Title: 56-26 LAKERS - The Mighty Purple & Gold!
Post by: leith on December 10, 2003, 02:09:52 am
1/4 way through the season and the Lakers have the best record in the league. Hitting on all cylinders even winning games w/ the bench. Thing is they think they can get better and they are right. With a little more focusing on defense and this team is unstoppable. 10 in a row and 27 straight wins @ home 3 more and we tie the Franchise record. Oh yeah so far this season San Antonio 0 L.A. 3 Fcuk Texas

Get your Lakers \'cross the nation Slam Dunk Sensation

P.S. USC is # 1 in both polls and do not play for the Championship ? What up w/ that ?

caught the 4th quarter on replay when i woke up this morning.. they\'re such a different team now.. no more 30+ ppg from shaq/kobe... they\'re actually a team, and they really play as one.. great chemistry, and they\'re damn fun to watch...

bring on the mavs... i\'ll be staying up for that one friday night..

This year, I\'m sad to say, the BCS ALMOST did a good job.  LSU and Oklahoma both deserve to be in the National Championship game.  Sadly, the BCS takes no consideration as to WHEN a team\'s losses occur.

What we (fans who think the BCS should be abolished) need is for a mid-major team (like BYU almost did last year) to go undefeated at not get in, then there is no doubt that the BCS is a failure.

But anyway, Lakers.  Yeah.  Do they still have Kareem Abdul-Jabaar? :) I don\'t really follow the NBA, but on paper it looks like the Lakers are too much better than everybody else to be fun to watch/cheer for.

I don\'t follow b-ball, but it seems to me that the Lakers are an All-Star team and there is no one who will be able to beat them in the end.

Hey Drew when Chicago and his "airness" were taking everyone down. No one complained then abt it being no fun to watch because "da bulls " were winning. Watch a few games u will see true basketball flash and all. This team is fun to watch. Triangle ?we don\'t need no stinkin\' triangle. Just GP up the gut fast break, pull up pass to Shaq on the inside IT\'S OVER .

Oh Drew when USC stomps Michigan and then LSU blows it \'gainst OK. We will see who "deserved" to play that game ;)

First, on the Lakers. They\'re tremendous. We know this. A fourth title in five seasons is a mere formality. And you\'re right: the bench, led by Fisher, Grant, Russell, and Medvedenko, is playing well. Oh yeah, the starters are slightly above-average too.

Now on to the BCS. Here\'s how you solve it. Take the top 12 teams in the BCS following the conference championship games and have them play a tournament. Give the top four teams first-round byes and give home-field advantage to the higher seed, with the exception of the championship, which is played at a neutral site on the Sunday during the week off before the Super Bowl. There will be 11 games for this tournament. Give them the same names as the (meaningless) bowl games that precede the current championship. Then take the No. 13 through 24 teams in the BCS and have them play a sort of NIT tournament with the same parameters as the big one. That\'s an additional 11 games. That\'s 22 playoff/bowl games, all of which will be of much greater interest since they\'ll mean something and because it was decided fairly. This format combines the logic of the NFL and NCAA hoops, two much more effective systems. It will never happen. They\'ll eventually do a Final Four thing, which is better than what they do now, but considering that they\'re are about 120 Division I-A college football teams, I think 12 is the perfect number because it incorporates the first-round bye, which will give more motivation to teams that have already clinched their spot, plus motivation to all the decent teams who are just trying to squeak in. The fans win. The players win. The corporate suits win. Everybody wins. It makes sense. That\'s why it will never happen.

For the record, Southern California got rooked. They deserve a shot in the title game. Matt Leinhart deserves serious Heisman consideration. Mike Williams will be a Pro Bowl wide receiver in the NFL. Did anybody see his one-handed catch against Oregon State?

Pitch

Oh yeah, one last thing: They be smiling in Houston today. In the last week, The Astros got themselves a pitcher and the Bronx Bambinos re-signed David Wells, a (lard-infested) belly itcher. Mark my words everybody: the Mets WILL finish in fourth place next season. Mark it down.

Oh Baby!

I agree it is a Travesty that a year after Carson won Matt has a year w/  better numbers than Carson and does not even get a sniff @ the Heisman. Oh that catch ? Ingrained in my memory 4ever. So Sweet. Whoever lands that guy in the NFL has it going on for a deep threat, over the middle, blocker.... Williams rox!!

Celts can bite my ass. When is the last time that decrepit franchise put 3 much less 5 decent players on the court. The Celtics suck ass. If there was ever a franchise that sucked ass it would be the Celtics. If they even get to the playoffs it will be because the Eastern Conference on a whole sucks ass. BTW did I mention the celtics suck ass ?

Props though Gfunk for postin\' that on a Laker thread but your team sucks ass.

Dude I was just thinking of starting a new thread. LAKERS Suck. Let everyone jump on it, then when our boys get healthy and start kickin\'ass and takin\' names @ the end of the season we can dog all of the hosers. Then they lost to the Clippers and I realized that i would be posting on that thread :) When the guys that get hurt are the 2 BIG guys ( center and power forward ) every team is gonna push up the middle. Slava ain\'t gonna stop anyone. No worries though better than last year so far so Chill Bra:)

Kobe gets to play because he lives in the USA. Here on the Best Coast we do not sentence someone until they have gone to Trial. Ever heard of Innocent until PROVEN Guilty dumbass. Yeah he fucked that slut but he says it was consensual.  I am inclined to believe him as this chick has a history of doing this shit. That is why I believe the laws should be changed to protect both parties not just the women. They want equal rights lets give it to them. Hiding the chicks history is so unfair to Kobe it seems illegal but it is not because the law "protects\' the woman. Total BS No law against cheating on your wife. It is a slimeball thing to do but not illegal. As for being a role model to kids, most kids just like his skills and attitude toward the game. If you want Children discussing sex and rape i feel sorry for any children you rear.

Wilt Chamberlain slept with 10,000 girls as a Laker in the 60\'s, and it\'s all good.

Magic slept with a bunch of ladies as a Laker in the 80\'s and got HIV.

Kobe sleeps with some girls as a Laker in the 00\'s and gets accused of rape.

Nice win last night. Mr. Williams played his first game of the season. 2 pts in 8 minutes but just being out there was a boost to the team. Shaqalicious and Jellybean Jr. both played about 1/2 the game but just having everyone out there was great. Fish was the man. He got this one pass off a steal by I think Kareem Rush and going up he was fouled but he fought threw that shit for an and1 (which he made). Poor Karl he will be out until mid-march. Bummer! We need his big redneck ass out there.

Which brings me to my point. We are 27-15 with all the losing and injury we are 27-15!!!!
Still solidly the 3rd seed and only 3 1/2 behind the Queens. We get Minn. the current 2nd seed tomorrow. I think we will have a better sense of where this team is after we send KG home acryin\'.
I guess I should be used to this team\'s January slump. It happens every year it seems and it is sooooo frustrating. Here\'s to Feburary being better.

Clearly, the worst is behind the Lakers. They\'ve survived the injuries. The return of O\'Neal and Fox officially begins the pursuit of home-court in the West. Stay within a few games of the Kings by the time Malone returns and steal the top seed in the last month. Go on ESPN.com and check out what the Jazz did to Malone and Bryant when the Lakers visited, and defeated, Utah last week.

The Los Angeles Lakers have an estimated $447 million value, according to Forbes, making the team the most valuable in the NBA.
No wonder Dr. Buss is throwing down big cash on Poker. Anyone else seen him playing on ESPN? It\'s a trip.

He better be ready to throw a bunch of that $$$$$ @ Kobe come the end of the season. As long as Kobe can still sign a contract ya know?

Karl Malone Livid at Utah Jazz Officials

LOS ANGELES, Jan 29 (AFP) - Los Angeles Lakers star Karl Malone vowed to "never, ever forgive" his former club Utah Jazz after a comedy skit which mocked both him and Lakers team-mate Kobe Bryant, the Los Angeles Times reported.

The controversial skit painted Malone as being homesick and poked fun at Bryant, who is free on bail after being charged last year with raping a female employee of a Colorado hotel.

"Some of the guys in that front office are cowards. Now that we\'re talking about it, that\'s the reason I\'m not there," said Malone, who played 18 years in Utah before joining the Lakers this season.

Malone told the newspaper he would not accept an apology from Jazz owner Larry Miller who took part in Saturday\'s skit during a timeout.

It involved the Utah mascot pretending to receive a telephone call in which Malone said: "They (Lakers) are mean to me they don\'t give me the ball.

"I guess it could be worse. I could be (Kobe Bryant)."

Later in the same National Basketball Association game, Miller joined in, taking a make-believe call at his courtside seat in a repeat performance.

"That was no class from that organization," Malone said. "After 18 years, for them to stoop to that level is no class. It\'s something I\'ll never forget.

"They don\'t know (Bryant). This is a great kid. That\'s disrespectful. I\'ll never, ever forgive them for that. Never in my life."

Malone compared his situation to that of American baseball superstar Roger Clemens who left the Boston Red Sox organization with bitter feelings.

"I know the chain of command there, and for somebody to pull a stunt like that, it has to be approved by the front office," Malone said. "For Larry to be involved in the skit ... I would never do that."

The Lakers next game against the Jazz is March 8 in Salt Lake City.

Just when you think things are settling down...

Bryant\'s out a week with a cut finger (moving boxes in the garage?), and the Timberwolves, the other team between the Lakers and Kings in the standings, rally from down double-digits to beat the Fast Breakers. Tough week on the road upcoming with a game at Lebron. Bottom line: Shaq needs to step up and start going 25-10 every night or they\'re going to be boarding a jet for Games 1 and 2 of the first round (again).

Also, the Jazz organization is simply thankless and classless. They should show tribute to Malone. They\'re complete jerks for mentioning Bryant.

Here\'s an obvious thought that I will state merely for the fact of official documentation among us fans: Considering that Los Angeles didn\'t win it last season, combined with the Bryant legal turmoil and Malone\'s desperation to finally be a champion and stick it to the Jazz, the Lakers almost have to win the title this season. It will be a major disappointment if they don\'t. One of the greatest underachievements of all-time.

First, the absolutely brutal West. Then, the winner of the CBA in the finals.

Gut feeling? Lakers sweep the Knicks in the finals.

Actuality: They beat the Pistons in six.

Nice Post Pitch. We all knew going into this year that this team was built to win it all and if not it would be a huge embarrassment to the Franchise. What I do not think anyone realized is the pressure that this put upon the Team. Not just the Fab 4 but the bench knew they would have to step up even bigger when the Fab 4 were not on the floor. I think they are doing very well when considering this angle.

It does suck to have Kobe out AGAIN. This team has too much talent to let it slip away. Even last year w/ all the crap we still made a good run @ it. Phil will figure out which group can give us the best chance and run w/ it. The T-Wolves got lucky last nite,Freakin\' great move gettin\' Spre. He could be dangerous in the playoffs.

:hscratch: huh? kobe\'s been out... on the injured list with a cut finger..

anyways, the game was pretty pathetic. granted they were seriously hurtin, but man... i\'m just glad they got it over 70 (all-time laker low for a game).. shaq\'s gotta do better than 2/15 from the line, and payton has to learn to shut his mouth.

but what\'s bullshit is that the ref who T\'d up payton (joe crawford) isn\'t even the ref that payton was mouthing off at.. they made a good point on the air last night - these ref\'s are grown men. if the ref payton was arguing with had a problem with him, let him take care of it, not joe crawford from the other side of the court. payton scroes the 30 he had the night before and the lakers win. period.

and i have to watch iverson, who i hate with a passion, run ALL over us... ugh.. i\'m ready to put this game behind, and looking forward to orlando on sunday.

oh, and throwback uniforms = :yack: (http://www.nba.com/media/lakers/fisher_170_040205.jpg)

Shaq scoreless for 25 minutes. That is being dominated. I thought it was just great. Maybe that fat fuck will realize he can no longer saunter through the league thinkin\' he\'s all that. I pray Yao beats him up everytime until that overpaid fatman decides to take back his title as the most dominant player in the NBA. As it stands I think Yao will keep getting better as Shaq fades away.

Way to go Lake Show!! Well it looks like Kobe and Shaq have decided since Karl is out and Gary keeps getting thrown out of games, to do it the old fashioned way. I admit barely beating Portland and Golden State is no big thing but taking it to AI and Co. tonight was just wonderful. Shaq seems to be getting his legs back and how about Luuuuuuuuuuke ?Bill\'s boy is coming along nicely. Bring on Phoenix Wed.

LOL I totally agree^^^^Yeah I gotta work. So I have to tape that game against the Queens. Not so much a must win as a game to test where they are. They did not have both Shaq and Kobe last time they played the Queens and Webber will be out  for this one so... It should be a good game though as Peja is pretty much ON FIRE. Damn that sux. San Antonio losing tonight helps us too :)

glad they came back to play late in the game last night.. they were makin\' me nervous.. got the W, but shaq was a non-factor for most of the game.. Jahidi White ended up being quite the match for shaq, not allowing him to get deep in the paint for most of the game.. good thing kobe picked up the slaq. how about that alley-oop-reverse-underhand-behind-the-backboard-layup to finish things off?! wow!

I\'m sick and was laying half-dead on the floor looking upside down at ESPN.com to get scoring updates while I watched Rockets-Cavs. It went from 100-91 to 100-98 to 109-104 to 112-111. Sick and all, I couldn\'t help but let out a hearty FUCK YEAH when I saw that it went final. Nice to know the Lakers have another Kareem who can hit clutch shots. Note that Walton and Rush were playing the key minutes instead of Grant and Fisher. Means nothing if they don\'t win tonight. The Kings have Webber and Bobby Jackson out with a questionable Brad Miller. No excuses. Last night was Bryant\'s night. Tonight is O\'Neal\'s. The season starts at 10:30. I struggled sleeping last night so today I\'m napping then watching.

Bryant hits a three that he has no right hitting to make it 103-101, then misses as good a look as he could have possibly had in the final seconds. But O\'Neal, and his poor free-throw shooting in the fourth quarter, cost the Lakers this game. He didn\'t have a field goal down the stretch, either. The Kings went completely cold for about 5 minutes mid-to-late fourth quarter and Los Angeles couldn\'t fully capitalize. Payton missed a relatively unopposed layup that would have given the Lakers a four-point lead shortly before Bibby nailed two three\'s. The Kings shot 12-of-23 from beyond the arc. They\'re too just talented to stay cold forever even though they were playing without 3 of their key players. The Lakers had to match them in the final minutes and couldn\'t. For some strange reason, Devean George played virtually the whole fourth quarter. See you in Sacramento for games one and two of the Western Conference Finals.

Associated Press
EL SEGUNDO, Calif. -- Kobe Bryant could be sidelined up to a month with a strained right shoulder, the same injury that sidelined the Lakers guard for six games this season.

"We tried to be optimistic, but it looks like he could be out for a while," Los Angles coach Phil Jackson said Saturday after practice.

"He was optimistic when he came in this morning, which is a very good sign," Jackson said. "He felt that he would be back in a few games, so he thought it was nothing like the last time when he had to sit out."

Bryant hurt the shoulder again when he was trying to fight through a pick and banged into Reggie Evans 54 seconds after tip-off in Friday\'s 99-91 victory over Seattle.

Bryant, the Lakers\' leading scorer at 22.4 points a game, had surgery on the shoulder in the offseason to repair torn tissue. This time, he left the arena after he was hurt and went to a hospital for an MRI. Dr. Steve Lombardo diagnosed the injury as a sprained acromio-clavicular joint.

Bryant\'s injury comes as Karl Malone is close to returning after being on the injured list for the first time in his career. Malone has been out since Dec. 21 with a torn ligament in his right knee.

DAMN!!!!!!!!!! Just when things get rolling again.

The best part about Bryant\'s injury, and the fact that he was supposedly out a month, is that nobody from the Lakers ever said that. Jackson said, "It looks like he\'ll be out a while" and that was the closest anyone came to specualting about the time-frame for his abscence. Typical media fabrication. Just needed a pseudo-controversial Lakers headline for the week. I mean, how is Kobe Bryant going to miss a month with a strained shoulder when the Lakers have are battling for home court? No way. Lakers win. Malone\'s back. Beat Minnesota twice. Get the two seed.

On a side note, the Celtics and the Knicks are going to have a fun battle for bottom of the CBA bracket. My guess: Knicks get in. Celts out.

Wolf who can hold our money? I bet you $20 Lakers beat either Dallas or the Queens. You\'re just another Hater.  Did you even see this team before injuries ? 18-3 playing as a unit not even using  the Triangle. So do not give me that guff. You do not watch this team so how can you even talk about their team chemistry? I wish u followed the NBA as a real fan and not just a hater. You would realize that Kobe is the all around best player to build your team around. There is ONLY 3 Players I would want to take the last second shot for a win. 2 of them do not play anymore(West, Jordan) the other is Kobe. So the team name doesn\'t make any sense now, it is all about continuity besides u were not even thought about when they moved. So go moan about something else. I enjoy most of your posts but when u just hate it is so ridiculous.

BTW Kobe is a US citizen entitled to being presumed INNOCENT UNTIL PROVEN GUILTY.

Sacramento maybe, but Dallas? C\'mon Seth. No defense. No chance. Don Nelson is not going to win a postseason series over Phil Jackson. What about the Spurs? You know, the defending NBA champs. I mean, I think the Lakers will win the whole thing, but if anybody is going to beat them, it would be the Kings, Spurs or Timberwolves. The Mavericks are the worst defensive team in the league. Well, maybe the second worst.

As someone who has followed Kobe\'s career from the moment he joined the Lakers, believe me his last second shot percentage is better than you think. Anyway who would you rather have take the shot. I would pit Kobe VS ANYONE in the league w/ the pressure of a win or loss to make the shot. He is that talented. Remember last year 9 40 point games in a row. Last person to do that? Jordan. Before him? Wilt. Come on now Kobe is the player you want taking that shot.

Finally, the Lakers earned a convincing win against a legitimate title contender. Balanced offense. Medvedenko was key during the 25-1 first-quarter run after Malone\'s two quick fouls, one of which was bullshit. Bryant\'s best game of the season. Shaq\'s on fire. Payton with 20. Kings can\'t defend and can\'t board. Timberwolves lose again. Have to beat them Friday. One seed within reach.

Bryant guided the Lakers to a 3-0 week, averaging a stellar 35.0 points, 7.0 rebounds and 5.0 assists in wins over Sacramento, Minnesota and Utah. He posted 36 points in 37 minutes in the Lakers 115-91 rout of the Western Conference-leading Sacramento Kings.

After such a great night w/ The Breakfast and i gotta wake up to this crap? Damn. Kobe no show Shaq shut down. Queens came to play today. Well 2 more games to stay in the top 4 seeds. Damn!

A deliberately lifeless showing. Phil Jackson Psychology 101. No need to worry. The Lakers thrive on winning tight games on the road in the playoffs.

I wish I could agree w/ that assessment. Due to having a glut of Laker coverage much of which does not air nationally, I do not think that is accurate. Phil WAS disappointed and the team was in disarray. This WAS a MUST WIN. They did not. Shaq says he\'s not impressed w/ Sacto\'s performance but also not impressed w/ Kobe\'s reluctance to shoot. I am not in panic mode by far but it is not going to be as ez as we may have thought just last week.
I only see 2 of the 3 series going to game 7 those being round 1 and 3. Lakers will win in 5 whoever they play in the middle series. Then also in 5 against whatever least conference team makes it.

Let\'s give it up for the Pacific Divison Champions! Bryant misses that shot, the Lakers are the four seed. He hits it, they\'re the two, and head of their division. Somehow, he hits it. It would have been absolutely brutal for the Lakers to have cost themselves home-court in the second round as a result of twice losing to Portland, the second time with the Blazers already eliminated. But they won tonight, displaying the gutty clutch play that defines great postseason teams. And the Kings helped by losing to almighty Golden State. The regular-season soap opera is over. The fun starts this weekend. I like the Lakers chances.

So do I. Kobe is the guy I want taking that shot anyday. I tried to convince someone on this forum of that. I hope they were watching.

Bryant\'s shot at the end of regulation was even more ridiculous than the game-winner. Ruben Patterson had two free throws with the Blazers up three points with eight seconds left in regulation and bricked both of them. If he hits even one, the Lakers are the four seed instead of the two. Gotta love it.

The Lakers winning the Pacific after the year they had is ridiculous. It just goes to show the NBA is not what it used to be. I do believe if Chick had seen this year even he would not think they could have taken the Division. A little luck and the miraculous meltdown of the Queens have left the Lakers in control of their Destiny and if KG can not get out of the 1st round AGAIN who becomes #1 seed nxt round?

I can\'t believe those 2 shots Kobe made...absolutely amazing.  What an incredible clutch performance.  2 of the toughest shots you\'ll ever see, and it\'s not like they were lucky shots either.  Half court shots are lucky shots, these were just plain nasty.  Plays like that lead to championships, no doubt about it.  Mad props to Kobe.  I am upping the over/under on Kobe\'s predicted scoring average at San Bernadino Maximum Security Correctional Facility from 85 PPG to 91 PPG.

Nah, they\'re too good.  They can get by on 2 out of 4 if the other team doesn\'t play well, and 3 out of 4 anytime.  Of their 58 total wins, how many have come with all 4 playing well?  5 or 6?  It\'s too easy.

Some funny stuff happening with the two coaches media comments, but to more serious business...that selfish Bryant!

Relatively calm win, decided in the last five minutes of the third quarter. Shaq only scored 7, but had a key "and-1" during the decisive run. Medvedenko\'s hurt, could miss a game or two, no huge deal. Payton looks like he\'s asleep and with Fisher and Rush playing well, I don\'t care. Bryant is this team\'s point guard anyway. One of his best playoff games following one of his worst.

Here\'s an interesting fact: Robert Horry is 11-of-15 from the field for the defending NBA champion San Antonio Spurs. Should the inevitable rematch occur, I smell a few "accidental" elbows from Mr. Malone to the chin of the former Laker, turned foe. Does anybody seem to recall Horry shooting 2-of-35 for last year\'s entire playoffs? That series has 7 games written all over it. But first things first: Gotta get 1 of 2 in Texas, then wrap it up in L. A.

huge win yesterday.. great comeback in OT after going completely stale after hitting the 81-point mark, yao fouls out, kobe makes a huge defensive play, francis clotheslines a young girl in the crowd, and the lakers go on to take a key 3-1 lead.

exactly.. i\'ve been loving watching luke play this season. he\'s an incredible passer, and he\'s been adding 3\'s to his game. i definitely can\'t wait to see him play more.. the lob to shaq was just the icing on the cake last night! so sweet.

on another note, wtf were they thinking throwing the ball into shaq on the last play of regulation?? granted, it worked out, but detroit could have fouled him and the game woulda been pretty much over.

props to shaq though, for the clutch free throw when we needed it most, and d.fish in the corner... damn that was a great game..

Well @ the half only down by 7. I knew I wanted Indiana for some reason. OK basically their shot is off. The D is decent but they need Kobe to start up a bit and Derek needs to get scrappy and cause some turnovers. Lookin\' towards a tough 2nd 1/2.

:(:no::(

not looking good, guys.. pistons are doing everything right, and outplaying the balls out of the lakers. pistons are sinking everything, and absolutely OWN the boards. you can\'t ask for more than 36/20 from shaq, who has been the only one showing up.. kobe\'s been less than stellar, taking tons of illadvised shots.. 9 points from our bench?! :(

bottom line is, detroit\'s D is killing the lakers. in game 2, the lakers really stepped up their own D, and put really good pressure on detroit the entire game. that was the only game they played defense though. there\'s no excuse for giving up 32 points in the 4th quarter.

pistons haven\'t won it yet, but i\'m not too optimistic. they\'ve clearly been a better team, and unless the lakers make some big time adjustments, this series will be over tomorrow night. :(

Post by: ChrisPitch on June 15, 2004, 08:42:42 pm
The Lakers are about to add yet another chapter to their storied history by becoming the first team to ever rally from down 3-1 in the Finals. Dynasty.

And when they win it on Sunday, I\'ll say it was never in doubt because I\'ve always believed in Los Angeles until they\'re either officially champs or officially done, which I told Pec immediately following the Game 4 loss. Optimism.

The bottom line is, despite the predictable Pistons media ass-kissing, you can\'t claim victory a best-of-7 series with three wins. It\'s the first to four and it will be the Lakers. Confidence.

And on Wednesday morning, all the media suits who wrote off the Lakers after Game 4 will do their typical .180 and start crowning them champs. Typical.

I\'ll simply smile, knowing I never thought Los Angeles Lakers were done. Gotta win four to win to take the NBA Championship. Obvious (or so I thought).

Seriously, there\'s losing and then there\'s losing like a horse\'s ass.  I mean, Kobe guarantees victory and they don\'t even try to back him up.  Surely this was the most pathetic effort in NBA finals history by any team.  That goes for this game and the whole series.  If I were a Laker fan I wouldn\'t want any of these shmucks on my team next year.  But oh well, like I said, Lakers losing one, no biggie, one look at the StaplesCenter rafters makes it all go away.

Pathetic showing of course, but cleary the Lakers were out of Detroit\'s league. Nonetheless, I\'m always happy to be overly-positive with the Lakers. Their three-peat still demands such as long as the core remains. I meant it all. I really thought the Lakers were going to win and I think they\'ll win it next year. Bring back Shaq, Phil and Kobe and add a supporting cast. Lets go Lakers!

Glad you\'re not a Laker fan. Laker fans want Shaq to play out his contract and Kobe to sign on for a multi-year contract. Why? Because Laker fans LOVE drama and Great Players.
So Kobe did not show up this series, damn man he had one hell of a year. Next year he will not have court over his head and once he sees the $$$ Dr. Buss is gonna offer he\'s staying. Hopefully the Payton curse will be lifted and they can move on w/ giving Derek some moola too!
Kupchek is no West but he will find some role players for another run Bet on it. Detroit came to play and Larry outcoached Phil. Larry knows this team well having faced them w/ the 76\'ers. I will wait until next year when knowing what awaits them the Lakers take Detroit in 6. \'cause u know the Pistons r comin\' back and there is still no one in the West that can beat the Lakers. So here\'s to this year\'s champs beer and to the Laker\'s great season beer !!!!!!

There\'s no way all that is going to happen for the Lakers, but they\'re actually in better shape than some people think.  The least likely to come back is Jackson, but he\'s also the least important.  Assuming Kobe is not playing for the San Bernadino Maximum Security Penitentary All-Stars, you\'ve got about a 60/40 chance there.  Getting rid of Malone helps, and dumping Payton would help even more although he has a player\'s option for 5.2M next year.  It would be really funny if he picked up the option and got his money, and the new coach cut him because he sucks, and he got his money while playing golf or being the sixth man on the Clippers.

The hardest part is adding the "supporting cast."  First of all, you never know with a lot of people.  The "supporting cast" this year (namely Malone and Payton) had a couple of good games but overall were awful, and they were supposed to be fantastic.  They\'ll have the next-to-last draft pick and will be lucky to get anyone who can make an impact next year.  If they resign Kobe there\'s little cap room for any other quality players.  Most good players (who aren\'t desperate for a last-gasp ring a la Payton and Malone) won\'t want to come becuase they know that Shaq and Kobe are taking 75% of the shots.

Bottom Line:  If they get Kobe back they will be very good, but having two Godzillas is gonna prove to be too big for its own good.  All 4 pro sports champions right now (Patriots, Marlins, Lightning, and Pistons) are champions for good reason.  They are teams that play the total team game.  They are all very deep, and while some players naturally do more than others, everyone on these rosters makes a significant and positive contribution every time they play.  The Lakers will never be this way with Shaq and Kobe.  As this series shows, they cannot just ride these two with nothing else.  But right now they have nothing else and adding the supporting cast is the hardest thing to do.  Time will tell!

I don\'t think that this was a bad move at the time.  It\'s like saying that the Orlando Magic made a bad move in signing a perfectly healthy Grant Hill a few years ago, or that it was a mistake for the Celtics to draft Len Bias in 1986.

I would say it was one of many mistakes Jordan made in the front office. He never had the skills there for sure. Both your examples are of horrors happening to the team that Gained the player. Jordan let Rip go and he blew up! So Detroit is glad to have gotten him yeah? I\'m not sure of your logic unless you mean Stackhouse is no good? That\'s it huh?. Like anyone w/ a modicum of intellegence could have predicted. Phil is gone and Shaq is to be the catalyst to getting a supporting cast. Thank goodness the Fatman is willing to be traded. It has been 2 years since that fat fuck was worth a damn. Anyone that wants a fat center who talks a better game than he plays come and get him. Now as long as Karl is healthy he will return to the Lakers. Depending on who they get for Shaq will be a big part of if Fish comes back. Gary will most likely accept the $$$ as no one else will give him that amt so hopefully they just let the fuck go instead of letting him cause problems. Walton, Rush and Cook are a good start to a more productive bench. I have no idea why the big ruckus. I see a very good chance that the Lakers will contend next year. A championship no but a good run in the playoffs to start the Kobe era most likely. With the subtraction of Shaq and his "Give me the damn ball" attitude we may see the Lakers turn into a real team. So to all the bandwaggoners "Get back on now last chance". LOL

Well looks like I\'m gettin\' what I asked for. Just wish the Lakers had a better GM than Kupchek \'cause the proposed trade to Miami accomplishes only puttin\' Shaq in the East. If they can trade Payton for a token center and Kobe does indeed come back the Lakers may reshape into the type of team the Bulls were during their championship run sans the Triangle. Along w/ Rudy T. that spells a few championships to me.

I admit it. I\'m a tremendous buffoon. It now seems so obvious. The dynasty\'s nucleus had to be broken. Phil\'s burnt out and Shaq\'s a portrait of his past. Rudy T is the perfect fit having won twice at this level and Odom and Butler are both on the verge of being all-stars, especially when they mesh with the soon-to-be elite player in the league, No. 8, who\'d sooner retire than play for the Clippers. If you know anything, I mean anything at all, about the NBA and athletics in general, then you know the Los Angeles Lakers are guaranteed to win the title next season. The 2004-05 campaign started yesterday. Never shall I be a buffoon again.

Coach Jackson: GONE.  Hurts a little, but Shaq and Kobe can win with anyone.

Shaq:  GONE.  Well, they\'re not gonna beat the Spurs for at least 3 years now, but sometimes you gotta trade the star for prospects if the star is unhappy.  (Read: Nomar)

Payton: BACK.  That\'s a lot of money for someone who can\'t play, but no problem, he can\'t hurt the team after he is cut.

Kobe:  Don\'t worry Laker fans, there is no way Kobe is playing for the Clippers, becasue the Clippers will never agree to move 10 home games to the San Bernadino Maximum Security State Penitentary.

Finally Kobe has signed and over the last week more and more of the Fatman\'s B.S. has come to light. The Lakers had to get rid of the egobag as an agreement had been reached that if no contract agreement could be made in season then in the off-season a trade would be made. This was in February and Kupchek tried again 2 months ago. Shaq said no. So all those Kobe haters saying Kobe drove Shaq out B.S. !! The Fatman did it himself being so damn full of himself. MDE my ASS!!!! How dominant was he in the Finals NOT! How about last year when he did not get healthy until late in season and COST US @ LEAST 3 SPOTS in the playoffs. I thank Shaq for the years when he did come to play from day one. It brought the Lakers 3 Trophies. The last 2 years when he was hurt due to bad conditioning, delayed surgeries, and the weight of his EGO only hurt this team in dividing it between the promise of Kobe and the promise of what Shaq had been and could be. He may get in shape and kick butt in the East and if he does FUCK HIM!! Why couldn\'t he have been like that here the past couple of years? L.A. LIVING BABY that\'s why. Hit the road Shaq and don\'t ya come back no more no more no more no more hit the road Shaq and don\'t ya come back no morrrrre what you saaay? Hit the road Shaq.....

Yet again Basketball ignorance shown. The Lakers are not done wheeling and dealing. Kobe will have help and his Leadership will be shown. Anyone who thinks the Lakers are now a lottery team knows absolutely NOTHING about the NBA. The players we got in return for Shaq are actually good players. Lamar is an up and coming player who may turn out to be Kobe\'s "Pippen". The fact that Kobe bleeds Purple and Gold leads me to think that he will not let this team fall to far from the top. So all you Laker haters enjoy while you can, The Lakers will be back w/ Kobe leading the Charge!!!!!!!!!!!!

Way to represent Leith. The fact is that if the Spurs are considered title contenders because of Duncan, and the Timberwolves are considered such because they have KG, then the Lakers have to be considered an NBA Championship contender due to the presence of Kobe Bryant, one of the league\'s elite players. Add in Odom, the next Jordan, and it\'s clear that the Lakers are on the verge of a second era of dominance. I would have loved for Shaq and Fisher to retire as Lakers, but neither are worth their current price tags. On it goes.

Of course, the Lakers haven\'t has as good an offseason as the Celtics, whose 6-year, 41-million deal with Marc Blount is sure to place another banner right up there, along side the last one they won, which was back in 1986. Quite a year for Boston fans.

Lakers just got faster, bigger and added much needed depth. I knew Mitch would keep workin\' it. Lakeshow will be in FULL EFFECT this season!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It will be great to not rely on Brian Cook in the backup 5 spot next year as he had to do a few times in the playoffs.

Vlade is old as shit, but to have the size of Grant and Mihm before Cook thats much needed relief

oh and add Medvedenko to that list above, he did resign

Nice to see a few REAL Laker fans out east. It is incredible how many people have bailed the Laker Buss since the Finals ended. Next season cannot come quick enough. Can we just hand the Cardinals the Trophy, Ask Paul T. to give the Pats their nxt championship and get the NBA rolling?

Figures. Payton is a whiny bitch and refused to go to the Celtics. Fox decided to retire it seems(good choice), Payton should follow suit. What a fucker. At least the Celtics were willing to keep the trade intact w/ a little juggling. So the Lakers returned Banks and we get another player Jones but lose a draft pick next year not too bad.

So Kobe Haters what do u think now?? As I said from the start Kobe is NOT going to jail. News conference on now and the ALLEGED victim has decided not to pursue the trial further. Pretty fishy. Guess she realized perjury was a crime in itself.

O\'Neal\'s Agent: Allegation Undeserving Of Response

POSTED: 8:47 am PDT September 29, 2004
UPDATED: 10:13 am PDT September 29, 2004

LOS ANGELES -- A report Wednesday stated Kobe Bryant told detectives investigating his sexual encounter with a hotel employee in Colorado that Shaquille O\'Neal paid up to $1 million dollars to keep women quiet about similar situations.

O\'Neal\'s agent told the Los Angeles Times that the allegation was untrue and undeserving of a response.

The allegation was reported to have been made while detectives were investigating claims by a 19-year-old hotel employee that Bryant had raped her.

Charges against Bryant were dropped.

A civil action is pending.

O\'Neal takes shot at Bryant as feud escalates

September 29, 2004
NEW YORK (AP) -- Separating Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O\'Neal on different teams on different coasts has done nothing to lessen the animosity between the one-time Los Angeles Laker teammates. If anything, the feud is escalating.

On Wednesday, O\'Neal dismissed as ``ridiculous\'\' Bryant\'s allegations that O\'Neal had paid up to $1 million in hush money to various women and then took his own shot by saying, ``I\'m not the one buying love.\'\'

O\'Neal made the remark over the telephone to a staffer at ESPN, the network said, after the Los Angeles Times quoted a police report as saying Bryant told detectives in Eagle, Colo., ``he should have done what Shaq does ... that Shaq would pay his women not to say anything\'\' and already had paid up to $1 million ``for situations like this.\'\'

The statement came near the end of a lengthy interrogation about a hotel employee\'s complaint that Bryant had raped her.

The Times said it was unclear precisely what Bryant meant by his remarks.

Prosecutors dropped criminal charges against Bryant earlier this month at the accuser\'s request, but the woman has filed a federal civil suit against him in Denver, seeking unspecified damages for pain and suffering since the case began.

O\'Neal was informed of Bryant\'s allegation last September, and the relationship between the two was cool throughout the 2003-04 season. O\'Neal was subsequently traded to the Miami Heat.

``This whole situation is ridiculous,\'\' O\'Neal told ESPN. ``I never hang out with Kobe, I never hung around him. In the seven or eight years we were together, we were never together. So how this guy can think he knows anything about me or my business is funny. And one last thing -- I\'m not the one buying love. He\'s the one buying love.\'\'

O\'Neal\'s latter comment was an apparent reference to a ring -- reportedly costing several million dollars -- that Bryant gave his wife, Vanessa, after he was charged with felony sexual assault last summer.

There have been no published reports of O\'Neal ever being accused of any sex crimes. He was charged with misdemeanor battery in Orange County, Fla., in 1998 after a 23-year-old Walt Disney World employee claimed he grabbed her neck, but the case was dismissed in 2000.

Yep Time to get ready for another season of Laker Haters. Kobe And Lamar will show that Mitch and Co. knew what they were doing when they sided w/ Kobe in the Shaq/Kobe feud. From all reports Kobe is hanging out w/ the other players and even acting like a teammate to other players. He realizes the enormous burden put on him but ralizes it is nothing compared to the burden he could have faced. Lets Go Lakers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well Dave should rename this thread something to reflect that the Lakers are no longer 56-26, and haven\'t been since April, but my predicition is a serious one: Pacers over Timberwolves for the NBA title. If I\'m right, way to go. If I\'m wrong, I\'ll just be continuing a recent trend of incorrect predictions. Of course, I\'d love to be wrong if it meant a Lakers NBA title, but after last night...
