Honestly... its not that bad of an area.  The first time I was here it was one of the Willie Waldman Projects and heading down there I was a bit questionable as to what the environment would be like.  The place itself is nice you can check it out online... its kind of on the Bridgeport/Fairfield line... I mean anywhere around the \'port your taking a risk... but I would venture to say this area is a bit less risky than downtown!=.

It never ceases to amaze me how many people think BPT is a so sketchy/ghetto.  You people must lead very sheltered lives.

i think it\'s a mistake to call it bridgeport. i mean it technically is, but a more accurate description would be black rock. it borders fairfield and bridgeport. it\'s not as nice as most of fairfield. it\'s not as bad as most of bridgeport. but it\'s more fun than either one. not sketchy unless you\'re scared of drunken fairfield U students

Well I didn\'t exactly expect a satistical breakdown, but I am glad to see the thoroughness of your analysis. Make sure you attach a cover sheet to those TPS reports while you are at it ;)

All I\'m saying is that the majority of places that you will ever visit in Bridgeport are not nearly as bad as they are made out to be.  I guess if you are living in the middle of Father Panic village you might have another perspective.  It\'s not like Camden, for example, where you walk 3 seconds off the main strip and are right in the middle of the ghetto.

what can I say... statistics are part of my daily job, so the numbers speak to me.

look, I\'m not calling you a ... gaff... whatever that is.  I\'m just saying, if you don\'t live in Bridgeport, or if you\'re from (say) Fairfield and you only hit up very specific parts of Bpt, by jumping off 95 and driving right to your location, you really have no idea that 90% of Bpt is a really ugly ghetto.

i owned a home in bridgeport for 18 years and i\'ve worked for the city for over 21 years. my wife was born and raised here. now that i\'ve established my credibilty......"you really have no idea that 90% of Bpt is a really ugly ghetto."

this statement is completely false, derogatory and plain stereotyping.....IMHO.

for what it\'s worth.....i really have no particular love for bridgport and could live my life never seeing it again.....but let\'s be real. anyway.....i\'m gonna spend saturday night in tampa having dinner with joe girardi so i should be safe at least.

Now that is hell on earth:

Quote
East St. Louis has one of the highest crime rates in the United States. According to FBI\'s data of 2006, its murder rate hit 83.8 per population of 100,000, surpassing that of cities such as Compton, California (40.4 per pop. 100,000), Gary, Indiana (48.3 per pop. 100,000), New Orleans, Louisiana (37.6 per pop. 100,000), Richmond, Virginia (38.8), Baltimore, Maryland (43.3), Camden, New Jersey (40.0), Detroit, Michigan (47.3), and Washington, D.C. (29.1), as well as that of its neighbor St. Louis (37.2). FBI data also shows East St. Louis\' high rate of rape, which exceeded 250 per population of 100,000.

AOL Money\'s opinion on worst states to live:  http://money.aol.com/mortgage/most-dangerous-states

With CT being number 11 on the safest states, it\'s got me thinking that I\'ve got a slightly twisted view of Bpt.  Since it\'s the worst in an otherwise safe state... maybe it just looks extra bad to me.

On average a person is murdered every other week (\'06 numbers... somehow with the current state of the economy, i doubt those numbers are shrinking) in Bridgeport.  They have the highest murder and violent crime rates in the state.

Pride in your hometown is admirable, and yes there are a couple nice neighborhoods there, but come on Duane, give me a break.  Let\'s talk about the neighborhood that The Field is in.  Tell me, how many miles from the fairfield border is it?  Yet, if you walk a couple miles in the other direction and it\'s nothing but Pawn shops, Rub\'n\'tugs, and liquor stores.

there are multi-million (yes....multi) dollar homes within a mile the field (in Bpt). the neighborhood from the back of the field to the shore is an extremely nice family area that you obviously know little about. while fairfield ave has a couple of massage parlors (2 if i\'m not mistaken) and a couple of liquor stores (also 2 if i\'m not mistaken) and i don\'t believe there is a pawn shop over there. sure it gets sketchy down near the highway due to the pt barnum housing project but if you think black rock is a "ghetto" you\'ve led a very sheltered life or you\'ve never really been there. there are many people with the means to get out, but they choose to live there and love it. i\'m not saying bpt is a great city or a nice place to live in general but please stop trying to justify your statement. it simply isn\'t true. using this logic, you would have to say that 90% of manhatten is a ghetto. i don\'t think that every person who actually lives there feels that way. once again.....IMHO.

"On average a person is murdered every other week (\'06 numbers... somehow with the current state of the economy, i doubt those numbers are shrinking) in Bridgeport. They have the highest murder and violent crime rates in the state."

all true. it also has the largest population in the state and likely the largest impovershed population as well. there are bad places and really bad places. i can show you those as well. notice though....since the housing market skyrocketed in fairfield county, new haven and waterbury have been receiving a steady stream of section 8 type housing people from bridgeport due to rising property values. those cities are getting worse while Bpt isn\'t near the wild west show that it used to be. not even close. the "ghetto" in new haven is growing daily and the panhandling is far worse than in Bpt. the place sucks....that\'s for sure, but to arbitrarily bash it with ludicrous(IMHO) statements is false. it also cain\'t help with promoting the show. just sayin.......

Duane, I am fully aware of the St. Mary by the Sea section of Bpt.  I have spent plenty of time in the different sections of that city.  But you\'re talking about small pockets of left over opulence that over time will disappear.

Very similar to the Hilltop section of Waterbury.  You have these pseudo mansions that were built at the turn of the century by kings of the brass manufacturing industry.  These neighborhoods shrink over time, just like St. Mary\'s has and will continue to.  Soon those monster houses will probably belong to law firms and used as offices while the surrounding area deteriorates like the rest of Bridgeport has.

When your city is 78 sq. miles and 400k people, I could see some huge diversity in the quality of the neighborhoods.

Bridgeport is like 19 sq miles and 139K people.  Were talking 2 maybe 3 nice neighborhoods.

When you compare it to the surrounding towns of Fairfield, Trumbull and Stratford in which the majority if not all neighborhoods are great then consider that its got the highest per capita crime rate in the state, I don\'t think I\'m completely off my rocker to call it a shit hole.

jeez billy....have you been to the south end of your home town. like many parts of bridgeport, i wouldn\'t call it nice but i wouldn\'t call it a "ghetto". you made a valid point originally and then followed it up with a rash statement that\'s simply not true. bridgeport does suck!....so does the south end of stratford!....but you\'re the one who said  "....if not all neighborhoods (in stratford) are great." i called you out on the 90% statement and i still say i\'m right. nice job on the show promotion though. just for the record YOU CAN PARK YOUR CAR AND WALK IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD OF THE FIELD AND FEEL SAFER THAN YOU DO AT MANY BREAKFAST VENUES. end of story.

Town of stratford has about 8 distinct neighborhoods, 2 of which I would not want to live in. I therefore consider Stratford a pretty darn good place to live.

City of Bridgeport has about 20 distinct neighborhoods,  of which I would not want to live in 17 of them.  I therefore consider Bridgeport a crappy garbage filled dump.

It\'s all about positives outweighing the negatives.

Lets say I was a weathy person, sure I could get this amazing house in Bridgeport for $3.5M

(http://www.raveis.com/CMLS_pix/98407612_1.jpg) (note:  this home is less then a quarter mile from The Field)

But would I really want to live in a town where the $52K/ year  I\'d be paying in taxes still wouldn\'t get me a decent public school to send my imaginary kids?!!

After reviewing the definition of Ghetto
Quote
Random House
1. a section of a city, esp. a thickly populated slum area, inhabited predominantly by members of an ethnic or other minority group, often as a result of social or economic restrictions, pressures, or hardships.
2. (formerly, in most European countries) a section of a city in which all Jews were required to live.
3. a section predominantly inhabited by Jews.
4. any mode of living, working, etc., that results from stereotyping or biased treatment: job ghettos for women; ghettos for the elderly.

I\'d like to clarify my classification of Bridgeport as primarily a slum
Quote
Random House
1. Often, slums. a thickly populated, run-down, squalid part of a city, inhabited by poor people.
2. any squalid, run-down place to live.

not a ghetto.

The way he has been bashing Bridgeport lately I would not be surprised to see him get jumped at the Field Friday night. You know how those Bridgeporter\'s read .info religiously.

not to mention, where could we possibly find an acceptable room anywhere in that slum? maybe across the line at the fairfield motor inn or just a quick run down to the stratford Hojo\'s would be better. i wouldn\'t want slim to be uncomfortable.

Duane\'s an 18 yr vet of that town, if he doesn\'t jump me himself I\'m sure he can track down some former neighbors to do the job.

Black Rock a very cool area - almost a college crowd kind of feel to it.  Plz don\'t forget that, less than a half mile from Toads is, IMHO, NOT a place that I\'d want to end up following a killer show - and I don\'t ever see anyone bashing New Haven when a Toad\'s show is posted on the board.  Bottom line - there are good and bad to just about any place you go - even Oahu!  Embrace the goodness, and don\'t be stupid!  Happy 30th, TPalms!
