Title: interested in a Breakfast party in CT?
Post by: TerryOB on November 17, 2004, 11:16:32 am
Hey everyone,

Haven\'t been around these parts much lately.    I caught up with some of you at Porter\'s in September.  It was great to see you all, as well as the band.  It had been waaaaaay tooooo loooong.

Anyways, I\'m thinking of hosting a party/Breakfast show in Fairfield, CT, on Saturday, December 4th.   If I decide to go through with this, I\'ll be renting out a hall for this to all take place and I\'ll be providing an open bar and food taboot.  Unfortunately, to make this possible, I\'d need to charge $20 per person.

In order for me to pull this off, I need to make sure enough people would come.  I think if I get 100 people I\'d be lucky to break even after paying off the band and the venue and booze tab, etc.

But I\'m ok with that.  I\'m not looking to make money, just trying to put together a good time to be had by all.

So let me know if you\'d all be up for something like this.  It could be an amazing night.

Breakfast + open bar + no security = one hell of a show

Hope to see you all soon.  Take it easy.

Cheers,

Terry

Cool!  Glad to see there seems to be interest in this sort of thing.

One thing I forgot to mention...I\'d have to keep it to 21+ for liability issues.

I\'m thinking of having a friend\'s band open up from 6PM-8PM and then having the Breakfast from 8:30-midnight.    I\'d make it go later but there is a curfew at this venue.

And the location is perfect.  Right off of I-95.  No neighbors in the area to complain.  And a big parking lot for all of us to take over for the evening.

I wanna make this happen.  I\'ll check this post later in the day and hopefully there are more people who want in on this.  I just want to make sure I don\'t lose my shirt on this deal.

Great to hear from all of you again!  Anyone hear from Tansley lately?  I\'m wondering if he and his posse would be up for this.

The 4th is a Saturday so I can definitely be there.  Wouldn\'t miss a do-it-yourself show.  Could be like one of the old Butterfield shows with no restrictions.

Sounds like a show that can\'t be missed.

I\'m confirmed!

looking good!   psyched to see so many responses!

and since this is my thread, I can hijack it.    do any of you know anybody looking for a one-bedroom in Fairfield?  I live in the downstairs of a house.  the guy upstairs is moving out of that apt and I don\'t want some 50 year old lady moving in there.

$650 per month.   not too bad for your own place in FFLD.

if you know anyone interested drop me a line.

I wouldn\'t imagine there should be a problem posting something on this site, since this is a fan-based site, right Dave?  I would want to let as many people know as possible, and get plenty of heads in the door...

Alright, I got the green light from their booking agency.  They said as long as it\'s not on the band\'s official site then we\'re good.

Just trying to play by the rules here.  Thanks, guys!

SER veteran move Terry (like none other to date)....
This along with a mid december CT show should make up for a weak NYE Max Creek opening slot.......

can you disclose the location????
Title: interested in a Breakfast party in CT?
Post by: leith on November 18, 2004, 01:33:10 pm
Speaking of Official Sites this site is listed as The Official Breakfast fan site in the Breakfast emails. I don\'t know if this has any bearing as the booking agency has given clearance just wanted to make sure it was known.
Title: interested in a Breakfast party in CT?
Post by: davepeck on November 18, 2004, 01:39:52 pm
interesting, but what does \'official\' mean?

it should be noted, if it\'s not already known, that this site privately owned and operated, and is not owned by the breakfast, space city affair, hmg, the agency group, sonance records, the puppet house theatre, etc, etc....

in other words, we\'re independant.

maybe i need a notice somewhere...
Title: interested in a Breakfast party in CT?

I just happened to see it on the bottom of the email with all their links. I thought the Official was thrown on there once .org was up as an end to THE DEBACLE. At one time there was 2 sites listed as fan sites on the bottom of the emails but someone got crazy and blew that.

I\'d love to help you but I think it\'s the venue\'s law.   I\'ll have to check into it and get back to you.  Remind me in a week or so if you haven\'t heard back.

Southport is just a section of Fairfield.  It\'s like Manhattan and NYC.   The only reason I listed it as Southport instead of Fairfield is because when you Mapquest the address Southport works and Fairfield doesn\'t for some reason.  I have no idea why but it seems to be the way it\'s set up.

Anyways, Southport/Fairfield is on the coast of Long Island Sound.  It\'s about 40 minutes from NYC and 20 minutes from New Haven.   Hartford is about 45-60 minutes away depending on who is driving and whether or not you take the Merritt Parkway.

Hey boys and girls,

Few things:

1) I\'m really looking forward to the 4th.  However, I\'m definitely sticking my neck out financially.  So bottom line....if this works out, then then I\'ll probably do it again sometime down the road.  But if it backfires on me, then odds are that I won\'t try it again.

That being said, any support I can get from all of you in rounding up people to come would be greatly appreciated.  I want this night to go over well, but i can\'t do it alone.

2)  A already forked over a good chunk of change to rent out the venue and pay for the band.   I\'ll have some funds leftover to invest in stocking up the bar, but I could use more.   So the more people who buy tix in advance = more money for me to buy booze and food for that night.

3)  I\'m trying to think of a name for this event.   Any bright ideas?  Suggestions?  Comments?  Gripes?

4)  Anyone who submits a gripe can\'t come.    ;)

Thanks!

-T

Either send a check to me at:

Terry O\'Brien
40 Exchange Place
Fairfield, CT 06825

or....

PayPal to me at terryob@optonline.net

$20 per person.   Be sure to include your name somewhere and I\'ll put you plus however many people on the list.   Then I\'m going to be giving out bracelets once you arrive.

A check is preferable since PayPal takes a percentage.  But I know how lazy I can be so I\'m fine with people just using PayPal since it\'s quick and easy.

so.....the Westport Inn is just up the road and it\'s really nice and has an indoor pool but it\'s pricey.    think it\'s about 170 a night.

the Fairfield Inn is also pretty nice and costs about 100 per night.

not sure what\'s less than that.  I\'m sure there are some that aren\'t bad that are close by.  I\'ll look into it over the weekend and get back to you.

I checked out the layout on Saturday.   They claim it holds 200 people but I think that I\'m going to keep it to 150.

There is one room with a kitchen and bar in it and then another room where the stage is.  So I think they include both of those rooms in the capacity.  But we all know we\'ll be spending most of our time in the room with the stage and if I had to guess then I\'d say that room would hold 150 or so.

All of that might not even be an issue though.  I\'m hoping to get 100 people there.  I\'d be really surprised if 150 people show up.  But ya never know...

It is sad that the Breakfast have to wonder about getting 150 people to a show in their HOME STATE, on a Sat, night, with an open bar...

I just remembered that I will be working 7am-9pm for the 3 business days leading up to Terry\'s Breakfast buffet.  It will surely be a major treat after busting ass for a few days.  Good timing Terry.  I\'m also pleased that the show is on a Saturday because I would miss the opening songs if I were sitting on the highway in Boston traffic on a Friday night.  3.5 hours of scheduled Breakfast sounds like a legend in the making, especially since the crowd will be comprised of rowdy Breakfast diehards.

Terry, hows the billing of the show coming along?

I am on a Memory of a Free Festival kick after seeing it pop up on the last show of this past tour....

maybe a

"Slow Gophers and The Breakfast present Memory of a Free Festival"

The opening house music could be MoaFF Part 1 and post show could be MoaFF Part 2.....

I like that one.  It\'s simple and right to the point, but also a double entendre.  I\'m going to go with that as a name for this event.

Definitely feel free to bring food.  I\'m going to supply some but I don\'t know how much money I\'ll have leftover to spend on food after taking care of the bill for the bar.

FYI....there is a full kitchen in this place(lots of big pots and pans, stoves, ovens, fridge, sinks, sterno trays, etc).  As long as we clean what we use, we may as well take full advantage of it.

Any suggestions on what kind of food to get?  I\'ll be getting chips, dips, veggie platter, pretzels, cheese, crackers, etc.   But I\'d also like to try to provide something more than just snack food.

I was just going to reply and say that I talked to some people last night and we all agreed that the Holiday Inn would be your best bet.  All the hotels in Westport and Fairfield are way too expensive.

I suppose we can give them a minute or two for a quick break before they go back out there and play Grand Scheme>Rufus>PEaches en Regalia>Night of the Thumpasaurus, Innerglimpse>Episode 1>Episode 2>Episode3, Stash, Doughboy>love lake>Voodoo Chile, Uncle Freddy>Heather>Sundance, Superfly>Memory of Liz Reed>Superfly, Simpleton>Son of Simpleton>Taboo or not Taboot, Hot Lanta (w/Yacavone)>Tribal Funk>Buquebus>Flower Punk, Jive Talkin>Night Fever>More Than a woman, Sleeping Beauty>No Regret>Score, Mayfly.  Maybe they need a little more time and will play for 6 hours like they did upsate NY a few years ago.

Well, in the contract I signed, the booking agency made me be very clear about the exact times I wanted the Breakfast to play.

So, technically, the band is supposed to play from 8:30-midnight.  But I assumed they\'d take a breather somewhere along the way.

I\'m not going to be a stickler about anything in the contract.  I don\'t think the band will either.    To me, the contract is just a formality.

As long as they show up and jam I\'ll be happy.  And if they bring their A-Game then I\'d be even happier.

Hey Guys and Gals,

Just spoke with the dude who is in charge of the hall.   One thing he requested is that we stay away from the highway.

The venue is literally 100 feet from I-95 and there is an entrance ramp right by the parking lot to the hall.  Just don\'t do anything stupid that would draw attention to us because I know I\'m not the only one who would prefer not see any state troopers on Saturday.

Also, try to remember that I put down a sizable deposit on this place and if I don\'t get it back then that means there won\'t be more shows at this venue.  So if you see anyone doing anything they shouldn\'t be either tell them to stop or let me know about it so that I can.

Cool?  Thanks!

P\'s,

Terry

Yeah, that shouldn\'t be a problem.   I think I\'m at about 50 right now.  I think I\'m going to cap it off at 150.  But I\'d be surprised if we get that many.

FYI....if you have not sent a check yet then don\'t put it in the mail because at this point it probably won\'t make it in time.

So far I\'ve gotten about 40 tix paid for up front.  Thanks for those who paid already.  It will benefit all of you on Saturday because that money is going straight into the bar.

It looks like there shouldn\'t be a problem for anyone just showing up at the show without having already bought a ticket.  Unless 200 people show up unexpectedly then I should be able to let everyone in who pays at the door.

Can\'t wait for Sat!  It will be the Breakfast of Champions!

definitely is not discouraged!   I\'m doing my best to plan ahead but it\'s so hard to tell how many people will actually show up.  and the damn CT liquor laws prohibit me from buying after 9PM which I\'m guessing is right about the time people will start really drinking.

so feel free to bring something extra.   if nothing else, you can keep it in your trunk and bust it out late in the evening.

thanks though!  good looking out.

A word to the wise.....TRY TO SHOW UP EARLY IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY PAID FOR TICKETS!!!!!

All of a sudden friends of mine are coming out of the woodwork and saying they\'re bringing a ton of people with them.  So this show very well might sell out.

I don\'t want to have to close the doors to anyone, but it\'s only fair to the people who paid in advance.   They don\'t deserve to be squished.

Of course, people have a way of saying they are going to show up and then bailing.  So for all I know, I might not come close to selling the show out.

It\'s so hard for me to judge how much booze and food to buy.  But I\'m trying to overestimate just in case.

Anyways, I just wanted everyone to be forewarned abut the ticket situation.  Plus, with an open bar and an opening band, there is no reason to show up late...right?

Just keeping you all in the loop.   Drop me a line if you have any questions.

Oh, and two things....

1)  I hope I didn\'t discourage anyone from coming tomorrow by making it sound sold out.   It\'s only 1/3 full as of now.

2)   We are in the upstairs of the building.  Park in the back and walk in the main doors.  You\'ll figure it out, I\'m sure.  But anyways, downstairs there is a bar that is open until 1:30PM!  So if we run out of booze upstairs we can go downstairs and get our drink on latenight.

If not, I certainly would be first in line to toss him more dough so it could happen again

Thanks for coming out on Saturday everyone!   I\'m so glad it worked out as well as it did.   We ran into very few problems and it was a fun crowd.

There were roughly 130 wristbands given out on Saturday.   Around 20 or so were given to the band members and people on their guestlists.   So I sold about 110 tix altogether.

I ended up paying extra for the hall so that we could run past midnight.   But my friends who were bartending kicked me some of the tips they got so I ended up on the plus side (barely) after it was all said and done.

So the show was a success.   I\'ll definitely be doing it again in the future.    Next time I think I\'m going to cut back on the food and add more alcohol.

Anyways, thanks again to all of you for coming out and showing your support.  And thanks to the Breakfast for bringing the heat!

Yeah, I think I\'m just going to have snacks next time and not the platters and sandwiches.

Not sure yet.  Maybe as soon as a month or two.  I\'ll have to contact their booking agent.   I\'ll be sure to keep you all posted.

Terry- Just wanted to say a public thank you. It\'s great that you made out okay, and can do it again. We all have to get more of our lame friends out next time. How can anyone not want to go to something like that?? It is beyond me. THANK YOU AGAIN!!!

Cool!  I\'m glad you had a good night.  That was the whole idea.

I figured people would be a little hesitant about going to an "unofficial" show at first, but with any luck that has changed after Saturday.   Hopefully word will spread and the turnout will be just as good or better next time around.

I\'m going to try to book The Breakfast there as much as possible.  But when they are touring the rest of the country, I\'ll probably try to get some other bands in that same venue.

Anyone have any suggestions?  It would have to be a band that can draw a decent crowd in CT but isn\'t too big either.

My first thought was Deep Banana Blackout.  I\'ve contacted them and am waiting to hear back.

Any other ideas?   Who would you go see play there besides the Breakfast?

I need to learn how to scan photos so I can upload them to the gallery.  There are some funny Dave shots from the UAC as well as a photo of me poking a passed out Steve.  I must have ran out of film before Walsh started rapping in the Holiday Inn.
