Title: Breakfast Merch (Or Lack Thereof)
Post by: Mark on May 13, 2005, 03:18:11 pm
It dawned on me last night while at Donna The Buffalo at Toads; why can\'t the Breakfast have a decent merch table with a wide variety of items?  While I had no particular desire to purchase a t-shirt, I almost would have just because some of the shirts looked really nice. They had a wide variety of shirts, hats, and other items and people were lined up at the end of the show to buy stuff.

With no disrespect for Chris on this one, why not have hats, key chains, lighters, etc?  I am sure it would help pay for some of the expenses for the band while on the road.  People are jonesing for copies of the first CD, why not reprint it and sell it (unless there is some licensing/contract issue).  I have an Umphrey\'s key chain/opener that I\'d be happy to replace with the Breakfast, if it was available.

Anyway just my thoughts; discuss, rant, etc......

merch is such a catch twenty-two. it costs a bundle to get made up, its cumbersome and takes up space in the van, and you always have to worry about someone swiping stuff (i knew a band from nc who had their whole merch stash stolen). however, since the prices to mass produce are lower than the prices we\'d pay for single items, and since it\'d be already paid for any money made is immediate gas/food money, and of course all the free advertising is invaluable so of course its a good idea. its just that the cash is required upfront and most bands at their stage probably don\'t have much of a war chest set up for those type of expenses.

so why not start off with selling live shows/dvds? burn the discs, have a labeling party (10 people can get 200 done in no time) and then sell them for 10 or 15 bucks at shows. maybe the band can pick some of their favorite versions of tunes, maybe pick the cream of the crop from the RR tour (because 05 is simply badassery all the way around) or some maybe just pick some great classic shows. then, take the proceeds from that to start a kitty for tshirts, stickers (which are a neccessity in the merch world) and the like?

the obvious problem is that folks can just go download most shows (which is a good thing), but not everyone can, and lots of folks are very immediate impulse buyers and won\'t want to wait after having been blown away. are there any more shows/dvds like the cafe9 that aren\'t widely available yet? cause i\'d probably start there, along with uac, toads, and maybe one or two others from this year.

Don\'t you guys get it?  This band isn\'t interested in making money (at least they don\'t show it).  They\'re musicians that like to play in front of big crowds and if they make a little money to get them to the next gig, that\'s nice.   The concept of "it takes money to make money" appears to elude them.  Even if you give them the "money" (in the form of products/services) they fail to appreciate or take advantage of it.

Here\'s an idea: I bet a nice live DVD would sell great on the merch table!  i even know some people that could probably get it done.

#1.merch is sorta like good advertisement.without them advertising, how would anyone know about them?
#2.selling live shows would only hurt the sales of real radio, and the others..
#3.if these guys wanna be around in another 5 years, they need to start steppin it up big time.

what if they had a partner fund it, almost like a seperate entity of The Breakfast. work out a deal where they get a % of each item sold and the financial backer gets the rest and keeps the merch up and going.

if I had the money I would volunteer myself because I know a guy who has a company that makes all types of that stuff, Barker Specialty in Cheshire. Probably could get real good deals.

just an idea...

1 & 2) well, since the live shows would be more discs, charge more for them than the studio albums. it\'ll help boost studio sales too, theoretically. and merch is definitely a necessity for advertising, but start off with something to make them some money so that they can afford the stuff that costs them money.

as for 3, i don\'t actually believe *they* need to be stepping it up. they\'re up they\'re raging every night. but they need someone not in the band who\'s sole focus is worrying about this kind of stuff so that they can focus on songwriting, playing etc. far too many good, small bands get broken up over this kinda stuff (disagreements, one guy seemingly making decisions for everyone, resentment that not enough end result is appearing, etc). i\'ve never been a fan of the musician/manager combo. the band shouldn\'t have to worry about this, they should have someone else worrying about it. its hard enough to be on the road playing to small crowds without the extra burden of worrying about the business end, too.

now, who that person should be for this particular band, unfortunately, i can\'t answer that one.

You\'re missing the point, the object is to sell to each customer, the live DVD and Real Radio.

Moe. is a great example. They had HUGE financial backing years ago. Can only assume that that fat kat is still helping them. I forget which one, but one of their fathers(?) has mad cash. Might have been some other kind of relative. It was years ago...memory a little foggy.

matt, the folks who come to breakfast shows, for the most part, have about enough money to get in the door,a drink or 2,and if were lucky soemthing off the merch.
how many hippies go to the table and walk away with 40+$worth of stuff?

In that case, why even bother with the merch table?  I think we\'re going in circles here.

Sell studio albums because they are more inclined to buy them over the possible free trades of live shows.

People want stuff with logo\'s on them, something that says The Breakfast. People are more inclined to buy keychains, lighters, stickers, signs, patches. If yo had a bunch of things that could sell between 1-5 bucks there would be an increase in sales. For a majority of people that go to shows, DVD\'s and Live Shows are usually less bought because people can get those for free. Put a few impulse items there and they will buy.

shirts are important.
and stickers.

there used to be shows available on the table.
nice ones,with covers and labels.
they were awesome.
camp creek,tla,etc.
bring this back.
most breakfast "fans"should already have the studio shit.

i agree with having the options of having non-studio recordings.

if you are looking to increase sales a little and make a little money, you need something that everyone will want to walk out of a show with.

I know that I have never left a show with enough money to buy a CD. I am lucky to have $5 left.

Quick sales = quick profit, which the band then could turn over and use towards improving their professionalism in such areas as, better sound equipment, lights perhaps, and other musical gear.

I think we can all agree on one thing here: the band needs to increase the number of items at the merch table at all different price points.

shit,  ill buy a few hundred lighters and give them to the boyz..whatever helps..this is a very good way to advetise, and Spacey was on the right track when he suggested a financial backer.  i know there are dirtyhippies that take change when they tip Tim at richters, but there are also old men like Mark and Todd who would love to buy there stuff at a show, i saw one first timer buy all the discs on the table and a shirt from chris at Worcester.. i also think that Jking had a good point, ie, the band needs to stay focused and write tunes and practice, not deal with merch this and sell that...but they need a trustworthy professional to deal with...Im sure the band thinks about this and "what if" situations and hopefully things will take a sharp turn positively after these festivals.the fans and voluunteers are here...

i have all of chris\' discs- the list looks like that- i\'ve been thinking of copying them and making funky covers and throwing them on the merch table and just selling them for full profit for the band but i don\'t want to be too pushy and as much as i see tim i don\'t want to push a "business" aspect when were partying together and i don\'t know why i haven\'t mentioned it to chris

1.  An Ode to Freddie Waht is definitely in order.  Ulee, you\'re on it.

2.  The band should sell life-size cutouts of themselves.  They should sell a group rate on all four.  People can set them up at home like the stage setup and look at them as they listen to recordings.

It\'s true there are soooo many things they could sell. And a lot of it could be acquired and sold for a huge profit. Such as the keychains/stickers. Hell, My brothers band doesn\'t even have gigs and they got online and printed a bunch of shotglasses with their name on it and just gave them out. The trick is to buy in Bulk. I\'ll poke around and see what I can find on pricing. My mom has a retail license so she can get stuff cheaper too.

Some new stickers would definitely be nice. As long as they aren\'t based on the ugly Real Radio logo.

Otherwise I\'ll be rockin\' that old "(PB)" sticker on my car until they come up with something better. Preferably something that says the word "Breakfast" and isn\'t ugly so people that see it have some clue what the sticker means.

Well it took me almost 10 minutes to get through all these post. I don\'t check .info for a day and I\'m way behind...LOL.
Here\'s just another suggestion.
I know that there are a bunch of things we would all like to see on the merch table, I would personally like some more shirts to choose from. But that is just me.
What if the band was to hold a raffle to raise money strictly for the merch table. I remember them raffling off stuff at a Cafe\' 9 show last year. I won the big autographed poster which I didn\'t buy a ticket for, they just handed them out at the door; however, I gladly would have bought some tickets to help the guys out and I\'m sure everyone here at .info would too.
Some things to auction off could be;
1. a autograph pictures of the band
2. free passes to "x" amount of shows ( this doesn\'t cost the band anything, how hard would it be for the band/manager to but your name on a list)
3. T-shirts
4. A guitar autographed by Timmy (I may be able to get one as a donation)

Anyhow, I think if we did this and the band knew it was for merch they would be all for expanding the merch table.
Also it would have to be at smaller venue, such as Cafe\' 9, Sully\'s or Porters.
Does any see an alternative motive here...LOL. (another local show for the hometown)

I def think there needs to be more merch at the merch table....last time i was there at webster i realized i owned every thing there....except the girl tee....but what i did see was the freakout dvd from couple years back playing on the moniter.  It was the first time i heard about it, so needless to say i was extremley excited, asked if i could buy a copy, and as told i could get it for free off the website....I think this proves that dvd\'s would sell...as my newbie ass would have thrown down up to 20 bucks for one.

they havent had stickers all tour, chances for em soon are slim, according to Chris. thats #1 on my list for Breakfast needs though, i feel like im falsely presenting myself with just a TDB, Phish, and Marley stickers. Marley stays, Breakfast replaces both of the others............if its ever fucking possible!! who do we need to get on about this? can i design a sticker and get em mass produced somewhere?

no shirts at all.
maybe a coupla girls shirts hangin around.
stickers!
hats,keychaind,lighters,posters,live shows..

We would sell all those things if any of them sold.  Whenever we print up posters we lose money, live shows can\'t do because of Duece  and Bona Fide (copyrights), I\'m pretty sure lighters have been tried before with little success.
But yes we do need stickers and shirts

Don\'t you guys get it?  This band isn\'t interested in making money (at least they don\'t show it).  They\'re musicians that like to play in front of big crowds and if they make a little money to get them to the next gig, that\'s nice.   The concept of "it takes money to make money" appears to elude them.  Even if you give them the "money" (in the form of products/services) they fail to appreciate or take advantage of it.

Here\'s an idea: I bet a nice live DVD would sell great on the merch table!  i even know some people that could probably get it done.

Shut the fuck up Vallo, that\'s not appreciated!

Chris,

Since you are around now, what has been the most profitable, if anything, that comes off the merch table? You are the only one who is always at the Merch Table, is there anything that you can think of, that might be a good item to put up for sale? outside of the T-Shirts and stickers.
Title: Breakfast Merch (Or Lack Thereof)
Post by: Me! on May 16, 2005, 11:25:15 am
It\'s hard to say, because of the lack of variety I have on the table CD\'s T\'s and the occasional poster are about all I ever have what sells other than that nothing because I never have anything other than that.  I think hats might work key chains maybe, but what I want ot do is to simply have a selection of like 3 t\'s and 4 or 5 varities of stickers and we\'d be in business, but that\'s easier said than done
Title: Breakfast Merch (Or Lack Thereof)
Post by: davepeck on May 16, 2005, 12:26:44 pm
i think the thing with the posters is, all the b\'fast posters so far have been show-specific posters. with those, you\'re really only targeting the audience of one show, and if you don\'t sell them all that night, you\'re not gonna find may people who want to buy a poster for a show they weren\'t at.

i think \'generic\' posters would sell better, and longer - either with an \'aruny\' design, or a killer \'old man todd\' photo/collage... my $.02.

lighters, key chains and other trinkets won\'t do squat, they just end up lost at parties with some random person wondering why the hell their newly aquired lighter says "The Breakfast" on it.  The way to go is song themed shirts, bumper sticker galore, FROLF discs would be ser also and this is a crazy shot in the dark, Nalgene bottles and Breakfast cereal.......

since it doesnt look like the band will be coming out with new merch any time soon would anyone be interested in more merch created by breakfast fans? The guys who are printing the ser tees can make a lot of other things. Maybe .info should have a merch section to make money for the site, which will help promote the band.

I did\'nt say they don\'t work "their balls off", they are the most dedicated musicians around. They just don\'t have a good business sense and that\'s frustrating to a lot of people.  perhaps you\'re implying that it\'s none of our business to comment or make suggestions.

Musicians are not good business men... just like most business men are not good musicians... different sides of the brain at work there... most people who are "artsy" don\'t have their brains wired for business... this is why successful artists (musicians, actors, etc) have agents or managers to take care of that.

since it doesnt look like the band will be coming out with new merch any time soon would anyone be interested in more merch created by breakfast fans? The guys who are printing the ser tees can make a lot of other things. Maybe .info should have a merch section to make money for the site, which will help promote the band.

waiting on Aruny\'s sticker design as we have this discussion. I am getting 1000 stickers.

Chris I know you don\'t think lighters would sell well, but I think the little, cheaper things like that would. 1-5 dollar items like stickers, lighters, shotglasses, coasters, whatever.... I know I don;t typically have an extra 20 bucks to spend at the end of a show, but I imagine they\'d clean up on those cheaper novelty items. Just make a sign telling people to stiff their bartenders and spend the extra money on merch. :)

I agree about the management/agent issue. Wait, is it possible this discussion has been had before?

I would happily spend a but of money on one of those small items, get a smallish bulk number as an experiment to see how they\'d do, and then go from there. Maybe we could get a few people on this site to do the same... then we\'d have a bit of variety on the table, and we could see what sells and wjhat doesn\'t.

I did\'nt say they don\'t work "their balls off", they are the most dedicated musicians around. They just don\'t have a good business sense and that\'s frustrating to a lot of people.  perhaps you\'re implying that it\'s none of our business to comment or make suggestions.

[MOUSE]Thread from the dead...[/MOUSE]

Hey all, here\'s some new Merch Table news:

New Breakfast T shirts are now available at shows - same design as the olive green/orange ones, but now in a dark charcoal gray with light gray writing - $15 (+shipping, if necessary!) I\'ll try to scan a pic of the shirts later this week.

Also, while on the subject, any new and/or better ideas for new merchandise? I\'m trying to see what will be the most cost effective products for the next run of items...

nice boob hat.  hooray for boobies!

those hoodies are super soft on the interior. cumfy as a horse nose blanket... next time you touch a horses nose, you\'ll remember that statement and realize if there was a way to make a synthetic material as soft as a horses nose, it would make the best blanket/ hoody interior ever.

Jocelyn, in no way does that statement condone cutting the small cumfy patch off 250 horse noses in order to make the most comfortable blanket you\'ve ever felt.  All I\'m saying is that horses have really soft noses and that Todd may have found a hoody manufacturer that found the secret to making a sweatshirt interiors just as soft.

No horses were harmed in the typing of this post.

^^^ This is helpful. I needed a new threat for my horses. "I\'m sending you to the glue factory," "would you like to become dog food?" and "you know, in Europe they eat horses" have pretty much become empty threats at this point. I think my horses laugh those off at this point. "Gee, a horse muzzle blanket sure would be comfy" might just do the trick on those off days.

Maybe I should go through all the posts first but I thought I\'d throw this out there.

At the Java Barn this past spring they had a few bootlegs, audio and dvd for sale at the merch booth and I would love to see more of that. I love leaving the show with some new sounds and/or vids. I got the second set of 8-23-07 and I listened to it all the way home.

Yeah, I\'m a glutton. I just can\'t get enough. The breakfast is the soundtrack to my life.

I think it would be a good idea to get some bootleg designs up and around...

Rules of course would be to
1.  get an approval from the band
2.  to do these things with $$ from your own pocket
3.  with a fair donation to the band for using their name

If you sold local shirts and other stuff to local people and you keep getting a lot of good feedback, it would be possible to get some changed to better quality and with the band\'s help.

Nothing wrong with that, just a thought :idunno:
