Boston\'s Tavarez punches D-Rays\' Gathright
By Howard Ulman, AP Sports Writer | March 27, 2006
FORT MYERS, Fla. --The Red Sox are ready for the opening bell. One week before their first regular-season game, excitable reliever Julian Tavarez punched Tampa Bay outfielder Joey Gathright lightly in the jaw Monday during a play at home plate Monday, the latest flareup between the teams.
Players ran from benches and bullpens but no injuries were reported as they clutched opponents and tried to keep their teammates from going after the other side.
The action came one day after Red Sox pitcher Josh Beckett yelled at Philadelphia\'s Ryan Howard when the right-hander thought the first baseman took too long to watch what he may have thought was a homer but ended up being a long fly out.
Players ran on the field then, too, after Howard went to his spot at first base for the top of the seventh, threw his glove down, looked into Boston\'s dugout, talked back to Beckett and walked toward him. Beckett was restrained before he stepped back onto the field and no one threw any punches or shoves.
In Boston\'s 12-11 win, which ended when Hee-Seop Choi walked with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth, Gathright raced home while Julio Lugo was caught in a rundown between first and second in the eighth. Second baseman Zach Borowiak threw to Tavarez, who tagged Gathright out as the outfielder slid.
Gathright said Tavarez stood on his right forearm after the tag. Tavarez agreed but said he wanted to beat Gathright to the punch.
"I saw him try to get up and I wasn\'t going to let him throw a punch at me right away," said Tavarez, who threw a second punch on the top of Gathright\'s head. "You hear about whoever throws the first punch gets the win. That\'s what happened."
In the Devil Rays clubhouse, Gathright rolled up his right sleeve to show a small scratch on his right forearm. He said he had pushed Tavarez\'s left knee to try to free his arm. But Tavarez drew his fist back with Gathright\'s right knee and hand still on the ground.
"It just kind of grazed the jaw," Gathright said.
Both players were calm after the game.
Gathright said "we\'ll forget about it tomorrow." Tavarez said, "I don\'t know if I hit him good or not. I just wish that would\'ve never happened."
Tampa Bay designated hitter Jonny Gomes said he hopes no bad blood remains between the teams when they play April 18 in Boston.
"I hope not," he said. "but we\'re grown men out here and you never know who\'s holding a grudge."
In the bottom of the eighth, Choi was hit by a pitch by Wayne Franklin, but Red Sox manager Terry Francona said it didn\'t appear to be intentional. Still, both benches were warned.
The Red Sox and Devil Rays have been involved in several brawls. Tavarez is in his first season with Boston.
Four players and both managers were suspended for their role in a game last April 24 in which pitchers from both teams intentionally hit batters, sparking a fight.
On Sept. 27, 2004, two players from each team were hit by pitches and players ran onto the field.
In August 2000, eight Devil Rays and no Red Sox were ejected when Tampa Bay\'s Gerald Williams charged Boston pitcher Pedro Martinez, who had hit him with a pitch.
Monday\'s brawl "had nothing to do with history," Tampa Bay manager Joe Maddon said. "That may require suspension, absolutely. That kind of action cannot be tolerated."
Tavarez, who played for St. Louis the past two seasons, broke the fourth finger and bones in his left hand when he tried to trash the bench after allowing a tiebreaking homer in Houston\'s victory in the fourth game of the 2004 ALCS.
"He punched the phone," Cardinals manager Tony La Russa said.
On Monday he punched Gathright, a move he said he regretted.
"I\'m not a fighting guy," Tavarez said, "I get along with my teammates and everybody, but when you\'re on the field, you know, things happen."
Gathright said he couldn\'t do much with Tavarez standing on his arm.
"I was like, `Get off my arm,\' and he wouldn\'t move," Gathright said. "It\'s spring training and he\'s known for something, so nobody really cares. I could care less. I\'ll get over this. Hopefully, everybody else does."
Both starting pitchers struggled, with Boston\'s David Wells allowing six runs in four innings and Tampa Bay\'s Casey Fossum giving up 10 runs in 4 1-3 innings. Boston led 7-0 after two innings, 7-6 after three and 10-6 after five. Tampa Bay tied it with four runs in the eighth -- Ty Winnington\'s RBI single making it 10-10.
Tim Corcoran walked the last two batters in the ninth, giving Boston the win.
Gomes and Boston\'s Mark Loretta had three hits each. Gomes hit his third exhibition homer and Toby Hall hit his second, both in the third against Wells.
didi you read the whole thing?? I"m not absolving either side here I think the whole thing is fuckin crazy but it looks like both sides hold a little blame.

CINCINNATI --Ken Griffey Jr.\'s 537th career homer got upstaged by Bronson Arroyo\'s first. Arroyo got the loudest and longest ovations Wednesday -- and a respectful bow from Griffey -- in a successful Cincinnati debut. He pitched into the seventh inning and hit his first career homer in his first at-bat, leading the Reds to an 8-6 victory over the Chicago Cubs.
"I\'ll take that 50 times over," Arroyo said.
His do-it-all debut overshadowed a big moment for Griffey, who moved ahead of two Yankees with his first homer of the season.
Griffey\'s solo shot was his 537th, breaking a tie with Mickey Mantle for 12th on the career list. It also provided his 1,538th RBI, moving him ahead of Joe DiMaggio for 31st on that list, which doesn\'t include anything before 1920, when RBIs became a statistic.
"Those guys are legends," Griffey said. "You can\'t say enough for those guys and what they\'ve done for baseball. Both of those guys are arguably in the top 10 players in the history of the game."
Although Griffey\'s homer was the more historic, Arroyo\'s was the more memorable. It changed the mood and the music at Great American Ball Park two days after the Cubs opened the season with a 16-7 win.
The Reds got Arroyo from Boston in a trade for popular outfielder Wily Mo Pena on March 20, a move that stunned and unnerved the lanky right-hander. Fans looking for him to prop up the NL\'s worst rotation of 2005 gave Arroyo a loud ovation on opening day.
"I definitely noticed it," Arroyo said. "It just means that people are expecting big things from me. I hope I can come here and satisfy that need for us to have some quality pitching."
His hitting made the first impression.
Arroyo came to bat in the third inning and homered off left-hander Glendon Rusch (0-1), who got ahead 0-2 in the count before throwing a down-the-middle fastball. Arroyo, a .073 career hitter, timed it perfectly.
Everyone knew the ball was gone long before it landed in the left-field seats, 403 feet away. Arroyo dropped his head and rounded the bases briskly, his shoulder-length hair flapping behind his helmet.
"I was in another world after hitting it out," said Arroyo, who hadn\'t hit one since high school.
Griffey waited for him on the top step of the dugout, grabbed the bill of his own batting helmet and bowed in respect over the shocking swing. Griffey noticed that Arroyo\'s batting helmet had protective ear flaps on both sides -- something most hitters frown upon.
"It\'s amazing for a guy hitting with a double ear flap," Griffey said. "I didn\'t know if he hit left-handed or right-handed."
Page 2 of 2 --It was Arroyo\'s first hit since Oct. 2, 2001 at Shea Stadium. Before that swing, he was 4-for-55 career with 33 strikeouts
Led Zeppelin blared over the public address system while Arroyo, a rock guitarist in his off-hours, warmed up to start the game. When he went back to the mound to warm up after his homer, the videoboard showed a replay while Joey Scarbury\'s "Greatest American Hero" played.
"Anytime you come to a new place, everybody wants to be accepted and wanted," he said.
Rich Aurilia and Griffey followed Arroyo\'s homer with their own, helping the Reds pull ahead 7-2 after the fifth inning.
"I fell behind and made a bad combination of pitches," said Rusch, who threw 85 pitches in only four innings. "Once you get behind in the count, you\'ve got to make real good pitches instead of just good ones."
Each team hit three homers Wednesday in a ballpark where a major league-leading 246 flew out last year. The Cubs scored 22 runs in the two games but managed only a split because their pitching staff -- missing injured starters Kerry Wood and Mark Prior -- had control problems.
"We\'ve got to get our bullpen shored up and do what we can until we get our big boys back," manager Dusty Baker said.
Aramis Ramirez hit a two-run homer for his 10th at Great American Ball Park, tying Geoff Jenkins for most by a visiting player. Derrek Lee also hit a two-run shot in the sixth, a couple of pitches after catcher David Ross dropped his foul pop for an error.
Arroyo got two outs in the seventh before Kent Mercker relieved and gave up a pinch two-run homer to John Mabry that cut it to 7-6. David Weathers, who led the staff with 15 saves last year, retired all three batters in the ninth for his first this season.
Notes:@ RBIs weren\'t kept as a statistic before 1920. ... In contrast to the cloudy, blustery opener, the weather was much more favorable Wednesday -- sunny and 54 degrees with a light wind blowing out. ... The crowd of 27,287 cheered loudly whenever left fielder Adam Dunn caught a fly ball. Dunn was jeered on opening day for dropping one and misplaying another. ... Rusch had won his last four decisions in 2005, matching his career high. ... It was Mabry\'s fourth career pinch-hit homer.

Papelbon wins April DHL award
Boston righty converts 10 saves in as many opportunities
BOSTON -- For his perfect 10 during his first month as the closer of the Red Sox, Jonathan Papelbon was recognized on Thursday as Major League Baseball\'s Delivery Man of the Month for April. The award, sanctioned by Major League Baseball and sponsored by DHL, recognizes the most outstanding relief pitcher during each month of the regular season.
It would have been hard to top Papelbon\'s performance, as he was essentially flawless, converting 10 saves in as many opportunities.
Over 14 1/3 innings in April, Papelbon was unscored on and registered 14 strikeouts.
Papelbon\'s performance was impressive enough on its own, but even more so when you consider he wasn\'t even considered the closer when the season started.
But in the third game of the regular season, with the Red Sox holding a 2-1 lead in Texas, manager Terry Francona pulled off what was, at the time, a surprising move, asking Papelbon to close the game instead of Keith Foulke.
"Terry said if the ballgame is close, you\'re going to get the ball in the ninth, so be prepared," said Papelbon, recalling the events of that night. "From there on out, I\'ve basically kind of taken that role upon myself and just tried to do the best I can do."
Papelbon finally gave up a run on Wednesday, suffering a 7-6 loss to the Blue Jays. But his lights-out start in April was something to behold.
The Red Sox view Papelbon as a starting pitcher down the road. But right now, he is too invaluable as the closer.
"I like the competition, the fact that you have to go in there and be successful every day," Papelbon said. "You\'ve got to get outs right then and there -- the pressure is on."
Papelbon might have surprised everyone but himself by performing in such dominant fashion in April.
"I set my goals high. If you were going to tell me I would have had 10 saves and not given up a run, I would have believed it," Papelbon said. "That\'s just the way I go about it. It\'s not cocky, it\'s just confidence. It\'s just me going out there knowing who I am, knowing the pitcher that I am and going out there and executing."
The execution has been uncanny. With a 95-mph heater and a nasty split, opposing batters have looked bewildered trying to solve Papelbon.
The "DHL Presents the Major League Baseball Delivery Man of the Month Award" winner is selected by a special Major League Baseball "yellow-ribbon" panel that includes newly elected Hall of Fame pitcher Bruce Sutter; Lou Piniella, former manager and player; Mike Bauman, national columnist for MLB.com; Jerome Holtzman, the official MLB Historian and a member of the writer\'s wing of the Hall of Fame; and Bob Watson, vice president of on-field operations, Major League Baseball.
At the conclusion of the season, Major League Baseball fans will have the opportunity to determine which relief pitcher had the best overall season through the second annual DHL Presents the Major League Baseball Delivery Man of the Year Award.
A list of finalists will be selected based on statistical qualifiers, and fans will be able to vote for the winner online at MLB.com. Last season, Mariano Rivera of the New York Yankees was named the inaugural recipient of the DHL Presents the Major League Baseball Delivery Man of the Year Award
Some Nuggets from Gammons:
Summary of Comments from ESPN\'s Peter Gammons on WEEI\'s Big Show Today: Gammons thinks there is more hostility toward Pedro Martinez than Johnny Damon, who is a genuine guy. According to Gammons, Pedro is going to take some heat upon his return to Boston and will probably get a little testy before he arrives. Gammons said that unlike Damon, Pedro departed simply because of more money and left Boston guns blazing because of his relationship with Curt Schilling.
Gammons added that David Wells threw well today and will throw again on Sunday. Then he\'ll debate with Sox management about a rehab start. He could be ready in a week to 10 days.
The Red Sox are worried about the double play combination\'s offense, Gammons said. If Alex Gonzalez continues to struggle, Gammons thinks the Sox will call up Dustin Pedroia to play some second base and shortstop, and give them a little offense.
"Does he expect to be booed? \'I hope not, but there are some people... I don\'t know how they feel,\' Martinez told Newsday yesterday. \'Knowing my fans and the relationship I had and how much I expressed how I wanted to stay... it wasn\'t my choice. I wasn\'t given the choice to actually think about, I was pretty much let go.\' " -- 5.3.06, Pedro Martinez: New York Newsday

there, fixed it
I take it you wouldn\'t want David Ortiz on your team, right? Get on here and post that you wouldn\'t want him on your team. By your argument, every pitcher in the league is one-dimesnional because they don\'t hit. Oritz happens to be the amongst the best in the league at the one dimension of hitting, which is half the game of baseball.
Your argument is blinded by the "B" on your hat. You don\'t see me arguing that A-Rod is clutch. Oh, and by the way Sox fans, Ortiz\'s his average is down latley, how long \'til you turn on him Nomar style?

His career stats at the position are not all that bad:

Oh and for the record:
Ortiz is expected to play first base in two of the three weekend games in Philadelphia, the Boston Globe reports.

Red Sox place lefthander Lenny DiNardo on disabled list; recall righthander Jermaine Van Buren from Triple-A Pawtucket
BOSTON -- The Boston Red Sox today announced that lefthanded pitcher Lenny DiNardo has been placed on the 15-day disabled list (retroactive to May 22) with a neck strain. To replace DiNardo on the roster, righthanded pitcher Jermaine Van Buren has been recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket of the International League. Executive Vice President/General Manager Theo Epstein made the announcement.
Van Buren, 25 will wear #46 and be in uniform for tonight\'s game with New York.
DiNardo is 1-2 with a 7.11 earned run average in seven games/five starts with Boston in 2006. The lefthander lost in Philadelphia, 10-5 in his last appearance and start on Sunday.
Van Buren is 1-0 with a 1.17 earned run average (2 ER/15.1 IP) and a team high six saves in 11 appearances at Pawtucket this season. He has issued runs in just one appearance all season while holding opponents to a .192 batting average. In his last three outings the righthander has worked four scoreless innings with a win and two saves.
This is Van Buren\'s second stint with the Red Sox in 2006. He was with Boston from April 14-22, issuing two hits and a run in three innings in his lone appearance on April 22 at Toronto.
Acquired in a trade with the Chicago Cubs on December 1, 2005, Van Buren had a 0-2 record and 3.00 ERA in six outings with the Cubs in 2005 in his only previous major league action. He was originally selected by Colorado in the second round of the 1996 MLB First Year Player Draft before signing as a minor league free agent with the Cubs in January 2004.

Yanks, Red Sox dominating AL votes
Bombers third baseman Alex Rodriguez has the early runaway lead on the ballot, with a 300,000-vote lead over Boston counterpart Mike Lowell. With 524,153 votes, A-Rod\'s real battle appears to be with Jeter for overall vote leadership.
David Ortiz, who would have to take a glove to Pittsburgh since the designated hitter will not be in use in the National League ballpark, leads at first base, his 451,431 votes providing an edge of 120,000 over Jason Giambi -- oddly, another frequent DH.
Showing the power of the pinstripe, Robinson Cano, playing his first big-league season and excelling, has a slight lead over Boston second baseman Mark Loretta at second base. With 289,394 checkmarks, Cano is fewer than 32,000 votes ahead of the former Padres infielder, who is wrapping up a hot first May in the Nation.
Yankees and Red Sox also lead at the two other infield positions, although their main competition comes from other precincts.
At catcher, Boston\'s Jason Varitek and the Yankees\' Jorge Posada are separated by 114,000 votes -- and by Detroit\'s Ivan Rodriguez, whose 277,034 votes trail Varitek by 58,000. Posada is 36,000 further behind I-Rod, a perennial All-Star.
Among outfielders, former Fenway neighbors Manny Ramirez and Johnny Damon are 123,000 votes apart. However, Ramirez\'s early lead is tenuous, with the Angels\' Vladimir Guerrero trailing by fewer than 2,000 votes.
Ramirez leads with 516,658, and Damon checks in with 393,643.

Johnson to Sox
By David Lefort, Boston.com Staff
The Red Sox added another arm today, trading for struggling Indians righthander Jason Johnson, who has eight losses and an ERA around 6.00 for the season. The Sox get Johnson and cash consideration in the deal in exchange for a player to be named later and cash.
Johnson’s role is not immediately known, though he could be given a shot to be the team’s fifth starter. To make room for him on the roster, the Red Sox optioned righthander Kyle Snyder to Triple-A Pawtucket.
The 32-year-old Johnson, who was designated for assignment yesterday, was 3-8 with a 5.96 ERA in 14 starts for the Indians this season and is 1-8 with a 7.38 ERA in his last 10 starts. Johnson, signed in the offseason after two years with Detroit, has allowed 10 homers and 108 hits in 77 innings. The 10-year veteran has a career record of 55-94 with a 4.95 ERA in 229 appearances (213 as a starter).
The Indians will pay most of his $3.5 million salary for this season. He had a one-year contract that had mutual options for either party to get out of it in 2007.
What’s to like about Johnson? The Red Sox were quick to point out his great ground ball-to-fly ball ratio (2.85 to 1, third in the American League). He has finished in the top 10 in the AL in that category in each of the last three seasons.
The 6-foot-6, 225-pound journeyman has spent time in Pittsburgh (1997), Tampa Bay (1998), Baltimore (1999-2003), Detroit (2004-05) and Cleveland (2006).
Johnson and righty Paul Byrd were signed by Cleveland as free agents before the season to help make up for the loss of Kevin Millwood, who signed with Texas. But Johnson was ineffective again Monday when he allowed two homers in a 12-8 loss to the Chicago Cubs.
He had an 8-13 record and 4.54 ERA with the Tigers last season.
I\'m confident that they can win the World Series.

Tonight is gonna be the game to snooze through, Pedro vs. Beckett,
Dear Mets Fans:
So please understand that it pains me greatly to declare the following truths to be self-evident:
-The 2006 Mets and their overinflated record are merely the results of the weakest NL in history.
-The 2006 Mets would lose a 7-game series to Toronto, Detroit, Minnesota, Cleveland, Oakland, or Texas and would easily get swept by the Red Sox, Yankees, or White Sox.
-The 2006 Mets will be the first of 5-7 Mets teams where a Met fan can make the case that the Kazmir trade cost them the championship. (Hey, at least you have some good years to look forward to.)
-The 2006 Mets have the worst stadium in MLB (again.)
I\'ve heard there are situations where the pitcher can be forced to bat even in the AL, but I don\'t understand how this works. Was this one of those scenarios?

Peck-Ant-Jocelyn, 2 weeks away! Also, Papi is a madman.
Red Sox acquire Lopez from Baltimore
The Red Sox had been in the market for a starting backstop since Jason Varitek went down with a knee injury, and on Friday they addressed that concern by picking up three-time All-Star catcher Javy Lopez from the Baltimore Orioles.
Lopez batted .265 with 8 home runs and 31 RBI in 76 games for the Orioles this season. He appeared in 53 games as designated hitter and caught 21 games.
mostly ball sweat and a touch of swamp ass.
so, this thread\'s been quiet lately..
I threw in the towel
The Red Sox just aren\'t very good this year. Too bad.
Derek Jeter is going to be the MVP this year, and for that the rest of the Red Sox owe both David Ortiz and Manny Ramirez (my pick for MVP) an apology.
Hopefully the Twins can put me out of my optimistic misery by the weekend.
:point:

I\'m just surprised that the frikin baseball thread was crickets from August 23rd to September 19th, right when things get really interesting. I guess I carry the thread...I mean, I made my throwing-in-the-towel post in mid August and all was quiet after that. Pitchie thanks for being the only Met fan to show up. Where are the other Met fans? Yankee fans, how pumped up are you after purchasing your 10th straight AL East Title? (The evidence is abundant...Yankee fans just don\'t enjoy rooting for the Yankees that much. It makes sense; How can it possibly be that exciting?) Cmon people it\'s late September!
Also if your team is out, who do you temporarily adopt as your team to pull for? For me it\'s my go-to 2nd choice team...
And on that note....
LET\'S GO METS! 20 years is too long to wait! And we didn\'t even deserve to win in \'86 so we stilll need a solid no-doubt-about-it championship to justify the existence of the franchise! GOOOOOOOOOO METS!

See what I mean people? The Yankees are about to win a division title and all you can get from Yankee Fan is an eyeroll. Nothing to say about the team, not excited for the playoffs, not really having much fun in general.

JONATHAN PAPELBON
Red Sox GM Theo Epstein confirmed Sunday that Jonathan Papelbon would enter spring training as a starting pitcher.
Epstein said that it\'s the opinion of the medical staff that the switch would be the best thing for Papelbon\'s long-term health. A rotation including Curt Schilling, Josh Beckett, Papelbon and Tim Wakefield looks good on paper, but the Red Sox will have to add quality relievers and there are few out there in free agency. The club could look to take a chance on Eric Gagne or Kerry Wood, but it could use a couple of sure things, too.
I\'d like to say see you in the World Series but I have a feeling the Padres will not be there.
Yankees rule!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
BLOW Padres!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Can it be over now so Fox can bring back House........
this is not good.
Don\'t bury the Yanks yet! Bonderman will get shelled tonight. No doubt in my mind this is coming back to the Bronx.

Who the fuck welcomed you into this conversation, Spaceman?
The Yankees face the easiest postseason they have ever gone through. No way they lose more than 4 games. This should be a breeze.

Suggestions for the 2006 offseason:
Joe Torre- It\'s time to go. I welcome the Pinella rumors. Torre\'s a laisse-faire manager. That\'s perfect for some veteran teams, but it might be time for an ass kicker again. Retire #6, and put up his monument, but we need to shake things up.
A-Rod- Shop him. There are plenty of good young Yankees, that if you can get 2-3 quality young ball players in return (like maybe a catcher? Jorge isn\'t getting any younger) you can stay competitive and semi-rebuild at the same time.
Randy Johnson- Please, PLEASE retire. I have a bad feeling he\'ll continue to disgrace himself for another year, but I can only hope.
Gary Sheffield- Thanks for everything, but Melky needs to play.
And on positive note:
Robinson Cano, Chien Ming Wang, Melky Cabrera and Scott Proctor all really came through this year. Jeter was great as usual, and Damon was the best free agent signing they\'ve made since Mussina.
Once again as a Red Sox fan, I\'m just glad the Yankees didn\'t make it....... :D Next year next year

rather lose in the 1st round then not make it to the 1st round, at least they had a chance to play in the post-season.
(scheduler at espn): Paul, can you stay late on saturday?
Paul: sure, what am I doing?
(scheduler at espn): editing
Paul: OK, but for what?
(scheduler at espn): Baseball tonight.
Paul: I\'ll need to get some notes on it, I\'ve never worked on that show before.
(scheduler at espn): It wont be hard, don\'t worry, I\'ll have them shoot you an email tomorrow about what you need to do.
Paul: Allright. What am I actually going to be cutting though? the seasons almost over.
(scheduler at espn): Nothing big, Game one of the world series.
Paul: Gee, Thanks... nothing like jumping in feet first there, hu?

Let\'s try this again: F the Cardinals...Who the hell likes them?
Carlos at the Bat
By Steve Hofstetter
10/23/06
The outlook was delightful for the Flushing Nine that day
They\'d tied it up three games a piece with one still left to play
The Cardinals, Mets, the LCS, a chance at pennant glory
But I\'ll rewind a bit for now and tell the background story
Mets fans were happy, coming in, and boy they had good reason
Their team rolled through the Grapefruit League, then rolled right through the season.
But with Pedro out and Duque gone, they realized their worst fears
They backed into October as banged up as Britney Spears
But the Mets looked tough, these playoffs, after sweeping up the Dodgers
Despite a pitching staff as lame as \'90s Kenny Rogers
They took Game 1 right from the Cards, the Cards then took two more
Before the Mets could plate a dozen runners in Game Four
With Glavine on just three days rest, Game 5 would be a battle
But rains came down, and down, and down (the field looked like Seattle)
Game 1 saw Glavine pitch a gem, Tom looked like vintage Seaver
But Game 5 would be different as he couldn\'t outpitch Weaver
Perhaps with too much rest, the bats dozed off and lost Game 5.
Though the next day they woke up and took Game 6 to stay alive.
The Mets now had a chance to win, a chance at baseball heaven
To face the Tigers in Detroit (if they could win Game 7
The Cards threw Suppan, easy choice, but on the other hand
The Mets rotation held with packing tape and rubber bands
Perez went for the Metsies, he\'d won three and lost 13
His 6-5-5 earned runs per game, the highest baseball\'s seen
Perhaps he had adrenaline, or did it just because
Perhaps he had amnesia and forgot just who he was
With hopes and dreams of fans and all his teammates on the line
Whatever spurred on Oliver; Perez? He pitched just fine.
When Ollie left the mound and gave his manager the ball
The seventh game was knotted up, the score was still 1-all
Two Cardinal runs erased when Chavez flew like he was Wendy
His leaping catch insured that inning six came to an Endy
And tied it stood in inning nine, a Heilman strike-palooza
Their bats, his balls got on as well as Rolen and La Russa
But then a sudden silence fell across the Shea arena
The tie was gone; a two run blast by Yadier Molina.
Was this the end? Could this be it? Were World Champ dreams now crushed?
The Amazins mazed? The Mets been Met? The boys from Flushing, flushed?
With three outs left, could they still find a weakness to explot?
The one rare time the promised land could be known as "Detroit"?
Jose led off the ninth -- a hit! And Endy echoed hit!
But Cliff limped off the field with called strike three now in the mitt
And Reyes didn\'t fare so well, now two out and two on
With all the hopes of coming back to win now all but gone
But wait, Lo Duca walked! Potential winning run! Crowd roaring!
(I\'m not the first to notice that man\'s excellent at scoring)
The bases juiced, but two men out -- It\'s not exactly easy
But if anyone could bring them home, his name\'s Carlos Beltreezie
You could hear it in the stands and you could hear it in the booth
In October vs the Cardinals, Beltran may as well be Ruth.
Like picking up an ace of spades with four kings in your hand
Unless a royal flush comes up, we go to Disneyland
The Hall of Science, Tennis Center, Unisphere are dark
No Botanics in the Garden, and no Terrace on the Park
In St. Louis, men are laughing. In Detroit, the children shout,
But there is no joy in Flushing -- mighty Carlos soon struck out.
Yet this isn\'t where the story ends, not even close or near
Like the Dodgers did before them, now the Mets wait til next year
If the Cards were hurt, and not the Mets, we\'d be 1969ing.
They\'d be back home in Missouri, hearing more of Albert\'s whining.
I will say it here in print and I will say it next aloud
The Mets battled, scraped, and fought, and played, and lost -- and made me proud.
With a healthy staff and confidence, they\'ll wrestle for a ring

Red Sox signed RHP Daisuke Matsuzaka to a six-year, $52 million contract.
The Matsuzaka addition would seem to give the Red Sox a rotation with as much upside as any in baseball. Still, time will tell whether Josh Beckett will bounce back and whether Jonathan Papelbon will hold up as a starter. Our guess is that Matsuzaka will post the best ERA on the staff, finishing in the 3.50-3.80 range. He should be a top-20 fantasy starter.

yes, congratulations to the 2007 world series champion boston red sox. you fans certainly deserve it. break out the saki!
