The Breakfast - Zone One review
First off, a warning, this review contains spoilers. If it’s material you may not want to know, it is blacked out. To read that material, simply highlight it. When Dobs was making this album, he wanted to make mixes that people could identify if they really tried, but he also wanted to make you work at it. This review contains my notes on where the songs came from, but since you may want to do it yourself, I used the spoilers.
Why does this album even exist? The reasoning behind it is contract issues with the label. The breakfast cannot re-release any material that they have recorded in studio unless it goes through the label for a set length of time (five years). This may sound harsh, but it is actually a standard of practice. If this didn’t exists, then a song could be released on a small label, become a #1hit, get re-recorded that week elsewhere and then all the profits would go to the second studio, not the first (got it now)? Good. That being said, there is a loophole in this: one, you can release material that has not been recorded for studio yet. Or, two, you can take the jam from a song that is unique to the night it was recorded on, name it, and release it as a song. It is the combination of these two that created the album.
This may lead to some confusion however, because someone who doesn’t know the songs very well but owns this album may write a set list using these song names, when they are technically parts of songs that already exist. An example would be
Pinocchio, which is really just the jam from the middle of puppetry.
Someone who didn’t know may write a setlist as
Puppetry > Pinicchio
, when it is in fact just
Puppetry
.
Here we go!
The entire album was recorded on
5/7/04 in upstate new york. The only one to tape that night was Dobs, who did a multitrack and also mixed this album.
As a result, this is the only available recording of the material on the album.
Here is the full setlist:
May 7th, 2004 – Electric Company; Utica, NY
I: Doughboy, Wake Up in a Coma > The Vermont Song, Escher’s Etchings > Hush, Hard Luck Harry >
Dimension 5, Soul Finger
II: Language of the Gods, What the Funk*, No Regret, China Cat Sunflower > Puppetry, Inner Glimpse,
May Fly Disarray**, The Chase, Superfly Phaddy Fat
* Jason Press (Rezi) on Sax
** Head Like a Hole (Nine Inch Nails) tease; Five to One (Doors) tease
The first track is Wake up in a coma. This is the only ‘full’ song on the album. Ironically, the band has recorded this song in studio, but they did it when they were Moki Jam, and they did it back in 1998. This is a great instrumental song, and has changed style three or four times since its original conception. This is a good representation of the current version. For other versions, go get a copy of the Moki Jam album ‘Episodes’, and there is a great rendition of the second version from the Second Fonghoulish Freakout (http://www.archive.org/audio/etree-details-db.php?id=5715).
Plosion is the end jam from
Hard Luck Harry
. This is easily identifiable by the riff immediately following the drum fill near the beginning of the track.
Fly by the seat of your pants is the jam from
May fly disarray
. It is identifiable by the bass line, and more specifically from the teases that identify the show it came from.
Liberation I think is
the jam from Escher’s etching, based on the riff at the beginning, but I have to listen to it a few more times before confirming.
Pleasure Burn I have not identified yet. It is a good jam, but the segway into Moon: the new earth sounds a little rushed – the tempo changes ever so slightly. It sounds a little forced.
Moon: The new earth obviously is a jam out of
Space oddity by David Bowie
. This raises some questions however, because
Dobs told me that the entire album was mixed from one show, however, they did not play Space Oddity at that show
. I have no answer to this. This is a great jam – the only thing I don’t like about it is how the high hat suddenly gets loud at around 6:18. Personally I think it sounds like a bad mix, but maybe its there to hide something else? Who knows, it’s not unbearable, its just very present in the mix. The best thing about this song is the build up and segway into the next track. If it doesn’t leave a smile on your face, then you just don’t get what this album is about.
Pinocchio is a joke title, because the track, as I said earlier is
the jammed out end to puppetry, and Pinocchio is a puppet
. HAHAHA.
All in all this is a great album and showcases one of the reasons that the Breakfast is such a great band. If your looking for songs with lyrics, go buy real radio. But if you appreciate a great jam when you hear it, than you will love this album. Look for more to come over time, as this is just Zone one, and just because
this whole album was recorded at one show
, that wont always be the case.
As more shows are multitracked, more material will become available for Zone discs
. This album is only available at Breakfast shows, and is defiantly worth it – also, you get a copy of the real radio sampler with your purchase!
-
this was compiled from utica, oneonta & a place in p.a.! i guess, most from utica,i recorded these shows and with great respect to josh i cannot release them(not that you would want them!)
-
This seems like the Infared Roses Project by Bob Bralove and GD which was just a sonic experience that Bralove wanted to do. What I do not understand is the legal reasons stated for the making of this album.Industry standard is usually that songs recorded AND released cannot be re-released until the time specified in contract.
So what you\'re saying is all the songs used have been recorded and released in studio for a label be it their old label or new ? If so where are these albums? Also the Infared Roses Project did cause the problem Paul mentioned w/ newbies putting IRP jams on tapes. It was quite funny. It was done the same way so if you listened you could link the jams to the songs/dates culled from.
-
the majority of these songs are the \'jam\' sections of songs that have been released. SInce the jam is different each night, and this album is only that section, technically, it is a unique piece of music. As a result, they can release it in this fashion. At least thats my understanding of it.
-
So when you say released you are including those discs of live shows found on livediscs Yeah? If so I totally understand now.
-
the Zone Disc was not pulled all from one show it was pulled from an entire weekend. A show @ Utica, Wilkes-Barre, and Oneonta,
-
that actually makes more sence, because dobs told me the show he was working on was from PA, not NY.
-
thanks for the review Paul. Sounds like Zone One is exactly what I\'m lookin for.
-
With the Real Radio release having been delayed until February, the Breakfast have really done their fans right by releasing Zone One (and the Real Radio sampler).
I know there is a post on here somewhere where Paul gives up some spoilers about the jams on Zone One, but it is relatively easy to hear what tunes each of the jams are part of.
I always go on about the best ____ ever or the sickest ___ to date, but after hearing the jam with the "Head Like a Hole" and "5 to 1" mini jam in it, I know that some of the best versions of tunes out there are from shows that I have never ever heard. So when I say this is the best ever, I will be forever caviated with "of the shows that I have seen".
From the fade in\'s and out\'s of the jams to the titles of the tracks, it is easy to tell that this isn\'t some half-assed effort. I wanted to write this post while listening to the Zone One disk, but it has been stuck in my car since Friday. There are so many tasty moments from each member of the band.
SO ....
KUDOS to the Breakfast and all involved for bringing us this little tidbit of freshies to tide us over till February....or at least until Radio Joe has the Freakout up and streaming "A-Hem!!!" ;)
-
Dobs deserves a lot of credit too on these disks i think. without him they may not have gotten recorded and mixed and everything. He does the Breakfast well
-
Wah and I were talking about that last night.
Ser job Dobz!
Keep it up and good luck out on the road...
-
I am not really sure I understand what is on Zone 1.

It\'s The Breakfast equivalent of GD\'s Infared Roses Project. Dobs took jams from songs through a 3 nite run and w/ editing and mixing made "songs" from these jams.
Does that help?
-
Yeah that definitely provides a clear description. Now that I know what Zones entails, I hope to get a copy in the coming weeks.
So it was basically just a fun little project to get everyone excited?
-
ser job mr.dobs!!!!!

I believe it was that and too provide the loyal fanbase something to tide them over as Real Radio is delayed until Feb. Original release date was to be around right now.

Having heard Plosion now off the website (yet another reason to visit it ) and assuming the rest is just as awesome, I must say THANX to JOSH "ECHO" DOBSON for your incredible dedication to this band and for sharing your innate (and growing) talent as a sound engineer w/ us on this album. We all know how good you are in the "live" environment and now we know your studio talent is comparable. Great Work!!!!

-
good question there old buddy...fitz,where you at,slick???is is safe to say that gray isnt gonna do the breakfast lot shirts anymore??
-
aint no sharin\' in any kind of groove
-
The shirts were made? I know i put in an order for one a couple months ago.
-
We all put an order in, but when it comes down to the nitty gritty (meaning forkin over the scratch), i dont think anyone followed through....so no money = no shirts. YET.
-
I have had the $$ sitting in my Paypal acct. waiting to be told where to send it to get a shirt. Myself and Marcial have made a few efforts to get it back in people\'s minds but as we are far away it would be great if someone near the person making the order could prod abit!!!!
Oh yeah Zone One rox!
-
I just sampled Plosion off the main site. This is the first thing I\'ve heard off Zone. I\'m literally stuck against my wall right now, afraid to breathe. The guys sound JUST like the Ozric Tentacles. Where can I buy this or download it? Holy christ, how can I be such a huge breakfast fanboy without this album???!!
-
check the merch table. if they don\'t have any now I\'m sure more can be made up.
-
Yeah I didnt notice any Sat. night.. More must be made up!!
-
There are def none on the merch table.
I know the band doen\'t have any to sell but I\'m sure you could get this from someone.
As long as it\'s brought up, and since it\'s Dobz 3rd anniversary, this album sounds awesome so much body to it, and that all Dobz!!
-
hook it up son/sistah
-
actually I might have an extra one floating around
Wed, Richters?
-
Possibly, but doubtful as I am poor.
-
LOL How can Joe not have Zones 1? Loser ;)
-
The levels are mixed PERFECTLY!!!

with running the risk of sounding a bit noobish here.... I would also love to get my hands on a copy of zone one.... and unlike treychica i haven\'t even heard a single track off this disc, didn\'t even realy know what it was (altho i was aware of it) until just now. so what three night run are the recordings from?:newbie:
-
WTF, go to http://www.thebreakfast.net and then go to the music section. The bottom right side has the track I listened to.
-
LOL How can Joe not have Zones 1? Loser ;)
i guess we\'re forming a club joe....i don\'t have it either
-
fyi, a new batch of zone 1\'s for the merch table is being discussed..
-
Seriously, I would love just a huge batch of Zones.....
-
ron "should we do this?"
tim "why not"
jordan " i cain\'t think of a good reason why not"
adrian " i don\'t really care...just hand me that instrument"
ron " good....then it\'s settled?"
tim " it is"
jordan "settled!"
adrian " hey, i just figured out how to play quadrephenia with these two spoons and a coffee cup....wanna hear?"
i\'m thinking the discussion sounds something like this only over the course of a few weeks.
-
BWAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHA
adrian=the reincarnation of Keith Moon. I SWEAR I sometimes it looks like Adrian has Moon\'s eyes or at least the same facial expressions. I for one would not be suprised and would welcome any songs off Quadrophenia... (Dr. Jimmy or The Dirty Jobs)

Hot damn are you ser? Really now how can YOU not have one? :sigh:

-
If it doesn\'t get released again and I burn it for you , would you pay me the 5 or 10 bucks that it was going for (I can\'t remember), and I\'ll give the $ to the band?
-
Zone 1 should Defintely be at the table soon. I personally can\'t wait because i don\'t have a copy...have to steal George\'s to listen to that ridiculus shit. unbelivable jams
-
Worth every penny!!!!!!!!!!
-
what about a zone II?
-

Weak... Toad\'s should get first dibs! BTW how the fuck does Leith know this?
-
Leith probably making copies.
-
Then Leith should hook a brotha up!!
-
i think i have a bootleg copy of this myself... ... its got the coma jam, and a mayfly jam, eschers jam. . . . maybe a HLH jam too (we talkin about the same thing here)? i can burn copies for some if you\'d like. . . .
leith is there album artwork included in your production? i\'d love to see some, cuz all i have is an electronic copy. . .
-
Then Leith should hook a brotha up!!
get to utica and hook yourself up with not only zone 1 but 3 sets for $5
-
I\'ll take whatever I can get.. I just want a taste of what these guys could be releasing had they decided not to archive from the soundboard.
-
i think both jam segments from hard luck are on there?
but the cake of it all is the coma first track. my god it\'s the most bad ass thing i think this band has played.

thats a good deal! :bancouch:
-
bumping this thread, as there\'s some good info in paul\'s first post, and there were, in fact, copies of Zone One at the EC last night.
-
is this still (or newly again) available at shows? and if not, can someone hook me up?
-
There were about 10 new copies available last night. There were 6 or 7 left at the end of the night.
-
im glad i picked one of these up at the EC. i put it on for the ride home and pulled into my driveway just as the last track was ending. nice work by all who contributed! thanks for making more copies leith.
-
Jason, if you just want a copy, I\'ll get one out to you. PM me your addy, I\'m not sure where I put it from before.
-
hopefully more copies in albany?
-
hopefully more copies in albany?
The copies I made are at the merch table and the band has decided to charge like $5 for it. I do believe there are a few left and rumors of a Zone 2 have begun to emerge so I am not sure how much more official distribution Zone 1 is going to get.
-
mmmmm, zone 2
-
i read the initial post and only one song wasnt accounted for. im guessing track 5 - Pleasure Burn is
Great big fiery ball in the sky, 2004-05-06
seeing as the song title kind of ties in with the track name
-
Hey, I remember The Breakfast selling cd\'s titled Zone 1 at their shows a while ago. I remember not having any cash on me to buy the cd. Does that cd still exist or what? I wouldn\'t mind hearing it. I know it was a collection of jams and stuff.
-
That makes two of us....
Mediafire anyone?
-
i doubt that there are any zone 1 discs around anymore. i can burn you a copy of mine if it\'s okay with the band.. they should really bring those back or at least allow a link to download zone 1 somewhere off of .info or .org.
-
lieth had a bunch recently, they are probably still at the merch table
-
is it live stuff or from the studio?
-
i was actually wondering just last night whether zone 1 falls under the \'don\'t put on torrent sites\' rule... if its ok, i\'ll sendspace it for y\'all, but if not, sorry collective chips...
-
is it live stuff or from the studio?
It is comprised of live jams.
-
would be great to hear an updated one with the new line up and Dobs back.Sullys had some worthy jams.. if there is even a recording
-
Much like a phish official release or moe\'s 06 portland shows, those jams were taken from shows where no release was allowed for the evening. Hence, even though the band allows audience taping for all shows, they reseve the right (and on these dates applied the right) to declair the shows recording as non-tradable.
In other words, Zone one is to be treated like any other official album release from the band. Unless you are told otherwise by Tim, it\'s not for trade.

so then no one gets to hear it. yayyyyyyyyyyy
-
I didn\'t say that, you just need to ask tim. Since that was a dobson creation I don\'t see why they can\'t make up a few more and put them out on the merch table if people are interested.

Sorry Chip. There was a thread (http://www.thebreakfast.info/forum/showthread.php?t=10282&highlight=zone) about it last August that you posted a bunch in. Did you not follow through with Leith\'s PM?
-
Leith\'s answer was come to Utica.....
It\'s not like I wouldn\'t buy it if it were readily available.
-
yeah I was supposed to get one of these from Leith > Todd a while back, but then I didn\'t end up going to the show or something so....
i was actually wondering just last night whether zone 1 falls under the \'don\'t put on torrent sites\' rule... if its ok, i\'ll sendspace it for y\'all, but if not, sorry collective chips...
Any word on the sendspace situation? I\'ve already bought this disc once and then lost it :sadban: It was a fucking awesome disc for the record.
-
It\'s not like I wouldn\'t buy it if it were readily available.
Same here. I don\'t want to come off like a mooch. I just want to hear it.
-
Hey I paid for it.
If the band is ok with it we could make a bunch of copies like Leith did for the first batch and they could be sold again at merch
-
Hell, I paid for bootleg Breakfast tapes back in the day. Maybe I should bring them back to the merch table to be sold too!!
-
i have it and will upload it later.
email me and ill hook u up with the sendspace link.

:thumbsup: I remember the price being $5... well worth it for the quality
now why don\'t they make more of these and make a couple bucks....... put them together on there own and it\'s all basically profit. Put out a Breakfast Zone for each era of Breakfast
-
I don\'t think tapes exist of that quality and caliber.
-
chadwick was not big on letting people get soundboard patches, let alone multitrack soundboard patches so there are probably not many trio shows that were taped anything above a matrix quality. What made zone 1 unique was dobson did multichannel records of several shows and then mixed all the jams back together, this beef barley guitar solo over that shows hard luck harry piano, etc. A lot more went into that album than just the band playing one night and then him releasing the soundboards. It\'s a very creative piece of work.
-
xenochronicity?
-
Breakfast 3.0 has been having conversations (ad nauseam) about Zone 2 - claims the rumor mill.
talk to the Afro\'d one.
-
Nice, nice.

WUIAC
Plosion
Fly by the seat of your pants
Liberation
Pleasure Burn
Moon:The New Earth
Pinocchio
-
Thanks man. I owe you a smoke up. I think I\'m going to Daniel St. the 26th? Coming from Mass, I don\'t get to go to as many shows as I want.
-
I still have a bunch of promo material (slim cases/cdrs/label stickers). If there is interest I can make a stack of 50 Zone 1 discs to be sold at the merch table again. If this is cool with the band I can drop them off at the River Street show in a couple weeks.

That\'s all.

not to bust balls, but how would knowing the song listing make you want to hear it more. Those titles have nothing to do with the jams that were made.
btw, the cd is really good, i\'m gonna have to break it out tonight

haha i know...they sounded cool though, and i love wuiac...plus, i thought fly by the seat of your pants was initially referring to the moe. song "seat of my pants"

after listening to this for the first time i god knows how long, alls i can say is hole e shit.
the last tune=my favorite.
dobz did a great job with this.
folks need to dl this stat

 I\'d say yeah, but I\'ll check w/ the band first... This would be good for those "newbs" who like the band, but not enough to pay full price for CD\'s
-
I don\'t think the band would want to put "Zone 1" at the merch table anymore. The music on "Zone 1" doesn\'t represent the current lineup. Thats my $.02

so what if it doesn\'t represent the current lineup, kidz might still want to cop one since it is unbelievably ser. there was old Psychedelic Breakfast posters on the merch table not too long ago. Just sayin\', people need to hear zone 1 cause it\'s so damn good.

By that logic they should not sell any more copies of Deuce, Real Radio or Moxie Epoxy
-
By that logic they should not sell any more copies of Deuce, Real Radio or Moxie Epoxy
if logic was being used then more copies would have been made over 3 years ago when they all sold.

all CD\'s, both live and studio, plus all videos, posters, and fans who used to go see the band before the current lineup should be burned and buried

-
Didn\'t someone post a few pages back about making more "zone" CDs?
I think this is a good idea.
Zone 2 = Trio/Breakfast 2.0
Zone 3 = Current line up.
Though they might not have enough material for 1 or 3.
-
I DL\'d this yesterday at it is sick! Very cool concept and sound quality is top notch. My vote goes to making more of these (annually or whatever)

So I was listening to the Jim Cobb scheme today and before or after the song Tim tells the audience that Jim is up there because he won the zone 1 cover. got me to thinking, is this thing on iTunes yet? so i checked and
IT IS!
I just downloaded it and am currently listening to it. I\'m surprised nobody has posted about this yet.
SUPER SER!
Jim the cover looks great too man. HAPPY DOWNLOADING!

Nice!

Did they rename some of the songs, or is my memory just shot?
-

dobz took jams from an upstate ny run a few years ago and created zone1.
no words,except 2 teases(bow down and 5to 1),but ser jams.
the only reason i question them releasing this is because 2 of the members arent even around anymore.either way,i hope it does ok.
-
when was it officially released?
-
2004 freakout along with the real radio promo disc that had inner glimpse, sleeping beauty, jive talkin\' and earache my eye
-
So is it being re-released?
I had no idea it was that old (I got mine last year)
-
Tim used to overpower the band... and it shows on this disc (Though it is ridiculously awesome).
The band is way more balanced nowadays.

100% agreeded.
Now everyone shreds.

:wacko::wacko::wacko:

After listening to Zone 1 today for the first time since it was first released, I definitely miss the organ ("miss the organ" = no homo).

I don\'t know about that. There is some real naasty playing from everyone involved on Zone1. The Save brings some tremendous basslines to the table. Sequoia Branch has some real tasteful synth / organ action throughout. I dont know.
-
i would say old shows i\'ve heard sound more like "The Tim Palmieri Show" than they do now. generally...
-
dangledooze = stealin the show

There is some tasteful playing coming from all members of the band, but it\'s just clear that Tim is the defined soloist and the rest of the members are just backing on Zone 1. I don\'t hate it, I actually like it, I\'m a guitar solo freak, but it\'s just def a changed band now... they jam as a whole which is a step in the right direction.

I hear ya.

Does anyone know what show(s) these were pulled from and are there plans to release any more?

Wait they changed the song names for itunes, what the? I thought the jams were taken from a 3 night run, not one show?? Are the answers to these questions somewhere in these eleven pages??? Are these even real questions or just statements with question marks at the end???? :?: AHHH we may never know! :hair:

You call me and I will give you the straight answers. I know people and am going to see people tonight.
I keep hearing Dobson listening and mixing Breakfast. I think he is doing something with acoustic shows.

thats a relief. tell dobson to hurry the fuck up and come out with zone 2, its only been like what 4, 5 years.
-
I can not confirm what he is doing because it is a topic we do not discuss often but I can assure you this. There is some heady acoustic Breakfast being mixed in the studio.
