I want to get my father one of those GPS car mappy things for Christmas. I know a few of you on here have one. Any suggestions regarding brand/where to buy?

Thanks!

Ha. My father and I both have the new Rand McNally trucker version of their US/Canada Atlas. It\'s awesome- laminated pages, and information on things like low bridges that a car or horse trailer might not fit under, plus every major rest area in the country. I get a new one every couple of years. I really love it. Super nerdy.

you want a garmin or a tom tom. There is another big name but i can\'t think of what it is. Fitzy has the software for it which runs on his portable pc, they also do that for palm pilots but you probably want the stand alone unit. One of the guys I work with got a black friday deal on a tom tom for $100, so you\'re probably looking to spend $150-$200 depending on what you get.

The only other thing I can recommend is you want one that will not have a supscription fee with it although I don\'t know if any of them do that. You want one where you can just download the most recent maps from the company websites into the box and you\'re good to go. As far as which brand is the best I can\'t say but it seems people have more garmins than anything else. Hope that helps.

ugh - don\'t buy a garmin... if you do, I fear that they\'ll put more of those annoying commercials on tv!  ;)

gps is amazing, never get lost again. some can even tell you if there is heavy traffic coming!garmin and tom tom are good. however i just downlaoded verizons gps to my phone, and that works really well too if you are looking for a cheap way to have gps

<-apparently the only one who sees big brothers abilities to track our every movement getting easier and easier and we blindly go ahead with it. Give it another generation, Someone commits any crime against the state and the cannot only track you, but blow up your head via the cell phone/internet/tv chip implant contact lenses we will all be wearing.  We\'re heading for a distopia, and I blame tomtom.

You know Paul... I hadn\'t thought about the fact that my dad is really paranoid about "the man." He refuses, for example, to get EZ Pass because he is afraid of the governemnt tracking his movements. So this might actually be a really poor choice for him.

I kind of knew Tom Tom and Garmin were the two front runners. I was wondering really which is better, and suggested specific models etc. There are quite a few of them.

I\'m waiting for the day when the sattelites go out in a few years, and people all of a sudden are in gridlock because nobody knows how to get anywhere anymore without the computer telling them where to turn.

I think I\'d like your dad.
