not sure if anyone heard but U-Melt got arrested yesterday 10 minutes away from the festival.  they were supposed to play after the Conspirator, but when we drove away from the site we passed the band pulled over by 2 troopers and them all handcuffed and on their knees.  one of the dudes was harshly puking when we passed them too.  some seriously tough luck for those guys, hope everything worked out.  the breakfast set was outstanding, sounded better than ever tighter then ever.  luckily we got away with no hassle.

U-Melt performed last night at NuGroove. All the members of
the band and their crew are alright. I will not comment on the
other "information" as it\'s not my place and I don\'t know the
whole story.

Definate shenanigans.  If there were such a law, every cop in the country would have been @ Toad\'s for the Goth-fest this weekend.  One band was so bad I almost cried.

really?? i couldn\'t disagree more.... the set on saturday, while fun to an extent, really sounded stale and uninspired. the guys looked really tired throughout the set, and the energy level was just not there. Ron had the setlist posted right on his amp, facing the audience, which ruined the surprise for me... the setlist, while it looked good on paper, was a bit of a buzzkill... grand scheme doesn\'t exactly get the crowd bumpin\', if you know what I mean. i would have loved to hear a honey butter, or taboo, or even beef barley. intension had its highlights, but it seems like the jam sort of fizzled out towards the end. and i\'ve always been on the fence about score.... this was sort of the nail in the coffin for me....

there was a lot of hype about the band at this festival on friday night and saturday afternoon... lots of buzz, i heard the name mentioned consistently... my ween CD was overpowered at one point by another campsite blasting Rufus.... i was really excited, and i guess i was just expecting something else....

Princess, you make a couple of decient points regarding Ronnies setlist in plain view, and Scheme "not exactly getting the crowd bumping".  However, I believe your feelings about the set come from the "I\'ve seen so many sick ass breakfast shows, that this 5pm festie set just didn\'t do it for me" syndrome.

The guys were definitely tired, but I have never ever known that to effect their playing (and I still dont believe that had anything to do with it).  I mean there were probably 150 people feeling the music Saturday evening and when Tim announced midset that Gavin was going around with a mailing list he was immediately circled by about 30 kids waiting to get on it.

If anything killed the vibe at Nugroove, I would have to say it was the set time coupled with the fact that we heard that the latenight set had most festival attendees raging until 7am.  Now if I am at a festival and rage till 7am, I am not going to bed at 7:01 or even 8am.  The kids were obviously wiped out and it was hot as ballz taboot.  After hearing that I was suprised that there were as many people there as there was.

As for the setlist, Score opener was incomplete and supposed to be completed after Rufus.  I am pretty sure it wasn\'t.......Maybe that would have helped in your feelings about Score. maybe not.  Personally I am not a huge fan of Score myself especially in its current incarnation.  That is why I thought a Score setwich would help it out.  I mean all that song is really is a bass groove that just echos "Yadda yadda yadda yadda ya da da da"...

But I hear what you are saying about Scheme.  It doesnt necessarily get people bumping, but I sure as hell saw quite a few dropped jaws during that one.

I enjoyed the Nugroove set and experience for the time we were there.  However the acoustic guitar Phish singalong in the van on the ride home  blew away the Nugroove set for me.  Even though Adrian was laughing at my vocal stylings about every 5 or so minutes....

anywho that is my $0.02.....

at least one up-tempo song really would have done the set some good. honeybutter or gladys (or buquebus...why not?) would have been great early on in the set. i think there were a lot of people at the festival looking to get down. i mean, scheme is great and all, but it\'s a tough one to wrap your head around...especially the first time you hear it. some of the festival-goers would have had no problem understanding a little thumpthumpthumping dancey jam.

it was great to see the (at least) hundred people who came down to see the breakfast...there was nobody down there for the prior set, so that tells you they came down specifically for the breakfast.  and since it was such a small campground, you can be sure that everybody there (who was awake) heard the set.

first off....a couple of corrections......

Setlist: 07/29/06 - Nugroove Music Festival; Van Etten, NY

I: jam > Score(1) > Gravity > The Grand Scheme Of Things(2) > Intension, Tricky Ways, Rufus(3,4)

1 unfinished
2 with Drum Solo.
3 with alternate "Noonan" Lyrics from Adrian
4 with \'Two Tickets To Paradise\' (Eddie Money) tease.

Secondly, no uptempo songs? In a set that started with an unfinished score into gravity (with a ser jam mind you), and then a Schemer with new (yet not as good as Indy\'s) intro and ser build up.  And Intension (though maybe with a fizzled jam in some opinions) was quite a rocker (per usual) in my opinion. Then the always well received blues mover Tricky Ways and a Rufus to close the set.  I would say that the set was quite uptempo.

However, there were two distinct points where I could tell people were not totally connected with the music.  One would be during the Adrians drum solo in Scheme.  And obviously it wasn\'t because it was a weak or uninspired solo, because those two words could never be used to describe The Animals playing, but more that I think that one hour festival sets are not the best times for a drum solo, no matter how much he tries to cut it down in time.  The other would be the Tricky Ways.  Now people were definitely digging it, but it was most definitely played in a much slower tempo than any other Tricky Ways I have ever heard or seen (acoustic or electric).  Actually all I could think about was, "man it would be cool to get a Breakfast slowed down heroin version of this tune".....

This would bring me to my next point. It would usually be at most Breakfast shows, the band would get slews of "input" as to what people wanted to hear, or what would people thought would work good as a segwich, or a set, or even an entire show.  More often than not it wouldnt be odd for folks to get their requests and suggestions obliged, and occasionally they became legendary moments in shows.  However, with this new incarnation of The Breakfast, and the band trying to work out their entire catalogue (which was pretty much written for 4 musicians and vocals) with only 3 musicians and vocals, the band really doesnt accept much input.  The setlists are a bit more crafted and usually only by the band.  Now I am sure that in due time The Breakfast will reclaim their reputation for honoring and enjoying getting ideas for song requests as well as for segwiches and even sets.....

I guess I\'m up to $0.04 for this thread.....

it does suck, i was really sad and disappointed the whole weekend. but you know, sometimes you play good sets and sometimes you don\'t, this happened to be a less than stellar performance by the band, and i\'ve accepted it. just gets me more excited for mill st and daniel st :)

the rest of the festival was pretty rockin to say the least. Conspirator definitely stole the show... however Raq and Particle (suprisingly!) and Brothers Past also were impressive. This was a great festival and i\'m most certainly anticipating next year!!!!

I really liked Barefoot too - they only sold about 650 tix that weekend, and the coziness was really warming and friendly.  While it was a total stonerfest, I do appreciate the smallness of a 1st annual gathering.  I\'ve heard from some that NuGroove held too many "spunyons" (sp?) in the crowd to be an inviting scene.  Anyways, I\'m sure the Breakfast was well received and they will hopefully return to BOTH festivals next year, when their album becomes well-known & loved by all.

i found the vibe to be incredibly welcoming, i actually met quite a few heads, and the attendees walking around were so friendly and helpful... but there was definitely shadiness, as any festival would have, but nugroove did possess an overwhelming lack of security....

i would say attendance ranged anywhere from 800-1000 people, but my estimation is not experienced/professional opinion! it was certainly the smallest festival i\'ve ever been to, if that means anything to anyone.

i certainly hope they\'d be invited back next year... maybe for a later time slot. it seems like the schedule was very carelessly assembled, with some great trance/techno sandwiching 2 sets of dark star orchestra.... ??

Hopefully these promoters are seeing reactions to our festival sets this year(WuLi, Sterling Stage, StrangeCreek, 10K Lakes, Barefoot, and Nugroove) and say, "wow! these kids can rock the balls off a crowd.  Lets let them headline. Maybe even give em 2 sets to play with."

sure you\'re not confusing them w/ New Monsoon?

To answer this question:  New Monsoon was busted for smoking **** in the green room of Stella Blue in Asheville, North Carolina.
