Post by: NickNels on September 09, 2008, 02:35:26 pm
I tend to post a lot of Breakfast shows on other bands\' message boards, so I thought I would do the same here.  I am going to try to post a few choice Biscuits tracks a week on this thread.  I hope some of you take advantage or at least give them a try.

The first track is from Camp Bisco VII this year.  The Biscuits brought it that weekend with 6 sets.  I highly recommend downloading anything from 7-18-08 or 7-19 from the archive (http://www.archive.org/details/DiscoBiscuits).  Here is a song called "Shelby Rose" from that weekend.  It\'s a song the band has really killed for the last few years.  This might not be "the best" version out there, but it\'s short and sweet and i think most of you will enjoy it.

Here is the link:

Day 2:

This next segment is from Jam On The River this year in Philadelphia.  This has served as one of the bigger hometown shows for the band the last couple years.  Despite being one of the more fun weekends of the calendar year, musically it had lost its luster the past few years.  This year brought a return to prominence with the Biscuits playing 4 sets between the Penn\'s Landing show and late night Efactory.

This particular segment is from the day show:

THe City > And the Ladies were the Rest of the Night* > Kamaole Sands^

* Inverted
^ Ending only

If you can get past the vocals in "The City" the rest of this segment really owns.  Enjoy!

I support this thread.  I didn\'t think Jam on the River or the Electric Factory show following show were very impressive, though.
Following suit, some of my favorite shows:
Haymaker October 5, 2002

http://www.archive.org/details/db2001-12-31.shnf (http://www.archive.org/details/db2001-12-31.shnf)
and of course "Tractorbeam" June 26, 2007

^^^All those are good/great shows, but I find the new listeners are more receptive to particular segment/songs than entire shows.  Pick out the really great stuff.

In regards to the JOTR show (the day set at least) was easily the best JOTR show since \'04 and on the whole it was was much better than people give it credit for, but I agree that the night show was pretty weak.

I encourage any Biscuit fans to post their favorite shows/segments here.  I will most likely continue to work backwards through the years.  All my links will be either SBDs or superior AUDs.

The biscuits really need to embark on another western tour.  They haven\'t been here since August 07.  Even The Breakfast will have been to CA twice in a half year.

Day 3:

THis next segment comes from 11-3-07 @ the House of Blues.  2nd to last show of the Biscuits Fall \'07 tour, which is regarded by many Biscuits\' fans as the best tour in years.  This show was top 3 of the tour.

I picked this segment because it encompasses two songs that have become heavy hitters with the new lineup (new drummer at least).  Check it out.  It gets a little spacey in the middle, but hang with it...it\'s worth it.

Spacebirdmatingcall > Abraxas > Spacebirdmatingcall

Day 4:

Camp Bisco VI...The 6th installment of Camp was at the time the best to date.  THe Biscuits had finally situated themselves in an area (Mariaville, NY) that would insulate them from the outside world (cops) and allow for enough room to accomodate fans for years to come with this ever-expanding festival.  Great acts that weekend included THe Breakfast, Hallucinogen in Dub, Girl Talk, STS9 (PA set), Daft Rock, New Deal, and many more...

As far as the Biscuits go, unfortunately (musically) this was one of their least memorable performances...with the exception of the impromptu Afternoon set.  The time slot orignally scheduled for "The New Originals" wasn\'t happening due to Simon Posford absence so the Biscuits took the stage to fill the void...what resulted was a performance that was easily in the top 3 sets of the year.

I would have liked to get the SBD for this, but unfortunately I lost my copy and can\'t find the files.  The source that i\'m posting is from the archive.org source.  It\'s an AUD matrix.  It sounds very good.

Glastonbury* > Basis for a Day > Gangster Jam > Shem-Rah Boo > Basis for a Day

Day 5:

5-25-07 Highline Ballroom; New York, NY

This show was a the first time the Disco Biscuits played the Highline Ballroom.  I personally love this place.  Great sound, air conditioning, and beer service on the dance floor...and it\'s tiny.  Due to size constrictions this ticket was in high demand.  Anyway this show was incredibly tight.  Short and sweet first and second set, but it had the feel of an old school biscuits show...something that you can\'t get from many East Coast shows these days with this band.

As good as the 1st and 2nd sets were, the Biscuits came out and played one of their best encores ever...at least in the Allen era.  The Very Moon is one of my favorite songs and it segued flawlessly into the end of Mr. Don, a song not well known for its climatic ending, yet one (in my opinion) that rivals the end of Basis, Waves, or any other heavy hitter.

Encore: The Very Moon > Mr. Don*

Definetly good times...Highline > Jam on the River.  Lots of rain that weekend, but the STS9 show and the late night biscuits were great.  Also really dug that Sweating Bullets and Robots they snuck into the day set before getting a rain out.  I think i\'m going to post that Robots.  I have a great SBD copy

Next show(s) are the New Year\'s Eve run.  5 nights at the Nokia theatre in Times Square.  12/31 is already sold out.  I would hop on a ticket ASAP.  I think a good show to catch would be 12/27.  The Egg is playing setbreak.  Should be a lot of fun.

Definetly check out what i\'ve posted so far...i think this would be a good re-introduction to the band for you Zappa.

11/02/01 Crystal Ballroom, Portland, OR
Set I: Koyaanisqatsi Jam> Above The Waves*> The Overture*> Floes

*inverted

In the middle of their hugely popular Fall \'01 tour, The Disco Biscuits played a quadfecta of shows that featured spontaneous scores to movies that played in the background.  On the third night of this run, the band segued out of the opening act (DJ Mauricio) and into an improvised score to Godfrey Reggio\'s \'Koyaanisqatsi,\' a 1982 film whose original score was composed by Philip Glass.  The \'Koyaanisqatsi Jam\' showcases the band\'s ability to improvise as well as their penchant for dropping a jam down to almost nothing and then building it back up to a fist-pumping, head-banging, steeringwheel-punching climax - music that closely mirrored the slow motion/fast motion cinematography of the scenes playing behind them.  The peak of the jam explodes into the energetic ending of \'Above the Waves\' (not before a quick \'Above the Waves\' peak fake-out...you heard me).  The composed ending/beginning of \'Waves\' follow (as this version was inverted) and with the jam that ensues, the Biscuits set the tone for the rest of the set.  A driving, dark jam seamlessly leads to an inverted version of the Biscuits most classically inspired tune, \'The Overture.\'  The five minutes of the composed ending/beginning of this song offer a jarring juxtaposition to the rest of the set without disrupting the flow - another band strength. \'The Overture,\' which historically kicked off some off the grimiest DnB jams the band has ever played led instead to a jam that was almost a continuation of the haunting jam that preceded it.  It was clear that during this Halloween weekend, not even an upbeat classical piece could pull this band from the spooky depths in which it found itself.  In drifting away from the \'The Overture\' towards the set-closing \'Floes,\' a 10-minute sequence arises where it\'s impossible to tell if they\'re playing one of the songs, both of the songs, or something altogether different.  The uncertainty ends when the growling intro to \'Floes\' begins.  Although the song is a little more jambandy than most of the Biscuits\' songs, the electronic element still shines through as the dark theme of the set continues and finds its way to a slightly dubby, yet still driving, jam.  Soon, they reach the epic, swirling finale of \'Floes,\' an ending that stands out in the catalog of a band that prides itself on epic endings.

I urge anybody and everybody to download this set.  Even though I first heard it on CD, this segment went a long way in helping me "get" the Disco Biscuits. Enjoy

Day 6:

2/15/07 - Starland Ballroom - Sayreville, NJ

This was a really fun show from 2007.  This show was the 2nd ever \'Spin the Wheel\' show.  A giant casino-style wheel was placed on stage during the show.  After each song the wheel was spun and whatever came up the band would play.  Many rarities and covers were on the wheel in additional to several spots labeled "HEAT".  At the end of the first set the wheel landed on one of these spots.  Dan Berkowitz held the card for everyone to see and when he flipped it over, "CRICKETS" was printed on the reverse side.

THis version of "Crickets" is widely considered the best crickets with Allen.  Excellent stand-alone version.

PEACHES...i think you will enjoy this.

Day 7:

12/31/06 Tweeter Center - Camden, NJ

The Disco Biscuits first major "arena" headlining gig.  This show, which culminated an amazing NYE run, featured Keller Williams (opening), Simon Posford (setbreak), and ?uestlove (post show).  I\'ve never thought I would see this many people at a Biscuits show.

THis particular segment closed out a creative second set that was seemlessly woven together.  I think what sold the moment for me was the emotion that was exhibited on stage and came through brilliantly in the music.  Therapy, which leaves something to be desired in the lyrics department, has a deep personal connection with Brownstein (bass player).  He even misses a line because he was so choked up on stage, but quickly refocuses to tie this piece together.  Anyway...this segment features the Disco Biscuits debut of Orch Theme and was a great set closer and my favorite segment from their \'06 NYE run.  I love the light and dark juxtaposition it has going on.  Enjoy!

10/4/02 is better than 10/5/02

both are better than 99.9% of all biscuit shows

the level of tightness and intensity of the jams is very rare and both shows are a very good listen every single second from start to finish whether your a newb or hardcore fan.

If dont to listen much bisco these might get you hooked but finding other shows as good as these will be difficult so you might lose interest quickly because many of their shows and jams flat out suck and will put you to sleep or make you cringe.

I loved them back in the day but I haver never been really enthrawled by much of the post sammy era stuff that I have seen or heard.  I have not paid much attention to it or seen many shows the last 3  years or so though so I might be missing out. who knows.

Excellent choice.. That night was a fantastic night of music with John Scofield and then Soulive opening for the biscuits. Great introductory show and killer after party with Particle at the Knitting Factory I remember correctly.

That show was actually offered for download courtesy of me after I had a little talk with their management :)

12/28/06 - Sonar - Baltimore, MD

When I said "this is my favorite segment of the NYE Run \'06" this is what I really meant:

Mindless Dribble > Little Shimmy in a Conga Line* > Songs of Joy

* Inverted

Specifically the Dribble and SHimmy outro jams

ha! my apologies. i know in the land\'o the biscuits, you need to uphold a strong heady wookie exterior. my sincerest regrets in shattering that very essence. ;)

but for real, i think that its pretty cool that you can experience such intimacy with a band that has grown to be so huge. it\'s amazing that you can be not just musically on the same page with the members but actually have the ability to decipher their thoughts and emotions. to me, that\'s what makes live music so real.... im proud to feel that close to any band or musician.

Anyone noticed that Archive.org is weird now?  Like when I try to download biscuits songs from a show, in the "vbr" format, it opens up Quicktime instead of downloading the song.  I would download the whole show at once, but I don\'t have software to unzip zip files.
Any help appreciated, ulee want biscuits

VBR is definetly what you want...much better than the alternative mp3 format.

Rather than just clicking on the file, right-click it instead.  It will give you the option to "Save As"...this will allow you to d/l the files on your computer vs. just streaming them online.

Day 9 -

8/25/06 Camp Bisco V - Hunter Mtn, NY

When I think of this weekend 3 things come to mind.  (1) Rain.  All Weekend.  It sucked.  If I was not completely face\'d the entire weekend, it would have been miserable.  (2) 5am drum circles.  The rain didn\'t stop the drum circle, which is the worst part about festivals.  Ask Juliana ;) (3) Cops.  The Biscuits will never be invited back to Hunter Mtn.  Cops were giving pat downs to everyone traveling between the camp sites and the stage...ridiculous.  I think about 60 people were arrested this weekend.

The Good Stuff:  Music (with the exception of one set) was spectacular.  Really couldn\'t ask for a better performance.  This particular post contains MY FAVORITE SEGMENT W/ ALLEN as the drummer.  Not much more to say.  Enjoy!

I did some Breakfast marketing over on the Disco Biscuits board today.

BiscoRadio, the one with sane people, not PT. Thought I may share the link.

BiscoRadio is a good place to find out more about the Biscuits without sifting through the crap on PT.

6/23/06 The Stone Pony - Asbury Park, NJ

One of the best versions of I-Man i\'ve ever heard and a great second set from start to finish.  This is a must listen.  I\'ll let someone else describe it.  I\'m pretty sure this is the weekend i met Colin (wiredchicken) through Walsh.  I then proceeded to drive home (NJ > CT) in 4th gear because my car lost its 5th gear on the highway on the way down...just remembered that.  Classic.  Enjoy!

I first met wiredchicken at the Biscuits 10th Anniversary show who kindly got me in for free which made up for him constantly calling me "squirrelly" all night.

Later that evening, I met the one and only Zuke. Who to this day is the only person I\'ve witnessed sleeping through a rager in a hotel room.

Good times.

Have never heard any Biscuits I haven\'t liked.

In the end it worked out. You can call me Squirrelly anytime. Mucho gracias.

What do you have to do to get a nickname like, Squirrelly? One of my friends girlfriends continually calls me Sprinkler and I don\'t know why.

Day 11:

Bringing it back: THe Sammy Years

The first set I will post was one of Sammy\'s Last.  Camp Bisco IV Van Etten, NY (8/26/06).  THis is the first set of the weekend and easily in my top 5 for best Biscuits sets I\'ve seen live.  They played for almost 2 hours straight through with no stops.

I will note this isn\'t the best set for a Biscuits n00b.  It\'s really far out there.  Ulee can vouch for that.

I: Astronaut > Shem-Rah Boo* > Astronaut > Stone > Devil\'s Waltz > Save the Robots > Hot Air Balloon

*Unfinished

Enjoy

I love the light set up they had for Camp IV.  I remember several times really just looking up and looking at the display over my head.  It added a very cool effect to what they had going on musically and on-stage.

I can\'t remember...did they have the 4-foot stage lights for this?  i think they had them for NYE \'05 too?  I loved those.

Benny Booms...i will add the Sister Judy\'s if I come across it.

Everyone else...I would especially listen to the first part of the first set.  My favorite part is the Astronaut > Stone > DW > Robots segment...So so so good.

The segue into robots is CRAZY.  If you would like to hear \'Evil Clown Music\' segued directly into the most 5 minute Triumphant, \'Harry Hood-like, ridiculous jam (maybe ever) check out the DW > Robots specifically.  It will not disappoint

If you are going to \'bring back the sammy years\' what are you doing posting his last show when you have the opportunity to throw some crazy fucking fantastic shit out. Particularly if you are choosing to present a show with songs that are basically not even played at all anymore (stone/waltz, acetobee :pout:). Yes, probably the best show I saw in 06 (not saying much)
I think Haymaker, Nights, Meatcamp, Trancemission rightfully deserve to make appearances in this thread. Or even some of the wild local shows at the Webster ..4/12, 11/28 or 11/29/03.
If I wasn\'t so busy I would dole out tons of this epicness. I\'ll get on it STAT

NYE \'04 was definitely a great run of shows.  They are truly underrated, especially by those who were not there.

I would have to disagree about the best 5 night run ever though.  I would have to give that to 7/23/03 - 7/27/03 Colorado run.  I think the sound they had going during most of 2003 was stylistically my favorite Biscuits.

1/2/04 At the Electric Factory was an amazing set. My favorite dribble experience, hands down (though it\'s only a part). I listen to this set often.

5/9/04 The first time the Biscuits played the Starland, was also a hot ass show.

New Year\'s run was good. I loved 12.27 at the Palace Bullets, Judys CRATER!! drool drool drool.

Georgetown was the worst Biscuits experience I have ever had

ha this was my third or fourth biscuits show. i really didn\'t know their performance style at all (i basically showed up at their shows expecting to hear things exactly how they were played on uncivilized area/senor boombox ) honestly, all i really remember about this show was how much of a nasty sweatbox the gym that they played in was that evening.

Day 12:

5/27/05 Sonar; Baltimore, MD

This was the best show from 2004-05.  First time the Biscuits had played this hole.  Definitely not the greatest venue...pillars on the dance floor blocking the sound, almost inaccessible bars, condensation dripping from the ceilings, but the Biscuits threw down hard.  This show has a very good flow from start to finish.  The music actually really fit well with the ambiance that room created.

My favorite segments are the Pygmy > Morph (Inverted) > Spaga and the Triumph > Boop (Inverted) > Nughuffer (end).

I am uploading the entire show so check it out.

05/27/05 Sonar Lounge, Baltimore, MD
Set I: King of the World> Digital Buddha, Once The Fiddler Paid, Pygmy Twylyte> Morph Dusseldorf1> Spaga, Chemical Warfare Brigade

Haven\'t listened to it yet, but I heard that is a great segment!

Day 13:

A return to contemporary Biscuits...

I know I should be posting some older stuff now, but I haven\'t updated this thread in a while.  I wanted to throw out some 2009 Biscuits for those of you who are still on the fence with the upcoming Klein Memorial show coming up on 4/19/09 in Bridgeport.

THis segment is from the 2-night stand the Biscuits played in Colorado this past February.  They played back-to-back 3 set shows for the first time in a long time (or ever).  THese 2 shows were largely agreed upon to be the best 2 shows of the entire tour.  Personally I really liked the 2nd night, but this segment is the first set first night.  I chose this because it includes songs that I don\'t think i\'ve posted on any other part of this thread.

Disco Biscuits - 2.13.09 - Ogden Theatre; Denver, CO

I: Uber Glue > Shem-Rah Boo* > Lunar Pursuit > Mindless Dribble* > Tricycle > Reactor#

* Unfinished
# Ending Only

the second set from that 2/13 show is sick also. memphis>handcuffs>memphis is butter and the abraxas is tight...when they\'re nailing abraxas it\'s gonna be a good show

nicknels, listen to that iman>ladies. i\'m not into listening to recordings too much these days, but i\'m glad i did with that segment

That  Humu > Great Abyss > Spraypaint segment is one of my favorites since Allen joined the band.  It\'s posted earlier in this thread if anyone is interested.

Not every version is going to be great, they throw in a good amount of variation in their jams and composed sections.

upon first listen:

generic beat & cheeseball production....couple bells and whistles in the second half that are interesting.

I\'m sure people will eat this junk up.

Second listen: a little more catchy

This is club music for the masses; I prefer "lounge" in most cases and SF/west coast has lots of the best stuff.

I been on a SER biscuits binge lately. probably the most i have ever listened to them since i first discovered them in like 2001.  They are just really fuckin good these days. real polished sounding. Allen is nasty. new songs are good. jamming is real high energy and really tasteful at times. lots to like and not much to hate on. I really wanna get out to a show. download some shit from 07, 08, 09. hang with it for a sec even if it feels knee jerk awkward at first. It will be worth it. Trust me.

I\'ll post a show..

glad you like it. i didn\'t like it much at first and ragged on nicknels because he liked it immediately. it\'s grown on me too. when i get a few free moments i\'ll search archive.org and find some barber shredding circa \'98 so you can see what he\'s capable of (and then become frustrated with what he does now lol)

Is this supposed to be good?
\'cause I feel like I wasted the past hour or so.
I really really tried.
I actually listened to the whole thing painful as it was at times.

Wow they are incredibly repetitive and boring.
I must say the shit I used to hear from them makes me think they used to be pretty fucking good and I should check some of that out again but this shit sucks for me.

Oh and I don\'t think I\'ll ever complain about The Breakfast\'s vocals again after hearing this caterwauling.

exactly why i\'m loving me some biscuits right now (http://www.revuewm.com/item/81-that-s-how-you-know-it-s-sexy.html)

Quote
Let’s get things straight. The Disco Biscuits is not a jam band.

According to Jon Gutwillig, guitarist for the band, “super jam band” is the label they prefer. For those not in the know, the term “jam band” refers to bands that improvise and have “jam sessions” onstage.

“The jam bands are kind of like the old school dudes like Phish and Widespread Panic, The Allman Brothers – just anyone who isn’t really computer savvy in their musical way.”

Gutwillig describes super jam bands as a “new world of jam bands.” He says the bands are more electronic, and lists The Disco Biscuits, Sound Tribe Sector 9, as well as other up-and-coming artists as bands that have spearheaded the genre.

“People would say, ‘Are you a jam band?’ and we would say, ‘Well, maybe.’ And that just pisses everybody off,” Gutwillig said. “So what we had to do was reclassify the music business, just like they reclassified alternative rock from normal rock.”

The Biscuits still jam – just with the art of technology such as computers, and now, inspiration from drum and bass-influenced dubsteps. In fact, Gutwillig says the jam sessions are what set The Disco Biscuits apart from other bands.

“I feel that, during those improv sessions, that we’re really connecting with the audience,” he says. “We’ve been putting in a lot of new stuff and it sort of creates a new relationship with you and the audience.”

Though jam bands – and super jam bands – typically draw their influences from a multitude of genres, Gutwillig says he only listens to “sexy music.”

“I try to focus on sexy music. I don’t listen to nerdy music as much as I used to when I was a nerd,” he said.

When asked what he thinks “nerdy” music is, Gutwillig immediately responded with “Rush.”

“I think they’re the top of the list, I think they’re the universal poster boys for nerdy,” Gutwillig said. “Devo, you know, Devo’s really nerdy…would I ever listen to Devo on purpose? No.”

For those unsure of how to classify the nerdy from the sexy, Gutwillig has a system. Though be warned, the system is not quite fool-proof.

“The main indicator is, put a bunch of girls in a room and put the song on and see what they do,” said Gutwillig, who also mentioned that “11 out of 10” guys are not capable of being indicators for what’s sexy. “I think most [girls] have pretty intrinsic knowledge of what’s sexy and what’s not sexy…They can’t even tell you it; you can just kind of tell by the way they move.”
This theory can be easily tested by putting 10 girls in a room and turning on some music. However, the experiment is not perfect, as there are some road blocks.

“If you put 10 girls in a room and they are actually not on their cell phones…now we’re talking about something that’s just impossible. So you put 10 girls in a room and you eliminate the ones that are typing with their thumbs, basically, with the remaining ones, you would want all of them to be dancing.”

And that’s how you know it’s sexy.

exactly why i\'m loving me some biscuits right now (http://www.revuewm.com/item/81-that-s-how-you-know-it-s-sexy.html)

LO-fucking-L !!

"We\'re not a jam band like Phish we\'re a super jam band"

I\'m sorry but if you compare yourself to Phish and put the word "super" in front of yourself in comparison you\'re a real d-bag.

Sorry. Computers doesn\'t make it "super". Mastering your instruments so you don\'t need to lean on computers to fill out your repetitive sound makes it "super".

Seriously that\'s some cocky bullshit right there. "Electronic Jam-Pop" sounds more appropriate to me.

That the guy would even talk down on Phish like that and say they\'re "super" in comparison = complete loss of respect...

Thank the Lord for The Breakfast if this computerized techno "jam"-shit is the "new world of jam bands"!

Agreed... didnt Brownstein have a show on Sirius or XM call Jam-tronica at one point in time?  Seems to me like that would be the best label or something of that nature.  Super jamband just sounds super arrogant to me.  I guess its all in the choice of words but I think there are plenty of other adjectives that could have been used to accurately describe thier style a bit more concisely.

I am pretty sure that everyone who commented negatively about that interview has completely misinterpreted the interview. First of all I am sure this was all said tongue in cheek. Barber definitely was not talking shit about phish. The disco biscuits love phish Let us not forget that starting off they covered phish frequently. Let us also not forget that at the jammy\'s much of disco biscuits were in the "headcount allstars" playing maze, wilson, and run like an antelope. Before playing maze Brownstein says "when they asked me to do this I called a few of my firends to see if they were crazy enough to do this with me" which to me means crazy enough to attempt to play phish infront of phish(who I believe received the lifetime achievment award that night).

As far as the disco biscuits naming their sound, they pretty much coined trance-fusion as their sound, it is everyone else that would like to mix all of these bands that most of us like into "jam bands". I am sure that after so many years of being called a "jamband" you start to say whatever the fuck you want in regards to it.

Here is the Headcount Allstars playing maze. Its not bad.

Well...being familiar with Barber, his sense of humor, and previous interviews, I got a big laugh out of this.

I understand how someone who doesn\'t know this guy could interpret that as "douchey", but he is just trying to be funny.  I seriously doubt by dubbing the Biscuits as a "super jam band" he meant to say they are better than Phish or GD or whatever...in fact, he might have described it as that just to get a rise out of someone who would take it literally.

If someone could find the interview that Diana did during the NYE run last year with him you\'ll see what I\'m talking about.  It\'s like a stream of unconscious thought.  Whatever comes to his head first.

In regards to the electronic/computer element of their sound...i think its great.  They need to add this.  Their sound is still growing and evolving.  They had gone as far as they can as a "non-super jamband".  They obviously have had a certain level of success (in fact more success than 90% of bands in the scene) and I think that makes me respect what they are doing now even more.  They are still experimenting and consistently taking chances.  Sure...sometimes you are going to have an off song, segment, or show, but it is completely worth it for the payoff when you get it right.  You run the risk of alienating some of your core fanbase, but at least your music doesn\'t become stagnant.

I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS BAND!

2009 was amazing.  I loved getting to see PHish again and there is no experience like them out there, but Phish is PHish.  They are safe.  They really aren\'t going to push the boundaries farther than they already have.  They seem less interested in evolving the sound and just content in playing music.

Best interview ever!:

Well said my friend. I think that is why I have no desire to see Phish, because it all seems too boring now. I miss the spontaneity.

I was going to say something similar to this, but you summed it up nicely. The Biscuits def have huge respect for Phish. Barber is being completely sarcastic in this interview, and I found it humorous. And this is coming from a guy who isn\'t a huge biscuits fan (despite my handle). Bdfree you\'re also very right, computers don\'t make you a better musician by any means, but they do add an element to music that the Biscuits have pioneered.

Gimme a break I\'m pretty sure lots of German rock bands, not to mention STS9 pioneered adding electronic tidbits to improvisational live music.

I hear the claim that Disco Biscuits "invented the genre" over and over... but I thought they started out as more or less a normal jam-band and didn\'t really start getting electronic until the early 2000\'s ... by which point STS9 was already all about this stuff.

I wasn\'t overall blown away by Phish 2009 summer tour, nor do I feel they are writing as creative and progressive music as they once were. However that doesn\'t seem to be what it\'s all about... the band is getting their chemistry back and Trey\'s chops improved pretty consistently over the course of the tour. They\'re positioned to show people what a "super jam band" really is once again.

Then again I prefer the organic over the electronic. I could listen to Neil Young jam away at age 70 or whatever for hours.

I always assumed the Biscuits must have massive respect for Phish. That\'s why I was surprised to see the statement above! Maybe I\'m not tuned in to their tongue-in-cheek humor but I think statements like that are pretty retarded and overly cocky regardless. Like how much coke did the guy blow right before saying that, really? Could see how a serious Biscuits fan would see that as a half-joke, but to an objective observer... "that\'s just dick"

I thought that was pretty funny.  Clearly he was joking.  Girls on cell phones?  Super-jam-bands?  Nerd vs. Sexy music?

I guess if you don\'t like the biscuits you will take anything they say as being arrogant/douchy/whatever.  Part of the reason the interview is so funny is because some people will take it seriously.

And if you check out through that website the writer has written a bunch of articles about a bunch of other bands that are pretty similar.  Umph is not a "jam band", they are a "progressive Jam band".  Perhaps the interviewer was a dope and Barber had a joke at her expense?

I have found that many Bisco fans will quickly tell you that they did not invent a genre, and are generally pretty informed about the music that influenced tDB.  The ones that try to claim they invented some new thing are n00bs and/or drug addicts.  Watch out for these people, because there are plenty of them around.

Personally I think bisco does their thing well, nice to hear them challenging themselves musically recently, I had all but written them off a few years back.  The vocals still suck though.

Day 16:

Some more contemporary Biscuits for ya.

THis is set I from the most recent show they played in BKNY.  I don\'t think this was the best show of the run, but I really enjoyed it at the show and listening back to it the other night.  Brooklyn Bowl is a really sweet venue.  Recently renovated, bowling lanes, good sound and reasonable drink prices...Swanky!

The Disco Biscuits 10-11-09; Brooklyn Bowl, BKNY

I: Intro, Loose Change, Pimp Blue Rikki > Mindless Dribble > Minions > King of the World > Mindless Dribble > King of the World

Loose Change and Pimp Blue Rikki are new songs.  The set really starts to get going right at the start of the Dribble Segment.  Minions might be my favorite new song right now.

Oh shit!  Didn\'t even realize that was 10 years ago today.  I almost threw this on yesterday on the way from BAR not even realizing the coincidence.  This is the song/version that turned me onto the DiscoBiscuits as well.  I remember seeing a 35 min. biscuits song on Kazaa and decided to give it a try.  Yeah, I suggest everyone to give it a shot.  This is what started the madness.

When they played trance-fusion, it was bloody good. Now, the fusion is all but gone, to be replaced by electronica. I wonder how long it will be before it\'s just Barber and a nameless guy on a sequencer.

And who, even tongue in cheek, anyone could mention them as a "super" jamband? "Super" is a contraction of superlative, which compared to the Dead and Phish, they are not.

Even though it is a rotating list, here are a few of my fav. songs:

House Dog Party Favor
Aceetobee
Basis for a Day
Mindless Dribble
Mr. Don
Jigsaw Earth
Floes
Aquatic Ape (Inverted)

I have been requesting MEMPHIS b/c that is a song Tim mentioned he would possibly play.  And even though I like the song, it probably wouldn\'t be in my top 10

That\'s a very old school list, to which I would add the aforementioned SOTW, Bazaar, Bernstein and Grass is Green. To me Jigsaw Earth would be my second favourite track.

As for knowing SOTW, visiting the archive to increase my biscuits shows, any show with Story gets checked out. One of my favourite versions remains the All Good version from 2000(?) - no bass on that show IIRC, but it was the first time I has heard the song, so it\'s kind of special. I\'ve got Wind At Four To Fly too.

The 4 day New England run was a blast.  I\'ll try to get some more sets/shows/highlighs up as they become available.

set II if anyone is interested

II: Intro, On Time, Save the Robots > Basis for a Day, Donde, Mirrors > Save the Robots, IMan

E: Rockafella

Hilarious watching a guy in OB yesterday trying to give tickets away for last night\'s show at the 4th and B
I also heard if you did not have a ticket the girl at the box office would just point at someone offering free tickets on the street.

Why is that hilarious?  Biscuits are not a West Coast band...they are there once or twice a year.  They really don\'t have much of a following in San Diego.  I imagine the secondary ticket market is terrible.  If I was the manager and I had a half full room, I would absolutely let people in for a discounted or free ticket.  At least they might spend some money at the bar.

But hey, thanks for the douchey comment about a band you have made it painfully clear you don\'t like!

So were you just scoping out a venue where a band you don\'t like was playing so you can make some arrogant comment about them?

I thought there was supposed to be a lot of fun stuff to do on the west coast, besides sippin\' haterade all day.

I just find it amusing that you and Leith bitch endlessly about people discussing the Disco Biscuits on .info, when more than half the posts in this thread are from you guys, the other half responding to the BS you guys had to say.  So if neither of you ever entered the thread it would be 2 pages long and buried a long time ago.

I have no problem with this thread or Disco Biscuits discussion. Just don\'t spill it over to my Grateful Dead thread :P

I\'m just here to pass the time and joke around with my friends and family brah.. sometimes we agree, sometimes we don\'t. Makes no difference when it comes time for a Breakfast show. Nick and Zuke are probably the biggest fans of Biscuits around these parts and I disagree with them on taste-in-music issues all the time. But I also happen to love these guys and consider them friends in real life

Besides, you gotta admit Leith / me / others who\'ve come in here to say Biscuits suck have at least made your thread more interesting. Plus I did listen to some of the DB suggestions people have linked up. Just happened not to like most of them. Also many of my friends including my roommate are big Biscuits fans so if anything my opinion is far from uninformed. I did like the "Mirrors" music video I saw when Nick and Zuke were up in Noho for the Biscuits show though.

Is what it is.

that\'s laughs!  probably more flip flops at that bisco show than ever before too.

moving my bisco thoughts out of the dead thread.

listening to 1-4-07.

first off, the moe. echoes pwns the db version.  at least this one.

the > above the waves was decent... nothing to ground breaking.

the great abyss lost me and bored me.  i skipped to cyclone which is pretty sexy.  i am excited to hear it back > echoes.

the > echoes is the best segue of the bunch.  although i think the playing during the last part of echoes is pretty sloppy.

the bernstein & chasnoff encore is fun.  probably my fav song from set II

Ha!  I actually just listened to it myself.  I still like the segment, but not really because of Echoes...it just happens to be the bookends there.  I will check out the moe. segment.  To be honest, I\'m sure apples to apples moe.\'s version probably does pwn tdb\'s version.

I don\'t know why I like the Biscuits so much, but it\'s not because of musical brilliance or perfect execution.  It\'s just the music that strikes my soul and moves my feet (hands, body, and head).  It\'s personal and I don\'t expect anyone else to understand it other than me.  So if you want to rational discussion and tell me why you like or don\'t like it...sure.  Just don\'t rattle off shit about the scene, the fans, the untz, or any crap like that because it makes you sound stupid and elitist.
Title: (Disco) Biscuits for Breakfast(.info)

i started listening to this to have a conversation about music and do an apple to apples comparison of Echoes.

the biscuits are fun.  i feel like they have some moments of musical brilliance, but they are an indulgent sort of fun.  there is something at a very base, raw level that gives their music its appeal - to me at least.  i tend to like experiencing their shows live more than a lot of what translates on tape.  that might have something to do with mind bending chemicals as well.  i won\'t rule that out.

i would be very curious to hear your thoughts on the moe. version.  i would suggest listening to the echoes to end set I  and then the stash, meat, echoes > eyes is good stuff.  if you skip anything, i would skip the stash - def listen to the meat though!  it was off the hook!

So my roommate made a pretty heady Biscuits mix and I was pretty impressed. Finally somebody was able to break through to me with this stuff!

Here\'s what he played for me:

"mirrors from redrocks this year, confrontation>lunar pursuit>inv reactor>confrontation from calvin nite one, and jigsaw earth>munchkin invasion>jigsaw earth from 930 club like 10.3.09"

Good shit. I guess Barbar can play guitar!

Happy New Year!
As we turn the corner into 2010, we can’t help but look back on some great times in 2009 including our first headlining Red Rocks appearance, our debut performance on Mt. Fuji at Fuji Rock Festival in Japan, our set at Rothbury and all of the amazing tour dates in between. And of course we wrapped it up in grand fashion with 5 amazing nights in Times Square in New York City. The energy in the Nokia was off the charts, which was fitting for the end of 2009, possibly the most supercharged year we have had all decade! We are excited to carry that momentum into 2010!

It\'s funny because earlier this week I said I would never see another show @ The Webster.  The place really is awful.  Terrible location, shitty sound and an awful bar area and drink policy.

I would like to see them @ Lupo\'s and Boston HOB as well, but Friday shows out of state are tough to make it to.

Disco Biscuits @ The Klein in Bridgeport on 4/22!

Great venue!

Indeed it is. Must be a blast to see tDB there. When do these go on sale?

none of their winter/spring tour dates have been "officially" announced.  They were supposed to announce their tour this past weekend, but in typical Biscuits fashion are running late.  I would expect to have details sometime in the next week or so...

Keep me in the know, bro. I am interested in this fiasco.

Thursday night in the BPort with tDB.

Lets do it! I got my w0ok hat and I am ready!

The thing that has me interested is Trancemission which they haven\'t done since \'03.

Selling one ticket for $30 to tDB at The Egg in Albany, NY [http://www.theegg.org] on 3/18/2010 (thursday).  I paid $36.25 through biscotix, and was really excited to see a show inside The Egg, but a family vacation is now planned for that week.  The ticket is Will Call, I have to email musictoday.com with the will call name at least 3 days before the event.  Only thing I ask is that you enjoy the show double, for me too ;).

Link:

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=N56NB8IZ (SBD 320)

Just relistening to this today.  Great set...maybe one of my favorite of the year.  It really flows well from Pimp Blue Rikki on.  I highly recommend the d/l if you haven\'t checked it out yet.

thanks, but i got my signed copy in the mail yesterday :). not really too thrilled with the album. i knew most of the songs and liked most of the ones i knew, but it\'s not very cohesive. i feel like the exclusion of \'fish out of water,\' \'big wrecking ball,\' and the \'the city\' would have helped the album flow a lot more. and i really like \'fish out of water\'...just has no business being on the same cd as most of the other songs. same with \'big wrecking ball.\' \'the city\' is way overproduced and it\'s a shitty song to begin with. however, \'uberglue\' was a big surprise and might be my favorite song on the album. both \'rain song\' and \'quad d\' fit the album nicely and are decent songs in their own right. it will be interesting to see if/how they incorporate female vocals into the live show.  so it\'s frustrating that after 7 years of production they could have added a lot by subtraction. it\'s definitely not as good as TMTP (and i can\'t imagine it ever will be), but there is enough good music on the album for it to grow on me

I didn\'t listen to all of it, but heard a pretty good chunk.  It was certainly not the most cohesive show and lacked a lot of flow with all the new songs and banter between songs.  That being said, there were definitely some cool jams and they took some of the new songs for a walk...Loose Change and Konkrete immediately come to mind.

People on PT hate on the best shows of the year, so it is no surprise they jumped all over this one.  It was a CD release show the night after they played an old skool biscuits show (in the same building).  It was pretty much to be expected.  I probably would have been pissed if I spent $30 to go, but I don\'t know how you can complain about a free stream

ugh Philly night two was awful. After being a biscuits fan for years I finaly got the oppurtunity to see them, so me and three friends trek from mass to philly for what had to be the worst set list ever. They kept pumping out the new songs and nobody was digging it. Add to that like six guest vocalist who sucked and tons of on stage babbling, including a ton of Mighty boosh references. Great city, fun time, terrible show.

ugh Philly night two was awful. After being a biscuits fan for years I finaly got the oppurtunity to see them, so me and three friends trek from mass to philly for what had to be the worst set list ever. They kept pumping out the new songs and nobody was digging it. Add to that like six guest vocalist who sucked and tons of on stage babbling, including a ton of Mighty boosh references. yeah i watched some of the rebroadcast of that live stream for their release party, and wow they sounded awful. the guest vocalists were SO BAD! Even worse than barber and brownie! Just goes to show how much the studio can affect one\'s voice.

eeeeg, \'fish out of water\' was soooo stuck in my head last night, repeating over and over... After a couple of listens, I do like the new album.  I don\'t love it, but a lot of the songs are decent.  (I still prefer Senor Boombox, my first exposure to the Biscuits.) It\'s interesting how many radio-friendly tracks there are on Planet Anthem.    I am excited to hear some great jams coming out of these new songs!

Here\'s my take on last night\'s Boston show that I wrote for Melophobe.com  Too bad they have no sense of urgency when it comes to posting stuff even though I implored them.  It\'s now a .info exclusive...enjoy!

What REALLY Happened At Disco Biscuits 3/19/2010

By Seth Wolfman

The Biscuits are coming!  The Biscuits are coming!  One if by land, two if by sea!  Three if by spaceship!  Well, hide the women and children and hang three lanterns in the Old North…the Disco Biscuits are in Boston.  Oh boy, this was a doozie…

The night before the show, lead guitarist Barber breaks his wrist.  The official band statement posted on the will-call window says that he fell backstage at the show the night before.  It’s the most classic excuse in the book, but that’s fine.  The band is entitled to cover up for their man. It’s really not all that important how it happened, it just matters that it happened and he’s out for 3-4 weeks.  But get this…the letter goes on to state that the band is refunding everyone’s tickets 100%.  Wow.  Everyone should tip their crooked hat to the band.  What a great call.  One would figure that the band had two options: either cancel the show and refund everyone’s money, or patch together a show and keep the money.  But to go through with the show AND give it to everyone for free?  That’s as good as it gets right there.  With a sold out show at $25 per ticket, that’s $25,000 coming straight out of the Biscuit bank account. You know the House of Blues isn’t going to take a hit because some guy in some band hurt himself.  HOB is still getting theirs.  Way to go Bisco, that’s how it’s done!

Things get even better.  The three remaining band members come out and start the show “Driscuit” style with just drums, bass, and keys.  Why the heck not?  I’m not a Barber hater by any means, but you don’t need guitar to throw down an earth-shaking drum n bass rinseout.  Just ask The New Deal.  So they come out and crush a 15-minute jungle jam that almost justified the price of the ticket on its own (had it not already been refunded).  It’s funny…there are myriad examples in sports where teams actually play better in the short term when the star player gets hurt, because everyone else really has to focus.  In the long term you need your best guys to win, but for a couple of games teams often do well due to the heightened focus of everyone who’s left.  I believe that The Disco Biscuits experienced that tonight.  After a great opener they trot out a guitar player who they scraped up that afternoon.  He wasn’t that great but he wasn’t bad either and he drove 8 hours round trip from Burlington, VT to be there so you gotta give him some love.  The jams were still thick and juicy, the place is still bumping.  Then they bring out the guitar player from Indobox, the opening band from Boston.  Wouldn’t you know it, the guy is a Bisco fan.  He’s got a Mars Volta haircut and he’s dressed like he’s in Weezer.  This might work out.  He takes the stage and within ten seconds he’s singing the lead vocals on Helicopters!  Look out below!  Another great jam ensues and off we go to setbreak to a thunderous ovation.  Show: SAVED!

Or so we thought.

45 minutes into setbreak, they turn all the lights on and kill the PA music.  But nothing happens.  Everyone continued their normal conversations, but I got the distinct feeling that something very fishy was going down.  Another ten minutes goes by like this, and setbreak is just short of an hour long.

Then it happens.

A HOB employee comes out and announces that the show is canceled due to “technical difficulties.”  The entire band and even the two guest guitarists are on the side of the stage in what appears to be heated discussion with some HOB staff.  Brownie looks pissed.  This was clearly not the band’s call.  They obviously had gone all-out to pull off this show, even recruiting guitarists to drive four hours to the show on six hours notice.  I can guarantee that the HOB pulled the plug, the only question is why.  They had been kicking people out left and right all night.  Not too unusual for this venue at any show, and not unusual for a Bisco show where there’s a lot of enforcement.  The place was definitely crowded but was also noticeably short for a sold out show.  My best guess is that they just got sick of it.  Someone at HOB with the power to do so probably just figured, “Screw this show…these kids are out of control, they’re too spun to buy drinks, the band’s guitar player isn’t even here, it was a free show anyway…let’s pull the plug.”  Yes, a few idiots threw drinks at the stage, which only risked damaging the band’s equipment.  No, it was not a full scale riot.  Brownie came out and diffused the situation quickly.  I do not consider the drink-throwing to be a Bisco fan problem.  I don’t think there’s any show on earth you could cancel at setbreak without a couple of morons throwing drinks.  Maybe Yanni.  Aside from that, there’s gonna be morons at any show.

In the end, money talks.  This is probably why HOB canceled the show.  It is also why Bisco came out on top tonight.  Despite the odds being stacked against them they kept the show on, gave everyone their money back before the show even started, and then somehow delivered an excellent set.  They then fought to stay on when the house said no more.  Huge props to the band.  And with the exception of a couple of drink-throwing morons, props to the fans as well for giving the show a chance and getting down hard in the face of adversity.  I’m glad I was there.  It was well worth the $0 it cost me.  I’ll save getting mad until the next time a Bisco show ends before midnight…which will hopefully never happen again.

Thanks for your perspective Wolfman. any truth to the rumors that the show was canceled due to **** smoke backstage? do you think the Biscuits are gonna break up, replace Barber for good, or work shit out and keep on untzin? The most important question, ARE THEY FUCKIN SER WITH THAT NEW ALBUM?

This might be the excuse, but it cannot possibly be the actual reason.  Just think it through.  Every band smokes pot backstage.  Does every show get shut down?  No.  If any rock club decided they were shutting down bands that smoke pot in the green room, the club would be out of business in a minute.  The real reason is the one I wrote above:

"Someone at HOB with the power to do so probably just figured, “Screw this show…these kids are out of control, they’re too spun to buy drinks, the band’s guitar player isn’t even here, it was a free show anyway…let’s pull the plug."

If they didn\'t say as much but rather just made the excuse that the band was smoking pot, then that\'s the excuse.  But it cannot possibly be the actual reason the show got shut down.

i heard the fire marshall was there and wasn\'t to happy about the ***** cloud but that could easily be bullshit. but "someone at the HOB just decided to shut it down cause bisco kids were spun" doesn\'t really add up to me.

Wow.... so between the new album no one likes, the album release show very few people liked, barber\'s accident, and last night, this has been a great week in bisco history! I\'m glad I caught the egg show, which was awesome....

I\'ve been reading a lot of PT Bisco today and people are saying the fire marshall was there because of the **** and the cops didn\'t shut the show down... the fire marshall did, and HOB wanted it go on. I\'m pretty intrigued here, I\'d really like to know what actually went down.... this is a FUCKED situation that definitely does not occur everyday!

Like you said, people are always blazing backstage at shows.... I can\'t figure this out. If you\'re right that some dude with the power at HOB shut it down, that\'s incredibly lame. When it rains it pours eh?

The Fire Marshall rumor also makes no sense whatsoever.  Some spun kid probably said it outside the show, some other spun kid heard it and posted it on PT-Bisco, and boom, that\'s the story everyone believes.  But it makes no sense at all.  This venue is secure up the ass.  You have to clear four stations just to get in: an ID check, two ticket checks, and the most thorough frisk I have ever seen anywhere. (They searched my wallet and they made a bunch of people take off their shoes!)  They know exactly how many people are in the building.  If they\'re going over the fire code, it\'s because they have the fire marshall taken care of, as most venues do.  What a coincidence that a fire marshall randomly showed up to a show that just HAPPENS to be the band with the sketchiest fans ON EARTH and decided that was the night he was going to shut down the HOB for too many people.

The HOB shut down the show because they were sick of peeling spunions off the bathroom floor.  They were sick of the kids doing drugs who they tried to throw out only to get punches thrown back at them.  They were sick of a bunch of kids that get high and drop E instead of buying drinks.  Basically they decided enough was enough.  Their decision was made very easy by the fact that the band was already refunding everyone\'s tickets.  They took advantage of the band in this respect.

Don\'t believe the hype, just use your noggin!

I hear ya man...

(I\'m trying to come up with a funny Fire Marshall Bill joke right now but I can\'t, the effort is there, lol...)

They searched your wallet? OMFG. Sounds like this whole thing was a complete clusterfuck. Glad I wasn\'t there. Amazing what a difference a night makes. The Egg was "eggcellent"!

I\'ve seen Bisco 16 times since 2003 now, and I always feel so out of place at their shows. Being that I\'m not Shady McShadeball and all... but I genuinely enjoy their music and don\'t wanna stop going! I just try to concentrate on the music and ignore all the morons around me.... thank god the Breakfast community isn\'t like this! Where did these people come from?

And btw.... I normally buy 1-2 drinks tops at most shows I go to, if that, so praise jesus that everybody isn\'t like me in that respect, all the venues would have such shitty drink sales more friggen shows might get cancelled at setbreak!

They searched my wallet.  I already had it out of my pocket.  Dude took it in his hand and searched each individual credit card slot.  Meanwhile other people were getting thorough foot-checks...guy would massage their entire shoe from tongue to toe.  If he didn\'t like something, you had to take your shoes off and then he took a flashlight to the inside of your shoes.

You know what else is funny?  I had a pen since I was taking notes for my review.  I had it in my hand with my wallet and showed it to him plainly.  He ignored the pen.  A pen could be a deadly weapon or, with a few minor adjustments, could hold enough *** to dose half the audience.  Of course, it would also be ridiculous to forbid pens.  I\'ve never heard of a pen-related incident at a show.  But for consistency\'s sake, if you\'re doing wallet searches and inside-of-the-shoe searches, how are you going to allow a pen?  The Middle East has made me throw out my pen, which was asinine because I just walk over to the merch table and get another.

9-8-01 is a classic show with a second set palindrome. 9/01 was a great month for the band.

5/28/10 has a nice Voices > RLH > Voices segment and a great Basis through Rock Candy segment in the second set (from what I remember from that weekend).

6/4/09 was a complete Chemical Warefare Brigade opera.  I wasn\'t there and haven\'t heard it, but it got great reviews.  It also came from the time of the year where the band played the best.  6/5/09 is probably my favorite show from \'09, so this is probably worth checking out

In the first post I made about Friday night at camp, that first set has been hailed as the best set from \'10 so far.  I have yet to listen, but you might want to check it out.

I\'m probably not the greatest source of Bisco info from \'07 on.  Haven\'t seen a ton of shows lately and listened to even fewer recordings, but I would start with these.

I\'m going to listen to Friday night camp tonight and see what I think and get backto you.

This is great.  Reminds me of Diana\'s interview w/ Barber

^^^^ that T5 show from 12/29 still gives me goosebumps. Can\'t wait for NOKIA (err best buy?) in April! hands down, best venue in NYC.

Quick update for you:

Went to go see the Biscuits last week at the Nokia Theatre.  The band hasn\'t been playing much this year, but I was very impressed by their performance.  Maybe some of it had to do with being at the Nokia Theatre which is the best room in the city IMO.  Awesome sound, lights and sightlines.  They played a very creative setlist and busted out some songs I haven\'t heard in a while.

Here are the sbds from their 3 show run:

Also, it looks like they have a new studio album coming out.  Last year\'s Planet Anthem definitely had some mixed reviews and a different sound and feel than previous albums.  It looks like they are going back to their old style for this particular album.

Below is the 1st of 4 short documentaries about the new album.  This one has the studio cut of "Portal to an Empty Head".  I think it sounds great and is worth checking out if you have a few minutes.
