Title: Hockey?
Post by: SkyePrizm on October 18, 2006, 04:58:32 pm
How come nobody talks about the NHL here?!   I feel like the lone lover of ice.  I went to my first NHL game on Monday at MSG.   Rangers vs. Devils.    Awesome rivalry.  I\'m glad that was my first introduction to live hockey.

hiya skye

what a great game that was on monday!  at least you got to see the rangers (finally) playing well and lundquist (finally) made some awesome saves :banllama:

i\'ve been a huge rangers fan for years and years.  rarely miss a game and will even tape them if i\'m not around to watch.  they\'ve had quite a few heartbreaking season but i really think they have a solid team this year, especially with the addition of shannahan (w00t!).

i have to admit though, i did boycott the 2001 season after they traded my all time favorite player, adam graves :sadban: .  caught as many san jose games as possible that year.

seeing the rangers at msg is an amazing thing.  just make sure that you don\'t get so drunk up in the nose bleed section that you fall down those damn steep stairs, it hurts :(

gearing up to watch the game tonight, got a new castle in hand!  let\'s go rangers!!!

^^^^^^^

As you can see from the above Hockey is just about the only sport we both really like. Which is weird considering I never actually played organized Hockey.

I am a Bruins fan that has been living in the NY metro area for a long time :(

We do watch all the ranger games. It is no to bad most of the guys who made me hate the rangers haven\'t played for them in years.

I too have been surprised by no NHL talk on this board. It seems just about every other major sport is represented.

Congrats on your first live hockey game. It is always fun to go to a game. MSG is a pretyy good place to see hockey. They dony have too many seats that are really horrible.

I think its totally unavoidable to NOT get drunk at a hockey game!  :)   I love that guy who dances in the middle of the game in the nosebleed section.

(Before i forget: Note:  don\'t go to the ESPNZone in Times Square at 5 pm when your game time is at 7.....slow service!!!! Thats when they do their "shift changes".)

I am so glad I have a fellow Rangers fan and hockey fans here in the forum!  I\'ve only truly gotten into hockey in the last two years.  (A bunch of my guy friends play roller hockey on a team.) I think hockey fans are some of the craziest, most loyal, true fans out there.   I have this one friend who moved to DC but still tries to organize a Whalers comeback.

Lundquist did have an AWESOME game.  The team was playing their A-game for sure.  My friends saw the game against the penquins and said it was a big improvement in just a few days.  Alot of ballsy Devils fans in the audience tho.   Two kids in the hallway area got into a fight (one Devils, one Rangers fan)

I actually kinda like hockey. At least as far as getting me to watch sports goes. I never did growing up, so I\'ve never been to an NHL game, but I used to work camera down in new haven. The scores are low like soccer and you get all that build up and relief when there are goals, but it\'s really fast paced game like basektball with the fast breaks, so it keeps you interested. I love it when someone is in the penalty box and you have an odd # of people playing. It\'s interesting to see how the other team takes advantage of it, or at least attempts to.

its all up to the refs sometimes.  if they keep calling penalties...it could make or break a team.  the rangers had a few against them on monday\'s game, but the devils couldnt accomplish much.  i love the roughness and excitement that insues with fights on the ice.  i am hoping one day to see a bench clearing live!

Camera work down in new haven?   **sigh***  Damn Coliseum being torn down!!!!   R.I.P. New Haven Nighthawks!    I lived downtown for a full year (just moved out).  My parking garage was directly across from whats left of the old place.   =(

To me, hockey is the most exciting sport to watch in North America.  Had season tickets for the Blackhawks out here in Chicago for 5 years and had a blast.  Still watch on TV and am in a fantasy league.  Nice to hear others on the site are into it also.  Thanks to SkyePrism for starting the thread.

Rangers hockey, now you\'re talkin my language!

Unfortunately, Devils\'s game aside, this doesn\'t look like the same team as last year so far. Shanahan is the only player who looks consistently great, the effort level isn\'t there for everyone else. Lundqvist was great in the Devil\'s game but overall has been average, Jagr obviously isn\'t 100%, powerplay isn\'t clicking, defense is really suspect (especially Malik and Tyutin, who I had high hopes for but looks like the next Malakhov), and the only other player giving 100% every night is Jason Ward. If Lundqvist can find his game, play solid TEAM defense, and put a whole games worth of effort in, they have the talent to be just fine.

I wish I was a Buffalo fan right now, that team is scary.

I want to check out some Hartford Wolfpack games this year, partially to see the Rangers young talent but also to spite Whaler fans :D (Get over over it guys, they aint comin back) The Pack will be a fun team to see, it\'s kinda weird to know that I\'m older almost all of them.

It always seemed silly to me to play hockey in places where there is plenty of dry land and soccer could be played instead...

Imagine if they started having martial arts tournaments in between the periods in soccer. Hockey would be obselete!

The rangers were f-ing terrible last night. I basically stopped watching in the 3rd period and seeded that bfast show.

They seem to be the exact same shitty team that ended last season (I thought they played really well begining of last year). No one shots the puck except for shanahan (man is he good. his caliber of play is so much higher than anyone on the team including jagr) they always hold on to the puck to long and Nielander needs someone to knock him on his ass next time he tries to skate around and around with the puck.

Defense has been a joke. I actually thought Weeks played better than lundquist has all season when they lost to Buffalo. He at least made some really big saves (the score would have been way worse) but that was before the Devils game. He palyed pretty good against the devils but man the rangers are really playing bad hockey. hope they can turn it around or it will be a long season to watch

Soccer ? even less people watch soccer in the US then Hockey.

Soccer is pretty much teh ghey. I watch the World Cup and that is supposed to be the best of the best and the sport is just lame. A bunch of whiney flamboyant "guys" diving at every chance and complaining to the refs. And dont get me started on the rules. Overtime is not sudden death (you just watched 90mins of tied soccer and they let the other team have a chance to come back WTF is that ?) and if no one wins in the allotted time. They play an entirely different game to determine a winner (like Hockey does now in the regular season which is so f-ing LAME) Penalty Kicks. Thats like watching the NBA and if it is tied after overtime they say screw it and play horse

Yeah, there is no comparison between hockey and soccer.  I cannot watch soccer on TV, but flip on any hockey game....i\'ll watch it.  Come on, I even sit through my friends\' roller hockey games...and trust me, they can get pretty BAD.  IF anyone is looking for a fun hobby, teams are getting together already for the spring at The Rinks in Shelton, CT.

Ya, last night kinda sucked but I don\'t think it was that bad. Vokoun was great, he stopped 38 f\'n shots, if they can keep that up, they\'ll win more than they lose. The problems were the same I mentioned before: powerplay sucks (3 5-on-3\'s and no goals, c\'mon guys, move around a little!), defense was slow but wasn\'t getting much help from the forwards, and Lundqvist was average. The part of the game I really didn\'t like was the thrid period coaching. The 4th line of Dawes-Ward-Hossa was actually playing quite well and they basically got benched for the period in favor of the first lines and Prucha got benched for "lack of production", I don\'t see Straka doin much more! How long is 37-yr-old Shanahan gonna last playin over 20 minutes a night? Roszival and Malik did nothing to warrant that kind of icetime either. Jason Ward and Shanahan are my favorite players right now, if their work ethic can rub off on the rest of the team they can be great.

Paul -
Since when is cycling a real sport and hockey not?  I personally don\'t watch cycling because to me it\'s boring to watch on TV, but does it make it any less of a sport?  But I\'m interested to know why hockey is not a real sport.  I guess that you can compare the two sports by saying that you cannot fully appreciate it unless you\'ve actually taken part in a game/race

If we\'re going to attack a sport, let\'s join forces and attack curling (a bunch people playing shuffle board with an oversized stone on ice) or GOLF!

And don\'t expect the whale to come back - the Hartford Failures did nothing when they were in CT, but have succeeding as the Hurricanes.

I know, I actually don\'t mind watching hockey games although like most sports I\'d rather go to a game than watch it on tv.

Cycling is all about the endurance. 30 days of endurance, non stop, 6-8 hours a day going as fast as you can while going up and down mountains, sometimes as many as 5 in one day. Personally, there is no sport out there that can compair itself to what those guys put themselves through.

Post by: Yoda on May 29, 2007, 12:03:23 pm
Again - what makes cycling more of a sport than hockey, football, baseball, basketball, golf, archery or every other sport out there.

They may perform more hours in a consolidated time period, but if you take other sports and add up the total time involved, it\'s all relative.

It all comes down to personal choice, cycling is better than hockey for you, the Yankees are better than that team in boston for me.  Let\'s just keep our fingers crossed that the tour de france isn\'t plagued by a winner that used enhancement drugs this year.

And cycling is boring compared to Hockey.

I would say Marathon running takes more endurance than cycling but whatever. I don\'t watch cycling or marathons.

At least they race though. They don\'t take points away for style etc like some crap people try to pass off as a "sport"

A valid argument, but the difference is, cycling is like doing a marathon every day for 30 days straight, some days the road is level, other days a mountain, but you still keep going. Then a winner is declaired based on overall times throught earned as points. That\'s what the yellow jersey is; the person who has the most points over all so that you can tell who is winning day after day. A little more endurance is needed than for just one day of running 25 miles. Definetly not something most people will sit and watch, but I channel surf during baseball and hockey games also. Like all sports though, if you do it, you enjoy watching it more.

The funny thing is, I really don\'t mind hockey. I just wanted to see if people would start talking about sports here again if I ripped on it. Guess it worked.

Well I Guess Anaheim won game 1 of the Stanley Cup Finals but I did not see the game. So the season is wrapping up.

I know all about the Tour De France. I actually think it is a cool race just that watching it lacks a lot to be desired. The locales are awesome tho.

I\'ll agree with you that the Garden is a nice place to watch hockey, but Rangers fans are horrible; half of them are smashed mid-way through the first period and the other half boo their team the entire game because they don\'t score a goal every 5 minutes.  In general, hockey tickets are really expensive, why would you want to waste that money by getting hammered; if that\'s the way they want to watch the game, then buy a case of beer and watch it on the tube - saves a lot of money that way!

another good game last night. i couldnt believe the amount of contested passes. as soon as a player would touch the puck, upon his release he would be boarded every time. the first 7-8 minutes were constant checks all over the ice, even away from the puck. the lone goal of the game was a gem. right through the defenders legs and just past the goalies right side. ottawa didnt generate a lot of offense so it was only time before their goalie let one up. i feel they will manage better at home, especially in canada where they have been dying for a stanley cup for +10 years or so.

I rooted for the American Team although I would have preferred the Cup be won by an Eastern Conference Team.

The playoffs were pretty good this year, I enjoyed them quite a bit. Glad Teemu got a cup, they were saying he might be done and will retire now. Glad the Ducks won the cup, wonder if Disney is kicking themselves for selling the team.

Would have been cool if the series lasted a little longer but oh well. Now just have to wait until October and do it all over again

I watched the 2nd period. Rather root for an american team than the canucks.
