Did anyone see the Yanks/Sox ST game yesterday?  Pretty good game...  Sox sent out a B squad consisting of mostly back ups and PawSox and still held their own against a full Yankee ML squad.  Though those Yankees hitters can really work a pitcher, man.  Papelbon had full counts all over the place.   He didn\'t look like he had the best stuff but he gutted through his 5 innings, very impressive.  Chacon really looked good too for the Yanks, I think he may end up being one of their best starters.  And yeay Bernie, good to see him hitting well.  Have to say he\'s my favorite Yank.  Adam Stern also continued to impress after he almost single handedly beat the US team in the WBC.  And a laser HR by Wily Mo.  Wow!

Well Minyana can certainly throw money at a guy as good as anyone else in the game.  A god though, I don\'t know about that one, remember Kazuo Matsui?  Though I\'m pulling for them this year to dethrone the Braves in the NL East.  Wright is a beast, he\'s the complet package, feilding, hitting man he\'ll be good.

I\'m kind of hoping that the Mets need one big acquisition by the trading deadline.  Maybe then the Sox can pry Lastings Milledge out of their system.  That guy looks to be well, the next Beltran.  Speaking of whom, I hope he can really put together a quality season.  He should be better than his numbers last year.  I bet Shea may have something to do with that though.  It\'s about time they do something with that stadium, namely raze it to the ground and make a new one.

yea matsui was the worst acquisition ever. all we want to do is get rid of the loser.

If we got a solid second baseman and some middle relievers we have a good chance at winning it all.

Minaya is the man though. He totally turned the team around.

And beltran will deffinitly bounce back. Last year he was just in a mental rut. He is adjusted now I am sure of it.

I just cant wait to see reyes flying around those bases! woohoo! I love baseball.

Hey Bitchie, I mean Pitchie...when\'s the last time the Mets won a World Series?  TWENTY years ago.  And the end to your drought is nowhere in sight.  The Mets suck.  And if it weren\'t for interleague games against the Yankees and opening day, you wouldn\'t have sold out a single game in the last 5 years.

again, every year people doubt the Braves winning the division and this year is no different. the mets made some decent acquistions in the off-season, dont forget 59-year-old Julio Franco.  The Braves got solid pitching but w McDowell they should skip a beat. mcCann did good in post-season and is good be great, along with giles, chipper, andruw, franceur, laRoche, the offense will be there. should be a great race with the phillies, marlins, and Nats likely all looking to make some sort of statement.

im bored too...

Not bad for a team who lost their ace and closer...

Seriously though I would like to stick Schilling and Wells in a cannon and catapult respectively (mainly because Wells wouldn\'t fit in a cannon) and send them out of town.  They need to shut their effin\' mouths.

I bet the Sox have more 2B than any team in the majors, it\'s all part of their master plan.  Just you wait, you\'ll be singing their praise when Enrique Wilson wins the MVP.:sarcasm:

At least the Sox seemed to have acquired Cerrano for Arroyo.

Boston\'s Tavarez punches D-Rays\' Gathright
By Howard Ulman, AP Sports Writer  |  March 27, 2006

FORT MYERS, Fla. --The Red Sox are ready for the opening bell. One week before their first regular-season game, excitable reliever Julian Tavarez punched Tampa Bay outfielder Joey Gathright lightly in the jaw Monday during a play at home plate Monday, the latest flareup between the teams.

Players ran from benches and bullpens but no injuries were reported as they clutched opponents and tried to keep their teammates from going after the other side.

The action came one day after Red Sox pitcher Josh Beckett yelled at Philadelphia\'s Ryan Howard when the right-hander thought the first baseman took too long to watch what he may have thought was a homer but ended up being a long fly out.

Players ran on the field then, too, after Howard went to his spot at first base for the top of the seventh, threw his glove down, looked into Boston\'s dugout, talked back to Beckett and walked toward him. Beckett was restrained before he stepped back onto the field and no one threw any punches or shoves.

In Boston\'s 12-11 win, which ended when Hee-Seop Choi walked with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth, Gathright raced home while Julio Lugo was caught in a rundown between first and second in the eighth. Second baseman Zach Borowiak threw to Tavarez, who tagged Gathright out as the outfielder slid.

Gathright said Tavarez stood on his right forearm after the tag. Tavarez agreed but said he wanted to beat Gathright to the punch.

"I saw him try to get up and I wasn\'t going to let him throw a punch at me right away," said Tavarez, who threw a second punch on the top of Gathright\'s head. "You hear about whoever throws the first punch gets the win. That\'s what happened."

In the Devil Rays clubhouse, Gathright rolled up his right sleeve to show a small scratch on his right forearm. He said he had pushed Tavarez\'s left knee to try to free his arm. But Tavarez drew his fist back with Gathright\'s right knee and hand still on the ground.

"It just kind of grazed the jaw," Gathright said.

Both players were calm after the game.

Gathright said "we\'ll forget about it tomorrow." Tavarez said, "I don\'t know if I hit him good or not. I just wish that would\'ve never happened."

Tampa Bay designated hitter Jonny Gomes said he hopes no bad blood remains between the teams when they play April 18 in Boston.

"I hope not," he said. "but we\'re grown men out here and you never know who\'s holding a grudge."

In the bottom of the eighth, Choi was hit by a pitch by Wayne Franklin, but Red Sox manager Terry Francona said it didn\'t appear to be intentional. Still, both benches were warned.

The Red Sox and Devil Rays have been involved in several brawls. Tavarez is in his first season with Boston.

Four players and both managers were suspended for their role in a game last April 24 in which pitchers from both teams intentionally hit batters, sparking a fight.

On Sept. 27, 2004, two players from each team were hit by pitches and players ran onto the field.

In August 2000, eight Devil Rays and no Red Sox were ejected when Tampa Bay\'s Gerald Williams charged Boston pitcher Pedro Martinez, who had hit him with a pitch.

Monday\'s brawl "had nothing to do with history," Tampa Bay manager Joe Maddon said. "That may require suspension, absolutely. That kind of action cannot be tolerated."

Tavarez, who played for St. Louis the past two seasons, broke the fourth finger and bones in his left hand when he tried to trash the bench after allowing a tiebreaking homer in Houston\'s victory in the fourth game of the 2004 ALCS.

"He punched the phone," Cardinals manager Tony La Russa said.

On Monday he punched Gathright, a move he said he regretted.

"I\'m not a fighting guy," Tavarez said, "I get along with my teammates and everybody, but when you\'re on the field, you know, things happen."

Gathright said he couldn\'t do much with Tavarez standing on his arm.

"I was like, `Get off my arm,\' and he wouldn\'t move," Gathright said. "It\'s spring training and he\'s known for something, so nobody really cares. I could care less. I\'ll get over this. Hopefully, everybody else does."

Both starting pitchers struggled, with Boston\'s David Wells allowing six runs in four innings and Tampa Bay\'s Casey Fossum giving up 10 runs in 4 1-3 innings. Boston led 7-0 after two innings, 7-6 after three and 10-6 after five. Tampa Bay tied it with four runs in the eighth -- Ty Winnington\'s RBI single making it 10-10.

Tim Corcoran walked the last two batters in the ninth, giving Boston the win.

Gomes and Boston\'s Mark Loretta had three hits each. Gomes hit his third exhibition homer and Toby Hall hit his second, both in the third against Wells.

Tavarez is a PAB.  I mean the Red Sox have a pretty good FO but sometimes some moves come out of there where I just feel like shaking Theo vigorously and say "what the hell is the matter with you".  Signing Tavarez was one of those.  He "loves himself, bro".  What an ass.  I mean even Manny was taking him away from the media. What does it mean when the guy who played sick and then showed up at dinner w/ Enrique Wilson knows that you are doing something stupid?  Another Sox to put in the cannon...

Good news everybody.

ESPNDeportes, which first reported the news that Ortiz was close to signing an extension, said the deal was a four-year contract, running through 2010 and worth an average of $12.5 million a year.

What a way to begin the season huh?  Good for Papi, good for Sox, and good for New England.

Arroyo hits Home Run

Quote
By Joe Kay, AP Sports Writer  |  April 5, 2006

CINCINNATI --Ken Griffey Jr.\'s 537th career homer got upstaged by Bronson Arroyo\'s first. Arroyo got the loudest and longest ovations Wednesday -- and a respectful bow from Griffey -- in a successful Cincinnati debut. He pitched into the seventh inning and hit his first career homer in his first at-bat, leading the Reds to an 8-6 victory over the Chicago Cubs.
"I\'ll take that 50 times over," Arroyo said.

His do-it-all debut overshadowed a big moment for Griffey, who moved ahead of two Yankees with his first homer of the season.

Griffey\'s solo shot was his 537th, breaking a tie with Mickey Mantle for 12th on the career list. It also provided his 1,538th RBI, moving him ahead of Joe DiMaggio for 31st on that list, which doesn\'t include anything before 1920, when RBIs became a statistic.

"Those guys are legends," Griffey said. "You can\'t say enough for those guys and what they\'ve done for baseball. Both of those guys are arguably in the top 10 players in the history of the game."

Although Griffey\'s homer was the more historic, Arroyo\'s was the more memorable. It changed the mood and the music at Great American Ball Park two days after the Cubs opened the season with a 16-7 win.

The Reds got Arroyo from Boston in a trade for popular outfielder Wily Mo Pena on March 20, a move that stunned and unnerved the lanky right-hander. Fans looking for him to prop up the NL\'s worst rotation of 2005 gave Arroyo a loud ovation on opening day.

"I definitely noticed it," Arroyo said. "It just means that people are expecting big things from me. I hope I can come here and satisfy that need for us to have some quality pitching."

His hitting made the first impression.

Arroyo came to bat in the third inning and homered off left-hander Glendon Rusch (0-1), who got ahead 0-2 in the count before throwing a down-the-middle fastball. Arroyo, a .073 career hitter, timed it perfectly.

Everyone knew the ball was gone long before it landed in the left-field seats, 403 feet away. Arroyo dropped his head and rounded the bases briskly, his shoulder-length hair flapping behind his helmet.

"I was in another world after hitting it out," said Arroyo, who hadn\'t hit one since high school.

Griffey waited for him on the top step of the dugout, grabbed the bill of his own batting helmet and bowed in respect over the shocking swing. Griffey noticed that Arroyo\'s batting helmet had protective ear flaps on both sides -- something most hitters frown upon.

"It\'s amazing for a guy hitting with a double ear flap," Griffey said. "I didn\'t know if he hit left-handed or right-handed."
Page 2 of 2 --It was Arroyo\'s first hit since Oct. 2, 2001 at Shea Stadium. Before that swing, he was 4-for-55 career with 33 strikeouts
Led Zeppelin blared over the public address system while Arroyo, a rock guitarist in his off-hours, warmed up to start the game. When he went back to the mound to warm up after his homer, the videoboard showed a replay while Joey Scarbury\'s "Greatest American Hero" played.

"Anytime you come to a new place, everybody wants to be accepted and wanted," he said.

Rich Aurilia and Griffey followed Arroyo\'s homer with their own, helping the Reds pull ahead 7-2 after the fifth inning.

"I fell behind and made a bad combination of pitches," said Rusch, who threw 85 pitches in only four innings. "Once you get behind in the count, you\'ve got to make real good pitches instead of just good ones."

Each team hit three homers Wednesday in a ballpark where a major league-leading 246 flew out last year. The Cubs scored 22 runs in the two games but managed only a split because their pitching staff -- missing injured starters Kerry Wood and Mark Prior -- had control problems.

"We\'ve got to get our bullpen shored up and do what we can until we get our big boys back," manager Dusty Baker said.

Aramis Ramirez hit a two-run homer for his 10th at Great American Ball Park, tying Geoff Jenkins for most by a visiting player. Derrek Lee also hit a two-run shot in the sixth, a couple of pitches after catcher David Ross dropped his foul pop for an error.

Arroyo got two outs in the seventh before Kent Mercker relieved and gave up a pinch two-run homer to John Mabry that cut it to 7-6. David Weathers, who led the staff with 15 saves last year, retired all three batters in the ninth for his first this season.

Notes:@ RBIs weren\'t kept as a statistic before 1920. ... In contrast to the cloudy, blustery opener, the weather was much more favorable Wednesday -- sunny and 54 degrees with a light wind blowing out. ... The crowd of 27,287 cheered loudly whenever left fielder Adam Dunn caught a fly ball. Dunn was jeered on opening day for dropping one and misplaying another. ... Rusch had won his last four decisions in 2005, matching his career high. ... It was Mabry\'s fourth career pinch-hit homer.

As someone who was at last night\'s game, I\'d like to congratulate Pedro Martinez on his 200th career victory after a performance in which he wasn\'t dominant, but effective, throwing strikes and escaping early trouble to get stronger as the game progressed. And Delgado\'s moon shot sure helped.

The Braves have won 14 straight NL East titles and a five-game lead in April is hardly safe, but if you\'re an objective baseball observer, you\'d be a fool to not say this division is the METS TO WIN!!!

whats the deal with the met\'s guy getting 50 games? his translator was unable to tell him that drugs are bad in MLB?

also, the greatest rivalry in sports makes its 06 debut tomorrow at Fenway, do you think the fans will give Damon a standing ovation or boo him? Will he get a video montage? And there will be .info representation in attendance Tuesday night in Boston, set your VCRs and tivos kids, I plan on making sportcenter. . .

I was at Yanks/Jays yesterday, and here\'s a few observations from the bleachers

1. Bernie Williams should retire ASAP.  I really like Bernie, and I\'m grateful for all he\'s given the Yanks, but c\'mon.  He was in RF yest. due to the Sheff injury, and he just embarassed himself.  It was sad to watch. He\'s also hitting .220.  I think given the AB\'s Bubba Crosby could hit at least .250, and be adaquete defensively.

2. Jeter will win the batting title this year, write it down.

3. Giambi\'s homer hit the wall of the upper deck with a resounding thud.  He\'s raking to the tune of a 1.400 OPS.  Right now he\'s a strong candidate for MVP.

Red Sox 7, Yankees 3.

Forget Steinbrenner.  The owner of the Yankees is David Ortiz.  Nice try signing another Red Sox, Mike Myers, for the sole purpose of retiring David Ortiz this year.  You thought he was the answer.  The truth is, there is no answer.  David Ortiz owns the Yankees like no player ever has.  There\'s nothing you can do about it.

As for Damon; half cheers, half boos.  Pretty much par for the course... okay, that\'s over, let\'s move on to baseball.  Personally I would have cheered him enthusiastically, but I can understand why people boo when someone goes to the Yankees for more money.  There\'s really nothing wrong with it, that\'s business, but I can see why some people boo all the same.

Oh and Yankee fans, how did you like your first look this year at Jonathan Papelbon?  The Ortiz/Papelbon combo is gonna sink the Yankees plenty more times this year for sure.

Yes, there\'s plenty more.  The Yankee\'s best offensive player and their closer do not play well against the Red Sox.  And I understand you don\'t watch every Sox game, but Papelbon is lights out with ANY lead.  You\'re obviously not aware of this, but he is 10-for-10 in save chances with 2 walks against 14 strikeouts and an ERA of 0.00.  It\'s not his fault that Ortiz, who does a lot more than just "play well" against the Yankees, hit a colossal 3-run bomb to give the Sox a 4-run lead.  A-Rod and Posada would have looked just as retarded against Papelbon even if it were a 1-run lead.

And you gotta love the Mirabelli madness.  Guy goes from State Police escort in California > jet > helicopter > Mass State Trooper Cruiser and runs into the park somehow already in full uni with under 10 minutes to spare.  That was freakin awesome!

Yeah tough day for team New England coming up for a canceled game.  Game is rescheduled as 1st game of day/night doubleheader Friday August 18th.  I\'ll gladly take it; the game will have much more important impact on the standings, will be in baseball weather, and I\'ll take the whole day off and go to game 2 as well.  I\'ve never been to a double-header, what better way to do it than Sox v. Yankees at Fenway.  Maybe Clemens will be pitching!

Papelbon wins April DHL award
Boston righty converts 10 saves in as many opportunities
BOSTON -- For his perfect 10 during his first month as the closer of the Red Sox, Jonathan Papelbon was recognized on Thursday as Major League Baseball\'s Delivery Man of the Month for April. The award, sanctioned by Major League Baseball and sponsored by DHL, recognizes the most outstanding relief pitcher during each month of the regular season.
It would have been hard to top Papelbon\'s performance, as he was essentially flawless, converting 10 saves in as many opportunities.

Over 14 1/3 innings in April, Papelbon was unscored on and registered 14 strikeouts.

Papelbon\'s performance was impressive enough on its own, but even more so when you consider he wasn\'t even considered the closer when the season started.

But in the third game of the regular season, with the Red Sox holding a 2-1 lead in Texas, manager Terry Francona pulled off what was, at the time, a surprising move, asking Papelbon to close the game instead of Keith Foulke.

"Terry said if the ballgame is close, you\'re going to get the ball in the ninth, so be prepared," said Papelbon, recalling the events of that night. "From there on out, I\'ve basically kind of taken that role upon myself and just tried to do the best I can do."

Papelbon finally gave up a run on Wednesday, suffering a 7-6 loss to the Blue Jays. But his lights-out start in April was something to behold.

The Red Sox view Papelbon as a starting pitcher down the road. But right now, he is too invaluable as the closer.

"I like the competition, the fact that you have to go in there and be successful every day," Papelbon said. "You\'ve got to get outs right then and there -- the pressure is on."

Papelbon might have surprised everyone but himself by performing in such dominant fashion in April.

"I set my goals high. If you were going to tell me I would have had 10 saves and not given up a run, I would have believed it," Papelbon said. "That\'s just the way I go about it. It\'s not cocky, it\'s just confidence. It\'s just me going out there knowing who I am, knowing the pitcher that I am and going out there and executing."

The execution has been uncanny. With a 95-mph heater and a nasty split, opposing batters have looked bewildered trying to solve Papelbon.

The "DHL Presents the Major League Baseball Delivery Man of the Month Award" winner is selected by a special Major League Baseball "yellow-ribbon" panel that includes newly elected Hall of Fame pitcher Bruce Sutter; Lou Piniella, former manager and player; Mike Bauman, national columnist for MLB.com; Jerome Holtzman, the official MLB Historian and a member of the writer\'s wing of the Hall of Fame; and Bob Watson, vice president of on-field operations, Major League Baseball.

At the conclusion of the season, Major League Baseball fans will have the opportunity to determine which relief pitcher had the best overall season through the second annual DHL Presents the Major League Baseball Delivery Man of the Year Award.

A list of finalists will be selected based on statistical qualifiers, and fans will be able to vote for the winner online at MLB.com. Last season, Mariano Rivera of the New York Yankees was named the inaugural recipient of the DHL Presents the Major League Baseball Delivery Man of the Year Award

Some Nuggets from Gammons:

Summary of Comments from ESPN\'s Peter Gammons on WEEI\'s Big Show Today: Gammons thinks there is more hostility toward Pedro Martinez than Johnny Damon, who is a genuine guy. According to Gammons, Pedro is going to take some heat upon his return to Boston and will probably get a little testy before he arrives. Gammons said that unlike Damon, Pedro departed simply because of more money and left Boston guns blazing because of his relationship with Curt Schilling.

Gammons added that David Wells threw well today and will throw again on Sunday. Then he\'ll debate with Sox management about a rehab start. He could be ready in a week to 10 days.

The Red Sox are worried about the double play combination\'s offense, Gammons said. If Alex Gonzalez continues to struggle, Gammons thinks the Sox will call up Dustin Pedroia to play some second base and shortstop, and give them a little offense.

Top 10 Moments from this week\'s Red Sox - Yankees series in Da Bronx:

10.  Drop-Papi-gate.  The media is supposed to commentate on how the players play.  Only in New York would the players be commenting on how the media plays.  Reason #1,476,893 I got the hell out of living in Manhattan as fast as possible: not having to read Post and Daily News headlines every day.

9.  The return of E-Rod.  Even though his first Game 1 error opened the floodgates for the Sox, I more enjoyed the second error where the ball viciously attacked A-Rod, followed by A-Rod not even bothering to turn around to see where it went.

8.  Papelbon\'s Yankee Stadium Debut.  Despite the fact that Yankees were getting mowed down, I\'m sure Papelbon\'s outing gave Yankee fans many happy flashbacks to when Rivera could pitch like that.

7. (tie)  Randy Johnson\'s MRI following his horrendous outing.  Turns out his arm is fine and the problem is he\'s just too old to be throwing heat anymore.  MRI tests should now be called: Maybe Randy\'s Injured tests.

7. (tie)  Schilling\'s "clandestine" trip to the hospital during game 3.  A small convoy of paparazzi missed the game to follow him to the hospital on a night he wasn\'t even pitching.  Frikin New York.

5.  Sox scrubs hitting like crazy.  How about Dustin Mohr and Alex Gonzalez doubling their batting averages against Randy Johnson?  And in Game 3, Doug Mirabelli, whose average had dipped below .100 on his previous at-bat, getting a hit to start the 2-run go-ahead rally.

4.  Matsui = Dunzo.  This isn\'t cool.  I hate seeing anyone get injured.  The rivalry is best when both teams are loaded up and ready to go.  Injuries take away from it all.  In addition, there are only two Yankees I feel bad for if they get hurt: Matsui and Jeter.  Like I said, I don\'t ever want to see anyone get injured, but nobody\'s about to feel bad for someone like Sheffield.  Matsui I actually feel bad for.

3.  Despite Matsui\'s injury, Damon and Bubba Crosby were catching everything in sight in Game 3, including each each of them robbing a potential multi-run homerun in consecutive innings.  Cano also robbed a go-ahead 2-run hit with a nice over-the-shoulder catch in shallow right.  It looked like we couldn\'t get anything past these guys.  Then Bernie Williams goes and overruns an Alex Gonzalez pop-up by 5 steps, the ball falls for a ground-rule double, and the go-ahead rally is on.  Bernie\'s quote: "I was getting ready to climb up that wall, and as I was getting ready to do that, the wind blew it back."  Riiiiiiiight.  I used that one in fifth grade.

2.  A-Rod\'s game-winning homer off of Schilling.  Good job coming through to silence the critics and The Boss.  Enjoy it now, you won\'t be seeing any such thing in September.

1.  Bernie throwing his helmet at the home plate umpire and getting tossed.  At least Bernie did a good job of turning around and firing the no-look-lob at the ump to avoid the 50 game suspension.  I still can\'t believe Bernie Williams did that.  Johnson and Matsui are done, but when you look up dunzo in the dictionary you\'ll see Bernie Williams.  He\'s one of the greatest Yankees of all time to be sure, but he\'s pulling a Sinatra right now and a midseason retirement after this series would rank a 10 out of 10 on the Nobility Scale.

So I take it you wouldn\'t want David Ortiz on your team, right?  Get on here and post that you wouldn\'t want him on your team.  By your argument, every pitcher in the league is one-dimesnional because they don\'t hit.  To you, Josh Beckett, Brad Lidge, and Pedro Martinez are all "one-dimensional" thus you wouldn\'t take any of them either.  Anyone who hits for singles, doubles, homers, and average to both fields and comes through every time when needed is not a one-dimensional player.  Oritz happens to be the amongst the best in the league at the one dimension of hitting, which is half the game of baseball.  You\'re probably not aware that the A.L. has a position called Designated Hitter (DH for short) that requires someone on the team to hit without fielding.  This doesn\'t make anyone one-dimensional, it means they\'re playing a position that must be played.  And when Oritz does happen to play in the field he\'s not bad.  Just ask Jeff Suppan.  Hang your head in shame you silly little coyote.

Okay I\'ll try my best not to let the Yanks/Sox thing sway my judgement here.
David Ortiz is an elite hitter.  His past two seasons are HOF quality.  I\'d take him on the Yanks in a second.
The fact that he cannot adq. field a position is a weakness.  It makes him an inferior all around ball player to say a Vlad, who would put up just as nasty offensive #\'s if he had Manny hitting behind him, and has a deadly arm from RF.  Guerrero is what scouts call a 5 tool player*.
1. Hit for average
2. Hit for power
3. Run the bases
4. Catch the ball (or at least get to it)
5. Throw the ball

Ortiz does 2 out of 5.  40%.  He does them extremely well, but I have no doubt I can beat him in a 90ft. race.

His utter lack of fielding ability hurts the Sox two fold:

1. Ortiz occupying the DH results in Manny if LF full time.

2. The Sox have sent out sub-par offensive 1B\'s during Ortiz\'s tenure w/ the team.  If he was a good fielder, it would free up the DH position for more offense. Consider this, take Ortiz\'s #\'s and Kevin Millar\'s (2005) #\'s and add them together.  Now divide by 2.  This is a DH\'s true value.  His #\'s with the numbers of the guy playing his closest position in the field.  If there is little dropoff (ie Jim Thome/Paul Konerko) fine, but if the team suffers offensively for the guy they send out to cover the DH\'s def. ineptitude, it devalues said DH.

Your argument is blinded by the "B" on your hat.  You don\'t see me arguing that A-Rod is clutch.  Oh, and by the way Sox fans, Ortiz\'s his average is down latley, how long \'til you turn on him Nomar style?

Coyote, kid, you need to stop.  You can\'t say you would "take the guy on my team in a heartbeat" one second and then try to bring him down the next.  When you make any effort to bring down a player the caliber of Ortiz, you only bring down yourself.

You say "he cannot adequately field a position".  You have no basis to say this.  You haven\'t seen him play a position.  Just because he plays DH doesn\'t mean he can\'t do it.  Would you like me to burn you the DVDs of games 3 and 4 of the 2004 World Series?  He made play after play after play at all difficulty levels.  And Manny is fine in left.  He plays The Wall better than anyone since Yaz, you can ask any Red Sox fan.  He gets to just about everything hit at him, does not make many errors, and has led the AL in assists.  You don\'t watch the Red Sox, so you don\'t know.  He is not a liability whatsoever in the field.  Again, you assumed he cannot field because he is such a good hitter.  You need to get off this little assumption tangent and know your facts.  The fact is that nobody knows how good Ortiz is in the field because the sample size is too small, and anyone who knows what they\'re talking about knows that Manny plays a more-than-adequate left field, and a very good left field at Fenway Park.

The truth is that you can\'t stand Ortiz because he KILLS your team.  That\'s perfectly understandable.  But don\'t come on here and make an ass out of yourself by saying the most clutch player of the last decade and one of the most dynamic hitters of our entire lifetime isn\'t any good because he plays DH.  WHO CARES?

And that comment about how Sox fans would turn on Ortiz because his average is down is so stupid that you should be suspended from .info for a week.  About 90% of Sox fans were shocked and sad to see Nomar get traded when he did.  And the main reason people were starting to dislike him is because he clearly didn\'t want to play for the team anymore.  (Not to mention that he had been in rapid decline and constantly injured for 3.5 straight seasons at that point.)  You\'re a Yankee fan, did you watch the game on July 1st, 2004?  How would you feel about Jeter if he sat in the dugout picking his nails choosing not to play during an epic battle against the Red Sox?  That\'s why Jeter is better than Nomar.

Again, I know you can\'t stand Ortiz, and that\'s fine.  But please, cut this stuff out with how he\'s not a good player.  It makes you look silly, especially when you gush about how much you would want him on your team in the same breath.  Come back here when you have something legitimate to gripe about.

Wow. The nausea I feel must be because I\'m about to side with Wolf, but when your one dimension is battering the opposition on a regular basis, that\'s not such a bad dimension to have. I\'d take David Ortiz at first base tomorrow if the Mets didn\'t already have a top-notch lefty slugger. Any team would take him. Including the Yankees. He\'s better than the Giambalco. Deal with it.

And for the record, Ortiz really does provide more than one dimension for the Red Sox. He has extraordinary power, tremendous bat speed, and a great attitude as you never hear anyone gripe about his demeanor, on or off the field.

Well, now that that\'s over.

GASP, Ant Bachinski, a Yankees fan, is going to stick up for Ortiz. He really is not a bad fielder. We must remember that these guys are professional baseball players who have been doing this all their lives, and most can sufficiently play any position on the field (alot of these guys were pitchers growing up and in high school too) except maybe catcher, which I feel is the toughest position to play on the field both mentally and physically. If Ortiz got more playing time in the field he would probably become a very good one bagger. His career stats at the position are not all that bad:

220 games played at first
209 starts
1774 Chances
18 Errors
0.990 Fielding %

His % has declined the past two years, but probably because he isn\'t out there. I mean, fuck I\'ll take any player on my team who\'ll make an error once out of every 98.55 times he has a chance to make a play (i probably did my math wrong).

Oh and for the record:
Ortiz is expected to play first base in two of the three weekend games in Philadelphia, the Boston Globe reports.

I appreciate the research ant, nice job!  At the same time, this is the most bizarre sports discussion ever. WHO CARES how your DH fields?  I care about how well my DH plays defense as much as I care about how well my pitchers hit, how much my goalie scores, how well my quarterback can catch a pass, and how much my coach can bench press.

Good catch Klout, I was gonna post about that.  It was after the bottom of the 5th.  I posted on here a couple of years ago about how at a game at Fenway, some Mariner came out to "Megilla".  Then I went to another game that year against a different team, and some other guy also came out to "Megilla".  No way that\'s a coincidence.  It looks like "Megilla" somehow became the go-to song at Fenway Park for "visiting scrubs who don\'t bother to pick their song."

Me!, I think some people just want to make a scene out of themselves and get on TV or have their golden moment to talk trash live to a pro athlete.  Look at that kid.  He\'ll never see third row seats again in his life.  He just wants some attention for himself.

The reality is that no sensible Sox fan (which is actually most of them, believe it or not) cares that much.  Not even the guy in the picture.  The Sox are in first, the Yankees have their worst team in 12 years, and we have an adequate replacement for Damon soon to be off the DL.  Life goes on. "Damon reaction time" was one at-bat a couple of weeks ago when he first came up at Fenway.  Now it\'s just the-rest-of-the-next-four-years-he-has-as-a-Yankee.  It\'s time for everyone to get over it if they haven\'t already.

Red Sox place lefthander Lenny DiNardo on disabled list; recall righthander Jermaine Van Buren from Triple-A Pawtucket

BOSTON -- The Boston Red Sox today announced that lefthanded pitcher Lenny DiNardo has been placed on the 15-day disabled list (retroactive to May 22) with a neck strain. To replace DiNardo on the roster, righthanded pitcher Jermaine Van Buren has been recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket of the International League. Executive Vice President/General Manager Theo Epstein made the announcement.
Van Buren, 25 will wear #46 and be in uniform for tonight\'s game with New York.

DiNardo is 1-2 with a 7.11 earned run average in seven games/five starts with Boston in 2006. The lefthander lost in Philadelphia, 10-5 in his last appearance and start on Sunday.

Van Buren is 1-0 with a 1.17 earned run average (2 ER/15.1 IP) and a team high six saves in 11 appearances at Pawtucket this season. He has issued runs in just one appearance all season while holding opponents to a .192 batting average. In his last three outings the righthander has worked four scoreless innings with a win and two saves.

This is Van Buren\'s second stint with the Red Sox in 2006. He was with Boston from April 14-22, issuing two hits and a run in three innings in his lone appearance on April 22 at Toronto.

Acquired in a trade with the Chicago Cubs on December 1, 2005, Van Buren had a 0-2 record and 3.00 ERA in six outings with the Cubs in 2005 in his only previous major league action. He was originally selected by Colorado in the second round of the 1996 MLB First Year Player Draft before signing as a minor league free agent with the Cubs in January 2004.

Thank GOD!  Keep DiNardo as far from a major league mound as possible, awful

Yanks, Red Sox dominating AL votes

Bombers third baseman Alex Rodriguez has the early runaway lead on the ballot, with a 300,000-vote lead over Boston counterpart Mike Lowell. With 524,153 votes, A-Rod\'s real battle appears to be with Jeter for overall vote leadership.

David Ortiz, who would have to take a glove to Pittsburgh since the designated hitter will not be in use in the National League ballpark, leads at first base, his 451,431 votes providing an edge of 120,000 over Jason Giambi -- oddly, another frequent DH.

Showing the power of the pinstripe, Robinson Cano, playing his first big-league season and excelling, has a slight lead over Boston second baseman Mark Loretta at second base. With 289,394 checkmarks, Cano is fewer than 32,000 votes ahead of the former Padres infielder, who is wrapping up a hot first May in the Nation.

Yankees and Red Sox also lead at the two other infield positions, although their main competition comes from other precincts.

At catcher, Boston\'s Jason Varitek and the Yankees\' Jorge Posada are separated by 114,000 votes -- and by Detroit\'s Ivan Rodriguez, whose 277,034 votes trail Varitek by 58,000. Posada is 36,000 further behind I-Rod, a perennial All-Star.

Among outfielders, former Fenway neighbors Manny Ramirez and Johnny Damon are 123,000 votes apart. However, Ramirez\'s early lead is tenuous, with the Angels\' Vladimir Guerrero trailing by fewer than 2,000 votes.

Ramirez leads with 516,658, and Damon checks in with 393,643.

God I hate watchin games on YES

I can not stand the YES Broadcasters. They absolute make watching the game unbearable most of the time. Its better to just turn the commentary off and listen to music which always gets me to do something else thus I never watch games on YES only bits and pieces.

i had to listen to the yankee announcers during one of the subway series games and I wanted to fuckin shoot myself. They are the worst ever it makes the game suck its so bad. cant believe they let them on the air. Just typical of the yankees tho imo. big bucks and no personality.

Okay it\'s good for morale, but the big thing from this win is the play of Phillips and Cabrera.  Maybe Big Stein will let them stick around instead of trading for a big name.
I have heard Pat Burrell and Adam Dunn rumors.  2005-Burrell 160 K\'s, Dunn 168 :sigh:  That\'s almost as bad as Wily Mo Pena ;)

Just got back from this afternoon\'s Red Sox game.  Happy to report that Picture of Nectar is still getting solid play at Fenway Park for at least the fourth consecutive year.  They played The Landlady, Megilla, and Tweezer Reprise during various pauses in the game.  Definitely the only album to be played more than once during the game.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot...

ORTIZ WALKOFF HOMER IN THE NINTH WITH TWO ON, TWO OUTS, AND TWO STRIKES WHILE DOWN BY TWO RUNS.

He hit it right at me, 5 rows below where I was sitting.  That....was...awesome.

I mean, an 8-game win streak, a 9.5-game lead, and a 42-23 record deserves some mention.
So Let\'s Go Mets!

You\'re right. The Mets certainly were lucky in setting a major-league record by scoring in the first inning in each of their eight-straight road wins. Just about as unlucky as the Braves were in scoring a whopping total of five runs in getting swept by the Marlins.

And speaking of lucky numbers, here\'s one for ya: 13, as in the number of games the Braves are behind the Mets. But don\'t worry your headdress off just yet. Atlanta should be able to edge Florida and Washington for third place.

Johnson to Sox
By David Lefort, Boston.com Staff
The Red Sox added another arm today, trading for struggling Indians righthander Jason Johnson, who has eight losses and an ERA around 6.00 for the season. The Sox get Johnson and cash consideration in the deal in exchange for a player to be named later and cash.

Johnson’s role is not immediately known, though he could be given a shot to be the team’s fifth starter. To make room for him on the roster, the Red Sox optioned righthander Kyle Snyder to Triple-A Pawtucket.

The 32-year-old Johnson, who was designated for assignment yesterday, was 3-8 with a 5.96 ERA in 14 starts for the Indians this season and is 1-8 with a 7.38 ERA in his last 10 starts. Johnson, signed in the offseason after two years with Detroit, has allowed 10 homers and 108 hits in 77 innings. The 10-year veteran has a career record of 55-94 with a 4.95 ERA in 229 appearances (213 as a starter).

The Indians will pay most of his $3.5 million salary for this season. He had a one-year contract that had mutual options for either party to get out of it in 2007.

What’s to like about Johnson? The Red Sox were quick to point out his great ground ball-to-fly ball ratio (2.85 to 1, third in the American League). He has finished in the top 10 in the AL in that category in each of the last three seasons.

The 6-foot-6, 225-pound journeyman has spent time in Pittsburgh (1997), Tampa Bay (1998), Baltimore (1999-2003), Detroit (2004-05) and Cleveland (2006).

Johnson and righty Paul Byrd were signed by Cleveland as free agents before the season to help make up for the loss of Kevin Millwood, who signed with Texas. But Johnson was ineffective again Monday when he allowed two homers in a 12-8 loss to the Chicago Cubs.

He had an 8-13 record and 4.54 ERA with the Tigers last season.

wait aren\'t we supposed to be trying to get good ptichers

Title: The ONE and ONLY 2006 Baseball Thread!!

It\'s Randolph\'s second season as Mets manager. They\'re a well-balanced team with great talent and character. I\'m confident that they can win the World Series. But losses like last night--up 5-4 with two outs and no Reds on base--don\'t sit well. Still leading second-place Philly by 9.5 and the last-place Braves, who\'ve lost nine straight, by 14.5.

I\'d have to say the White Sox are still the class of the American League. They score 15 runs a game and have decent pitching. But if the Red Sox can solidify the backend of their rotation and keep getting good starts from guys like Lester and Snyder, I could see the 1986 rematch happening. I\'d sign on the dotted line in an instant to get the Mets in the World Series, no matter who\'s the opposition.

Post by: Klout on June 27, 2006, 12:14:44 pm
Twenty years ago, millions of baseball fans were mesmerized by the unimaginable drama of the 1986 World Series between the Red Sox and the Mets, but rookie sensation Jon Lester was just a 2-year-old infant who couldn\'t even spell the names Bill Buckner or Mookie Wilson yet.

During that season, 24-year-old Roger Clemens of Boston and 21-year-old Dwight Gooden and New York were the aces -- each had won a Cy Young Award and intimidated opposing batters all the way to the World Series.

Making nine combined career starts, rookies Lester and Mets right-hander Alay Soler, will square off in the opening game of a three-game set at Fenway Park that will reignite the emotions of one of the greatest World Series.

"It\'s going to be very strange," former Boston second baseman Marty Barrett, 48, said about seeing the Mets at Fenway.

"It gives you the desire to win, whether it was 50 years ago, 20 years ago, or today," former pitcher Dennis "Oil Can" Boyd said about seeing the Mets.

Aside from the uniform-induced nostalgia, the return of several members of the \'86 Red Sox squad for a pregame ceremony, and the sight of Pedro Martinez as a visitor in Fenway, the series has enough drama for its own reality show.

"Actually, I\'m going to take him out to dinner," designated hitter David Ortiz said about Martinez, his former teammate.

interleague 2006
Complete coverage >

Those included in the pregame ceremony for the 1986 team are former players and coaches such as Wade Boggs, Jim Rice, Dwight Evans, Barrett, Bruce Hurst, Calvin Schiraldi, Boyd, Joe Morgan and several others. The former team members will be honored with a video tribute and be presented with Red Sox jerseys.

The 1986 American League champion Red Sox were one strike away from their first World Series championship in 68 years in Game 6 at Shea Stadium and held a 3-0 lead in Game 7, but they would ultimately lose the series, forcing the Boston faithful to wait another 18 years before making another World Series.

"I think probably about 10 years later," Barrett said about when the loss stopped hurting. "Every year they showed the Buckner ball. It was just a constant reminder every year. But since [the Red Sox] won it in 2004 and the way they won it in 2004, going through the Yankees like that and then going through a Tony La Russa-coached team [the St. Louis Cardinals] like that, sweeping them. It was just really sweet for me to watch that."

With Boston\'s first-place status and current nine-game win streak, and the Mets holding the best record in the National League, this three-game series may only be a foreshadowing of a 20-year reunion in October.

"It\'d be nice to get to double-digits," second baseman Mark Loretta said about the win streak.

Lester will be looking for his third career win, coming off of the best start in his young and promising career. On Wednesday, Lester allowed one run and three hits in six innings while striking out 10 against Washington. Lester is 2-0, with a 2.76 ERA in three career starts.

This will be the sixth series between the teams since Interleague play began in 1997 and their first meeting since 2001. The Red Sox are 10-12 all-time against the Mets, including postseason.

Winners of nine straight, the Red Sox are 11-1 against the National League this year while the Mets are 5-4 in Interleague play.

Pitching matchup
BOS: LHP Jon Lester (2-0, 2.76 ERA)
Lester put on a phenomenal performance against Washington last week by striking out 10 and giving up only one run and three hits for his second victory in three career starts.

NYM: RHP Alay Soler (2-1, 3.32 ERA)
Soler comes off a disappointing start against the Reds. He allowed eight hits and two walks and needed 100 pitches to get through five innings. Will Fenway Park create a culture shock for him?

Player to watch
Right fielder Trot Nixon has raised his average from .317 to .326 since June 17 and leads the Red Sox in batting average. He has five extra-base hits in his last five games.

Dear Mets Fans:

I have previously posted in this very thread that in a weird, uncomfortable, hush-hush kind of way, I actually like the Mets.  Those of you who know me may remember that I even flirted with outright Met fandom in 2004 when I lived in New York.  So please understand that it pains me greatly to declare the following truths to be self-evident:

-The 2006 Mets and their overinflated record are merely the results of the weakest NL in history.
-The 2006 Mets would lose a 7-game series to Toronto, Detroit, Minnesota, Cleveland, Oakland, or Texas and would easily get swept by the Red Sox, Yankees, or White Sox.
-The 2006 Mets will be the first of 5-7 Mets teams where a Met fan can make the case that the Kazmir trade cost them the championship.  (Hey, at least you have some good years to look forward to.)
-The 2006 Mets have the worst stadium in MLB (again.)

I took in tonight\'s Pedro debacle from the Cask N Flagon across the street from Fenway Park.  I have never seen a bar so dialed in to a game.  It was like the Puppet House shows last summer except it was a game on TV.  Every single person in a packed house was 100% locked in to what was going on and it was awesome.  The best was walking past the few tables of Mets fans when it was 8-0 in the third.  The same people who had been cheering "Let\'s Go Mets" at the top of their lungs outside the park just an hour earlier suddenly couldn\'t look me in the eye.  They literally wouldn\'t even look up from the table.  They were trying to will themselves invisible.  Come October, they will be.

Dear Mets Fans:

-The 2006 Mets have the worst stadium in MLB (again.)

i cain\'t say that i disagree much with any of this....but i particularly agree with your last point.
i am really impressed with wright and reyes though. they look like big time players for years to come. i also think they will be very aggressive in adding quality players for the stretch run. things always change by october.

yea it sucks we lost the first two but our pitching just shit out on us....

Soler is understandable...rookie pitcher who gets flustered very easily and really doesnt have that great of stuff to begin with....

ANd pedro.....damn......talk about not being in the zone.....what did he give up 8 runs in 3 innings? Unreal......

I dont think the team should be judged as a team on these two outings.....yea i realize its a team effort but its kinda hard to win when shit like that happens.

Oh well. Its just one mid season series. We\'ll bounce back.

but those statements are by wolfman are pretty far from true.

The mets are a GREAT TEAM regardless of the rest of NL....if you think Toronto, Minnesota, Cleveland, Oakland, or Texas are better than them you either are not paying attention, dont know anything about baseball or are just talking shit. Probly all three.

How about the Green Monster eating Lastings Milledge for dinner?  What\'s the phobia for a fear of huge walls?  He\'s got it.  He\'s having nightmares about the Monster right now.  I can actually picture Wally The Green Monster (Sox Mascot) with a sinister look in his eye, cornering Milledge for a few minutes before biting his head off and chewing slowly.

How about Ramirez gunning down superspeedster Reyes on a *perfect* throw.  Manny plays some sick D.  Whoever was on here earlier saying he doesn\'t last watched the Red Sox in game 1 of the 2004 World Series.  Then when the Mets could have thrown out Manny at home on the same play, their throw was 20 feet offline.

Also loved Reyes plowing into Varitek with a full head of steam...and Reyes is the one who gets hurt.  Next time stay down, punk!

How about Youkilis ripping Pedro\'s second pitch back up the middle while Pedro\'s welcome back ovation was still going on?  Welcome back, bitch! rotfl That was a hilarious moment.

Did you know that last night the Sox broke the AL record for consecutive games without an error (13)?  And that Ortiz played first base for 6 of those games?

So many great moments the last two games.  Bottom line: put the Mets in the AL East and they\'re a game or two over .500 and in fourth place.  But hey, so what?  All you can do is beat the teams that get put in front of you, and the Mets are fortunate to be in the NL where they should waltz to the pennant.  Then they\'ll be fed to the lions in the World Series but at least you can say you were there.  They are quite reminiscient of last year\'s Seattle Seahawks, who got the top seed in a horrible NFC and made the Super Bowl before getting steamrolled by the AFC\'s lowest seeded playoff team.

While it seems everyone on .info was glued to Mets/Sox, in Coyoteland, Yanks/Braves was on the tube.  In Tuesday night\'s game ATL manager Bobby Cox used a double switch despite the fact the game was being played in the Bronx and thus by AL rules.  How is the double switch beneficial in an AL park?  I\'ve heard there are situations where the pitcher can be forced to bat even in the AL, but I don\'t understand how this works.  Was this one of those scenarios, or did Cox simply forget where he was?

BTW- A-Rod hit a walk off HR yesterday!
No, seriously.

I didn\'t watch the game, but to answer your questions: The double switch has no benefit in the AL, but it\'s possible that the player who is DHing has to replace a position player in the field for one reason or another.  (Example: Late in the game you pinch run for a slow infielder who has reached base.  But your pinch runner is an outfielder and cannot replace the guy he ran for in the infield and you have no other infielders left on the bench.  If the guy you have DHing can play the infield, you can switch his position to infield, thereby giving up the DH and the pitcher will have to bat in the infielder\'s place in the order.)  This only happens maybe once per year per AL team, and usually someone pinch hits when the pitcher\'s spot comes up or the game is over by then.  Very, very rare that a pitcher actually comes to bat.  One famous incident of this was Roger Clemens (as a Red Sox) coming up at Fenway Park and ripping a single in his only at-bat ever at Fenway.  Also I think John Wetteland batted for the Yankees in the playoffs once.

Okay, I looked over the box score and this makes sense.  Andruw Jones started out as the DH, and moved to CF late in the game.  You might want to check that box score out.  ATL\'s is a mess, while Torre stuck with the same 9 he started with.  Great example of AL v NL contrast.

I will say this about last nights game, it is definately not the way I expected to end up.  I thought there would be a much bigger battle involved.  Honestly though, I was sad to see Pedro go but he had a tendency of doing shit like that in a few important high pressure games. IE Yankee stadium, it seemed he couldn\'t handle it, and he couldn\'t deal with pitching against his still good friends, and shit a catcher who caught him for years, You could see it when Ortiz lined it back up and Pedro had no idea what to do with the ball.  I honestly kinda felt bad for him esp after that Homer as the crowd was chanting "Peeeedro Peeedro"

but tonight shoud be a good matchup between two seasoned pitchers, with no emotional attachment

6/29/06 Red Sox 4, Mets 2.  Sox win 12th straight.

What a gorgeous game tonight.  The Sox beat the NL team at their own game.  How about that bunt single > stolen base > sac bunt > sac fly for the go-ahead run in the 7th?  Beautiful.  How about 7 innings of great starting pitching from Schilling, then 2 sit-em-down innings to finish from Timlin and Papelbon.  Textbook.  And a plays-of-the-week-lock layout by Crisp.  Also have to love Ortiz\' "F-U Beltran" homerun, hit to the same part of the park but 10 rows deeper.

Mets: Go back to playing your crappy division in your crappy league in your crappy stadium.  You are not ready for the Big Dogs.  Not even close.  Go home.

The 2006 New York Mets: The Most Over-Hyped Team Ever.  And if you try to say that they\'re actually good and not overhyped, that only further proves my point that they are overhyped.  How can I think so illogically?  Because I\'m a clown-shoe wearing tool from upstate New York.  That\'s how. rotfl rotfl rotfl Thank you thank you I\'ll be here all season :)

The 1000th show was overhyped.......

The mets are NOT.

they just had a bad series.

They were the only team in the majors who had not been swept or even lost 3 in a row till this series.

It was bound to happen eventually.

And it happened to a great team who is on a huge winning streak and playing perfect baseball.

Sox got swept by the twins and lost 3 games in a row two other times this year.

I\'d like to see the sox come to shea when the mets are on a 10 game win streak and see what happens.

So this series really means close to NOTHING unless of course your a cocky bozo masshole red sox goon (i.e. wolfgirl)

wolfman has made this argument on here many times, Papi is not a bad first baseman, and has playe dfirst base for a majority of games during interleague play and they had an unbeleivable record during that run and went something like 14 games without an error.  So yes, you can say he\'s known for his bat, but that doesn\'t mean he\'s a bad fielder.
Title: The ONE and ONLY 2006 Baseball Thread!!
Post by: antbach on July 04, 2006, 12:30:36 pm
I, as a Yankee fan, made an arguement about Ortiz not being a bad fielder. Do I think he deserves to be on the All Star team? Sure, starting at first? Nope. I also think Varitek should definitely NOT be the starter for the AL team either or on the team at all this year, nor should Pudge have gotten the starting nod. This is not because I am a Yankees fan. This is due to Minnesota being snubbed at both positions this year. The numbers speak for themselves:

For the catchers:

Pudge: .301, 7 HR, 38 RBI, 38 Runs, 128 Total Bases
Varitek: .245, 8 HR, 39 RBI, 32 Runs, 93 Total Bases
Posada: .288, 11 HR, 43 RBI, 32 Runs, 110 Total Bases
JOE MAUER: .391, 6 HR, 41 RBI, 45 Runs, 148 Total Bases

I\'m happy to see that Mauer made the team over Varitek and Posada, but he should definitely be the starter. The kid is a stud and will be the best catcher in the league for many years to come, sorry Jason, Pudge, Jorge, your time is over.

For 1B (including Ortiz\'s numbers):
Ortiz: .273, 26 HR, 75 RBI, 58 Runs, 175 Total Bases
Konerko: .311, 20 HR, 63 RBI, 51 Runs, 168 Total Bases
Thome: .288, 27 HR, 68 RBI, 63 Runs, 166 Total Bases
JUSTIN MORNEAU: .298, 22 HR, 71 RBI, 45 Runs, 165 Total Bases

Thome and Ortiz are pretty much both DHs. Konerko\'s #\'s are normal for him. Morneau, who didn\'t even get a roster spot, deserves to be there. He\'s only 25, his numbers are right up there with those three who made it at 1B,  and are better than the other high profile 1B in the AL (Giambi). Ortiz wins the fans vote, sure, but I\'d give the kid the start, seeing as if the game is tied or close in the later innings we all know Ortiz is the best clutch hitter in the game, and the All Star game is a game to be played to win these days.

Seeing as I am talking highly of the young guys in the twin cities, don\'t get me started on Liriano not making it. . .

Oh, I\'ll be watchin\'.

Six Mets make the team with four starters, even though Reyes\'s injury means there will just be three in the lineup. Go National League!

As far as last night, David Wright and Ortiz each had great first rounds, but clearly wore down as the night progressed. But there\'s no shame in losing to Ryan Howard, who has the most homers at the All-Star Break of any second-year player in MLB history. Still, Wright\'s 16 bombs in the first round was something to behold. Now get some hits tonight and stop this damn AL winning streak!

Yanks sweep White Sox!
1/2 game back from the BoSox in the division
3 games back from the White in the wildcard.

They needed this big time!  They were virtually out of the wild card race until absolutely hammering the world champs, and thanks to the ever scrappy Oakland A\'s, the division gap is closed as well!

Sunday\'s NYY starting outfield: Melky Cabrera, Bubba Crosby, Aaron Guiel.  A far cry from Matsui, Damon, Sheffield, but both Cabrera and Guiel made great throws for rally killing outs.

I hold my breath as we roll the dice with Sidney "Punch Out" Ponson.

Red Sox acquire Lopez from Baltimore

The Red Sox had been in the market for a starting backstop since Jason Varitek went down with a knee injury, and on Friday they addressed that concern by picking up three-time All-Star catcher Javy Lopez from the Baltimore Orioles.

Lopez batted .265 with 8 home runs and 31 RBI in 76 games for the Orioles this season. He appeared in 53 games as designated hitter and caught 21 games.

How about a fuckin pitcher, I mean this is great and all, but we are still in desperate need of pitching, but I think everyone kinda is.....

Well, this thread is carried by Red Sox, Yankees, and Mets fans.  And while all 3 teams are in playoff contention, every baseball fan knows that all 3 of these teams are completely illegitimate as championship contenders this year.  When it\'s this obvious that none of these teams are making the World Series (OK the Mets have a shot but they\'ll get swept by anybody from the AL), everyone holds back their comments for fear of being "the guy who talked the most trash before his team went down."  If we had any White Sox, Tigers, A\'s, Reds, or Cardinals fans on here then we\'d have a thread, but we don\'t.  At this point in the season it\'s clear enough what\'s going to become of the Yanks, Sox, and Mets that nobody wants to talk too much.

Title: Pitchie\'s Breakdown
Post by: ChrisPitch on August 12, 2006, 12:14:20 pm
Well, it\'s not a nervous breakdown, but anyone who engages in hyperbole which suggests the Mets would be swept by any AL team (i.e. the Royals, who recently posted their own sweep against one faltering squad) is clearly nervous. So to put everybody at ease, I will now briefly \'break down\' the strengths and weaknesses of a few of baseball\'s best teams, and hopefully, steer this thread towards legitimate baseball discussion. No really, it\'s my pleasure.

Rivera and their lineup alone make the Yankees a contender. Their starting pitching isn\'t great, and you have to worry about Johnson, but it\'s still better than a lot of teams. They\'re in first place despite missing two of their key offensive components. They\'re one of the AL\'s frontrunners and can make a case to win it all, as much as that would sicken me.

Detroit may have the best pitching in baseball. They also hit a ton and have a renewed attitude with playoff-savvy Jim Leyland as their manager. The same people who say they\'re not for real are the same people who said this about the White Sox last year.

Speaking of the White Sox, I personally don\'t think their starting pitching will hold up, but like the Yankees, their dominating closer in Jenks and their slugging offense makes them contenders. And let\'s not forget, they are defending World Series champions, having swept the Red Sox along that path.

And yes, the Red Sox. Well, Beckett gives up five homers a night, Papelbon can\'t save every game, and Wells bleeds vanilla pudding. Their pitching is extremely suspect, but then again, if you looked at their roster at the start of the season, you already knew that. Unfortunately, their lineup makes them contenders, especially considering the mediocrity of most other team\'s pitching. That said, I stick by my preseason prediction that they will not make the playoffs.

The Mets are as balanced as any team in baseball, featuring starters with a wealth of postseason experience, a solid closer, tons of speed, and a lineup to be feared. They\'re clearly the favorite to emerge from the NL and are as strong a World Series contender as is there is in the game. Their record and domination of their division cannot be dismissed despite the weakness of the NL.

The Cardinals likely represent the best threat to knock off the Mets, but their pitching is lacking and their offense seems to be down a notch from previous seasons.

World Series Prediction: Mets over Yankees

At Pec\'s barbecue on 8/19 after the Sox lost their third straight to the Yankees, I threw in the towel.  No seriously, I got the attention of everyone around the beer-pong table (about 25 assorted Sox and Yankees fans), grabbed my towel, threw it down, and proclaimed that I was throwing in the towel on the 2006 Red Sox.  You can\'t make it any more official than actually doing it in front of 25 people.

It\'s O-vah!  The Red Sox just aren\'t very good this year.  Too bad.  The postseason will be very entertaining up to the World Series, as there is no favorite or even a standout in either league.  Congratulations to [insert AL team here] on the 2006 championship!

It\'s really sad though, cause comin out of the all star break we were fuckin on FIRE! then Veriteck and Nixon went down.  Veriteck being such a HUGE part of that team, the results were visable immediatly, we picked up Lopez but he\'s not exactly a great catcher.  Certainly not Veriteck caliber.  When a team is so quick to get rid of a player you gotta wonder why, I mean the sox are only paying half his contract.

It\'s sucks I really felt good about this season for awhile too.  Then everything fell apart.  Ah well here we go again with the pre 2004 saying "there\'s always next year"

As a Yankee fan I couldn\'t be more pleased with how this series went.
I said before the series started, that the Yanks grind it out style of seeing alot of pitches works best in a long series.  A double header, a rain delay, all works toward the strategy of wearing down a pitching staff.  With that in mind, the player I think Red Sox missed the most is Tim Wakefield.  Pitch counts are irrevelant with him, so it usually throws a wrench in the Yankees strategy. I was glad not to see him.

There is still this afternoons game.

I am very happy with the way the Yankees have played all weekend. Great bats all weekend and a couple of come from behinds. Every game has been a lot of fun to watch. I must comment that Abreu has made this line-up what it was suppose to be. A-Rod still sucks IMO, he is nothing I thought he would be.

Last night I counted pitches through the lineup the first time for the Yankees and its no wonder why the runs are coming in, they literally wear out the pitchers, doesn\'t hurt either when Giambi has a multi-homer game.

The Red Sox were done when they didn\'t improve their pitching (rotation or bullpen) at the trade deadline... nor did they really attempt to as far as I know.  But it is nice to make it official.  At least my hopes and aspirations can go to bed a little earlier than usual this year.

Derek Jeter is going to be the MVP this year, and for that the rest of the Red Sox owe both David Ortiz and Manny Ramirez (my pick for MVP) an apology.

"The Yankees really blew it this weekend. Sure, they won four straight over Boston at Fenway Park to increase their lead in the AL East to a seemingly insurmountable 5½ games, but everyone knows that baseball is a marathon, not a sprint. All the Yankees did by knocking the Red Sox starters out early in the first three games of the series was give the Boston rotation more time to rest for the stretch run. Real swift, Joe Torre. You were out-managed. Again"

Congrats to the Mets.  Being a Red Sox fan of only 21 years of age, I don\'t really remember what it\'s like to win a division title.

I\'ve asked plenty of Mets fans (or is that Met fans) if it means anything since it has been a forgone conclusion since June (or earlier).  Apparently not.  Enjoy it, and pray that you don\'t face the Padres (Peavy, Young, Wells... ouch) in the NLDS.

In an unrelated story (related to baseball, but not the Mets), I refuse to give up on the Red Sox just yet (for the wild card, of course) until they are eight or more games back.  Hopefully the Twins can put me out of my optimistic misery by the weekend.

I\'m just surprised that the frikin baseball thread was crickets from August 23rd to September 19th, right when things get really interesting.  I guess I carry the thread...I mean, I made my throwing-in-the-towel post in mid August and all was quiet after that.  Pitchie thanks for being the only Met fan to show up.  Where are the other Met fans?  Yankee fans, how pumped up are you after purchasing your 10th straight AL East Title?  (The evidence is abundant...Yankee fans just don\'t enjoy rooting for the Yankees that much.  It makes sense; How can it possibly be that exciting?)  Cmon people it\'s late September!

Also if your team is out, who do you temporarily adopt as your team to pull for?  For me it\'s my go-to 2nd choice team...

And on that note....

LET\'S GO METS!  20 years is too long to wait!  And we didn\'t even deserve to win in \'86 so we stilll need a solid no-doubt-about-it championship to justify the existence of the franchise!  GOOOOOOOOOO METS!

Great the Mets won the division after 14 years of Braves dominance.  My question is why were they celebrating like that had just won the world series given the fact they had the division supposedly wrapped up like 3 months ago.  Its just too bad they probably won\'t be celebrating like this when they lose to the Tigers/Twins in the World Series.  And to all you Mets fans don\'t get too comfortable in first place, you still got 13 more to go and next season won\'t be so easy, well at least I hope not.

See what I mean people?  The Yankees are about to win a division title and all you can get from Yankee Fan is an eyeroll.  Nothing to say about the team, not excited for the playoffs, not really having much fun in general.  I can kind of understand Yankee Fan\'s indifference though because the Patriots are approaching the same territory.  Hey, Pats win...*yawn*.  The difference is that the Pats somehow do it against a level, salary-capped playing field, so at least their wins are an accomplishment rather than a forgone conclusion secured through exploiting an insurmountable unfair advantage.  The Sports Guy put it perfectly; rooting for the Yankees is like rooting for the house in blackjack.

I wish that I could cheer for the Mets, I really do.  But I live with three Met fans who would be so obnoxious that it would be unbearable.  Thus I am cheering for a "New York-less" World Series.

right on

meanwhile i hope the Twins A\'s series goes the distance so the Lions vs. Vikings game moves to MOnday night and they broadcast it on ESPN. I mean who the hell wants to see those 4-0 Ravens anyways.

MLB Playoff Predications:

Mets over Dodgers 3-1
Cardinals over Padres 3-2
A\'s over Twins 3-1 (but probably 3-0)
Tigers over Yankees 3-1

Divisional Series:

Mets over Cardinals 4-2
Tigers over A\'s 4-3

World Series:

Tigers over Mets 4-2

yes the Red Sox season is over and yes this is a thread for \'06 but I though this was interesting news anyway.

Quote
JONATHAN PAPELBON
Red Sox GM Theo Epstein confirmed Sunday that Jonathan Papelbon would enter spring training as a starting pitcher.
Epstein said that it\'s the opinion of the medical staff that the switch would be the best thing for Papelbon\'s long-term health. A rotation including Curt Schilling, Josh Beckett, Papelbon and Tim Wakefield looks good on paper, but the Red Sox will have to add quality relievers and there are few out there in free agency. The club could look to take a chance on Eric Gagne or Kerry Wood, but it could use a couple of sure things, too.

Go ahead and say it. Due to least coast bias you may not be aware of our Pitching staff.

ERA 3.87  1st in NL
Opponent BA .249 1st in NL

Overall in the 15 catogories they use to figure this shit out The Pads staff is 1st or 2nd in 12 of the catagories.
Pitching wins championships.
See ya in Nov.!!!!!

The Yankees face the easiest postseason they have ever gone through.  I like them to take the Tigers in 3, the Twins in 6 (or A\'s in 5), and any AAAA (NL) team in 5.  That\'s 11-3, or 11-2 if they get the A\'s in the ALCS.  No way they lose more than 4 games.  This should be a breeze.

How about my 2nd team, those M-E-T-S METS METS METS!  omg Pedro goes down, El Duque goes down, and Trachsel leaves the team all in the last 3 days of the season.  Unreal.  The Mets just cruised to their first NL East title in like 15 years and no Met fan will show their face.  Not to mention that this had to happen in a year that features the worst pool of NL playoff teams in history.  The table was all set.  A healthy Mets club would sweep St. Louis, LA, and might not allow a Padre to safely reach third base at all.  There are some conductors on the 7 train to Flushing that won\'t be getting that OT money they thought they were!

Dicey throughout, and I still can\'t believe Willie let Guillermo Mota, a relief pitcher, bat with the bases loaded, but after everything the Mets have been through, they clearly needed the opening win. It was exciting game to watch. And an exhausting one. We can only wonder what would have happened if the Dodgers didn\'t botch the play at home.

Suggestions for the 2006 offseason:

Joe Torre- It\'s time to go. I welcome the Pinella rumors.  Torre\'s a laisse-faire manager.  That\'s perfect for some veteran teams, but it might be time for an ass kicker again.  Retire #6, and put up his monument, but we need to shake things up.

A-Rod- Shop him.  There are plenty of good young Yankees, that if you can get 2-3 quality young ball players in return (like maybe a catcher? Jorge isn\'t getting any younger) you can stay competitive and semi-rebuild at the same time.

Randy Johnson- Please, PLEASE retire. I have a bad feeling he\'ll continue to disgrace himself for another year, but I can only hope.

Gary Sheffield- Thanks for everything, but Melky needs to play.

And on positive note:

Robinson Cano, Chien Ming Wang, Melky Cabrera and Scott Proctor all really came through this year.  Jeter was great as usual, and Damon was the best free agent signing they\'ve made since Mussina.

Well I was right about one thing: They only lost 3 games!!  rotfl  What a sorry disgusting pathetic franchise.  Every year at this time I make the same post about how they ripoff their fans worse than any franchise in sports, overcharging them and then wasting hundreds of millions of dollars on total stiffs.  Steinbrenner and Cashman are too dumb to scout legit talent, all they know how to do is overpay for names.  And they keep doing it because Yankee fans are too dumb to know any better, they just slobber over the next over-paid steroid-popping stiff to come through the door.  If you\'re a Yankee fan, look in the mirror and repeat after me: "I root for Alex Rodriguez.  I root for Jason Giambi.  I root for Gary Sheffield.  I root for Randy Johnson."  How the hell do you live with yourself rooting for a franchise this blatantly evil and underachieving and wasteful?

Not sorry to see those Red Sox castoff frauds the Padres go down either.  Josh Bard hits fourth on that team?!?!  They probably broke their own record from last year for worst team to ever make the playoffs.  (Remember last year when they had to win the last game of the year to finish over .500 and still won the division?)  The only reason I don\'t like them is because the one Padres fan I know is the biggest d-bag ever born, but hey, that\'s reason enough.  Mets win, Yankees lose, Padres lose.  Gorgeous first round.  M-E-T-S METS METS METS!

I agree with all of your points.  You even have a good chance at getting 3 out of 4.  The one that has no chance of happening is A-Rod.  You\'re so stuck with him it\'s not even funny.  Like any franchise is gonna give up their future for that shmuck.  The Yankees are the ones who will have to send 2-3 good young players to a team just so they\'ll take A-Fraud.  Here\'s how a conversation with Yankees GM Brian Cashman and San Diego GM Kevin Towers might sound:

Cashman: We\'ll give you A-Rod for Cla Meredith and Josh Bard.
Towers: Fuck you.
Cashman: OK, A-Rod for nothing, all you gotta do is take him and pay him.
Towers: Brian, that guy will make my team worse just like he did for all three teams he\'s been on.  Not only is his contract the most expensive ever, it is far, far, far, far, far and away the worst value of any contract in baseball history.
Cashman: OK, we\'ll toss in Wang.  Wang and A-Rod for a box of baseballs.
Towers: Well, we could use a #8 hitter, especially seeing how our lineup is stacked 1-7.  OK, deal!

Good game last night. The Cards scored a morale boosting by not getting slaughtered with Weaver on the mound. Let\'s see what the ace can do tonight!

Well, after Friday\'s bullpen meltdown and Trachsel\'s disgraceful performance in Game 3, it\'s safe to say last night\'s win was fairly important. Let\'s Go Mets!

(scheduler at espn): Paul, can you stay late on saturday?
Paul: sure, what am I doing?
(scheduler at espn): editing
Paul: OK, but for what?
(scheduler at espn): Baseball tonight.
Paul: I\'ll need to get some notes on it, I\'ve never worked on that show before.
(scheduler at espn): It wont be hard, don\'t worry, I\'ll have them shoot you an email tomorrow about what you need to do.
Paul: Allright. What am I actually going to be cutting though? the seasons almost over.
(scheduler at espn): Nothing big, Game one of the world series.
Paul: Gee, Thanks... nothing like jumping in feet first there, hu?

:idunno::banghead::doh::sigh:
ah, whatever. It wouldn\'t be the first time they\'ve done this kind of thing to me. :P

Well that sucks.  I was pulling pretty hard for the Mets.  I thought Beltran was gonna pull it out up until strike 2.  At least a hit to tie.  F the Cardinals, who the hell likes them?

World Series: Tigers in 4.  In fact, not only Tigers in 4, but the Tigers may repeat what the Red Sox did to the Cardinals in \'04 and never be behind for even one half inning in any game of the World Series.

The Cardinals: The Fans\' Choice

   By WILL LEITCH
Special to THE WALL STREET JOURNAL ONLINE
   October 22, 2004 11:09 a.m.

Larry Walker has played major league baseball since 1989, hit 378 home
runs and once even volunteered to play for the Canadian national team, which
is insane even though he is, in fact, Canadian. Considered one of
baseball\'s most respected stars, he turned down countless trade requests from
contenders wanting to get him out of Colorado, citing his no-trade
clause and love for Denver. Until this year, when the St. Louis Cardinals came
calling. Walker, a family man, extremely popular in Colorado, reconsidered immediately.
"My wife had a lot to do with it," he said. "I told her about it, and she
started crying before I even said yes." In his first at-bat, Walker received
a standing ovation. He struck out. He then received another one. "It was  amazing," Walker said.

No city in baseball, perhaps all of sports, loves its team more than St.
Louis loves the Cardinals. Even more, no team in sports succeeds because
of its fans. Much has been written about the competitive economic disparity
in baseball, how small market teams like Kansas City can\'t compete against
major metropolitan areas. But look at the two cities\' estimated
populations as of July 1, 2003:

   Kansas City: 442,768.
   St. Louis: 332,223.

The Cardinals do not have their own cable station. They do not have
owners who made billions selling their dot-com. They are building a stadium
with their own money. They have the seventh-highest payroll in the game
despite having fewer people than Portland. Why? Because of their fans. Busch
Stadium has passed the three million mark in attendance six times in the last
seven years, the team\'s merchandise sells better than every team\'s but the Red
Sox, Yankees and Cubs and the team is regularly one of the top draws on
the road as well. Without such devotion, the Cardinals are the Royals. The
fans are devoted enough to offset the economic shortcomings.

Cardinal fans do more than just fill the coffers, though. St. Louis GM
Walt Jocketty has built the current team (the best in two generations) not by
the draft, or by free agency: He has built it mostly through trades -- and
it is one thing to trade for a player; it is another to convince him to stay,
often for under market value. Enter the fans. Mark McGwire, Scott Rolen
and Jim Edmonds came to the Cardinals right as they were approaching free
agency; all it took was one week in a Redbird uniform for them to sign
long-term deals. The second day in uniform, Edmonds was asked about the
Cardinals fans and said, "I want to kiss the ground every day for having
   come here."

And the fans support their Cardinals no matter how they\'re playing. They
are not fickle; just loyal. How long do you think a tortured soul like Rick
Ankiel would have survived in New York or Boston? Five wild pitches in a
postseason game? A complete meltdown on the grandest scale? They would
have set him on fire -- at best. In St. Louis, he was never booed or blasted
on talk radio. Fans were actually worried about him. After a three-year
sojourn in the minor-league and rehab wilderness, Ankiel returned in September
of this season. Hard feelings? Of course not. He received a deafening
standing ovation in his first game back, an ovation that took so long the umpires
   actually stopped the game.

In an age when fans constantly complain about out-of-touch players and
an excessively corporate atmosphere at the ballpark, no team is more
connected with its fans and no team\'s fans have more power than in St. Louis.
The Cardinals are the company in a company town.

And now they\'re in the World Series, and it occurs to me that this essay
has been far too logical and sober. This is a team that has gone through
heartbreak (the in-season death of Darryl Kile in 2002; the loss of
legendary broadcast Jack Buck just a week earlier) and has emerged
triumphant, while being underestimated by the rest of the world, who
were all agog over their Fuzzy Cubbie rivals to the north. The Cardinals are
everything that is right about America: modest, professional (watch
Rolen when he hits a home run; he just puts his head down and runs to
first, just punching in, doing his job) and based in the fundamentals of hard
work and rock-solid consistency. And not a single player on the team has hair
that looks like a Simpson\'s character.

And that\'s not to mention Albert Pujols. I mean, have you seen that guy?

So ... For Willie McGee. For Jose Oquendo. For Glenn Brummer. For
Darrell Porter. For Darryl Kile. For Jack Buck. Go Cardinals. That\'s a winner.
   Go crazy, folks.

:P yea, I know/knew he was, but I didn\'t feel like doing the searches to confirm it. I\'ll tell you one thing - mlb would have much rather had the mets in it. either new york team, or boston = $$$ revenue in comercials and viewership. Even last year with the white soxs breaking a curse, ratings and viewership was way, way down. These teams means alot less money than the mets would have. Nothing against the cardinals, they are a good team and now that they are not playing the red sox, it\'s ok if they win. ;)
Title: The Aftermath
Post by: ChrisPitch on October 23, 2006, 10:46:43 am
I would like to say that despite the Mets’ domination of the National League East, their 97-win season, and the obvious upswing the franchise is on, I still consider this year to be a massive disappointment. My expectation was for the Mets to win the World Series and the fact that they didn’t hurts me a great deal. They didn’t hit in the clutch, their bullpen—especially their closer—failed them, and they don’t deserve to make it to the World Series, let alone win it. Game 7 was the most heartbreaking experience I’ve ever had as a sports fan.

Carlos at the Bat
By Steve Hofstetter
10/23/06

The outlook was delightful for the Flushing Nine that day
They\'d tied it up three games a piece with one still left to play
The Cardinals, Mets, the LCS, a chance at pennant glory
But I\'ll rewind a bit for now and tell the background story

Mets fans were happy, coming in, and boy they had good reason
Their team rolled through the Grapefruit League, then rolled right through the season.
But with Pedro out and Duque gone, they realized their worst fears
They backed into October as banged up as Britney Spears

But the Mets looked tough, these playoffs, after sweeping up the Dodgers
Despite a pitching staff as lame as \'90s Kenny Rogers
They took Game 1 right from the Cards, the Cards then took two more
Before the Mets could plate a dozen runners in Game Four

With Glavine on just three days rest, Game 5 would be a battle
But rains came down, and down, and down (the field looked like Seattle)
Game 1 saw Glavine pitch a gem, Tom looked like vintage Seaver
But Game 5 would be different as he couldn\'t outpitch Weaver

Perhaps with too much rest, the bats dozed off and lost Game 5.
Though the next day they woke up and took Game 6 to stay alive.
The Mets now had a chance to win, a chance at baseball heaven
To face the Tigers in Detroit (if they could win Game 7

The Cards threw Suppan, easy choice, but on the other hand
The Mets rotation held with packing tape and rubber bands
Perez went for the Metsies, he\'d won three and lost 13
His 6-5-5 earned runs per game, the highest baseball\'s seen

Perhaps he had adrenaline, or did it just because
Perhaps he had amnesia and forgot just who he was
With hopes and dreams of fans and all his teammates on the line
Whatever spurred on Oliver; Perez? He pitched just fine.

When Ollie left the mound and gave his manager the ball
The seventh game was knotted up, the score was still 1-all
Two Cardinal runs erased when Chavez flew like he was Wendy
His leaping catch insured that inning six came to an Endy

And tied it stood in inning nine, a Heilman strike-palooza
Their bats, his balls got on as well as Rolen and La Russa
But then a sudden silence fell across the Shea arena
The tie was gone; a two run blast by Yadier Molina.

Was this the end? Could this be it? Were World Champ dreams now crushed?
The Amazins mazed? The Mets been Met? The boys from Flushing, flushed?
With three outs left, could they still find a weakness to explot?
The one rare time the promised land could be known as "Detroit"?

Jose led off the ninth -- a hit! And Endy echoed hit!
But Cliff limped off the field with called strike three now in the mitt
And Reyes didn\'t fare so well, now two out and two on
With all the hopes of coming back to win now all but gone

But wait, Lo Duca walked! Potential winning run! Crowd roaring!
(I\'m not the first to notice that man\'s excellent at scoring)
The bases juiced, but two men out -- It\'s not exactly easy
But if anyone could bring them home, his name\'s Carlos Beltreezie

You could hear it in the stands and you could hear it in the booth
In October vs the Cardinals, Beltran may as well be Ruth.
Like picking up an ace of spades with four kings in your hand
Unless a royal flush comes up, we go to Disneyland

The Hall of Science, Tennis Center, Unisphere are dark
No Botanics in the Garden, and no Terrace on the Park
In St. Louis, men are laughing. In Detroit, the children shout,
But there is no joy in Flushing -- mighty Carlos soon struck out.

Yet this isn\'t where the story ends, not even close or near
Like the Dodgers did before them, now the Mets wait til next year
If the Cards were hurt, and not the Mets, we\'d be 1969ing.
They\'d be back home in Missouri, hearing more of Albert\'s whining.

I will say it here in print and I will say it next aloud
The Mets battled, scraped, and fought, and played, and lost -- and made me proud.
With a healthy staff and confidence, they\'ll wrestle for a ring

Red Sox signed RHP Daisuke Matsuzaka to a six-year, $52 million contract.
The Matsuzaka addition would seem to give the Red Sox a rotation with as much upside as any in baseball. Still, time will tell whether Josh Beckett will bounce back and whether Jonathan Papelbon will hold up as a starter. Our guess is that Matsuzaka will post the best ERA on the staff, finishing in the 3.50-3.80 range. He should be a top-20 fantasy starter.
