Title: Webster Expectations
Post by: Drew_Kingsley on February 24, 2004, 04:08:44 pm
It\'s coming up on that time when we can spread opinions, rumor, ranting, and lies about what we want to hear at Friday\'s show.  Let \'em rip... err... your opinions, that is.

I would predict that Matt and Chris are going to be putting at least one * first time played on their setlists.  At the past two Webster shows (05/31/03 and 10/31/03) we saw the debuts of 3 originals (Gravity, Sleeping Beauty, and Vera St.) and a cover (Being For The Benefit Of Mr. Kite!).  And since the turn o\' the calendar to 2004, there have been 2 originals (Za, Doughboy) and 6 covers (Message In A Bottle, Shakedown Street, Cinnamon Girl, Tom Sawyer, Jumpin\' Jack Flash, I Shot The Sheriff) debuted, not including Folsom Prison Blues, which made its debut after midnight during the New Year\'s Eve show.  El Breakfast has clearly been on a new song tear, and the Webster shant be an exception.

And, though there is still one (Psychedelic) Breakfast show before the Webster, there is a certain song that starts with an "M" and ends with an "ooboo\'s Voodoo (Episode 2)" that we haven\'t heard since the Iron Horse.

Go on, discuss...

Does this mean that Pec has been officially canned as setlist guru?  Is it because of the New Year\'s setlist debacle?

Didn\'t you get the memo?

Actually, I was just referring to the two most frequent tapers of the past six months or so (I think).  Dave\'s title as setlist guru remains unchallenged, unless of course he omits the "The" before "Vermont Song" again.  Or... God forbid... forgets to note a bass solo in "Spunk".  Any errors in "Food For Thought" quotes are subject to review.

Be careful doing that though, any girl with her wits about her will probably pretend it really is her birthday and try and convince you to buy her a drink. You could end up buying a heck of a lot of drinks....

Which reminds me... I doubt I will be in driving condition by the end of the show. Anyonr know if there are any hotels in the vicinity that are relatively inexpensive, but not so trashy that I will fear for my life if I need to leave the room to get ice?

ok thanks, I hopefully will be able to handle a 10 minute drive, or, at least one of my friends who heads down with me should be able to. I was just looking at the Webster website, and there are THREE bands opeing for pb!? who are those jokers? (Nero excluded)

probably because that\'s pretty much par for the course at the webster to have 87 crappy opening bands before the headliner..
Title: Webster Expectations
Post by: aJwvof on March 06, 2004, 11:23:37 am
pretty poor taste if you ask me. you got to realize that bands don\'t just start out as headliners ... other bands / venues need to give them a shot that is how it works ... people had to want to have PB open up for them ... it helps music and the scene ... not saying they aren\'t bad bands out there but to just make blanket statements is not necessary ...
Title: Webster Expectations
Post by: jocelyn on March 06, 2004, 11:38:53 am
Aw I think you\'re being a little over sensitive. You have to understand how frustrating it is to go for a night of "ser" music and have to put up with a bunch of crummy bands first.... that\'s not what I\'m paying for. It is typical of the Webster too so I think that was an appropriate statement. Of course bands don\'t start out as headliners, but I don\'t think that\'s a valid reason for a crummy band to open for a really good one. If they\'re no good, I don\'t really think venues should have to give them a shot. I don\'t want to hear it. Or they could at least have them open for bands that are a little more at their level.... and, if there is going to be a nobody opening band, there really doesn\'t need to be more than one...

Title: Webster Expectations
Post by: aJwvof on March 06, 2004, 11:43:44 am
who were the opening bands?

I respect not liking them as long as you have a valid reason. They suck and I hate them (not saying anyone said that) aren\'t real reasons.
Title: Webster Expectations
Post by: Wolfman on March 06, 2004, 11:50:36 am
A lot of bands that open for PB at the Webster and the Dying Room should be playing at the local VFW for their 10 friends who come.  These bands that (a) suck and (b) have no fans do not belong on a bill at 300+ person venues with $16 cover charges.  Nero is a good band to open for PB.  That makes for an all-around professional show.  The circus of high school jokers that have paraded through the Webster and Dying Room make PB shows look like totally amateur operations.  Do you think Particle, Umphrey\'s, or Raq have openers like this, especially just 50 miles from their home cities?  No way.
Title: Webster Expectations
Post by: jocelyn on March 06, 2004, 11:51:56 am
Yeah of course not. I suppose it wasn\'t fair to just ASSUME they were going to be bad before the Webster show even happened. (I got there too late to see them so I have no idea how they were...) I guess it\'s hard not to make that assumption because of past experience.
Title: Webster Expectations
Post by: davepeck on March 06, 2004, 11:58:12 am
joce hit the nail right on the head. imo, at a venue like the webster, there really isn\'t any need for more than one opener, and that opener should be well matched with the headliner.. it just seems like the webster throws random bands in ther to open, with no real logic to it..
Title: Webster Expectations
Post by: realisthis on March 06, 2004, 12:31:43 pm
Other bands such as the biscuits and moe used to not even have openers and look how big they are now...It\'s a real turnoff when I wanna go see breakfast and I know if I dont arrive late Im going to have to sit through 3 or 4 bands....
Title: Webster Expectations
Post by: antbach on March 06, 2004, 01:08:17 pm
wow, I sparked alot of controversy from a post five days or so ago, heh. My basis for that statement is that every time I have been to the Webster it is always packed with opening bands that have no intention on trying to get more publicity or interest or whatever you want to call it, it is more or less so they can play at a show with a good band (tb) and their hometown friends can come out and watch because "hey man, i\'m in a band". One PB show there last year I remember had some college aged guys from Chesire, not even sure what their name was, but my girlfriend at the time was friends with the bassist and she said that those guys rarely play shows, maybe once every month or two and never leave the state. And good thing Wolfman brought up the Living Room too. That place is terrible with booking openers. A friend of mine\'s band got the first opening slot for PB last time they were there and no one got to see them. The guy who works there\'s band took th opening slot, and for those of us who did see these guys, they were TERRIBLE, even the band said they were pretty bad. Funny thing is, when I heard that our guys were coming back March 13 I told jarrod to try to get the opening gig, so he tryed, only to find out that it was taken by the guy who works there\'s band. Be prepared to show up late next Saturday or play alot of pool and zone out the music. . .

Post by: antbach on March 06, 2004, 01:25:54 pm
wasn\'t there two others before nero?  I wasn\'t there, but I think enough people have heard about nero from there travels with moe. and there travels through CT (Toad\'s Place 11/9/03, Paradise Rock Club after that) that they would have had a decent draw at the Webster.
