I had a conversation about ellis\' style with leith a few weeks ago. Personally, I didn\'t care for his lighting for the breakfast. Sure it was better than nothing or a novice jumping in and just playing, and I\'m not saying it doesn\'t work in the right setting, it\'s just that (for me) the breakfast was not it. musically it worked. The problem was the venues. You can see Ellis\' influences from ck5 in his show the same way you can hear a musicians influence in their playing but the rooms were WAY TOO SMALL for what he was trying to do. IMO, for what ellis does with his style, he needs a much bigger stage and lighting grid, something which at the time the breakfast simply couldn\'t deliver him. In a nice sized theater though with more than 3 intelli and a couple of cans I think he definietly has the potential to put on an awesome show so this is a much needed step in the right direction for him. You don\'t want to see a guitarist playing in a hole in the wall pull out 8 marshal stacks, you don\'t want to see ellis having to cram what he\'s trying to do into that size room either. For the lights to have their full effect you need room for the beams to spread out more than 50 feet wall to wall.

Also, sd video looks like garbage with the amount of darkness he uses. If we had hd, it would look great but we can\'t adjust iris levels with our current gear, so most bfast shows I was cursing ellis under my breath.

Best of luck man. I\'d love to see what you could pull off with the right sized room.

I loved all his work.

I thought it went well with the whole feel that he, and the breakfast, should definitely be playing in bigger places than red square.

his lights used to look amazing at red square, b/c the stage is so deep...i always thought RS showcased his lights better than other small venues

Post by: ellis-d on June 24, 2009, 03:50:50 pm
I totally agree, red square was one of my favorites. I understand where some people are coming from as far as it being "too much" at times. But lets think about this in context. Isnt the breakfast a bit over the top? Its not exactly chill music, so my part in the equation as i saw it was to equal their intensity and their ability to blow peoples minds. If i went about it any other way, and i could have, i never would have been satisfied. It is a shame that the opportunities to truly exhibit my mental picture of what it should be like were few and far between. But such is life. Thanks for all the support guys. Hope to see some of yall in the mountains sooner than later

Red square was a bad example.

...Mill Street Brews?
...Sullys?

I liked his lights at wheel house.

i never once said to myself during a show that i thought ellis\'s lights were too much...all positive IMO

I don\'t want to see anyone pull out 8 Marshall stacks.

I see what you are saying though. I wouldn\'t say Ellis\' potential was wasted on The Breakfast... but it takes a true Breakfast fan to be able to predict their changes on the money and evolve the feeling with/of the jams. If the guy can jam lights to Breakfast what can\'t he do?

Love to see you playin\' with a big rig some time bro... unfortunately I don\'t get out to western America pretty much ever. :(

i would like to think my potential was created by TB. The absolute artistic freedom they granted me allowed me to experiment with all the crazy ideas that run through my mind. Not to mention the fact the difficulty factor of their music is at a 10 so everything else is cakewalk in comparison. I owe them a huge debt of gratitude for allowing me to do my thing. I listen to them now more than ever, so when i make my way back to the east coast you can bet your ass i wont miss a beat when i get the chance to shine some lights for you guys again.

Bah! No one ever went to a Breakfast show for the lighting.

I enjoy being able to SEE the guys while they play.

I do however enjoy Ellis\' work when he has the tools and room to actually bring his vision to the fore.

HSMF Late Night should be a trip and half with that kid on lights. I\'m already telling friends going to check out the Hall.

One of the marks of a great touring lighting designer/director is the ability to walk into any situation and make the show look good.

I have seen far better done with far less. Sometimes I get nostalgic for the simple beauty and sincerity of a show lit by Wolfman.

Part of the beauty is those buttons do whatever you want them to do. Or at least whatever you can program them to do. That board is just a midi interface. You combine it with a laptop and a midi to dmx converter and you are good to go. VJs and digital disk jockeys use these a lot and this board is optimized for them. That is why you see the A/B crossfader at the bottom.

The Boy Wonder is now a Man. Finally got himself on a Tour Bus which he\'s pretty stoked about.

He is also now calling himself a Visual Conceptualist.

Now that he\'s in the real world he\'s doing just fine.
He\'s learning a lot and that is great.
He does still run some uplighting and whatever conventionals when he feels it but the movers are another guy.
Really good to see Upstate doing so well. He\'s come a long way and if we get the chance again to have him run Breakfast lights it will be unlike anything we\'ve seen before.

Had a blast at the show and danced my ass off. I didn\'t think I would be down at all from what I heard prior but Pretty Lights isn\'t just whomp whomp. It boogies.

Anyone doing Pretty Lights tomorrow in NY or Saturday in Boston. I will be attending both. Mamalakabubadaya and I are heading down from Stamford sometime around 6 -ish. I am solo heading to Boston. If anyone is in the Boston area and wants to hang during the day/night let me know.

Can\'t wait to see Mr. Ellis and his LED. Hopefully he can blind people now. I bet PL fans don\'t bitch about his lights being too bright. Jerks.

Doesn\'t mean that I won\'t break both his hands before a PL tour though. That I can not promise.

Well, Wah, I have to go break Ellis\'s hands if he doesn\'t have his delinquent Bobble money. Apparently he did not get the memo that the Bobble Mafia doesn\'t fuck around with payments.

Its going to fuck up the rest of the PL tour. Hope he has the money.

Arrived at Red Rocks this morning around 8 a.m. to a herd of exercisers running up the stairs and stuff.

Down below on stage a crew was building the light rig for tonight\'s Pretty Lights show.

The Carpenter is going to have a lot of lights to play with tonight in a ser venue. Rig will be comparable to a CK5 set up from years past plus LED screens. Should be a great evening.

Well, I am heading out to Colorado Thursday to finish up Pretty Lights tour with Greg Ellis and Josh Dobson. All they need is Stephengencs or Gaboo and PL will have the Breakfast road crew working for them. Personally applying for Head Flashlight guy.

Anyways, doing the last 3 shows of the tour. Heading back to Telluride for Friday and Saturday then going to Aspen for the last show of the tour. Should be a raging good time especially since these guys are rock and roll status now.

Telluride Conference Center. About the size of a boardroom for CEO\'s. This place is even more beautiful with the snow, in all its glory.

I saw PL at the Syracuse War Memorial Auditorium last night and it was freakin sick!

I had listened to him on mp3 and saw one show (phish after party) previously and thought it was okay but last night totally changed my mind!

It was a hell of a party and super fun to get down to. Lights were amazing. Music was really good. Nothing but positive things to say. Can\'t wait for the next show!

I like a lot of PL music but that Time remix is a pretty lame and uncreative rendition of a classic song.

Was told that it was an all night rager set. Heard nothing but good things about it from the boys this past weekend down in MPP.

Heading to Governors Island on Saturday to see PL throw it down. Hopefully Ellis has more deer blinders for those w0oks eyes.

sweet video. shot of phil after the show is hilarious. Thier tour schedule this summer is insane I wouldn\'t be surprised if they blow up bigger than Phish pretty soon.  Their potential audience world wide is huge and it seems they are developing their own very dedicated fanbase!

I agree. This trip overseas next week is going to be huge for them. Have heard nothing but great rumors for the fall as well.

I started off a skeptic until I learned exactly what was going down. Many shows and many miles later, I am hooked on the PL thing. Think he is a genius and puts on one hell of a live show. Ellis\' lights don\'t hurt either.

Everything is going the way it should be.

ALso should be noted that Audiophile on this board aka Josh Dobson is doing monitors for Pretty Lights. He use to do sound for this band The Breakfast. Funny how PL has 2 of the Breakfast crew on board now.

not funny at all these kids know their shit now and they did when they were with TB.  pretty lights is getting almost frighteningly huge and I could not be happier for Greg Ellis, he has worked so hard and got dealt the card of his life with this ogranization.  PL has the best stuff and really no other producer and compare with his mashes/ music knowledge (serious bass player).  so pumped for ellis cant wait so see what happens with them
