Post by: davepeck on October 12, 2004, 01:34:42 pm
The band will be taking off for a quick mini-tour in November. Dates are starting to be added to the Calendar (http://www.thebreakfast.info/forum/calendar.php?s=&s=&menu=7). More dates will be added as they are confirmed.

Who\'s got my heady November 22nd show?  I\'m not missing The Breakfast on my 20th birthday if they\'re anywhere in the state.

What\'s up with Phil\'s Grill and Funk Box both on Friday 11/5? Are they taking the sausage express from one venue to the other?

Todd I am guessing that there will be some dates on that weekend that string to gether the shows alittle more conveniently.  From what I was told it was going to be a week and a half tour through the DERTY SOUTH!

Hell Yeah! I\'ll be there with several people in tow. I\'ve been putting the hard sell on everyone I know to come out to the gig at Smith\'s Olde Bar.  Tuesday can be a tough night to play but I am confident there will be a relatively high energy level that night.  Playing Smith\'s is a smart move - much better than the Brandyhouse which is only good on weekends - Smith\'s might be the only venue in ATL with a consistent crowd on weekdays. As for Athens the next monday, Last Call is also a great venue.  The hotness of the chicks at that place is unreal.

I must admit that I am a little concerned with the potenial "doozie factor" that accompanies playing a Tuesday night anywhere (Tuscaloosa is apparently the exception, as last time they played there was a Tuesday during exam week & the place was still bumpin\').  I should also have a decent size group with me... we will just have to pick up everyone else\'s slack...

Do bands always play upstairs there?  I hope so, as that is a cool room... pretty big place to fill on a Tuesday though....

Although doozies aren\'t what the band wants....There is something very special about attending a doozie, IMHO.

maybe, but I would trade the energy of a packed house for the intimacy of a doozie any day.

My 1st show was a dooz for sure w/ like 15 people in the hse. It was a spectacular show that was made better by the lack of audience thus affording myself the chance to help "inspire" them @ setbreak. It also seemed they were a bit relaxed as there was no pressure whatsoever to perform well and like the consummate pros they are that only helped them ROCK harder. I must say though singing along is alot better w/ others.

i usually prefer noone else there or around  when i attempt to sing, so doozies are better for that, and you can get away with doin something cheesy/risky...but the southern shows..although i am skeptical about them playin some of these shows down there due to doozie factor ..which diectly reltaes to band/crew confidence factor...i think the enjoyable warm weather and hospitable presence of some old friends like Marcial should make it a great time. would love to get another dose of some warm weather and watch Breakfast leave Florida more baffled than last elections.

The first show I saw in Atlanta was a doozie,  but the result was some sick covers, including a wicked Help on the Way>Slipknot (which transitioned seamlessly into a scorching LDZ) , and the night was capped off by a smokin Other One that featured Tim playing the guitar with his teeth at one point, and Seth Yac "chanelling Jerry" from beyond the grave in a ridiculous 15 minute guitar solo.  I guess when there\'s nobody there they\'re not afraid to get crazy with some experimental shit.

But Atlanta will not be a total doozie this time.  Smith\'s gets a consistent crowd even on weekdays and it is a small room, so even 20 people will be enough to keep the energy level up.

Oh yeah - the show will be upstairs.  The last show the Breakfast played there took place on an afternoon which killed the turnout.  The whole idea of the afternoon show was a woefully misbegotten idea that mercifully ended shortly after the Breakfast\'s radio show there.  But Smith\'s isn\'t that big - last time they pushed all the tables and chairs against the wall, making it look bigger than it really is - with all the tables set up it will seem smaller.

I think I\'ve got a pretty good crowd to represent in Virginia. All newbies but hopefully not a doozie!

Newbies are key, even if the show is a doozie.  Don\'t forget, my first show was a doozie, and so was Leith\'s first show, but we became lifelong fans.  What\'s better - one fan who will go to 10 shows a year or 10 fans who will go to one show a year? It\'s about the same. The Breakfast always brings it hard at these out of town shows because they know that even if there are only 10 people in the audience, one of them might be the next Leith or the next Ross Origen.

I think I will convince my Floridian aunt to go to the Fort Lauderdale show next week.  I think she could possibly get into it.  She used to rock in some bands back in the 70\'s.

for any of those that have pull or inside info....how about a wash. dc gig...nov 17, 18, and 19 are free...plenty of venues in the dc and northern va area....enough of the co-bill baltimore stuff.

Bring The Breakfast to the Nations Capital!

I feel bad for all of you situated beyond the Northeast (Leith, Marcial, demobug, origen).

Must be tough surviving on a diet of only a couple Breakfast shows per year.

The day is almost upon us - Smith\'s in the ATL 11/9. Granted it is frustrating waiting around for shows - I\'ve been passing the time by catching shows by Brothers Past, Lotus, New Monsoon, and a few local Atlanta hacks such as Mudcat and Green Light Council.  These other bands are very good but not as good as the Breakfast.  I am psyched for this Tues. and next Mon. in Athens - this is going to be sick! The long wait in between shows might even make it sicker.

They just need to go in with realistic expectations.  I think if we get 20 - 30 people in Smith\'s on a tues. you can\'t really say it\'s a doozie because that\'s the most you should expect on a tues. anyway.   But they will be hardcore fans.  Seth Shimon of shimon presents/ Jomo entertainment will be there, and he\'s a promoter who has over 500 people on his mailing list.  If he likes what he sees he can get you another dozen or so people in there next time just by sending out a mass mailing.  Also Vincent Tseng will be there, photographer and regular contributer to Jambands.com.  Also next mon. in Athens should be dope because I heard it\'s a free show and that\'s a good place to play, and they\'re coming off an opening gig for Umphrey\'s last time in Athens.

If you\'re sworn to secrecy, I think it would be the content of the secret, more than the originator of said secret, that is more important to keep under wraps. ;)

Sick show last night.  The Mooboo\'s jam was probably the #1 highlight - it is unbelievable how sick that jam can get in the middle of Mooboo\'s - way better than the studio version.  Also No Glove and What the Funk were awesome.  Drunk Monk and Escher\'s were also sick, as always.  For the full length review check out the review archive. See you in Athens! - Ross

Title: athens ga monday night
Post by: origen on November 16, 2004, 05:55:11 pm
Here\'s what went down: A ragged, road-weary band stumbles into Last Call in Athens Ga to play yet another gig at the tail end of a grueling, excruciating road trip, with not one day off between gigs.  The promoter at Last Call fails to post the show in the local newspaper, does not include the show on the marquis outside, and fails to put up a single poster inside the club, much less anywhere else around town.

But miraculously....people show up from out of nowhere.  It was a late-arriving crowd - most people rolled in around midnight - and you could tell that up till now the band members were not pleased with the poor effort on the part of the venue to promote this show.  To quote Adrian : "we\'re gonna play for 45 minutes and get the f--- outta here".  But then the people showed up.  Lets face it - you can\'t keep people away from a Breakfast show - you can try to keep it a secret - but they will find out.  Hell, you could install a minefield and razor wire and hire a Iraqi with explosives strapped to his chest to check ID\'s, and people will still come.

So was it a doozie? I would say no, because a doozy is not a show where you get only a few people - it\'s a show where you get fewer people than EXPECTED.  I expected 30-40 people and in reality there were about 40 people, at least 15 of whom were clustered around the stage and very into the music.  I think it was a key show because most people there came because they saw the Breakfast open for Umphrey\'s a few months ago, and they were very knowledgable fans who found out about the show only via Jambase.

As for the setlist, the highlights included, a wicked Puppetry, a sick Rufus, Drunk Monk, Wild Pack of Asscracks, and an epic Beef Barley that had a super extended jam in the middle of it, that almost sounded like a whole nother song, in which Tim went nuts on guitar, and then went back into Beef Barley.  Overall the music was superior, and everyone in attendance was very impressed, and those I talked to vowed to come back next time the Breakfast comes to town.

Granted, the band members appeared to be strung out from their tour, with frayed nerves, psychological fatigue, and little patience left to deal with a doozy show in which they were corn-holed with a broken broomstick by local promoters.  But in spite of all these factors working against them, they drew a decent number of hardcore fans and delivered a killer show with some ridiculous jams.  The Breakfast will not be denied.  They will succeed - not because they are lucky and have good connections - THEY WILL SUCCEED IN SPITE OF THE FACT THAT THEY ARE NOT ALWAYS LUCKY AND DO NOT HAVE ALL THE BEST CONNECTIONS.  That shows just how talented and determined they are, and that they have what it takes to make it in this business.
