Rockers wrapping new album, readying tour

Pearl Jam are almost finished with their follow-up to 2002\'s Riot Act. The band plans to spend the next three weeks in the studio recording vocals and mixing. If all goes according to plan, the yet-to-be-titled disc could be released as early as May.
"There\'s a lot more up-tempo stuff," says drummer Matt Cameron. "It\'s a lot more rockin\' than our last one." Song titles like "Severed Hand," "Worldwide Suicide" and "2x4" seem to reflect that harder edge. Though the track listing has not been finalized, other candidates include "Marker" and "Cold Concession."

Cameron, who teamed with guitarist Mike McCready on the track "Unemployable," characterizes the sessions as more collaborative. "We reworked everything together in the studio," he says. "It\'s a really healthy environment -- everyone really just wants to dig in and make the songs as good as they can be."

Pearl Jam hope to support the new record with a summer tour.

Pearl Jam Halfway Home On New Album

Pearl Jam is progressing on its eighth studio album in Seattle. Guitarist Mike McCready tells Billboard.com the band has "about 20-25" songs in the hopper, comprising "some ballads and some pretty harder stuff, and some Who-ish type-stuff."

In addition, McCready says Pearl Jam is approaching the project from a new angle. "How we\'re recording it is a first," he says. "We\'ve been recording for awhile, and then we\'ll sit down and listen to the songs and then take a couple of weeks off, come back and re-record them and add stuff. We generally just go in, do some demos and record."

McCready is hoping the as-yet-untitled album will be out before the end of the year, with a tour to follow. The set will be Pearl Jam\'s first for J Records/BMG, following the dissolution of its career-long relationship with Epic.

However, the guitarist says Pearl Jam is "not anywhere close to being done. We\'re about halfway there. It\'s going to be a really awesome record, and I\'m not just saying that like every band member says it. It\'s been really exciting."

The opportunity to revisit and potentially add to songs has been a welcome one, the guitarist says. "I\'ve woken up a few times and had a riff going in my head that I really liked, say, of [bassist] Jeff [Ament]\'s or something," he offers. "It\'s like, OK, cool. That one is sticking in my head. I want to keep doing that. Let\'s do that. Whereas before, you\'d just do it and it\'d be done."

Last month during a benefit at Seattle\'s Paramount Theatre, the band unveiled a fast, punky song co-written by McCready with guitarist Stone Gossard, tentatively titled "Crapshoot Rapture."

"I\'m certainly by no means a punk rocker at all," McCready says with a laugh. "But, the guys in my band are. Jeff and Stone and Ed have that in them, and those guys bring that out of me. We have this joke that my punk is more Dio-like."

As previously reported, McCready will lead the U.F.O. tribute band Flight To Mars at a benefit tomorrow (April 8) at Seattle\'s Showbox for the Northwest chapter of the Crohn\'s and Colitis Foundation. Earlier in the day, he will serve as the featured speaker at a CCFA luncheon at Seattle\'s Westin.

The first taste of music from the new Pearl Jam album, the single "World Wide Suicide," was digitally delivered by J Records this morning (Feb. 24) to U.S. rock radio outlets in the form of a 15-second chorus snippet. The full track, which resembles the groove-driven 1998 single "Do the Evolution," isn\'t due to impact stations for another two weeks.

At deadline, no other details have been confirmed about the as-yet-untitled album, which will be Pearl Jam\'s studio debut for J. It\'s the follow-up to 2002\'s Epic swan song "Riot Act," which has sold 497,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

Before the band gets busy with promotion and touring, guitarist Mike McCready will stage a March 18 benefit for the Crohn\'s and Colitis Foundation at Seattle\'s Showbox. McCready will play with his UFO tribute band, Flight To Mars, on a bill that also features the Supersuckers and Lee Rude and the Trainwrecks.

They were playing a slightly longer (15 sec they said) sample the other day on ccc. I was going to post something about this.

The two rules of pearl jam:
1. Christine will buy anything they put out, ever, no matter what it is.
2. Freddie will always reply with a farting noise into a pearl jam thread.

Title: New Pearl Jam Album May 2nd, free single download on Wednesday March 8

Pearl Jam announced today that they will release their highly anticipated, self-titled, eighth studio album May 2, 2006 on J Records.

The first single off the album, "World Wide Suicide" is scheduled to be made available to radio March 8, with the official impact date scheduled for March 14. "World Wide Suicide" will also be made available as a free unrestricted download on the band\'s website for two days beginning 6:00am EST on March 8. The single will then be available for purchase digitally as of March 14.

"It\'s a very special opportunity for us to work with a band that possesses such an historic legacy," comments J Records founder Clive Davis.

The album was produced and mixed by Adam Kasper and Pearl Jam at Studio X in Seattle, Washington. Kasper co-produced Pearl Jam\'s 2002 release, Riot Act.

I think that Breakfast has that effect on you.  The same thing happened to me as you know.  I was really into Pearl Jam before Breakfast came along, it didn\'t help that they went into a Phish-esque hiatus.  Yes Riot Act did not impress me all that much either.  I have to say that Vitalogy is probably my favorite album though Binaural is a very close second.  I\'m interested to hear some new stuff.  Hopefully being "happy" doesn\'t affect the music making ability...

you know, the more i analyze the tour, the more i think it sucks. i mean, sure i\'ll be happy to see them and all, but this tour is just retarded. forget the $60-$65 tickets for a second.. there\'s gaps for no reason, making touring/travel/lodging absolutely pointless - Saturday > Tuesday > Friday?! what is that?

they\'re doing an arena tour in may/june, yet there\'s two random ampitheatre shows. the one 2-night run, toronto (which i would LOVE to do), is an ever-convenient Tuesday>Wednesday run. great. there\'s a day off between 2 shows at the same venue. wtf?

enough bitching i guess.. carry on..

You can argue if it\'s just a little late, but most of the time your screwed in that situation. I\'m just lucky my wife is a hell of a lot more organized than I am and she kept hers going.

Pearl Jam Scores Highest Modern Rock Debut Ever
March 13, 2006
By Anthony Colombo

Pearl Jam returns from a hiatus of more than three years, the longest of its career, with its highest ever modern rock debut as "World Wide Suicide" (RMG) lands at No. 3 on the Billboard Radio Monitor modern rock chart. The track, which also ranks No. 1 on the format\'s audience chart, landed 68 Airplay Adds (six or more spins in a week on a station for the first time) out of the format\'s 75 reporters.

"World" marks the quintet\'s 31st modern rock chart appearance which is second all-time at the format to U2\'s 33 tracks. It\'s also the fifth song to debut within the top 3 in the chart\'s 17-year history and the highest since Linkin Park\'s "Somewhere I Belong" debuted at No. 2 in March 2003.

"World" also debuts at No. 4 at heritage rock, the format\'s highest debut since June 2004, and comes in at No. 11 at active rock.

Talk about spectacular introductions.  This show: 1992-12-31: the academy, was my first PJ concert, and probably my 2nd concert ever.  There\'s only been a few that have come close to the power that was display that night.

Sure, there were gems like Dirty Frank and Sonic Reducer, and a Daughter that they had only played once before live.  But the Wash that opens this show knocked everyone on their asses.  I\'ve never heard them perform it this way again (a real shame).

Eddie had been wearing a ski hat for most of the night, that kept falling off.  I believe during Porch, he grabbed a roll of duct tape off the drum risers and taped the hat to his head w/ like 18 feet of tape.  I guess he really wanted that hat on.

I\'ve been clutching a horrible tape... worst sound quality imaginable of this show for the last 5 years.

I can\'t tell you how excited I am to get this... the new album will be listened to after I get through the academy show.

RESERVE TICKETS FOR POTENTIAL ADDED SHOWS!
03.20.06
The Ten Club would like to offer eligible members the opportunity to reserve pre-sale tickets for potential Pearl Jam shows, which could be added to the US Tour. You must be an active member as of March 7, 2006 to be eligible for this opportunity.

Here\'s how it will work ... the shows listed below have the potential to be added to the tour. We are going to allow you to reserve these tickets before they go on-sale to the public. You will "purchase" these reservations from pearljam.com like a regular ticket sale, however we will not charge your card until the show has been confirmed.

What this does is place your order on hold for approximately one week, until the additional show has been confirmed. At that time, we will charge your card. If the additional show does not happen, your order will be canceled and your credit card info will be removed from our system.

Ticket reservations for additional shows will act like any other Ten Club pre-sale ticket, so all the standard policies and procedures do apply. Ticket reservations are available while supplies last. Two tickets only per member. All ticket sales are final. No refunds. No exchanges. No transfers. No excuses. Click here for more ticket information.

Ticket pre-sale reservations for all additional shows will begin March 21st at 10am PST. Pre-sale reservations will remain open until March 22nd at 5pm PST or until the reservations are full. We anticipate reservations to fill quickly, so be ready for anything!

Listed below are show dates that could potentially be added to the tour:

[table=head]DATE|CITY|VENUE|PRE-SALE DATE
May-25*|Boston, MA|TD Banknorth Garden|Mar-21 at 10am PST
May-28|Philadelphia, PA|Tweeter Center at the Waterfront|Mar-21 at 10am PST
May-31*|E.Rutherford, NJ|Continental Airlines Arena|Mar-21 at 10am PST[/table]

*dates are subject to change due to professional sports team playoff schedules

Question about the Dodge seating.  If you\'re onstage looking out @ the audience, you\'ve got section 100 to your left and 300 to your right and 200 in the center.

How are the individual seats numbered?  Left to right, per section?

not me..

i have to say though - i listened to the new album on the way home from work on wednesday, and well, i hope it grows on me. and don\'t get me wrong, i\'m SURE it will, since WWS is already growing on me from the first time i heard it... but that\'s what i\'m left with after one listen. the thing that bugs me is that it wasn\'t like that (for me) with riot act. i loved riot act after my first listen..

sooo... that\'s that..

I guess GQ has an article on PJ and this was posted on TOOBOARD.
Found it amusing. Some def. work others not so much.

Ten Reasons Pearl Jam is the New Grateful Dead

1. They sell out arenas in two minutes and you cant name any of their last five albums.

2. Their voluminous collection of live recordings, allowing fans to bicker over which version of "Brain of J" was better- Ljubljana 6/19/00 or Sacramento 10/30/00.

3. Sounds great in a Volvo S60.

4. Odd NBA connections. Dead had Bill Walton as a superfan; PJ briefly called themselves Mookie Blaylock and named their ffirst album Ten, after Blaylock\'s number.

5. Love to cover Bob Dylan.

6. Played with Neil Young.

7. Quirky side projects- Jerry Garcia had New Riders of the Purple Sage, and Bob Weir had Ratdog, PJ\'s Mike McCready has the Rockfords, Stone Gossard has Brad, and Jeff Ament has Three Fish.

8. A lot better than Phish.

9. Generally bad hair.

10. Two words: shorts onstage.

yea. we saw from present tense onward. I missed it, but apparently someone printed out a few thousand \'LEASH\' signs and everyone had them a\'la the breath signs at msg in 96.

So anyway the story goes that eddie took one of the leash signs from a fan and wrote on it and then held it back up, altered to now read something like "We will never play \'LEASH\' "

My mini Sullivan review:

The opening 3 songs (suicide, comatose & severed hand) stand up against anything else PJ has done; demonstrated nicely by the fact that McCready spent more time in the air than on the ground during them. Marker in the Sand, may be my favorite track off PJ & sounded great live.  The slower numbers that followed (gone & unemployable... i think) translate so much better during live performance than they do on the album... a fact thats gotten me more psyched about the coming shows.  The older numbers that closed the performance brought back those goose bumps that have been absent since the last breakfast show.

Porch is such a standard that it\'s probably easy for them to go into cruise-control, however they added some nice touches (the solo intro [how new is that?], a nod to the sullivan theater w/ a vocal beatles tease, and mikes behind the head guitar solo).

What I got from the "Leash" sign thing was: the dorks from the fan club had their million sign attempt, the band... somehow found out about it and there was an attempt to get Letterman to announce during his show that Leash would not be played, the sign that Eddie held up was the cue card that was to be used during the Dave show.

so we have been here in new york for a few days
i have been lying pretty low
just tooling around a little bit
i went to see pearl jam last night
and they were great
it makes me so happy to see our contemporaries
after several years have rolled by
rocking better than ever
they continue to write good songs
they hit it hard and raw
and the sound of eddie vedder\'s voice fills me up with hope

after the other morning when i found out our record had leaked
i freaked
it leaked i freaked
after calming down a little bit
and finding out more about what actually happens
it has been bought to my attention by some intelligent people
that most of the people who down load the record before it comes out
are people who really love our music and believe in what we do
and they go out and get the real thing anyway
but of course they can not wait to hear it
and are willing to hear a substandard version first
because they are excited to hear it
and of course i understand and i would do the same thing
it just really scared me that people would be hearing something
without the depth of sound that we strive for

well we are playing saturday night live tonight
i am excited about it
and i dedicate our performance to john belushi
the great performer
and cultural treasure
produced by the united states
who made so many people happy
in front of their televisions

MY PERSONAL NOTES:
-First off, I have been a fan since i received Nevermind and Ten for Christmas in 1991, but, I must confess, this is my first Pearl Jam show. So I cannot compare this with previous shows like many of you. On one hand that is a good thing because I went into this show expecting the regular type of performance. The downside is that now I will base every show I go to from now against this one and undoubtedly they will not even come close. Many people say after a show that it was "the best show they\'ve ever seen", then days, months, and years pass and they same the same thing about another show. Well, I cannot do that. There is no match for what I experienced on this night. There is no concert to compare this to. Do i regret not seeing Pearl Jam over the past 15 years? Not one bit. I think of it as the past 15 years I have been a fan culminating into one final hurrah that I can remember for the rest of my time here.

Thank you, Pearl Jam,

Dave

funny that 2 of paul\'s highlights are 2 of my gripes.. first, i thought tonight paled in comparison to last night. a lot of different songs, which was good, but a very mellow show overall, i thought.

i\'m open = possibly the most meh pearl jam song ever. first time played live? great. whatever.

the new garden BLOWS!!! way to take a good song and ruin it. i hate it.

my highlight = rearviewmirror.

the show wasn\'t bad, but it would probably rank close to the bottom out of all the PJ shows i\'ve seen..

Friday was a great show....satin\'s bed????  SICK!  Hopefully you 10c members had great seats, I was right next to the soundboard in the back so I couldn\'t really see anything that good.  The porch was good also.  The jam at the end of alive got pretty intense.  no guitar jam in crazy mary???

I thought Hartford was better (in some ways) because the crowd seemed more into it than Albany (around me at least).  Was up on the lawn last night and thank god it didn\'t rain, but there was quite a mud fight which always ruins a good time for most except the 4 drunk college assholes who think it\'s funny to throw mud at people.  Dave, definetly like the old garden better, but it\'s not that bad.  why go was great both nights.....o ya...RATS!!!!

The sun is the only thing that could have made last nights show better (for me).  I loved the song selection and energy.  Scalped my way off the lawn as insurance against the rain, but split time between inside and out.  Sound was better inside, but the view from the screens outside was worth the walk (plus I\'m not a big fan of people, and Mike side outside was nice and wide open).

Highlights:  Hail Hail, Inside Job, Rearview

I was in the pisser for I\'m Open, I\'m gonna side with Peck and claim that the song sucks and that I\'m glad I was out of ear shot for it.

Lowpoints... not many.  Well, because I\'m an old man, I\'m gonna say that I didn\'t need the two closers.

I\'m going to somewhat agree with dave. I\'m open was cool just because I never thought I\'d hear it live. It would have been better if someone was singing the "I\'m open" part and eddie did the spoken word poetry. The song without the poem on top is pretty borring. It got props simply because it was so darm obscure. Garden was cool at the begining with all those heavy chords. I had no idea what song it was for a while. Also, I never heard it live. Once I hear the rest of the tour I might think it sucks in compairison, but for now, that was cool to hear. I would have loved an immortality but I\'ll settle for slight of hand any day. The lyrics in that song give me shivers when I think about them. Not many bands can do that.

I hope we get to hear big wave sometime this tour. Does anyone else think this sounds like an old police song at the end or is it just me?  Christine is still waiting on parachutes. Inside job was worth it just because mike was playing the double neck 18 string SG a-la\' Jimmy Page or Alex Lifeson. That song kicks your ass!

pitchy - what\'d ya think?

Overall, a great concert as one of my favorite bands performed with the ferocity I expect. I got a little slopped up as I realized I was standing on the edge of a mud battle royale during Even Flow. But we relocated and kept the mucking to a minimum.

Pearl Jam played several songs I wanted to hear. From the new album, I was glad to get Severed Hand, Life Wasted, Worldwide Suicide, Inside Job, and especially, Comatose.

Old school-wise, Dissident, Rearviewmirror, Hail Hail, Go, Why Go, I Got Shit/Id, and even Garden were my favorites, the latter two mostly because I had never seen them prior to this, my sixth show.

But I do have a few complaints, not the least of which was the four-song first encore, which is hardly par for Pearl Jam’s course.

And speaking of which, the crowd was too tame between encores and I felt the band wasn\'t even really cheered back on stage. Although that\'s likely the result of knowing you\'re gonna get an encore and realizing that a full effort isn\'t required, I still had higher expectations. I figured the crowd would be going bonkers at the band\'s first CT show in nearly eight years, and for the most part, I felt they were timid and lame, more drunk than actually interested in the band.

Musically, I can’t fault anything. I mostly focused on McCready and Cameron and was thoroughly impressed.

But one person with whom I was not impressed was Ed. He didn’t forget lyrics and I could see the emotions in his face as he sang, but he was also highly wasted and had one of his worst-ever nights for banter, which does count for me as far as connecting the band with fans. Ed’s speeches were often incoherent and his decision to lay out his highly generalized and vague political ramblings sure came at and odd time before the final verse of RITFW. If you want discuss potential solutions to real problems between songs, let\'s do it. But to just say, "We have to keep American free," is weak. I mean, how Ed, how? Tell us how we can keep America free while 25,000 lunatics are waiting for you to get to the chorus.

Sure I’m a spoiled Pearl Jam fan. I have exceedingly high expectations for their performances and I\'m let down when they\'re not met. It\'s one thing if they play a setlist that I\'m not into. But that wasn\'t the case Saturday, which makes the show\'s average result all the more befuddling, and ultimately, disappointing.

awesome show last night! SO much better than the hartford show, though i\'m not sure if i can put it up past the albany show. ed recalled at one point the \'play every song\' theme of the 3 tweeter shows in 2003, and said that they were gonna try to cram as much as they could into these 2 nights in boston..

got to see a bunch of songs i haven\'t seen yet this tour, including 2 Riot Act songs (which have been scarce this tour). i was kind of upset to hear that the new LBC vocal arrangement (as played in \'05) is apparently here to stay. i really like the original better (referring to the \'constant recoil...\' section). same goes for the \'05 vocal arrangement of Crazy Mary (the \'one night, the thunder cracked...\' section), but i digress..

the jam at the end of Betterman was really good, but i\'m really hoping i get to see a \'Save It For Later\' this tour.. thought it was coming last night, but it didn\'t happen. was psyched to hear Sad again. Wishlist had no outro; just ended after the lyrics \'and never let you down\'. Down =:thumbsup:. weird placement for Life Wasted i thought, but whatever. also feels weird to have seen Why Go at all 3 shows i\'ve seen so far this tour, but they\'re playing the balls out of it, so it\'s not all that surprising.

first encore was almost too mellow, but still good. Forever Young and Masters Of War were played for Dylan\'s 65th birthday. first MoW of the tour.. once again, no guitar solo to close out Crazy Mary, just organ. the green lasers were back out for Inside Job, which i find very fitting, because the song sounds like it could be on Pink Floyd\'s Animals.

encore 2 was awesome! completely rocking. Whipping was my highlight of the night, even though ed messed up the lyrics.. i\'ve just been dying to hear it.. good to see Rats back in rotation, though it somewhat takes away from the albany bust-out. we made our way out during RITFW, since i knew it\'d be the last song, and that\'s when the night started to take a turn for the worse.

ok, first off, it\'s fucking $23 to park in the garage underneath the garden! $23!!!! but whatever, i\'m over it. we got there plenty early and got a *sweet* pull-out spot right near an exit. we were out of the garage really quick, and officially on the road at 11:30. 93S, check. 90W, check. toll, toll, check, check. cruising. and then, BAM - parking lot. 4 lanes of cars as far as the eye could see, moving 0-3 mph. then i see the sign:

ROAD WORK AHEAD... LEFT 3 LANES CLOSED. USE BREAKDOWN LANE.

brilliant! what, with yankees/red sox AND pearl jam going on in boston and all.. UGH!!! what a mess.. sat in that garbage for well over an hour. what\'s worse is that it started about a mile AFTER the exit for 95. so it could have been avoided completely, had there been ANY warning. UGH!!! ended up taking 3 hours to get home, and i ended up with an hour and 45 minutes of sleep before waking up and driving an hour to work.

...and i get to do it all again tonight! i will, of course, be taking 95 home tonight. but seriously - fuck boston. in fact, fuck the entire state of massachusetts. fuck $23 parking, fuck road work, fuck tolls, and fuck the red sox while we\'re at it. ;) what a miserable, miserable place.

while driving through one of those 50 tunnels that forks off into 867 different directions:

me: i mean, who the fuck designed these things?!?
lisa: the fucking red sox.

both my bros are at these two nights in boston. by the looks of the setlist I would have to say last nights show looks better than albany, despite my amazing seats. guess I will have to wait til I talk to my brothers.

As I told dave earlier, if the previous 2 tours have been any hint, the second concert (or 3rd) is always the best of the run. I can\'t believe he got rats twice! Bastard!

Watch, tonight he\'ll get a Mankind>W.M.A.>Leash. I\'m calling it now.

Chris - no extras, but unless we carpool with someone, your welcome to jump in the car with us and try your best for tickets. We\'ll probably be leaving at 12:30p sharp when I get out of work. We are going to the saturday show. Usually if you get in line at the box office you can upgrade your tickets (you have to wait all day), but even if you don\'t and someone in front of you does upgrade, they\'ll be looking to sell their tickets. Not a guarentee though.

we ran into pat before the show last night. it was actually the first night (ed/the picture).. he said they were hanging out at a bar down the street with him/them..

we thought indifference was the last song and left towards the end. we missed leash.

 no we didn\'t!!!! fuck.yes!!! ahahahahahahaha!!!

oh, and i thought it sounded better than some of the recordings that i\'ve heard it on from back in the day. i was really well done. i just don\'t know if i wanna see it back in rotation, since it will take away from this a little (not a lot though - this is pretty tough to beat!), as their current playing of Satan\'s Bed sort of takes away from the albany bust out..

Quote from: 2006-06-01 - Continental Arena; East Rutherford, NJ
Pre-set: You\'ve Got To Hide Your Love Away, It Makes No Difference (Ed w/ MMJ)

Set: Severed Hand, Corduroy, World Wide Suicide, Do The Evolution, Marker In The Sand, Given To Fly, Dissident, Even Flow, Army Reserve, Immortality, Green Disease > Not For You/(Modern Girl), Alone (stopped when Eddie\'s mic cut out, then restarted halfway through), Jeremy, Why Go, Life Wasted, Rearviewmirror

Encore 1: Wasted Reprise, Man Of The Hour, Come Back, Footsteps, Once, Alive

Encore 2: Last Exit, Comatose, Leatherman, Glorified G, Leash, Baba O\'Riley, Indifference

wow. a show that started off fairly standard for me ended up taking a sharp right turn at Immortality, and edges out Camden 2 as my favorite of the 6 shows i\'ve seen on this tour.

first of all, our seats were fantastic. my 2nd best of the tour, behind boston 2. stone side floor, 2nd row of the 2nd section (26th row total). so we only had one row of people in front of us, and then an asile before the next section. great view. before PJ went on, a massive entourage was walking through the asile in front of us with the Fuel guy from American Idol. i then watched everyone pick up their cell phone to call their closest American Idol fan to tell them who they\'d just seen. what a great time.

i knew the Severed Hand opener was coming when the intro music had faded out and the band still wasn\'t out on stage yet. i like SH a lot in the opening slot. standard Corduroy and WWS.. Do The Evolution is played at every show, but i like it *much* better at the beginning of the set than in the 2nd encore. Given To Fly and Dissident were ok, and Even Flow was one of the better ones i\'ve seen on this tour, but after these 3 songs, i was really feeling \'blah\' about this show.. Army Reserve didn\'t make me feel any better about it - not a bad song, but one of my least favorite on the new album..

then the turn - i was *thrilled* when i heard the opening notes to Immortality. my favorite song off Vitalogy, my first of the tour, and only my 3rd in 19 shows. definitely picked my spirits up, but that was only the beginning. Green Disease is always good to hear, but the segue into Not For You (my first in 11 shows) at the end came out of nowhere! great to hear it, and it was also the first time i\'ve heard the Modern Girl tag at the end.

i was floored when Alone started.. my first one.. apparently it was stopped due to a technical problem, but it definitely looked and sounded like it was botched. the guys had fun with it though, providing some nice \'sorry!\' sounds while it was happening. then they picked up where they left off, and all was well. the rest of the set was very strong.. Rearviewmirror is my favorite first set closer, and i was in VERY high spirits after the set..

the mellow Encore 1\'s are usually pretty \'meh\' for me, but this is the best one i can remember. Wasted Reprise i can take or leave, and Man Of The Hour was tedious (my 3rd show in a row seeing it, and i\'m really not a big fan of the song), but after that - oh boy! i fucking love Come Back, and this was the first time i\'d seen it since the first show i caught this tour (albany).:thumbsup: then the reverse mamasan to close the 1st encore - awesome. especially Once and Footsteps, obviously..

Leatherman and Leash were the highlights of the 2nd Encore. only my 2nd Leatherman ever. Ed was commenting on Busleaguer and Leash before they played Leash, and i *think* he was confusing Continental with Nassau - talking about the last time they played there, and the reaction to Bushleaguer, and the \'PLAY LEASH YOU PUSSIES\' sign.. anyways, a little too similar to the Camden 2 Encore 2, but i really enjoyed hearing Glorified G again. also great to see that they closed with something other than Yellow Ledbetter.

like i said, this edges out Camden 2 as my favorite of the 6 shows i\'ve seen on this leg. can\'t believe that\'s it until vegas, and then that\'s it until who knows when. great run, great band.

Although details are scant at deadline, Pearl Jam has recorded a cover of the Who\'s "Love, Reign O\'er Me" for the upcoming Adam Sandler/Don Cheadle film "Reign Over Me."  A snippet of the recording can be heard in the trailer for the film, which opens March 9 in U.S. theaters. It is unknown if the song will appear on a soundtrack release.

Pearl Jam\'s most recent foray into soundtracks was "Man of the Hour," which ran over the end credits of the 2003 Tim Burton film "Big Fish."

Reign Over Me.....Written and Directed by Mike Binder....

A man (Sandler) who lost his family in the September 11 attack on New York City runs into his old college roommate (Cheadle). Rekindling the friendship is the one thing that appears able to help the man recover from his grief.

sounds like a pretty good movie......I love Adam Sandler expecially in his more serious dramatic roles (Punch Drunk Love.....Spanglish).....Don Cheadle is quite the ser actor himself.....

Eddie Vedder’s love for Sean Penn films has become a full-on crush. The Pearl Jam frontman will release an entire album of solo compositions for Into the Wild, a new film directed by Penn. Vedder has previously performed songs for Penn vehicles Dead Man Walking (”Long Road”) and I Am Sam (The Beatles’ “You’ve Got to Hide Your Love Away”). He’ll also have a small role in the film, Vedder’s first since playing the drummer of Matt Dillon’s band, Citizen Dick, in Cameron Crowe’s 1992 film Singles.

Yeah, that new DVD is good stuff!

I loved the extra w/ My Morning Jacket.

My only complaint... and take this with a grain of salt...  They\'ve got all that great concert footage which is parsed with side segments of the individual band members doing their "off stage" thing.  Very fun to see.  But where was Stone Gossards "off stage thing"?  When I got into PJ, it was Stone & Jeff\'s band.  Eddie became the dominate force (for obvious reasons).  But Stone was the reason I picked up a guitar and to this day I\'ll take a badass guitar riff over a solo (no matter how nasty).  That useless fuckin\' keyboard player got a segment!

But I digress... awesome DVD, well worth the purchase price, an makes up for the yawner soundtrack.  I bet those songs are gonna sound good in the movie.  Which, I read a segment of that book when it was published in Outdoor magazine.  Amazing story.  I can\'t wait to see the movie (although, I\'ll definitely wait for it to come out on DBD).

ADDITIONAL SHOWS?03.27.08

There is talk of additional shows being added to the 2008 tour schedule and the Ten Club has tickets!

You must be an active Ten Club member as of March 21, 2008 to qualify for the ticket reservation opportunity.

Here\'s how it will work ... Beginning April 1, 2008 there will be a ticket "reservation" at pearljam.com for shows which could possibly be added to the tour schedule. A ticket reservation means you purchase tickets like any other show, however the credit card will not be charged until the show is confirmed.

Things you must know ... The credit card will be authorized for the amount of the tickets, so funds must be available. An authorization on the credit card puts a hold on the funds for a pre-determined amount of time - usually 7-10 business days. The credit card will not be charged until the show is confirmed, which is likely to happen AFTER the public on-sale.

Sometimes funds are released before the card is charged, but don\'t panic, we have the authority to charge your account within a time frame from the date the order is placed. Therefore, even if funds are released back to your account and the show is confirmed, we can still charge your credit card for the tickets.

Once the show is confirmed, we will charge your card and send you a confirmation for the ticket purchase. If the show is not confirmed, your funds will be released back to your account within a time frame determined by the card-issuing bank.

Whew ... long story short, if you are interested in tickets for the possible shows, you will purchase tickets like any other show and your card will be charged when the show is confirmed.

All standard Ten Club policies apply to the additional shows. Ticket reservations are available while supplies last. Two tickets per member/per show. All sales final.

Ticket reservations will close April 1st at 5pm PDT.

RESERVATIONS FOR POSSIBLE SHOWS:

DATE CITY/ST VENUE PRE-SALE DATE/TIME
JUN 20 Camden, NJ Susquehanna Apr-01 at 9am PDT
JUN 28 Mansfield, MA Tweeter Amp. Apr-01 at 11am PDT

REMEMBER ... these shows are NOT confirmed yet, so you are reserving these tickets at your own risk. Complaints are useless if the show is not confirmed.

Additional questions can be directed to tickets@tenclub.net or please call 1-800-724-8038.

i figured as much, considering the schedule of current shows is pretty retarded (starting in camden, they play THU, SUN, TUE, WED, FRI, MON). i was guessing they\'d bookend the MSG shows though, and add 1-2 to Mansfield. i guess i\'m psyched for more shows, but i really really hate what they\'re charging for tickets ($74 each; $84 for MSG). hmmm...

exactly what i was thinking. from the price of tix, i\'m really only planning on hartford then the first boston show if it\'s official. I hate missing another local show (boston 2) but at 75 bucks a pop, i just can\'t afford it

you need to wait and keep going back in all morning and you\'ll see the better seats open up. Also, with pearl jam I have been very sucessfull in the past getting to the venue at like 10am and standing in line for extra ticket releases which are usually good front sections. If not, you buy the seats someone else in line has. If they have middle section and score front, you buy their middle since it\'s still better than your lawn. I\'ve probably done this for at least a dozen pj shows.

that\'s a good move, I\'m going with a bunch of people so will probably just hang in the lawn for this show, maybe i\'ll try that for the second boston show if it becomes offical

ticketmaster just got blocked at work, can somebody please check to see if the Sat. June 28th show went on sale today??? I just heard it did and I can\'t get tickets

ok, just almost had a heart attack, I got tix for sat. but once again, they are shitty

Pearl Jam Reteams With Brendan O\'Brien For New Album

Pearl Jam has started recording its ninth studio album with producer Brendan O\'Brien, guitarist Mike McCready told Seattle radio station KISW yesterday (May 1). Though only "four or five" songs are being worked on so far, McCready said the band is hoping to release the record in 2008.

The new effort, a follow-up to its self-titled 2006 album, finds Pearl Jam reteaming with longtime producer Brendan O\'Brien (Bruce Springsteen, Rage Against the Machine) for the first time since 1998\'s "Yield." O\'Brien has also produced Pearl Jam\'s "Vs." (1993), "Vitalogy" (1994) and "No Code."

The two parties first reunited last year to record a cover of the Who\'s "Love Reign O\'er Me" for the soundtrack to the Adam Sandler film "Reign Over Me."

"Brendan works really fast," Pearl Jam bassist Jeff Ament told Billboard.com in March. "He\'s a super pro. I\'ve always felt, working with him, that he understood me as a bass player and that\'s not always easy. A lot of producers are there to please the singer. But I\'ve always had a great rapport with him. I can tell him I want something to sound like the O\'Jays or Led Zeppelin or PJ Harvey and he gets it."

"We\'ve always been friends," O\'Brien told Billboard.com last fall. "They were great to me when we were making records together [before], and we still remained very good friends ... I still think they\'re a great band. Eddie [Vedder] has one of the best, if not the best, voices out there. When he sings, people believe them."

As previously reported, Pearl Jam is about to embark on a 13-date East Coast tour that runs from June 11-30.

In an effort to support Portland, Ore., U.S. Senate candidate Steve Novick, the band has set aside special tickets to its sold-out shows in New York, Camden, N.J., and Washington, D.C., that include donations to Novick\'s campaign. Novick donation tickets to the Washington, D.C., show include access to a meet-and-greet with guitarist Stone Gossard.

Last month, Gossard was among a group of musicians that also included R.E.M.\'s Michael Stipe, the Decemberists\' Colin Meloy, Sleater-Kinney\'s Corin Tucker and Spoon\'s Britt Daniel who released a letter of support for the candidate.

Pearl Jam\'s eponymous 2006 album peaked at No 2 on The Billboard 200 and lead single "World Wide Suicide" reached No. 1 on the Modern Rock chart.

This sounds like a great show.  That being said, I feel that The Who should go off into the sunset and let us remember the way they were.  I\'m not even going to comment on the last tour, but to bill themselves (Daltry and Townshend) as The Who doesn\'t give Moon and The Ox any credit.  If you want to tour and play Who tunes then tour as Dalty/Townshend or Townshend/Daltry (which is essentially what these tours amount to).

my 21st pearl jam show.

instant classic.

easily top 3. quite possibly best.

miserable traffic most of the way down. miserable line to wait for $15 parking. miserable line for 10c tickets well after the 7:30 time on the ticket.

and we were rewarded greatly.

i knew as soon as they opened with HTI (my first!) that it was going to be a special night. well, that\'s certainly an understatement. don\'t know if they\'ve ditched the recorded intro to SH, but they did for this show. LOVE the early DTE. i liked All Night on first listen, but will definitely have to hear it more (sure i will over the next 6 shows). IN HIDING! WHO YOU ARE!! Light Years dedicated to Tim Russert actually brought a tear to my eye. the rest of the set from there on is just "wow", especially the last 3 - U, RATS!, and Why Go. incredible set.

loved that they opened E1 with LROM - my first time hearing it. Better Man was certainly made better with the SIFL tag at the end, though it was just the "don\'t run away" (x infinity) and "don\'t let me down" parts, still very cool. SOLAT?!?! this show just keeps getting better! Black was Black, but then to close E1 with LEASH (the first of the tour)!!! WOW.

E2 was also fantastic, and not really standard. No More was Ed solo. i love it, and i\'ve only seen it at the Ed solo show in April. wasn\'t expecting a CM at this point, but it was awesome. only the 2nd of the tour, and jammed out heavily with some ser trade-offs between mike and boom at the end. it had a climax that might make you think it was the last song of the night, but low and behold, they go into PORCH afterwards!! this placement was fantastic, and obviously made for a HUGE surprise. during it, the boys were going well over curfew, and the house lights came up (and not per Ed\'s request like he sometimes does). they didn\'t seem to give a shit though, and after a rockin\' long Porch, they closed it with YB.

wow.

i think i called Pitchie something like 8 times during the show to report what i was seeing. that\'s the first of 7 on this run for me, and honestly, it\'s gonna be hard to top. but with 2 MSG shows and 2 "great woods" shows still coming up, anything can happen.

this is the greatest band in the universe, and i am psyched.

they (pj) actually have a great system for poster buying this year. you go to the merch stand and buy a bracelet - one bracelet. and with that bracelet, you pick up your poster at the end of the show.

msg managed to take a giant shit on this system. let\'s see:

they were sold out by the time i got there at 6:30.
they were only sold at the booth outside.
you didn\'t need a ticket to the show to get a poster.
they weren\'t even making people put the wristbands on until afterwards when they were picking the posters up! (so people could have bought multiple bracelets)

tuesday night\'s show was fantastic. last night made it seem like i saw a nickleback show at cafe nine on tuesday night.

holy fucking shit.

i\'m still not 100% sold that it was better than camden 1, but i\'m sort of leaning towards "it was". i got my release opener that i\'d been calling for 36 hours, and it was everything i thought it would be. absolutely perfect way to set the mood. 1st WWS of the tour! Cropduster?!?!?!?!? *never* saw that one coming. we were actually out to eat before the show and the restaurant had on the garden dvd. cropduster came on, and we were commenting on how we wouldn\'t be hearing that one tonight. ha!

perfect place to bring back Garden! and it wasn\'t the half-assed 2006 shitfest version of the song, either. it was the real deal, and was terrific to hear. i also love that they played MITS!! mike completely fucked up the beginning and they had to stop and restart it. i was glad they\'d already played corduroy, cause typically that\'s their fallback when they fuck something up. but they got it right and it was great. wishlist i could take or leave, but it was my first of the tour so that was cool. SOLAT!!

i actually enjoyed Even Flow tonight. matt took a pretty damn good drum solo during it. he\'s really starting to open up on this tour. finally. i\'ve always said that matt with PJ isn\'t half as good as he was with Soundgarden. that\'s starting to change. didn\'t think i\'d get another Who You Are, but i\'m not complaining. RATS was amazing, dedicated to the rats at shea stadium and all over the city. GO to close the set was completely unorthodox and amazing. fantastic choice.

Inside Job to open the first encore was a huge surprise. the entire first encore was pretty unbelievable, actually. CJ Ramone was in the house again and played bass on IBIM again. didn\'t mind hearing that 2 nights in a row either. ed started Better Man with "Talking...", and was pretty ashamed about it. stopped the song, restarted, and let the crowd take over. i called RVM to close E1 at that point, and bam, there it was.

i like No More, but i\'m wishing ed would switch it up a little bit. there\'s plenty of other songs to put in this slot, but i guess NM has a message he wants people to hear (and sing), so... i knew Last Kiss was coming when the band set up facing the people in the back. it was good to hear. it\'s been a while. interesting placement for Why Go, but it worked. i don\'t think i could get sick of this one live. good thing, too. they\'re playing the balls out of it.

Ace Frehley came out for Black Diamond, and i didn\'t know what it was. ed took a break, and mike and matt sang it. it was pretty damn good, with ace and mike going back and forth on solos. Alive was quite awesome with the garden completely lit up and singing in unison. i knew YB was coming to close it out, however, i\'d mark it down as E3. the band never left the stage, but they did all leave their stations and instruments before getting into a quick huddle and deciding to play it. the lights stayed on, and it was great. mike played a full Star Spangled Banner at the end, and when it was over, we just stood and watched thankfully as our favorite band, who\'d just played one of the greatest concerts we\'ve ever seen, in the most famous arena in the universe, actually thanked us. surreal.

the poster story: so on tuesday, we took the 3:52 train into the city. didn\'t get a poster. on wednesday, after originally pushing up to 3:30, we decided to take the 2:50. we made our way to MSG at a good pace on foot, eye on the prize the whole time. we got there at 5:00, and entered the poster line, which had hundreds of people in it. you first had to get a wristband to stand in this line. we did. after a little while, they started letting people in, 50 at a time, to buy posters wristbands to pick up a poster after the show. i wasn\'t feeling very good about our place in line, but there was also no way i was leaving the line. each time 50 people went in, we only moved up about 3 baby steps. well, eventually we get to the front, and we get through the first part, and get to now go stand in line at the extremely crowded merch table. we were only in this second line for about 5 minutes. we were about 8 people from the merch table when the crown up there started to disintegrate. my heart sunk. it was 6:05, and wristband posters had sold out.

while i don\'t think they had this system in place yesterday, you *still* did not need a ticket to the show to get a poster. ugh. i\'m hoping i have some better luck in hartford and mansfield, because i now have 3 shows to make up for lack of posters this tour. i really wish i never started collecting these fucking things.

how was I\'m open? is it that same boring version ed premiered last time in hartford? That song is so slow without the poem on top of it.

2008-06-27 - Dodge Music Center; Hartford, CT

I: Can\'t Keep, Breakerfall, Last Exit, Gods\' Dice, All Night, Elderly Woman Behind The Counter In A Small Town, Sad, Brain Of J., Big Wave, In Hiding, Not For You(Modern Girl), Daughter(Another Brick In The Wall), Why Go, Jeremy, Gone, Immortality, Porch

E1: Garden, Better Man, Even Flow, Comatose, Leash, Blood(Atomic Dog)

E2: Smile, Do The Evolution, Alive, Fuckin\' Up, Yellow Ledbetter(Little Wing)

i posted that phish setlist because it\'s the first thing i thought of after the PJ show we saw last night. bust out after bust out after bust out. unbelievable that they could/would put together a setlist like this.

gotta give credit to andy weekapaug, who i spoke to briefly before the show. he said that because of all the pessimism surrounding the show, he thought it was actually gonna be the sleeper show of the tour. i was thinking the exact opposite. the hartford \'06 show is probably the most mediocre PJ show i\'ve ever seen, and this show was smack dab in the middle of 2 two-night runs at 2 legendary PJ venues. i was totally expecting them to just mail it in at this show. and i couldn\'t have been more wrong.

i missed Can\'t Keep and Breakerfall. :(:( not happy about that. we waited in the line for 10c tickets for about an hour. we would have waited longer, but after a long while, an executive decision was made to cut the line, because it had stopped moving completely for about 15 minutes. seriously, you would think they\'d have this shit figured out by now.

we walked in during Last Exit, and as they started God\'s Dice, i already couldn\'t believe what i was hearing. got my first Sad of the tour. my first Big Wave ever (after missing the debut by one show in \'06). first Not For You, Jeremy, Immortality, Blood, Smile, and Fuckin\' Up of the tour for me also. wow. my 5th show of the tour and 12 firsts. that\'s insane.

i also LOVE that Even Flow and Do The Evolution (the 2 songs that they play at *every* show) were left out of the main set. i\'d mentioned to pitchie about how if they ever opened with Even Flow, THAT would be fantastic. well, moving it out of the main set was just as good of an idea.

they\'ve raised the bar. a lot. i love this fucking band.

Last night (Mansfield I) was a B-/B for me. Mind you, they are one of my fav. bands and have seen them numerous times and have bootlegs out the wazoo.

Out comes Ed out pre-opening act (I believe only 2nd time this tour) to wet the crowd. He performs opens "Throw Your Arms Around Me." Dude should start throwing some surprises into those presets. It\'s usually 1 of about 3 or 4 songs. For years.

Highlights and other things of note: 1st Hard to Imagine (opener), Hail Hail (love that song and could hear it 10x in a row), Low light (I like the song better on record. It kind of slows the momentum), Faithful again was OK to hear, I\'d prefer getting the In Hiding and Brain Of J Hartford had the night before if something from Yield. They should just trash I\'m Open..Seriously..  I Got Shit!! (see Hail Hail), State of Love and Trust as Off He Goes was super cool, and Love Reign O\'er Me was pretty explosive. The cheering during the opening of Betterman was the loudest and longest thing I\'ve ever heard in my life for about a minute or two. This crowd usually does this after they help Ed sing the part of the first verse. But, this was unlike anything anyone has ever heard before (Read the thread about it on the PJ forum called the Message Pit) The show ended abruptly after Alive and the show seemed to be a couple of more tunes away from a solid B.. Wash, Satan\'s Bed, Habit, and Rival were all sound checked but were not played.. Monday\'s show should be swell. I just downloaded Hartford.. Hail, hail the lucky ones..

quoted from the kanye thread, posted by myself

\'on a semi - related breakfast note..i had dinner with Eddie Vedder on Friday before his performance. me eddie and my one other friend who is close family friends with him. My friend who introduced me to vedder, his brother is in a band called \'the tangeants\'. they have played the lions den on a night when the breakfast did too, they played that 6 pm slot or something when the breakfast played at 12. so anyway, my friend mentions how his brothers band \'opened\' for one of my (pointing at me) favorite bands. i replied \'yeah, the breakfast, great band, check them out\'. he didnt really react, however, and my friend continued on with his story...did what i could though. eddie later gave me his pick. what a trip, having halibut with EV and then seeing him control thousands and thousands of people jumping simultaneaously. so fucking cool.\'

thought it would be a nice addition to the PJ tour thread. only time i have/had ever seen them was bonnaroo, awesome fucking show. was on the stage for it, check out a picture i took (mary-kate and ashley were right across the stage from me haha)

Pre-Set: Throw Your Arms Around Me

I: Hard To Imagine, Why Go, Hail Hail, Comatose, Low Light, Elderly Woman Behind The Counter In A Small Town, Corduroy, Faithfull, Off He Goes, Given To Fly, Down, I\'m Open, I Got Id, Even Flow, Do The Evolution, Once, Rearviewmirror

E1: Love Reign O\'er Me, Come Back, Insignificance, Black, Better Man(Save it for Later)

E2: No More, State Of Love And Trust, Alive

--

i agree with your rating, pete. i\'d say B.

i couldn\'t have been happier to see TYAAM. honestly, there\'s no other song i\'d rather hear Ed do solo, so i was pretty damn giddy when he came out and played it, and i was rewarded for being in my seat nice and early. i REALLY wanted to hear it at the EV Berkeley show, and i didn\'t, so i was very excited about this:

HTI opener was obvious. (totally going with a Wash opener call for Monday now). LOVE Why Go in the 2-slot. my first Hail, Hail of the tour - awesome. also loved the Comatose placement. love Low Light, but wasn\'t in love with the placement. too soon. couple standards after that, but i always love Faithfull. nice to hear my first Off He Goes of the tour. i\'m sick of Given To Fly. love Down. agree with pete - I\'m Open serves no purpose, and i hate the fact that it even counts as a "song" in the song count. I GOT ID - now we\'re talking! been waiting for this. EF/DTE back to back was a little rough, but loved Once and RVM to close out the set.

i thought Love Reign O\'er Me was going to be something different, cause before it, ed said "we\'re gonna try this one because we have tomorrow off". still love hearing them play it though. i love Come Back, and it was my first of the tour, however, it\'s kinda tough live, and i don\'t really think it belonged where it was. Insignificance was great. i\'m liking Black more now that i\'m hearing it less.

i may have to call this the best Better Man i\'ve ever heard. like pete said, the pause was absolutely insane. lots of cheers, per usual, but the crowd just kept getting louder and louder, and the cheers turned into banging on the seats. ed just sat and watched and was clearly loving it. and to top it off, i got probably the longest Save It For Later tag i\'ve ever heard (full verse and chorus + "don\'t let me down"). oddly enough, probably the highlight of the show for me!

No More is a good song, but enough is enough. always love SOLAT, obviously. could NOT believe they were done after Alive. really? eek. that sort of brought the grade down a bit as well. only 25 songs on the night - the least amount of songs i\'ve seen at a PJ show since, ironically, Hartford \'06.

the soundcheck tells me that great things are going to happen tomorrow. hope i\'m right.

didn\'t know that wash and satin\'s bed were in soundcheck.....i really wish I was doing boston 2 instead of gordan tonight, but anyways, great show. RVM was a highlight for me, as well as a great version of black. Lowlight still sucks...sorry dave. Love the hard to imagine opener, as well as why go very early in the show. I\'d give it a B show, A+ if your only a casual fan.

Man, I still can\'t believe that mansfield I didn\'t get any of the bust outs and such of this tour: no watchtower, Garden, wma, leash, rats, all night. Material they have been sprinkling over sets. Who\'s got my m my extra for the beacon show? :chin:

Ed Solo tix = $75!

So, I listened to a Hartford audience recording and :holyshit: you guys weren\'t joking. They must have still been buzzing from MSG II and the Ace Frehley and Ramone appearance. That may be one of the top Porches of all time. Mike was insane!! It sounded like some other band during that jam. That was not a Pearl Jam jam. In fact, I\'m likely to purchase this boot as well as maybe Bonnaroo and my show. Wow.

Also, how cool is the ten club for making all the ten club tickets random instead of given out by seniority this year? I hope to hell they keep it this. I actually discontinued by membership last year because I had such a high number and didn\'t have a shot in hell at getting a good fan club seat.  I just rejoined today ;)

PEARL JAM ANNOUNCES THE REISSUE OF BAND’S DEBUT ALBUM, TEN
12.10.08

PEARL JAM ANNOUNCES THE REISSUE OF BAND’S DEBUT ALBUM, TEN:
FOUR SPECIAL EDITION PACKAGES IN STORES MARCH 24, 2009
TEN CLUB PRE-SALE OF SUPER DELUXE BOX SET BEGINS NOW

Album extras include:
Remaster of original Ten album + remix by producer Brendan O’Brien •
DVD of previously unreleased 1992 Pearl Jam MTV Unplugged performance with 5.1 surround sound audio remix • LP of the band’s 1992 “Drop in the Park” concert • Replica of Pearl Jam three-song demo cassette with Eddie Vedder’s original vocal dubs • Recreation of Eddie Vedder composition notebook • Never before seen memorabilia • Bonus tracks and more.

Ten, the debut album that sold 12 million copies and introduced the world to Pearl Jam in 1991, will be reissued in four (4) new and expanded editions. Pre-orders of the Super Deluxe Edition begin today, through the Ten Club at PearlJam.com. All four editions will be available for purchase on March 24, 2009. The reissue of Ten serves as the launch of a planned two-year catalogue re-release campaign leading up to the band’s 20th anniversary in 2011.

Each Ten package will include two versions of the album: the remastered version of the original album PLUS an accompanying remixed version done by the band’s long-time producer, Brendan O’Brien (Bruce Springsteen, AC/DC, Audioslave). Details on specific extras for each of the four packages are listed below.

“The band loved the original mix of Ten, but were also interested in what it would sound like if I were to deconstruct and remix it,” says producer Brendan O’Brien. “The original Ten sound is what millions of people bought, dug and loved, so I was initially hesitant to mess around with that. After years of persistent nudging from the band, I was able to wrap my head around the idea of offering it as a companion piece to the original – giving a fresh take on it, a more direct sound.”

TEN RE-DESIGN
Pearl Jam bassist Jeff Ament, who served as the art director for the original Ten packaging, reprised his role for the reissues collaborating with designer, Andy Fischer, of Cameron Crowe’s Vinyl Films (Into the Wild soundtrack LP, Vanilla Sky soundtrack LP, Harold and Maude anniversary edition soundtrack LP).

"The goal was to assemble the ultimate fan-piece,” explains Fischer. “Something Pearl Jam lovers could pore over as they experience an indelible record all over again, in an entirely new way."

“The original concept was about really being together as a group and entering into the world of music as a true band...a sort of all-for-one deal,” says Jeff Ament. “There were some elements of the original Ten artwork that didn\'t turn out the way we had hoped, due to time constraints. With this reissue, we’ve been able to take our time and invest resources into making the design the way we had originally intended.”

REPLICA OF PEARL JAM 3-SONG DEMO CASSETTE IN SUPER DELUXE EDITION
In the process of digging through his archives for this project, Ament came across an old cassette marked “Momma-Son” – the fabled original Pearl Jam demo tape featuring the first recorded versions of “Alive,” “Once” and “Footsteps.” Ament and guitarists Stone Gossard and Mike McCready had recorded instrumental tracks of these songs to help solicit a singer for their newly formed band. Mutual friend - and then Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer - Jack Irons suggested they send the tape down to San Diego surfer and little-known singer Eddie Vedder.

Completely inspired by what he heard from these musicians that he then only knew by name, Vedder quickly wrote lyrics, put these vocals to the music tracks and shipped the tape back to Seattle. Upon hearing how Vedder had transformed the songs, Ament, Gossard and McCready asked him to come up to Seattle so they could meet and have an official “tryout” together. Shortly thereafter, Pearl Jam was born. (A replica of the “Momma-Son” cassette will be included in the Super Deluxe Edition of Ten.)

Jeff Ament describes the experience of re-visiting that tape with singer Eddie Vedder:
“I think the first time that Ed or I had opened any of those boxes was a few weeks ago. I knew that the original ‘Momma-Son’ cassette was somewhere, but I hadn’t listened to it in 17, 18, 19 years. It was cool to sit down and play it for the first time with Ed and see his reaction. And to find that 90% of it stayed exactly the same as what ended up on the record. A lot of elements were identical. There was some energy flying around at that point even from 1,300 miles away from Seattle to San Diego.”

Pearl Jam Album, Film, Tour In The Works

Pearl Jam will play live dates in the U.S. later this year, including the Outside Lands Festival in San Francisco Aug. 28-30, Billboard has confirmed. The band has also completed 14 songs for a new album and is working on a film with director Cameron Crowe, guitarist Mike McCready said in a radio interview late last month.

McCready told Seattle\'s "Ron & Don Show" that the band is about halfway finished with its next album, which is being recorded in California with producer Brendan O\'Brien. McCready said the band is expecting to have the album out before the end of this year. As previously reported, the band will self-release the album, its ninth.

As for touring, the band is doing a "little thing in the States," and is looking to play South America in 2010, McCready said.

Pearl Jam is widely expected to be one of the headliners of this year\'s Austin City Limits Music Festival in Austin, Texas. The promoters, C3 Presents, declined to comment to Billboard about the lineup, but the Austin Chronicle is calling it "the worst-kept secret since Metallica’s SXSW showcase." Dave Matthews Band, Beastie Boys and Kings of Leon are also expected to be announced as headliners on April 28. Early bird passes for Austin City Limits are on sale at aclfestival.com.

Pearl Jam is also planning to tape an appearance on the Austin City Limits television show, producer Terry Lickona told a pbs.org questioner in March.

Pearl Jam have long been courted by C3 Presents for the Austin festival, especially after the promoters convinced the band to play Lollapalooza in 2007, its first large festival show in the U.S. since the mid-1990s. Pearl Jam played Bonnaroo in 2008.

"We\'re building up to our big 20th anniversary," McCready said. "We\'re trying to have a little campaign of building rereleases with new mixes and new outtakes up until that time. We\'re trying to do a movie with Cameron Crowe with all of our existing footage."

Pearl Jam bassist attacked outside Southern Tracks

DeKalb County Police confirmed Wednesday that Pearl Jam bassist Jeff Ament was assaulted and robbed recently in the parking lot of a Clairmont Road recording studio.

A police report was not made available Wednesday night, but Rolling Stone magazine reported the incident occurred April 27 outside Southern Tracks, where the Seattle-based band is completing its ninth studio album.

According to the magazine, Ament and another man were jumped by three assailants waiting in the woods.

Wearing black masks and brandishing knives, the attackers smashed the windows of a rented Jeep and demanded money. Ament was robbed of $3,000, his passport and $4,320 worth of goods, the report said.

The bassist attempted to run away but was knocked to the ground, sustaining a cut on the head that did not require hospitalization. The robbers drove off in a black Nissan Maxima.

A surveillance camera captured the assault but no arrests have been made.

Southern Tracks is the home base of famed producer Brendan O’Brien, who is collaborating with Pearl Jam for a second time. Several major artists have recorded with O’Brien in his Atlanta studio, including Bruce Springsteen (2002’s “The Rising” and 2007’s “Magic”).

I need to give it a couple more listens.  Felt it was OK... but I may just need to find the soul of the song.

These are not adjectives often used to describe Pearl Jam, the 30 million-selling purveyor of angst-ridden guitar rock now approaching its 19th year of existence. And yet these are the words being used on blogs to describe "The Fixer," the first song from the Seattle rock band\'s ninth album, "Backspacer." A surging, \'80s-style rocker written by drummer Matt Cameron, "The Fixer" debuts this week at No. 2 on Billboard\'s Rock Songs chart, an audience-based tally of all rock stations.

You can\'t blame Cameron, singer Eddie Vedder, bassist Jeff Ament or guitarists Stone Gossard and Mike McCready for smiling wider than usual. President George W. Bush, who the band vilified in song and onstage for eight years, is gone. The group remains a huge touring draw and A-list festival headliner, having grossed nearly $42 million from 51 shows reported to Billboard Boxscore from 2006 to 2008. Vedder won a Golden Globe for his soundtrack to the 2007 movie "Into the Wild." Life is quieter on the homefront, too: Four out of the five band members now have children.

But Pearl Jam is also celebrating because it finally made good on a longstanding desire to release its music on its own, without the aid of a major label. "Backspacer" will come out Sept. 20 in the United States through a creative patchwork of deals with physical and digital retailers, the most prominent of which is a one-off, big-box exclusive with Target. Internationally, Universal Music is the label for the release.

The Target partnership threw fans for a loop when the news leaked in June. At first glance the move seems at odds with a band whose DIY, fan-first business ethic has set it against corporate behemoths like Ticketmaster and AT&T. But as details began to emerge, it became clear that Pearl Jam managed to make a deal that rewards the band and its fans as much as it does the stores that sell its music.

Target agreed to let independent music retailers carry "Backspacer," a first for one of its exclusives. (The album will be distributed to indie stores by the Coalition of Independent Music Stores\' Junketboy division.) "Backspacer" will also be sold on Pearl Jam\'s Web site and at Apple\'s iTunes Music Store.

"We\'ve put a tremendous amount of thought into this, and we\'ve done it in a way that we think will be good for everybody," Vedder says. He understands why some fans may be confused about the deal, but he says, "I can\'t think of anything we\'ve ever done without putting it through our own personal moral barometer. Target has passed for us. The fans just have to trust us."

As Gossard puts it, "If somebody would have said 15 years ago that they were going to give us a great chunk of money and let it be a one-off and not hold us to any strings, we would have said, \'Come on! This is the best deal ever!\' We fought our way through eight records at Sony and J to get ourselves in a position where we could cut a deal to get paid $5 a record, rather than $1.50 or $2. It was the right compromise for this record, and I think it will give us even more flexibility in the future. The fact that we cut out a few other chains - I think it\'s our prerogative to do that. We\'re bringing a lot of smaller stores with us."

Junketboy Distribution A&R executive Scott Register hopes the cooperative nature of the deal will inspire "every artist, label and manager out there that they need to think twice before cutting out indie stores. This is our chance to show that our community - stores, distributors, one-stops - are capable of any size job and of making a difference in the life of an album."

When Pearl Jam ended its career-long association with Epic in 2003, the band wasn\'t yet ready to proceed without label backing. So manager Kelly Curtis cut a one-off, joint-venture deal with J Records for the 2006 release of a self-titled Pearl Jam album, which spawned three rock radio hits and has sold 706,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan. That figure far exceeded the sales of the band\'s 2002 Epic farewell, "Riot Act," which sold 508,000.

Curtis says he was thrilled with J\'s work on the album in the United States, but internationally, "it was a nightmare. Sony had just merged with BMG, and we couldn\'t get anything done." With that in mind, he was confident Pearl Jam could devise a way to distribute its next album by itself in the States, but he knew the band would still need help with the rest of the world.

The first step was conceptualizing a new infrastructure. "We went into it really open," Curtis says, although ownership of masters was a prerequisite. "We always knew we needed lots of partners. It\'s easy to go do a one-off with Target, Best Buy or Wal-Mart. The part that\'s hard is how do you get the other ingredients: the indies, mobile, online, the fan club."

To test the waters, Pearl Jam cut the first mobile deal of its existence with Verizon in 2008, which brought the band\'s legendary live bootlegs to the company\'s V Cast service. The partnership was put together by Michele Anthony, the former Sony Music Label Group U.S. president/COO who was by Pearl Jam\'s side for its biggest successes in the \'90s.

"Our goal was to be able to give the fans access to the music the way they want to access it," says Anthony, who was inspired to kick-start a mobile presence for Pearl Jam after she and Curtis saw how ubiquitous music consumption was on cell phones in China. The mobile bootleg campaign was so successful that Pearl Jam teamed with Verizon again to deliver content from the deluxe reissue of the band\'s debut album, "Ten." The partnership has been re-extended to include ringtones and ringbacks for songs from "Backspacer," which will roll out at a rate of one per week until release date, as well as mobile bootlegs for the band\'s fall tour.

Releasing the album simply through Pearl Jam\'s Ten Club fan organization was out of the question, according to Curtis and Anthony, simply because of logistics. Target ultimately got the nod because, Anthony says, "in our discussions with the big-box retailers, they were really the only one that understood the band\'s philosophy and the need to take care of the Ten Club and the indies and hit other distribution platforms."

Curtis concurs. "I got a call from someone at Best Buy after the Target deal was announced, saying, \'Why did we not get this?\' " he says. "And it was because they would not even entertain the thought of taking care of these other platforms."

Curtis also balked at the waste involved in having to create different versions of "Backspacer" for various partners, a common requirement of retail exclusives. Instead, the album is encoded with Sony DADC\'s eBridge technology, which allows purchasers to unlock extra content when they put the disc in their computers.

The Target discs will link to a virtual "vault" of 11 concerts spanning Pearl Jam\'s career, from which fans can choose two. The band will also create an organic cotton T-shirt to be sold at Target, with proceeds earmarked for the hunger relief charity Feeding America. And in September, a Cameron Crowe-directed TV ad will air featuring footage shot during a private performance at Seattle\'s Showbox in late May.

For Vedder, an avowed vinyl junkie who still savors memories of buying Jackson 5 records as a preteen in Chicago, Target isn\'t exactly his preferred music purchasing environment. "Maybe it will change, but I\'m not going to find the Headcoatees at a Target," he says, invoking the obscure British band with a hearty laugh. "But if they only have 300 records at Target, and you can be one of them, and that\'s how people are going to hear your music, you have to think about that."

That\'s not the only thing Vedder is thinking about, either. While acts like AC/DC and Aerosmith were winning new fans with branded versions of "Rock Band" and "Guitar Hero," respectively, Pearl Jam was sitting on the videogame sidelines. The band finally took the plunge this spring when it made all of the songs from "Ten" available for download on "Rock Band" the same day the reissue hit stores. Curtis declined to discuss sales, but sources at MTV say the "Ten" songs have generated more than 850,000 downloads.

"Backspacer" will also be available on "Rock Band" the day it comes out, and Target has an exclusive on an edition of the album featuring access to download its songs for "Rock Band" on Xbox Live and PlayStation Network. It\'s a precursor to a dedicated Pearl Jam game that could hit stores in 2010. Although MTV wouldn\'t confirm details, fan input is already being solicited on PearlJam.com to determine which live versions of songs from the band\'s catalog will be included.

For radio promotion, Curtis hired a team of indies to promote "The Fixer" at various formats, including former Epic promotion vet Laura Curtin, who worked "Ten" nearly 20 years ago. Alternative, active rock and triple A stations took the lead on playing the single during the week ending July 26, with Los Angeles\' KROQ leading the way with 58 plays, WAAF in Boston with 45 plays, and Seattle KISW and KNDD with 44 and 43 plays each, according to Nielsen BDS.

Industry observers are obviously curious to see how Pearl Jam\'s plan plays out. If successful, it could inspire a host of established bands to try a similar approach, according to Tsunami Entertainment president Bruce Kirkland, who has helped negotiate numerous exclusives between artists and big boxes, including the Pearl Jam/Target pairing.

"Any artist that can tour without support and has a base is well-served by this system," he says, pointing to Wal-Mart\'s deals with the Eagles and Garth Brooks. "For them, the record is a marketing tool for other revenue-generating opportunities. It is a no-brainer. It\'s a perfect deal in that sense. The financial upside is cutting out a lot of the middle pieces. I like the model because it basically puts more money into marketing, which is a big piece missing from labels these days, and there\'s a better bottom line for the artist."

Others are impressed that Pearl Jam has been able to create synergy among such a disparate roster of partners. "They\'re playing ball with the big boys," one former major-label executive says. "This isn\'t like some other bands, who self-released music online and then followed it up at retail months later. They picked major partners, because this is still a major band."

"It\'s a really interesting time right now," Anthony says. "It\'s a time of opportunity where a lot of the distribution and marketing platforms are open directly to the artists. That has never really happened before. Even five or six years ago, it didn\'t matter how big of an artist you were. You could not make a direct deal with Wal-Mart, Target or Best Buy. Now, you can create the partnerships that are right for you."

As Pearl Jam reinvented its business, it turned to a familiar face when it came time to record: Brendan O\'Brien. The band recorded "Backspacer" in Los Angeles and Atlanta with the producer, who also worked on "Vs." and "Vitalogy" but hadn\'t produced a Pearl Jam album since 1998\'s "Yield."

Pearl Jam\'s members quickly realized what they\'d been missing, as O\'Brien provided crucial input on arrangements; played piano, keyboard and percussion; and put together orchestrations for delicate Vedder songs like the acoustic guitar-powered "Just Breathe" and the gut-punch finale "The End."

"He does those melodic things from his musician brain first, and then he\'s able to layer them within the music with his producer brain," Cameron says. "He uses both sets of skills in a way that most producers aren\'t even able to do." O\'Brien\'s efficiency rubbed off on the band, according to Gossard. "We made this faster than we\'ve made any record," he says. "We were 30 days in the studio total, including mix. I think we had 90% of the record cut in the first nine days."

At 11 songs and less than 37 minutes, "Backspacer" is the leanest and meanest Pearl Jam album yet. "At one of our gigs, without flashpots and electricity, there\'s only so much room for those more difficult listening songs," Vedder says with a laugh. "That was one reason why we kept the arrangements lean. The songs come off more like sparkling water than pea soup, and I think that\'s good for our group right now."

"The Fixer" became the foundation for the album after Vedder came up with an edit of an arrangement the band bashed through without him. "My personal interpretation is that it\'s about how [Vedder] makes our songs work," Gossard says. "When someone inspires him, he\'s an incredible collaborator."

Other musical highlights on "Backspacer" include the opening one-two combo of "Gonna See My Friend," a furious Stooges-style garage blast, and the propulsive, Police-y "Got Some," which Pearl Jam premiered June 1 on the first episode of "The Tonight Show With Conan O\'Brien."

On the softer side, "Just Breathe" is a gorgeous ballad based on an instrumental from Vedder\'s "Into the Wild" soundtrack, while "The End" is an aching love song that closes the album on a startling lyric: "My dear/I\'m here/But not much longer."

"You know, I\'ll admit that even I felt some impact myself listening to it back the first time, and not even really knowing where it came from," Vedder says of the song, which he debuted this summer during a solo tour. "A lot of the songs on this record were ones I just tried to get out of the way of, without self-editing."

Vedder titled the album as an homage to an oddly named typewriter key that fell out of fashion 50 years ago. The frontman, who still uses typewriters for lyric writing and personal correspondence, says he got upset when he saw vintage typewriter keys being used as jewelry. "For me it was like shark fin soup: \'You\'re killing typewriters for a bracelet!\' " he says.

Always known for elaborate album packaging, Pearl Jam turned to political cartoonist Tom Tomorrow, whom Vedder met at a 2000 Ralph Nader rally, to create the album\'s visuals. Nine pieces of Tomorrow\'s artwork are scattered across various Internet sites, and fans can drag-and-drop them onto a grid on Pearl Jam\'s site to receive a free download of the track "Speed of Sound."

Pearl Jam will play its first live show in more than a year Aug. 8 at the Virgin Festival in Calgary, Alberta. After a quick four-show run in Europe, the band will then visit Toronto (Aug. 21) and Chicago (Aug. 23-24) before headlining the Outside Lands festival Aug. 28 in San Francisco. Multiple shows in Seattle, Los Angeles and Philadelphia follow in September and October, with the Philly gigs set to be the final ones at the Spectrum.

Also on tap is a headlining slot Oct. 4 at the Austin City Limits festival, plus a run of shows in Australia, New Zealand and Hawaii in November and December. Curtis says the plan for 2010 touring is still coming together and that the band is deciding whether to play outdoor amphitheaters or arenas, which it prefers.

And while they\'re satisfied now, Vedder and his bandmates insist they\'re as driven as ever to keep challenging themselves, both as a band and a business. "You\'d like to be able to go to work and have everything be smooth, but there\'s some weird artistic gene in some of us," he says, expanding on the theme of "The Fixer." "It can feel like a curse, because it makes you push yourself to make things better and not allow them to be easy. That\'s how you get the good stuff."
