At 6am on sunday, I\'ll be doing this (http://www.nyctri.com/). I\'m only planning to finish, irregardless of my time. The running is going to be the hardest part for me.
Swim 60 laps in olympic size pool > Bike 25 miles > Run 6 miles
(http://img133.imageshack.us/img133/5302/nyctri3ee.jpg)
1500 Meter Swim (60 laps in olympic size pool)
The race starts on Manhattan\'s Westside at 98th Street and the Hudson River. The point to point swim course is near the seawall to minimize the effect of the current. Kayakers and other members of the water safety team frame a 20 yard swim lane from start to finish. Athletes swim south and exit near the 79th Street Boat Basin before running into transition. The Hudson River, one of America\'s most famous waterways, is home to many open water swims and is considered one of the cleanest rivers in New York.
40 Kilometer Bike (25 miles)
The cycling course exits Riverside Park at 79th Street. Athletes enter the northbound entrance of the Henry Hudson Highway, staying in the right lane. Athletes will continue on a moderately hilly course north out of Manhattan, over the Hudson River Bridge, and exit onto the Mosholu Parkway. The course proceeds south on the Mosholu and U-turns at Gunhill Road in the Bronx. Participants will proceed back to the Henry Hudson Parkway and ride south in the Northbound Lane to 57th street where another u-turn will be completed and cyclists will head north and exit the Henry Hudson Parkway at 79th street and proceed back to the transition area. All bicycle traffic will utilize the normally northbound roadway which will be totally closed to vehicular traffic.
10 Kilometer Run (6 miles)
Runners will exit Riverside Park at 72nd Street and run across 72nd Street to Central Park. Runners turn left when entering Central Park and will run in a clockwise direction around the northern loop of Central Park. The Finish line is on Dead Road, just west of the bandshell on the 72nd Street Transverse in Central Park.

I was talking about triathlons this weekend, I heard they have shorter ones (half length?) for beginners. Know where I could find one? How\'d you get started?

They started a team at work last fall, I joined as an excuse to get myself in the gym. I used to swim and I bike all the time, so the running is the only hard part. There are tons of places with info. No time now to dig through them, but heres the links page from the teams web site:

Also, this is not an ironman if your curious. As wild said, there are halfs, olympic (this) and ironmans. Halfs are half of this amount so 30 laps of the pool, 12.5 miles bike and 3 mile run. Ironman is a 2 miles swim, 100 mile bike and a marathon (26 mile) run to finish it out. Anyone that can do that deserves respect!

/\\/\\/\\ Thanks Zappa.

Good luck, Frank. Is this the event DavePeck participated in a couple years ago?
I should join you next year, my running and biking endurance is very high and now I\'m working on my swimming.

my favorite part. Very fitting. :P

Have you heard of the father/son team (team Hoyt) from Massachusetts that competes in the iron man and Boston Marathons? Dad pushes/pulls(in water) the wheelchair-bound son the whole way, and the dad is 65.
Read about them and you will be inspired for your event
-
Wow - good luck with this... you\'re a true inspiration for my lazy ass! ;)
-
Respect, indeed.
Did the London Marathon, but it took me 5 hours!! A mate in work recently completed his first triathlon, but he only had a 15 mile bike ride, and he said that was bad enough.
Good luck, me ole son!!

don\'t ask.

It was listed as passing for "bathable water"... NYC defines this as such:
All of the following conditions are considered in order for a beach to be classified as open and approved for bathing:
1. Bathing beach water quality are in accordance with the following water quality standard for marine water beaches: Enterococci geometric mean shall not exceed 35 Colony Forming Units (CFU) per 100 ml for a series of five or more samples collected during a 30-day period.
2. Sanitary and safety surveys conducted are satisfactory to the Department; and
3. The epidemiological history is satisfactory to the Department. No repeated complaints/reports of illness/injury received from the public or from owners/operators of bathing beaches.

It don\'t mean much.

According to the scale, I lost 7.5 lbs since saturday. That\'s with a huge rice/pasta/chicken dinner and TONS of fluids today. I think the heat may have played a part in it.

FUCKIN\'BRAVO!!!

:yay:
I don\'t think anyone has mentioned it was over 90 degrees in NYC yesterday. I know the triathlon was early in the am, but still, damn hot!
-
Hey Paul, congratulations on training for--and finishing--something so grueling. Well done!
-

7:31-10:45am was my race, the sun was already full above the buildings when I got in the water. Actually, the heat didn\'t really hit me until after I finished the race. The water felt cold when you jumped in (I think they said 70 degrees F). It was really hot in the park though. There were parts where you were going uphill with no shade. That was probably the most painfull part of the race.
-
I was thinking about you yesterday on my 45-mile bike ride through the Eastbay hills in 95 degree heat.
-
Yay Paul --- Great work!!!

well, as I grow older, I am apparently getting stupider. Just signed up for the Weschester Toughman 1/2 Ironman (http://www.westchestertoughman.com/). This is more than double the length of the first one I did that was the start of this thread.
1.2 mile swim (39 laps of a pool/77 lengths)
56 mile bike ride (~2.5 hours)
13.1 run (aka a half marathon, 52 times around the track)
I just ran yesterday for the first time in over a year. 3.5 miles very pathetically with horrible form. I really suck at running. I have 2 and a half months to get in shape now before this happens on sunday 9/21. Man, I really need to start training now. OOF.
:strong: [BANANA]I\'m stupid[/BANANA]
-
Now hold on just a minute...weren\'t you the guy who just one week ago posted "better your knees than mine" in regards to my upcoming half marathon?? And now you\'re doing a half marathon PLUS all the swimming and biking? Hehehe you rock! Good luck!
-
yea, al making fun of me in that thread was one of the deciding factors in attempting this. I can run, I just suck at it, it hurts and I don\'t like to.
Still, I\'d love to do an ironman on my "before you die" list
-
Well, I\'m glad Al and I could inadvertently team up to motivate you to take on the half-ironman. Is a half-ironman an Ironboy?
-
Hey Paul, why don\'t you just come over our house...I\'ll give you a firm foot or three to the nuts and a couple, or five, good jabs to the quads. Day= called!! ;)
-
Not trying to be a downer, just concerned...
If your knees are really that bad, is it ok for you to do this? If it hurts you that much to run, maybe your body is telling you something. If it\'s a muscle pain that\'s one thing.... But if it is something that training and fitness doesn\'t help, be careful. Blowing out a knee is something that would likely bother you for the rest of your life, and being a person that enjoys athletic endeavors, it would really be a shame to cause any permanent damage to your body...
-
c\'est la vive.
I guess I\'ll find out. The actual running of a long distance in 1 day never bothered me that much as I made it sound. The problem has always been when I\'m in training, doing nothing but running day after day for months at a time. This time I\'m going to space it out over the week with just running days, just swimming, ect. If it happens again though, then you\'re absolutely onto something joc.
-
why would you ever wanna do such a thing?
-
to keep you guessing freddie.
