger Clemens. Game 7 will be at Fenway Park on Halloween.

Heh, love the pre-printed ALCS champion stuff.... There is a lot of that kind of thing for the Sox for \'86 in one (of 3..) of the local bars. Not sure if it\'s funny or depressing.

As I took Owen (9-years old and fully brainwashed Cardinal fan) to school this morning, I told him how I was 9 (OK start the jokes) when the Cards played the Red Sox in 1967. How cool is that??
That season and World Series was when I became a Cardinal fan, and have stuck with them all the way.
This is going to be fun!!
See you tonight!

A few interesting tidbits:
1. The Red Sox have home-field advantage in the postseason because of the American League\'s victory in the All-Star Game. That\'s funny because the AL won that game as a result of Clemens allowing six runs in the first inning, including a two-run bomb to Manny. While that would have been even more interesting had the Astros made the World Series, it\'s still significant because of the Clemens-Red Sox relationship. Other notes about the All-Star Game: it was in Houston, Piazza was behind the plate for the first inning and there were grumblings at the time that he tipped pitches to get back at Clemens for the whole 2000 beaning fiasco, and Ortiz also homered in that game off of Carl Pavano, who used to wear a Red Sock, but was traded for none other than Pedro Martinez. Current mumblings have Pedro out of Boston after this year with the Sox making a hard push for Pavano, an emerging star and Connecticut native.
2. What are the Sox going to do with Ortiz when they play Games 3, 4, and 5 (if neccessary) in St. Louis? He\'s typically the DH. Obviously, he won\'t sit out those games. So I guess he goes to first, which used to be his position, but that\'s something that I haven\'t heard anybody discuss and I think it merits discussion. Can Ortiz handle the glove? Will Millar be pissed about sitting out? Maybe Manny should play first and Ortiz should play left. That\'s a joke. I think.
3. Actual serious prediction: Sox in 6, although I think starting Wakefield in Game 1 when both Martinez and Schilling would be on full rest, is mind-blowingly stupid. Of course, Francona has had the golden hand as of late and clearly outmanaged Torre in the ALCS so it\'s hard to criticize him. But I just don\'t understand the logic of not throwing your two aces when they\'re fully rested after you just threw your number-five guy on two-days rest in Lowe.
Either way, as long as it\'s an exciting series that makes fans of both teams squirm in their skin, I\'ll be a happy sonbitch.

Yes I was wondering the same thing about Ortiz and was planning on asking you what you thought would be the scenario.
-
There you go. I\'m one step ahead of you. Unfortunately, I\'m several thousand steps behind myself.
-
The deal is Ortiz will play first in St Louis. Sorry guys but it\'s time to play REAL baseball. Schilling will not pitch in St. Louis so he doesn\'t have to hit/run on that bad leg-a very wise move.
-
My Line-Up Projection
1. Johnny F\'n Damon - CF
2. Mark Bellhorn - 2B
3. Manny Ramirez - LF
4. David Ortiz - 1B
5. Trot Nixon - RF
6. Jason Vartiek - C
7. Bill Mueller - 3B
8. Orlando Cabrera - SS
9. pitcher
I really like the prospect of being able to use Millar as a pinch-hitter, pinch-run for him with Dave Roberts, and still have Doug MEN-KAY-VITCH to play 1B.
By the way, as unlikely as it is, I would love to see Mike Timlin bat. I cherish that guy and his ever-present big ol\' wad o\' chew.

Ortiz plays first, that\'s easy. You don\'t take a guy that hot out, he was the MVP of the frist two rounds. Millar understands, plus it gives us a bat on the bench. Ortiz has played first before.
Wakefield starting is fine. Schilling has to go 2-6 because he can\'t hit in the NL park, so now your Game 1 guy is either Pedro or Wake. If Pedro goes 3 then he also presumably goes 7, which means that when the Sox come back to Fenway for 6 and 7 they\'ll have Schilling and Pedro, which makes them a favorite whether they are up 3-2 or down 3-2. Next reason: Pedro isn\'t quite on full rest due to his remarkable relief stint in game 7. Next reason: Wakefield hasn\'t started a game yet this postseason. He is the longest-running Red Sox and didn\'t get the call to start game 7 even though he could have gone. Francona owes him this one. You might argue that Francona is again managing to one player\'s story instead of the team\'s needs, but in actuality the entire team is fully behind Wake getting a start because they know what he means to the franchise, so it will get all of them fired up. Overall it is a very good move.
-
No thanks to Wakefield, no thanks to Manny (who simply has to be a DH next year), no thanks to home plate umpire Ed Montague (whose called third strike of Edmonds in the eighth was one of the worst calls in postseason history). But the Sox are the better team and that was reflected in the final score. Get the champagne on ice. This series is over.

Now, formulaically, things are going according to plan. The theory behind homefield advantage is to take the first two at home, one of the next three on the road, and then one more at home. Of course, we\'ve already seen that work not so well this postseason. Pedro Power it is.

Evelyn and I were in attendance at Busch Stadium when Joaquin Andujar hit a grand slam! What a fun player he was!
And what is the greatest Andujar quote you might ask? It goes something like this:
"You have to drink beer while you are here on earth, because you don\'t know, there might not be any beer in heaven"
-
You know it\'s not your Series when you let Pedro battle back from an 0-2 count and force a walk. And an all-time showing on the mound too. And he has as many hits as Rolen does for the Series.
Congratulations to the Boston Red Sox for winning the 2004 World Series, marking their first Major League Baseball Championship since 1918 and their sixth overall. They were the best team and proved it.

the chorus:
in heaven, there is no beer.
thats why we drink it here.
and when we\'re gone from here,

all the trash talk aside.......they left know questions or doubts about who the best team is this year.....history will never be quite the same .....they didnt benefit from one super lucky bounce or call....they took on the best teams in baseball and won eight straight games....foulke was better than i thought i he could be.....congrats sox fans and have fun.....you deserve it!

I still can\'t believe they won. I suppose I will attend the victory parade outside my building on Friday.

This is for all the people who have spent their lives hoping for a miracle, knowing that all the pain would pay off in the greatest victory of them all. This is for the former Red Sox who have had their very souls chained to poles of inferiority despite their years of efforts. This is for all the friends who spent this night together. I drove up to Boston for the game and it was unbelievable, I\'m so glad I spent it with my friends up there. This is for all the people who sold out every game at Fenway Park this year for the first season ever. This is for all the people who endured the wait but didn\'t quite make it to this point, including my dad and his dad, who together brought me to my first baseball game at Fenway Park in 1986. This is for all the families and friends who have attended games together over the years, and called each other if for no other reason than to talk about the local 9. On that note this goes out to my mom, who had never watched a baseball game in her life before I turned her into a Red Sox fan by bringing her to the Patriot\'s Day game 6 years in a row when I was a kid. We went to the game this year on Mother\'s Day.
Given everything that happened this year both on the field and in my life, I have to say to all Yankee fans, thanks for being our enemy. Great rivalries make for great winners. I love Yankee fans and put up with a lot of their stuff this year while living in Manhattan. We are less without you, you are less without us. The Yankees will always be the greatest sports franchise ever, but Yankee fans will never know what this is like, no matter how many times they win. See you on opening day!
I\'ve talked to and seen so many people in the last week who I don\'t always get to talk to, and it all revolves around this. The Boston Red Sox, a group that not only plays baseball, but is a cornerstone of the social framework that is being a Bostonian. Thank you to the team for providing us with this experience, and to all the people in my life and in Boston last night who make the experience what it truly is.
-
But seriously...
As I stated on this forum following last year\'s postseason, the only curse is having inferior pitching. The Red Sox not only had superior pitching to St. Louis, which made up for the defensive gaffes the first two games, they made the Cardinals once-mighty bats look meager.
I was wrong. The Nomar trade worked. The Red Sox were the best team in baseball this year and proved it beyond a doubt. They deserved it and earned it and accomplished two things as remarkable as the title itself (beating the Yankees four straight and winning eight straight postseason games). The Red Sox are not a floundering franchise. They are World Champions.
Just remember, if you\'re a Sox fan and didn\'t believe in the deep recesses of your heart that they could win the World Series the entire time, including down 3-0 to the Yankees, then you\'re not a true fan and should feel no absolutely no validation in their subsequent championship. If you know for a fact that you believed the Sox could come back, then Congratulations for enduring and suffering and believing.

Pitch, you\'re a great sports fan, but you don\'t know what it is to be a Red Sox fan. You can\'t. You\'re not one. You couldn\'t tell anyone what it is to be female or African-American either. What you just said is the most utterly erroneous comment I\'ve ever heard from you. Let me explain it to you once, and then don\'t go telling anyone what it is to be a Sox fan ever again, and you certainly won\'t find me telling anyone how to be a Mets fan.
You don\'t have to be some psychotic yahoo who sat there after game 3 against the Yankees saying "Oh, we\'re definitely going to win it all now" to be a Red Sox fan. That would mean there are about 3 Red Sox fans in the world. Do you really think there are only 3 Red Sox fans in the world? I guess there are no fans of the 1980 Olympic hockey team either. Being a Sox fan is about waiting for the moment when they finally shocked you and pulled it out. It\'s about expecting to fail, knowing that doom was always around the corner and expecting it, but hoping that somehow it would be vanquished to your great surprise. Nobody I know believed that they could win after game 3, and I know plenty of the greatest Sox fans in the world. Telling everyone out there that they are not a Sox fan because they did not expect the team to emerge from the most hopeless situation they have never been faced with completely compromises your integrity as a sports expert. A true fan watched game 3, and all of games 4 and 5 deep into the night, and game 6 and 7 in New York, facing yet another devastating heartbreak at any moment, but watching nonetheless. It doesn\'t matter what they thought, it matters that they were there.

As sad as it was to watch a truly great team look like nothing the past 4 games, the following really sums up what the Cardinals are all about. I don\'t think there is anything out there that matches this sentiment.
I don\'t know about you, but I saw nothing but $$$ in Pedro\'s eyes last night. Bye Bye.

:point:
-
There\'s no questioning the dedication of Cardinals fans. Who else would cheer Rick Ankiel after that five-wild-pitch performance against the Mets in Game 2 of the 2000 NCLS? The Cardinals actually came back to tie that game before the Mets won in extra innings. So today is obviously a bitter pill for followers of the Redbirds, but you have to appreciate any owner who builds the ballpark with their own $$$.
But I guess, based on my previous posts today, that you\'re not a true Cardinals fan if you didn\'t think they could come back and win, even as late as when Foulke fielded Renteria\'s grounder.
Hey, if you\'re gonna be an asshole, be a consistent one.

Since I am not quite the baseball fan that most Boston people are, I can be objective and say that Pedro does only care about money. He was the one complaining about being underpaid last spring. Shut up and throw boy. $20 million or whatever he is making seems good enough. Curt Schilling makes much less from what I remember. He has a better attitude and threw better.

Nah I don\'t think so. Everyone\'s going crazy after what he said after Game 3 about potentially leaving Boston. "I can\'t believe he was talking about that!" .... Well, the REPORTERS brought it up. Which I think was inappropriate timing.
Watching Pedro last night put a smile on my face. Haven\'t seen him smile like that in a while. He was jumping around, grinning, pumping his fists all the way through the game. If that was all because he was excited by the propspect of big(ger) bucks next year, well, then he is a fabulous actor.

yikes....
Filed- Varitek, Lowe, Kapler, Mirabelli, McCarty, Pokey Reese, Mike Myers, Scott Williamson, Ramiro Mendoza, Curtis Leskanic, Cabrera, Astacio, Terry Adams.
Haven\'t filed yet, but eligible and likely- Pedro. Also Gutierrez, if anyone cares.
-
Leskanic\'s option was declined...can\'t say I blame them since he\'s not any good. Still, he was the unsung hero of Game 4, getting out of an extra-inning jam when the Yankees were still in control of the series.
All in all, it\'s a good move.
Other than that I say,
KEEP: Varitek, Lowe, Mirabelli, Reese, Williamson, Mendoza, Cabrera
DUMP: Kapler, McCarty, Myers, Astacio, Adams, Gutierrez
Almost seems obvious who to keep and dump, but I figured fuck it, it\'s Hot Stove Season, proof that baseball never ends.

Agreed, although think maybe keep Kapler.
Some funny Kerry-isms about the Red Sox (I think his PR people need to give break down the basics for him), this comes from "Football Fans for Truth":
"Kerry told a radio interviewer that his favorite Red Sox player was Eddie Yost. Eddie Yost never played for the Sox."
"Kerry once praised \'Manny Ortez\' of the Red Sox. There\'s no Manny Ortez on the Sox lineup or indeed, any other MLB roster. Manny Ramirez and David Ortiz play for the Red Sox. Maybe all baseball players\' names sound alike to the facist nominee."
"When Kerry threw the first pitch at a Red Sox-Yankees game, he did not throw from the pitcher\'s mound yet still bounced the ball before it reached home plate. He then blamed his namby-pamby throw on the catcher, a National Guard soldier and Iraq war veteran: \'I held back,\' Kerry told reporters. \'He was very nervous. I tried to lob it gently.\' Conclusion: John Kerry throws a baseball worse than a girl."

Absolutely not. I\'d like to see how the Mets would justify not signing Guerrero last offseason, who is in the midst of his prime, and go for Martinez, who is just past it.
-
Although I have an obvious weird feeling about it, the Mets decision to name Willie Randolph as their manager has my full endorsement
-
Pitch, I am torn by this move. IMHO, just another bonehead decision on the part of the Mets front office..... Why bring a Yankee legend into Queens? It is the worst idea since thinking that John Franco was still a quality reliever enough to ever bring him to the team....
-
Franco is clearly the worst pitcher in baseball history, but Randolph has won more than any other person in the Mets organization. And the list of candidates was slim. I might have gone Bob Brenley or Jim Leyland, but they seem to be unavailable across the board and it looks like no team will go with them. Look at it this way: the Phillies just hired Jerry Manuel to be their manager. Who\'s he? Exactly. I\'ll judge Randolph based on his on-field moves and strategy once the 05\' season starts.
But I understand your dislike considering the fact that Randolph was part of numerous Yankees championship teams, including one that celebrated their title at Shea in 2000. And Randolph also batted .252 in his final season in the majors for the \'92 Mets, the worst team money could buy. Mike and Mad Dog, or as Imus used to call them, Fatso and Fruit Loops, are attempting a slaughter of Mets general manager Omar Minaya on the Fan right now.
-
those douchebags love to kill the Mets......
I just dont like it....
Big Stein loves to take former Met legends and make them Yankees. That is his thing. We just look like a wannabe yankee team... (the mets will be turning on their own TV station ala Yes in 2006. I believe it will be called the SUCK network).....
-
Minaya said that Leyland wasn\'t interested in offseason scouting trips to the Caribbean and such, which Randolph is, and that Brenley called about the job, but wasn\'t interviewed. So I say definitely no Leyland and feel that Brenley deserved an interview considering he\'s won a title with Arizona and the fact that Minaya only interviewed three: Randolph, Rangers hitting coach Rudy Jaramillo, and twice-fired former Astros and Angels manager Terry Collins. Still, overall, I support the move. Success breeds success. Now sign a marquee free-agent pitcher and hitter and steal the division.

BY T.J. QUINN
DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER
KEY BISCAYNE, Fla. - Despite his declining production and plummeting public image, Sammy Sosa still has fans in Flushing.
Mets GM Omar Minaya is exploring ways to bring the embattled Cubs slugger to New York, several major league sources said yesterday, and his arrival in New York would likely mean the departure of franchise face Mike Piazza and outfielder Cliff Floyd.
Sources said Minaya will not proceed unless he is confident that Sosa will be healthy.
But the groundwork may have moved ahead at the GM meetings last night when Mets assistant GM Jim Duquette met with Cubs GM Jim Hendry and Sosa agent Adam Katz at a bar at the Ritz-Carlton.
The idea of bringing Sosa to Shea has received mixed reviews in the Mets\' front office. Sosa, who turns 36 tomorrow, appears to be nearing the end of his career and has had a prickly relationship with his managers, teammates and reporters.
Clearing room on the payroll will not be easy. Piazza, whose OPS (on-base plus slugging percentages) has fallen from .957 to .806 over the last four seasons, would probably end up with an AL club for which he could spend time as a designated hitter. Several major league sources denied rumors that the Dodgers are interested in trading Shawn Green for Piazza, who cannot be traded without his permission.
The trouble would be money. Any other team would owe Sosa $35 million over two seasons, and then face another option year in 2007 with a $3.5 million buyout. On the Mets\' side of the equation, Piazza is due $15.5 million next season, and Floyd is owed $13 million over the next two.
Sosa, whose physique shrunk noticeably last season, finished a third straight year in his own OPS decline, going from .993 to .849. He played only 126 games last season after hurting his back with a particularly potent sneeze.
Sosa exhausted his goodwill with the Cubs on the last day of the season, after a tense club lost eight of nine games and fell from playoff contention. He arrived shortly before the game began, failed to dress and left during the first inning.
After he told a reporter he left during the seventh inning, the team announced that security cameras recorded him leaving the parking lot in the first. More than the revelation of when Sosa departed, the announcement was notable because the club publicly embarrassed its marquee player.
-
I\'m sure most of you don\'t care (except for Breakfast youngster Drew and Jocelyn) that Bronson Arroyo was at the mall down the street from my house signing autographs last night.
-
Hm. Was the place mobbed? There is a little sports store down the road from my new apartment where they have the players in all of the time. Johnny Damon was there the other day, and it was insane... the whole street filled with people all clamoring to pay 70 bucks for a signed photograph, more if you bring in an item of your own to get signed. (No thanks!) They had to call in 4 police officers because the crowd was getting rowdy due to a general panic that they might not all get to meet him. (Keep in mind, 4 police officers involved in anything other than road paving is a big deal where I live.)

How about those Red Sox. What a team. Hey all non-Sox fans, don\'t you just wish you were a Sox fan? What a team.

I would never trust David Wells in a big spot again after Game 5 of the 2003 World Series. Plus, a lefty in Fenway? I\'d rather have Lowe, let alone Martinez.

I don\'t think I\'ve been right since 1918, but I\'ll enjoy watching Wells if he gets blown up, even if it\'s by the Yankees

METS TURN DOWN RED SOX OFFER OF MANNY FOR FLOYD
By Adam Rubin
New York Daily News
For most of the winter, the Mets have been chasing Boston ace Pedro Martinez. Last night, the Red Sox\'s other big star practically fell in their lap, but they weren\'t interested.
Boston, wanting to free up money to sign Edgar Renteria and Carlos Delgado, offered World Series MVP Manny Ramirez to the Mets for Cliff Floyd. They were rebuffed, and a Mets insider said the deal is highly unlikely to be revisited, because of the salary owed to Ramirez.
A Met insider said in addition to Ramirez\'s hefty contract - which has four years and $77 million left on it - there are other factors that would make them reluctant to bring Manny to Shea. Floyd, who has $13 million coming to him over the next two seasons, is someone the Mets are looking to deal, but not at that cost. Mike Piazza was also included in the dialogue between the Mets and Red Sox, but that went nowhere.
And while it looks like Martinez could be heading back to Boston, they have a backup plan in Dodger pitcher Odalis Perez. GM Omar Minaya said he has offers out to two starting pitchers, and a Mets insider said Perez was the other recipient of a bid in addition to Pedro.
Martinez continues to seem a near-lock to return to the Red Sox, though Minaya reiterated yesterday: "The fact we\'re in dialogue means we\'re still alive."

Pedro Martinez is a Met?
Fucking Wonderful....
Thoughts Pitchy????

Pedro Martinez = Met
On one hand, a four year deal is a bit long for a 33 year old with a rotator cuff thinner than pre-steroids Jason Giambi...
But on the other hand, if the Mets were thinking about the 2008 season right now, they wouldn\'t have signed Pedro at all.
I guess I\'m not happy that he is no longer a Red Sox, but I\'m pleased that we didn\'t offer a deal that we shouldn\'t have offered just to keep him.
Now that I\'ve said my piece, RANT ON Pitch!

I originally was not in favor of this move considering the fact that I\'ve always hated Martinez\'s guts. But the bottom line is that he\'s immediately the Mets ace once he signs on the dotted line. They have to replace Leiter and this obviously does more than that. They still should have signed Leiter and dumped Glavine, but overall, this is a good signing. I still hope somebody beans Pedro just so he gets a taste of his medicine. Then I hopes he beans the best player on the team that beans him. If you\'re gonna have Pedro, better use him for what he\'s best at: INTIMIDATION. And now that he has a World Series ring, I have a fair amount of confidence of him in the big spot. So good job Mets, finally. They still have to push hard for a slugging outfielder or first baseman, work on trading Floyd and Piazza, and solidify their bullpen. They may be a playoff contender next year, but I\'ve been down this road before and won\'t make any statements until I see the roster on April 1.
As far as the Sox role in the move, they had better pursue some legitimate righty to offset this, or else it\'s one of the worst moves, both from a strategic and public relations standpoint, in the history of sports. But then again, I thought the same about the Nomar trade, so who knows? Still though, you have to smile if you\'re a Mets fan today and cringe a bit if you\'re a Sox fan. Maybe Pedro will smoke bowls with his little buddy in the top hat at Shea.

Speaking of the Cardinals, they lost the World Series to the World Champion Boston Red Sox.

Let\'s see. You win a title with Orlando Cabrera as one of your best hitters. Then you refuse to sign Cabrera and sign another shortstop, who was on the team you beat in the World Series. Hey, what\'s another 86 years between championships?
RENTERIA AGREES TO FOUR-YEAR DEAL WITH CHAMPS
BOSTON -- All-Star shortstop Edgar Renteria told The Boston Globe he has agreed to a $40 million, four-year contract with the Red Sox, the paper reported on its Web site Wednesday.
Renteria, who played for St. Louis for the past six years, made the final out in Boston\'s World Series sweep of the Cardinals. He has a .289 career average and is a four-time All-Star and two-time Gold Glove winner.
Reached by the paper at his home in Colombia, Renteria said the World Series champions made the best offer.
"I like to play on a winning team like Boston, St. Louis or any team that has the opportunity to win,\'\' he was quoted as saying. His decision came down to the two pennant winners, and he said the Red Sox were "more interested in my playing for them.\'\'
Renteria replaces fellow Colombian Orlando Cabrera, who was acquired in a late-season trade and played a key role in Boston\'s championship run.
His contract also includes an option for 2009.
