Post by: FieryBill on August 12, 2007, 08:44:14 pm
I: Jam* > The Chase, Honey Butter, Rufus* > Tricky Ways, Intension

*Short Jam - Matt started it out solo for a minute or two, turned into a "Space City Affair" type jam, into the Chase organ intro
**Psygn Jam, Star Wars Tease

Matt sounded awesome.... I\'m so pumped for future shows! They sounded great. Did I mention it was free? All I heard all weekend from the Vibes people was that it would be a $70 fee at the door. So much for that! Oh... and the show was in Bridgeport, CT, not Norwalk, CT. The vibes website had a Norwalk address at the bottom of the page so I assumed that was where it was at.... but I eventually found the place and arrived at 3:43.... and they started at 3:48....like clockwork baby. Breakfast on the beach.... a beautiful thing :)

I\'d write more but i\'m exhausted...... have a great week peeps. Matt... great debut my friend, you looked like you were having a blast up there! Peace

nice little review... we followed duanes advice and it worked out pretty well, although we probably could have finagled closer parking if we tried hard... anyhoo, matt did sound great. definitely fit in very well, with some definite peak moments.  these solar things never seem to work out perfect soundwise (a few kinks in the system i suppose) but the band was tight as hell.

i must thank duane for the advice post-show as well.  me and my buddy geoff got into the main stage with a little duane advice, a lucky alcohol bracelet, and a lazy vibes security man.  Buddy guy is definitely a legend, and was definitely a treat, held out one of the longest notes i\'ve ever witnessed, taking a sip of what might have been coffee or tea during it.

all in all, a very fun sunday afternoon with barely a dent on the old wallet.  Definitely pumped for camp this weekend. what a great time to be a breakfast fan

oh and duane, you should have told me you play bass for Los Lobos, i would have checked you guys out years ago!

an absolutely gorgeous day, seaside park is definitely a really chill and beautiful place, even for bridgeport ;)

the band was definitely tight and confident today, matt sounded sooo good from the first note.  i think this was one of the few times in the past year that i\'ve really liked "the chase" . . . . how i\'ve missed those keys!

all in all i thought it was a good show, would have liked to tweak the setlist a bit but  hey, they only had an hour and they brought it. crowd turnout was pretty respectable for the free stage, last day, last act. i\'m bad at estimates but i\'d say there was 150+? help me out folks!

thanks to duane for the entrance tips as well... c l u t c h !!!

sidenote: todd & robyn - props for your headie underground merch table movement. it\'s nice to hear tpalms invite everyone to the merch table after the show again.

My afternoon was like a movie montage...

Driving through the streets of Bridgeport following little Vibes signs...
Sneaking past the sleeping parking lot guy...
Getting out of the car at 4ish and hearing Rufus (we broke into a run)...
Running into Caitlyn\'s family who told us we\'d get turned away at the "door" (intersection)...
Sneaking past the security guys behind SUVs who were being turned away...
Seeing the crowd totally jamming while the band played on...
And my first impression of Matt is that Star Wars tease.

My first thought?
"Aw yeah, this is gonna be fun."

I can\'t go to Bisco, but I\'ll be at Toad\'s...I got those little tickets to pass out, too.  Woo-hoo!

then........ walking down the beach to try to hear a little of Buddy Guy but just happened to wander our way in,no bands on and  a "its to late just let\'em in".(thanks Mr.Security guy!)Cool!:thumbsup:What a great time.:)

great to hear the chase again with some organ...it\'s just not itself without one

honeybutter was average

rufus was nice...they got a nice dancey beat going during the second jam and i thought they were about to take it to the next level so matt could really spread his wings but it didn\'t happen

tricky ways...standard

intension...probably my highlight of the set...this song rocks and ron was tearing it up (as he did all show long)

timmy and ron were on fire for the show. matt was kind of tough to hear at some points, but that\'s to be expected...they did show a lot of potential though...psyched for camp (and toad\'s)

Just a little FYI: That is the new intro to the chase.  It was not a jam, but the way it will be played from now on.  And, no it wasn\'t taped.  Sorry.

The beginning of the Chase sounded a little classic (i.e. Phantom of the Opera).

The show was indeed taped via soundboard by one of the kids doing the soundboard. DW spoke with him after the show and plans on releasing it as long as the band is interested in doing so.

This show was nice. Hot sun, on the beach, strolling through Bridgeport. Good times. Just started heating up with Intension and the show ended. Can\'t wait to see how they are at Toad\'s when they can really open up.

Matt looks like he has a few tricks up his sleeve and broke out a little on his Yamaha Motif X57. Nice.

Holy shit I am alive!

GOTV2007 = Best Festival Ever --- best vacation ever --- -best time of my life!

Now I really have no idea what to do with the rest of my life. I might just crawl into a  hole with an alarm clock set for next years Vibes.

Anyway.... it was fun to see Breakfast again tho I was BEAT and BRAINDEAD by that point in the weekend I saw a few of you guys, I\'m not gonna lie, but I spent most of the show sitting in some shade across the road.

Matt sounded great for The Chase. Tim\'s guitar work in Honey Butter was some of the best I\'ve ever seen... in fact that may be my fav. Honeybutter to date. After that I had mixed feelings though. I found the keyboards in Rufus to make the song worse, not better. And then Tricky Ways was wasted time and Intension was played well especially Ron\'s sick bass rock-out but that song wasn\'t enough to get me back on my weary feet and go back to the sand.

Best shows of the weekend:
George Clinton and P-Funk ....... and Bob Weir and Ratdog

Anyway I\'ll def go see Breakfast again ;) .... I was kind of hoping Matt could add more ambiance to the band but as it seems he is more of a "lead keyboard" player.... ummmm.... well he was just too loud for me I could hear the keys way louder than the other instruments I hope they work that out somehow.

I think I\'m still feelin that white on white...

You can not use this festival show as an indication of sound. They were using the festivals equipment, everything was back lined. Toad\'s Place will be the real test of what this quartet is capable of. Sure, its great to seem them at some festivals but an hour time slot is not enough time for them to open up and explore nor is it any indication of what they are going to sound like in a roof. There is promise from yesterdays show.

It\'s ridiculous how some people could find fault with and over review a set where a new member makes his debut, but then with some of the things I\'ve seen these fans say, I\'m not surprised.  The Chase was finally it\'s old self again, with some really nice piano fills throughout might I add, and it made me smile a bit.  Honey Butter is one of their best songs, big fuckin\' deal that it didn\'t "own" anyone ever heard of adjusting or taking time to see where to best fit into a song bascially perfected by a trio, whatever.  I do have one small complaint and it probably isn\'t really a complaint in the traditional sense but, maybe not play Rufus every show, just a thought, yes I understand that it probably was used to build energy and to act as practice for Matt to get more used to the Breakfast style, I guess, even though he has played with them before, but to call it standard, yeah I guess it may have been to some but who cares.  Tricky ways never really did it for me ever, but maybe Matt can add some new or different personality to it.  Intension was fuckin\' crazy, sometimes it\'s a goddamn shame that it has to even end at all after it builds and builds to a frenzy.  Overall, great time and worth the couple miles we had to walk, thanks to peaches, lexington (whose name I don\'t know) and sallyalli and your friend for being there at the exact right time, cuz after a really looooooooong hot ass walk and being told by security guy that the band "lied to you guys" when I was told it was free, I kinda almost freaked a little, so thanks again, cuz we couldn\'t have shown up more perfectly timed, good shit guys!  Can\'t wait to see a full 2 set show and I\'m really looking forward to what the future hold for this wonderful band.

For the record Honey Butter ruled and was by far the best part of the show. Normally I don\'t even like this song that much.

Where do I begin? Crowd was by far the the biggest turnout I saw all day in the Free Solar Stage. I like the new keyboard intro to The Chase, sounds a little dark and eirie ala Eddie Palmieri improvisation. Unfortunately, there where some technical sound issues beyond Matts control during the rest of The Chase which made the keyboards sound really loud and distorted. Problem got fixed at the end of the song, but my right ear was a little deaf for the remainder of the show. Seeing that this was Matt\'s debut as the new member of The Breakfast, I like the energy and vibe that he brings to the table on and off the stage. I\'m definitely looking forward to Toad\'s on the 23rd and getting a longer dose of the new B\'fast quartet.

A wise man once told me that your state of mind at a show is often more important than the state of the music. It\'s hard to be brought to your feet by anything at all after a few days of brain-fry.

Over the years I have realized how little attention people pay to sound quality (in general) and their position in the crowd which drastically changes their \'filter\' for the music. There are times I\'m content staying in one spot, but most often I\'m relentless in finding that glorious window where your ears feel hooked up with every member in the band. It\'s like listening to a shitty recording of Over Exposure in a Chevy Tracker when BAM! you\'re suddenly in the middle of a Bose showroom with Moxie Epoxy\'s version pumping from every felt covered box of magic. That moment when all is heard is like Campbell\'s Soup for an 8-year old on a frozen February evening.

I\'m licking my chops for their Chicago arrival.

GREAT SET!!!! i can\'t wait for more. i was right up front and heard nothing as far as bad sound except when i walked over to the left of the stage and a weird cracking was coming from the left speaker but i think Chandwick figured it out after a couple minutes. I mean the speakers were sitting in the HOT sun all weekend and i think they were definitely feeling the heat. i was expecting another speak disaster like UAC3

I was only there from the beginning thru the start of intension before I bailed.

I really thought Matts playing added some maturity to the sound As well as a touch of class. Not that the bfast never had class but he added a classical feel to some of his playing and I really liked his stage presence. He certainly gives you something to watch and he brings a stage energy that the bfast never really seemed to have.

I watched from behind the stage because i\'m about as white as can be and the sun was seriously kicking my ass. But it gave me a great view of Adrian and Matt. Regardless of the set it is always a huge pleasure to walk in to a show and immediately be greeted by the bfast family. We may all have our differences of opinions and we may have differing aspirations but I felt immediately at home and it was a much needed pick me up to a long week in Bridgeport.

Yeah...I definitely did!  If Brandon didn\'t suggest we go to the back of the stage where there was shade I probably would have had to go home, I was pretty close to passing out...  Anyway, I like Matt already, he fits in with the band really well, I have no problem with anything they did at the Vibes, it was great for just an hour long set!  Can\'t wait for Toad\'s Place! :D

it\'s all good, mike, but it has been a damn while, hasn\'t it? hopefully with more shows popping up on the schedule, it will happen sooner rather than later..

there was just no way i was making it out of the house on sunday..

I saw Joe Mango who was working that stage with connor (sp) and he said there was no place to setup except in the sand. I was like I don\'t think I want to do that. He said that we should be able to get his 2 track board recording tho. I will see whats up with that in a few days or so

it was funny shit to see mr, ostreicher stretching before the set, getting amped up..
  <<<< no complaints here.
<<<< convinced there was either a Journey/Styx tease of some sort during the Rufus jam

from jambands.com blurb : "The festival’s final day, Sunday, opened with a unique set of jazz music led by festival promoter Ken Hays brother Kevin, an accomplished pianist whose ensemble featured trumpeter Nicholas Payton, drummer Bill Stewart, bassist Doug Weiss, guitarist Peter Bernstein, vocalist Hilary Smith and saxophonist Joshua Redman. The rest of the day featured an eclectic mix of music, including Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Martin Sexton, the Wailers, the Breakfast and Buddy Guy, who paid tribute to both Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix during his performance. Los Lobos closed the weekend with an enjoyable show that nodded to Sublime and Jerry Garcia and explored the group’s own eclectic canon."  any mention is good on this site..

I\'m licking my chops for their Chicago arrival.

i\'d like to nominate for post of the year

hey, you\'re free to have your opinions, i\'m not gonna disagree w/ them.  but i know this isn\'t the first time i\'ve seen you mention this.  along w/ your multiple times comparing the shows scheduled for this summer against the shows cancelled.  it just seems to me that you get a kick out of degrading the efforts of the band who\'s fan website you manage.

i\'m not gonna bother getting into your knowledge of superior sound technology, cuz thats neither here nor there.  i just assumed a setlist thread from a band who is debuting a new member is a time to discuss the future of the breakfast and our excitement for it, and not dwell on the things in the past that we think could\'ve been a little bit better.

bingo.

they are all about marketing fairly expensive audio products to unsuspecting folks.

the older stuff like the Bose 901\'s etc were pretty decent speakers but they have done anything like that in a long time

The show was not taped by any audience members.

I spoke to derickw after the show and he mentioned that one of the guys on the Vibes soundboard had patched in and was going to ask the band for permission to make the show available. I do not know if it ever will be.

Great article on BLOWS, I mean BOSE. I\'ll slip in an edit on my original post in three months when all is forgotten. Anyways, glad I\'ve never purchased any equipment from Bose. It was always too pricey and actually now thinking about it I have NEVER appreciated Bose systems in cars. I can\'t tell you how many times I\'ve been told to "buckle up and get ready for this sound biatch!" and just affably bob my head with a smile without any feeling of being floored. I bought a Logitech set for my computer for $130 and tunes sound just lovely.

Thanks for the info. here on .info, I\'ll never be a Bose-consumer-sucker.

Post by: Matt o on August 17, 2007, 02:19:01 am
This first show was a whirlwind for me.  keyboards that I never played before at awkward heights, getting used to playing standing up, realizing that these guys do alot of spontaneous stuff on stage.  Basically, I had no idea what i was doing.  I got alot of learning to do.  Got some new gear (Hammond XK organ, Yamaha Motif).  I\'m gonna end up with 5 or 6 keyboards up there.  Maybe some other kinds of toys also(punching bags, newspapers, radios, video games, etc).   In the first press photo for the band I am kinda hanging back.  This is because in the first (about 6) months I will be learning the tunes and basically try to keep up with these guys.  After that I will start bringing more of my tunes and vocals and general craziness in the mix.   Lots of new sounds/stories in the works.   So (I)we may sound a little sloppy in the beginning but soon enough well have lots of ambience, intense jams, video stuff, new tunes, sit-ins, more unexpected stuff, and who knows what else.  It was so great to see everybody there on the beach.  I am really looking forward to connecting with everybody musically and otherwise.  I am so lucky to have stumbled into this incredible band and community!  Ok, I better get back to practicing the Bisco set.

P.S. we had a little jam in Brooklyn last night at Studio B for the after party of the Disco Biscuits and Umphrey\'s show.  I got to jam with the drummer from the Disco Biscuits and the keyboardist from U-Melt.  They were great!  I also played with a group called BioDiesel(live electronica/ drum n bass stuff).  They were quite amazing.   so much music to check out!  see you at Bisco!

i used to work for bose.

they\'re not HORRIBLE but they are RIDICULOUSLY overpriced.  their target audience is 30-40+ professionals not audiophiles.

they\'re honestly worth about 50% of what they charge.

kind of like designer purses/clothing where you pay for the name.

i worked for over a year on the newer lifestyle systems.  what a piece of shit that thing was.  looked nice though.  and people bought it cause of the name.

their marketing budget is obscene.

I look forward to being awestruck by Oestreicher!

I\'m licking my chops for their Chicago arrival.

i\'d like to nominate for post of the year

 I\'d like to nominate for best thread derailment of the year! ;)

For some reason I didn\'t think Ratdog was on the archive.  Now I can grab the set they played at GG Park a few months ago.

I heard the Pfunk set was ser and the Les set was awesome with Les coming out by himself for like the first 1/2 hour or so and then being joined by the rest of the band one member at a time.

Les was fucked IMO. I almost couldn\'t handle that shit at the time. I think he was just fucking with the crowd for the first hour or so, until finally his band came out and they started to make something resembling music.

So many acid heads were evacuating the field during the beginning of Les because that shit was chaotic in a not really musical way.

ive definitely seen some horrible Les sets and some really solid ones. High Sierra main stage a few years back was horrible and, like you said tuna, "chaotic in a not really musical way."
