Very appreciative crowd. Everyone was digging it and dancing thoroughly throughout the night. I turned around at the end of the show and noticed everyone crowding around the merch table.

Some serious face ownage, many there were staring at each other in disbelief (myself included).

Gavin had to sit in the van, as they wouldn\'t admit people under 21 (though they didn\'t check any IDs at all).

Apparently some dude in a blazer wandered in and proceeded to push a random guy around the venue, though no one noticed except Ron Spears. He was ready to "Save" the day, and kick some ass.

I\'m turning into Stephen Gencs: "each show is better than the last". Objectivity = out the window. Al Z = owned.

When was the last Cosmic Spaceway ?

Seems like a while since I have heard that tune. I actually really like that song and think it is one of the better songs suited to Rons vocal stylings

Cosmic Spaceway is the shit, PERIOD!  I singlehandedly annoyed Ron enough to get that back in the repitoire for the NXNW Philly show in \'05.  It has been back in style since.  Shows with nothing but Balls to the wall "ragers" are B...O...R...I...N...G!!!  Without an ebb and flow to a setlist, it doesn\'t capture the true journey that is a Breakfast show.

Why such a long one-setter???  Easily could have broken that up:

I:  Episode I (Happy) > Great Big Fiery Ball In The Sky > Episode I (Happy), Tricky Ways, jam > Frankly Po Zest > Cosmic Spaceway Rhyme > Frankly Po Zest, Honey Butter > Drum Solo

II: Good Things, Gladys Pimp And Kangaroos With Me > Wake Up In A Coma > Inner Glimpse, Love Lake > jam > Taboo Or Not Taboot

It just looks strange to never stop with that many songs???  Al Z. any word on why they went straight thru???

Well put. I\'d love to see a show w/ Eppy 1, Good Things, CSWR, and WakeUpinaComa tossed between the ragers for good meter

of course with a Gladys Pimp tossed in to balance it all out :D

so, that was your fault, huh walsh?!! just as it had begun to disappear you forced it back from the dead?... well, i just wish you weren\'t so much taller than you, so i could reach up and bop you on the head (ala little bunny foofoo) for that! barely coherent lyrics (i mean seriously, cosmic spaceway rhyme?? what the hell is that supposed to mean?), an insipid, uninteresting chorus melody, and, may i add, fairly out of character for everything else they play. yes, ron sings it well, but it still annoys the hell outta me everytime i hear it. it really sounds like a simplistic kid\'s song, not a song by the breakfast. maybe a song by psychedelic breakfast, but not the breakfast. and i know its a good cool down song. and i, too, think that non-stop ragers are of less quality than a show with a good building of power/energy, but with the newer slower tunes, i just think there\'s no reason to play this one anymore. they\'re past it these days. its turned off everyone i\'ve played it for (within the context of playing them a show), and drives me away from the music every time i\'ve seen it live. i even had one guy at the funk box ask me, \'what the hell\'s this?\' and i brushed it off with a \'oh, its a little something to let them take a breather\' to which dude replied, \'well, i hope they don\'t need too much air....\'

sorry to turn this into a bitchhate diatribe,
leith

the "ala" is what i was going for, but i couldn\'t remember those three simple letters to save my damn life...

yes, psych bfast had plenty of great songs (obviously) but there were also plenty of less mature songs, too. plus, in my mind at least, they often forced the psychedelia too much in the olden days. and csr definitely has the forced feel to it.

but really, i\'ll stop now.

no need to stop m8, that\'s what these threads are for, discussing stuff, that is..!

I\'ve heard from different people in different posts and face to face that they think the song writing is more mature these days. I guess I never totally agreed with that sentiment. I mean, some of the lyrics were crazier and made less sense from a sane point of view back in the dizzy. But then again, a lot of the older/original PB era songs are totally epic ... mooboos, buquebus, puppetry, etc etc etc... and then again, a lot of the older/orginal PB era songs are great examples of more traditional songwriting ... ? and the Mind, Eppy1 (sometimes words just get in the way when you\'re speaking the Language of the Gods ;) )... um, others too.

As for the forced psychedelia, I dunno. They used to be a lot more funky, and Tim would play a shitload of notes on that Telecaster which I thought was pretty badass. But I really think 2006 has been the most Psychedelic year for this band... with the new synth FX, bringing back oldschool trax, re-creating jams and coming up with awesome segues.

Like Tim said early on in the year, oh-six has been a year for new tricks!

I was always down with the old school psychedelia though.... lots of the early shows I went to I definitely had to take a minute to find my bearings before I could find the door to bat country on the way out ! Like sheep in a herd

among other things..

well, yeah, the lyrics have definitely gotten away from the sillier side of things (which i didn\'t really mind), but musically they\'ve grown leaps and bounds. now, mooboo\'s (still my favorite bfast tune), puppetry, etc, have the elements that seem more mature - a full arc, not just an instant-rage kind of approach - but all of the newer tunes have this. it started, i think, with real radio and has really come on strong in the last year\'s worth of tunes. good things, for example is all about building the bittersweet, furute peek is similiar, honeybutter, while rage-ish, also feature more of a musical arc than it would have, say, three or four years ago. surreal radio could be played on the radio (as opposed to most of real radio), late>exposure is a brilliant combination of the old and the new.....

i guess what i\'m getting at, is that for the first time, their songs don\'t require you to be ready for a full on assault right from the get go. they draw the listener in and then grow until the gigantic jam is needed, not just there. and you\'re right, some of their songs were great examples of more traditional songwriting. but now i think they\'re managing to figure out how to combine the traditional elements with their own, unique approach. and its that synthesis that i think is what makes them sound so much more mature. then add in that that maturity gives the songs even more potency and i think that\'s why more folks have been able to appreciate what they\'ve been doing lately. its familiar, but altogether new.

and this year may well be more psychedelic than others (thank you boomerang pedal!) but it doesn\'t seem as forced. some of the things they used to do vocally, for instance, seemed like they were really trying for a certain sound, as opposed to just allowing it to happen. and that\'s an easy one to figure out why, simple age and mastery of craft. i remember thinking in early 05 that they\'d gotten away from those sorts of vocal stylings, mostly, i thought, because of the approach to the real radio tunes and wanting them to be more accessible. and i think it only helped! now, instead of trying to make it psychedelic, it just is. plus, they\'ve added more trancyness to their sound, so that helps, too.  and they\'re doing it in their own way, instead of just trying to make it sound like things they\'d heard before. that\'s what i meant by \'forced\'.

Nope, we were told before they started that it would be a single, 2-hour set.

I believe a Puppetry and a Slipknot are missing from the setlist.

Great mix of tunes!

YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY Ulee\'s birthday show!
I looove Cosmic spaceway rhyme because the notes in the slow solo literally cause the muscles around my "sacral chakra" (uterus!) to relax.  the later part "crash/flash etc." gets so light and transcendentally beautiful.

Title: Mill Valley\'s Sweetwater to close
Post by: skalnbyc on August 07, 2007, 12:23:03 am
Quote from: Marin Independent Journal;123416
Mill Valley\'s Sweetwater to close After more than 30 years in Mill Valley, Sweetwater, the rock club that became a Marin County cultural institution, has been told to close by the end of the month.

Sweetwater owners Thom and Becky Steere have been given a 30-day notice by their landlord to vacate the landmark Throckmorton Avenue nightspot, where greats like Jerry Garcia, Carlos Santana, Elvis Costello, Bonnie Raitt and other rock stars have performed over the past three decades.

The building will undergo major improvements, requiring rent increases that the Steeres cannot afford.

Mill Valley Mayor Chris Raker, who was surprised to hear of the closure, called the news upsetting.

"I\'m extremely distressed to hear it. It\'s a major loss to the community. While I welcome the improvements to the building, I wish some accommodation could have been made to allow Sweetwater to stay."

In an emotional meeting Saturday morning, the Steeres gave their dozen employees the news. "There were lots of tears," an upset Becky Steere said, her voice cracking. "We\'re a family. This is our life. We\'re all devoted to Sweetwater. We\'re feeling deep sadness and sorrow right now. It\'s heartbreaking."

The Steeres say they\'ve been looking for a new home for Sweetwater, but it will be impossible to re-create its living-room-like ambience, to replace its barnwood walls decorated with memorabilia and photos of musicians who have played there.

"How do you move an institution?" Becky Steere asked. "You can\'t carry away the memories of all the musicians who have performed here, the magic that\'s been on that stage. If you move an institution like Sweetwater, you lose the soul of the place."

The Steeres, who saved the club when they took it over from previous owner Jeanie Patterson in 1998, clashed with their landlord in 2004 over rent increases and other issues.

They threatened to leave during those negotiations, but managed to work out a month-to-month lease.

But now they\'ve been told to be out by Sept. 1, at the latest.

"We\'ve had this scene before, but this time it\'s real," Becky Steere said. "Unless some miracle happens, this is the end."

The Sweetwater building at 153 Throckmorton Ave. is owned by the Aversa family, longtime proprietors of adjacent La Ginestra restaurant.

The Aversas are planning "major repairs" that will require the building to be vacant "for an unknown but extended period," according to a statement signed by the Steeres and by Fabio Aversa for his family.

"Once these repairs are completed, the intent is to re-rent the space, but the increase in rent to offset the improvements will make it impossible for Sweetwater to reoccupy the space," the statement said. "It also makes little sense for Sweetwater to move and then move again, perhaps months later."

The Aversas say they plan to tear back interior walls to make sure the building meets seismic safety standards and to improve the plumbing and electrical systems.

"While there have been ups and downs in the relationship between the club and the building owner, both of us are proud of our long-term relationship and regret that it is coming to an end," the joint statement said.

Fabio Aversa did not immediately return calls for comment.

John Goddard, whose Village Music record store closes in September due to issues including escalating rents after some 40 years in Mill Valley, blasted the Aversas.

"Anyone who has eaten at La Ginestra in the past 10 years has given tacit validation to everything the Aversas have put the current and former owners of Sweetwater through," he said. "They ought to be ashamed of themselves."

The Steeres recently took over operation of the Larkspur Caf Theater, which they had hoped to run in addition to Sweetwater.

"It will never become Sweetwater," Becky Steere said. "Sweetwater is Sweetwater, a place where big-name musicians come and play, not for the money, but because of the history of this great room.

"Everyone loved the place."
