Post by: davepeck on December 14, 2007, 09:47:17 am
anyone see this movie yet? it\'s only playing in select cities right now, but i REALLY wanna see it. michael cera and jason bateman together again, rainn wilson, jennifer garner.. looks terrific, and has gotten nothing but rave reviews so far. nominated for 3 golden globes.

trailer:

imdb (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0467406/)

it\'s actually playing in cambridge, a mile and a half from the middle east. seriously considering getting up there early and catching it.

i know a guy who saw a pre-release screening and he hasn\'t stopped raving! directed by the same guy who did thank you for smoking (a HUGELY underrated movie, if you ask me) and apparently the script is just amazing! as soon as it shows up near here i\'m gonna make it the first movie i\'ve seen in the theatres since borat....

I heard an interview with the director on npr the other day and it sounds really really good. No idea what the plans are yet for boston but if timing works out I\'d  be down for seeing it if you\'re going.

In the interview the director really went off on one scene where Juno is talking to a couple (from memory)

Juno: "Why don\'t you just get one (a baby) from china? They have so many over there, it\'s like they\'re shooting them out of t-shirt cannons at basketball games trying to give them away"

Looks pretty good, and I thought Thank You For Smoking was great. Is it ever going to go beyond just showing in select cities? Do I need to drive to Boston to see it? If that\'s the case I\'ll probably just wait for the DVD.

Finally saw this movie and it was stupendous! I laughed so hard through most of the movie.
Ellen Page is fantastic and Michael Cera is just well Michael Cera and if you like him you know that\'s just perfect.

i\'d have to agree - i was certainly not wild about the previews, but  i caught it a few weeks ago ( it was a game-time decision by my friends and i opted to check it out instead of wuss out and go to bed) and i\'m glad i did!

the script was extremely clever, and it really kept me guessing right up until the end - had no idea what was going to happen. very much enjoyed it - check it out if you have the chance!

It\'s at the Criterion downtown NH and at the North Haven showcase.

It has some of the most hysterical dialogue!!  great performaances too.  More quotable quotes than caddy shack and garden state.  (okay, not caddy shack.  That\'s an exaggeration).

But it is more for the ladies than the guys.  If you happen to believe that all men are scum or dumb, you will adore this movie.  If not, you\'ll still laugh pretty hard, but leave feeling it didn\'t deliver the complete emotional package.

Just got back from seeing it. All in all a decent albiet hipster flick. Benny\'s right, it definetly has that subtle pretentious Napolean Dynamite brand of humor to it.

Well worth the ticket price to see Michael and George Michael, and also Schillinger in a non-Aryan/homosexual role.

Inspired by a cleverly written and quirky, yet accessible movie. I don\'t mean this in an "I\'m that good" way, but it feels like a flick that I could have written.

In an unrelated note, I\'m pretty sure if you didn\'t like Juno, it was "pretentious", and if you did like it, it was "cleverly written and quirky, yet accessible"... and neither one is wrong.

I saw this a few weeks ago and though it was one of the best moives I\'ve seen in a very long time. It\'s funny that you said that drew, because we had almost the same conversation as we were leaving:

The writing on it was like seeing an awesome guitarist, you are so blown away you want to race home and practice like crazy because you want to be able to do something that good. Then you see the next scene (hear next song) and that one is even better and you hate how much you suck and want to burn your guitar and never see one again because you could never hope to be even close to that talented.

you know, how most of us felt the first time we saw tim play.

Can\'t wait for it to come out on dvd. Might even go see it again in theaters.

I guess this was Diablo cody\'s first screen play.  She claims that she wrote it on her laptop in a Starbucks.

I just found it interesting that "fatherhood" seemed to be the only thing that brings legitimacy/depth to any of the main characters.  The only male figure of any depth was her dad - and even he was relatively imperfect (see first marriage).   the "scoundrel" of the movie is "not yet ready to be a father."

Even the boyfriend is basically a blank character (i.e. "pork sword") until he comes to grip with fatherhood.

Maybe I\'m reading too much into it.

No, your right on. It pretty much highlighted male inadequacy in modern day America to a T.  Unfortunately they lacked examination concerning Bateman and Vanessa\'s marriage.  I mean, the chick had to be cool at some point. She DID paint with an Alice and Chains shirt on.

Quote from: dictionary.com
Word History: Cute is a good example of how a shortened form of a word can take on a life of its own, developing a sense that dissociates it from the longer word from which it was derived. Cute was originally a shortened form of acute in the sense "keenly perceptive or discerning, shrewd." In this sense cute is first recorded in a dictionary published in 1731.

 ok, cute might be the wrong word, but it really had me from the beginning to the end, and I adored all the characters!!!

Slight Spoiler warning:  don\'t read this if you still want to see this movie:

Really enjoyed it.  Very cute movie.  Yeah, I said cute and I mean it in the original definition: keenly perceptive or discerning, shrewd.  It also had some hysterical dialogue.

I thought the soundtrack was great:  despite the fact that Juno seemed to be a punk fanatic, the soundtrack was so very unpunk (acoustic, female, almost child-like melodies with mature themed lyrics).  Seemed to go so well w/ the overall theme of the movie.

I love both the actors that played her parents (Allison Janney & JK Simmons).  They\'re both classic "midwest" character actors, that always seem to standout.  One of my favorite scene\'s was when she went for that Ultrasound and the Allison Janney character launches into the "technician" for making an inappropriate comment.

A friend from work mentioned that her teenage son had complained about Juno\'s dialogue, saying that teenage girls don\'t talk like that.  In a way I gotta agree, I mean none of my teenage cousins talk like that.  I kind of expected to see that the movie had been written by a man.  The movie seemed to lack that feminine feel... up until Jennifer Garner flipped the switch from humorless corporate robot, into "Mom" at the end of the movie.  Then I see that the writer was a former Lettermen writer named Diablo Cody, who looks surprisingly like Ellen Page (check out this picture of them together:  http://www.imdb.com/media/rm2804652544/nm1959505 (http://www.imdb.com/media/rm2804652544/nm1959505)).  With a name like that, I\'m thinking there are some autobiographical elements to the story.

I also thought that one of the interesting parts of the story was how things developed between the Jason Bateman character and Juno and how she seemed to be the driving force behind him realizing how his life had gone in a direction that he wasn\'t happy with.  While it seemed easy to demonize him (his timing couldn\'t have been worse), but when you step back, those two weren\'t right for each other.

The only day actually dedicated to YOU.
A day to celebrate your Birth.
