Post by: FieryBill on February 26, 2006, 01:15:43 pm
Hey,

I dont post much, but just wanted to say thanks to the boys for bringing back Love Lake. I\'ve listened to the Knitting Factory version a couple thousand times now! FieryBill says right on!

It totally reminds me of a how Here Comes Sunshine came back w/ GD.
Vince recounted that he had asked Jerry why they did not play it anymore and Jerry told him he had forgotten about it.
So Vince brought it back w/ his band The Affordables opening for JGB Halloween. Two months later GD bust it out in Tempe.
Title: Love Lake great tune HORRIBLE ENDING
Post by: leith on March 30, 2006, 01:01:02 pm
Now having seen Love Lake in person a few times I gotta say the song is great but the Blues ending is HORRIBLE. It is so cheesy i gag on it.

Really it sucks. It totally takes away from the powerful feeling of love and happiness and is utterly jarring in it\'s cheesiness.

They could end the song easily just they way they do right before the tacked on cheese puff blues.

I guess Tim is aware some people think it cheesy(Believe me I am not the only one) but keeps it anyway.

I hate to see a good song ruined for no real good reason. Until they change it I will just continue to sing made up lyrics about how cheesy the ending is while they play it. Works for me so far.

I am not a fan of the Blue Ending either, when I first heard it back on 2/4, I remember saying that it has no place in the song.

Yeah I know the ending they had was a big reason they shevled it. I just think this ending was a mistake. They have better vocals now and can end the song in a waaaay more powerful way than that blues blah.
Well Chris did ya really xpect anything less?

maybe the song shouldn\'t have an ending, just like drift off in space and into another song.

Post by: jking on March 30, 2006, 01:45:39 pm
to be honest, i\'m not a big fan of *any* "blues" stuff the guys do. as much as i love them, they just don\'t have the blues. every time they play a blues jam (like the one in that rufus last year) or have a blues section, it always sounds very cliched. its one reason i\'ve been slow to warm to eppy3 and one reason i don\'t think love lake can be \'epic\'. i didn\'t know that the ending was why it got shelved, but once i heard the new ending, i had to wonder what the hell the previous ending was to make them decide that the new ending was better!?!

The blues section of Episode 3 is the only bluesy thing thus far that I have heard and not minded. Considering it\'s still a relatively new song, and it still sounds pretty good, I think it will work.

I have never been a huge fan of Love Lake.

i liked the old ending (complete with ronnie singing) much better.

Wow glad to know I am not the only one on this.

Well maybe a larger consensus and not "Oh great here goes Leith bitching again" will maybe convince Tim to change it.

Doubtful but you nvr know.

I\'ve been giving it a lot of thought since Leith first mentioned his opinion to me in Crystal Bay and I have to say it\'s growing on me. Granted, I\'ve only ever vaguely heard the old ending. Regardless of the ending, this has become one of my favorite songs after hearing it live.

i could do without their bluesy stuff.  ep3 barely makes the cut, just because i like the version of the 12 bar blues they do there chord progression-wise.  for me ep3 is really all the first half of the tune.

I don\'t think that Love Lake should "end" when played in concert.  I don\'t have access to the song right now, so I can\'t point out when/where it should segue/jam into space, but I feel like it should.

Post by: jking on March 30, 2006, 05:02:41 pm
i think good things is their best blues song, even though its not typical blues. it has the power and emotion one expects from a blues tune, but comes from a completely different (ie more poppy) progression.

Love lake at the stone church was AWESOME. The whole song was killer and everyone boogied down to it. So I guess I dig the ending.

I\'ve said this before and I\'ll say it again

Good Things is a GREAT thing. IMO it\'s the most mature song Tim has ever written.  Not musiclly crazy, but the pure unadultered emotion it brings out, it litereally (seriously literaly not like I literally shit my pants(so what\'d you do with the pants?) (sorry sidetracked) gives me goosebumps
Title: Love Lake
Post by: sallyalli on March 30, 2006, 05:48:53 pm
Good Things is too slow for me. The lyrics are really powerful and its a good song and all...I just think they should be cautious and not play it at the wrong time. I sometimes find myself let down at shows when they go into it.

precisely!!! i was really iffy about the song before, but HOT DAMN, there was not a single stagnant person at the stone church during that jam... gave me goosebumps!

i don\'t know how they\'ve been ending it lately, but the little vocal overlapping they did at the end of love lake on the Bakers Quad Amherst cd from 2001 fit the tune quite nicely i my opinion

Post by: Overexjoesure on March 31, 2006, 12:16:38 pm
I agree with Drew, Love Lake shouldn\'t have an ending. It\'s such a great improvisation launchpad and I think it would be really unique to have a song that you know will lead into unchartered waters and apocalyptic landscapes...
Title: Love Lake
Post by: Gfunk on March 31, 2006, 12:29:39 pm
i think the old ending was waaay better. i liked the way they ended it in a round with the lyrics being repeated and what not. i agree with spacy and drew that they should just not end it and instead jam it into a different song, at least sometimes.

as far as other blues in breakfast songs, i love eppi 3 including the blues. damn that mojo mama! the rufus blues aint too bad imo either.

Good Things is a ser tune. it\'s important to have some slow bfast tunes as well and this one is definately one of their best (tied w/ question mark)

Okay, tB owns the blues!!!  When they play blues they play it like no one else I have ever heard.  The latest Iron Horse was the perfect example of this.  Awakening was a blues masterpiece at that show, the slow parts during the first movement though are my favorite.  Tim\'s solo was incredible and Jordan is so great at bluesy organ playing and he showcased it well that night.

Then The Vermont Song from that show holy effin\' shit!!!!  The guitar solo was amazing deep down dirty blues.  There is no better medium for emotional expression than the blues.  I mean it\'s named after a feeling, what other genre\'s of music have that going for them?

Oh and as for the blues ending in Love Lake, the old ending was better I think.  tB can play the blues as great as they want, it still won\'t make that ending fit with the song just like Yanni can\'t cover Metallica.

None taken...  I\'m sure I do, but ignorance is bliss as they say.  I just think that the blues are very guitar driven.  Tim = Best guitarist ever  well I guess you can draw the parallel.  But seriously, if you weren\'t at the latest Iron Horse give it a listen, those bluesy songs we crazy.  Okay so tB isn\'t Government Mule, but they\'re still damn good at the blues...
Title: Love Lake
Post by: jking on March 31, 2006, 03:37:54 pm
i wasn\'t there, but i have heard it. tim has the notes down, but its the feel to those notes that he still needs some work on. don\'t get me wrong, unless you\'re born and raised on the blues, it takes a while to get them down. 20 guitar-years later and i\'m still working on them. and frankly, given the level of maturity the band has been bursting with lately, its probably only a matter of time before i retract these statements, but i saw someone say that the most recent rufus blues jam was very srv-like and smokin\' and it simply wasn\'t. it was cliched runs and licks played well and fast, but didn\'t really have the soul behind them, that stinging fury and bliss all rolled up into one, that really marks great blues playing.

now, that being said, you mentioned something about how jordan has a great blues organ sound, and i totally agree.
Title: Love Lake
Post by: Dyed_Tie on March 31, 2006, 03:52:49 pm
Very true, that\'s a great post jking.  That\'s a very good description of the blues.  I didn\'t hear the bluesy Rufus though so I can\'t concur with or dispute your view.  I\'m not goign to go against what you said about runs and what Tim played but your really can\'t get a more cliche\'d type of music than blues, they\'ve been done and done again.  You\'re right it\'s the feeling that makes the blues the blues, not the notes (well except that flat 5th).

The old ending with the round = cheesy! I dig the blues ending. There\'s something unsettling about the transition that makes it work for me because it amazes me every time how the emotion can carry over so well between two completely different styles. It\'s like a nice long breath before the ending lands.

They should just stretch out the "Swim at the love lake!" part for an additional 10-15 minutes and skip the blues ending, imo.

I don\'t really mind the blues ending (though Eppy3 blues is the best blues PB ever pulled off imo) but I think the "Swim at the love lake!" part should be extended because it kicks so much ass.

@ LOVE LAKE

Way out of your normal way
Gonna brighten up your day
Plenty of time in a three hour stay
Not enough I say

Aqua rocks swings and trees
Formula of escape
All of the silence and wildlife
It\'s a place to meditate
Ain\'t it great...

Protected by a wall of green
Remoteness that you have never seen
Isolate that year was great to vent
Your soul clean, venting your soul clean
venting your soul clean, at this Love Lake

I invite you all to come and see
People naked spirits free
Making yourself and myself feel so great
Bring your love into this lake

Embrace it like a magic wand
To hear you step into the pond
So many of these are lying around
Many waiting to be found
In the ground...

Searching patiently and why
Like a bird flying through blue skies
Finally I had to find a
Love Lake making life divine, a Love Lake making life divine
Love Lake making life divine, at this Love Lake
Love Lake...

Splash...... Splash........

Swim at the Love Lake (x8)

At this Love Lake... Love Lake... Love Lake...

Anticipation wild you hiked that same old mile
Now that you\'re there no more worries and
No more cares, I swear
Go swimming back and forth
Because the water\'s warm
As the sun goes down now
Watch darkness swarm, blackness forms
Till the morn...

Rest afloat for it is known
She\'ll make you feel like you\'re at home
Serene scene your spirit clean
A Lake of Love is not a dream
Lake of Love is not a dream...

At this Love Lake...

I may not have heard it "in person" in 8 years, but that doesn\'t mean that I haven\'t heard it on a recording any of the 60+ times it has been played during that time period.

I can be sick of it because it was played 29 times in 2001 and 21 times in 2000, which was during the time when I went to a lot of shows.

It\'s a matter of personal choice...
