Title: Buquebus
Post by: traveler on March 24, 2004, 01:57:43 pm
what exactly is Buquebus?
Title: Buquebus
Post by: Drew_Kingsley on March 24, 2004, 02:06:35 pm
To put it mildly, Buquebus is a young, smart monsquan from old Blubladan.

The lyrics are in the Deuce liner notes...that\'s just about the whole story.  If you don\'t have Deuce, get it!  It\'s $12 online and at the shows, or save some money and get it for $3 in the discount bin at Amoeba Music on Haight Street in San Francisco

Post by: zuke583 on August 20, 2005, 05:35:02 pm
the lyrics seem pretty out there. part of a bigger story, a story in itself? am i an idiot for thinking there\'s  a meaning behind it all?

This is a question that has plagued this fanbase for years now. Buquebus, according to my understanding is part of an on going saga that TPalms is still finishing up. Episode 1 and Episode 2 are part of it, I believe. I am really unsure of the whole meaning but it does have one.

Post by: leith on December 03, 2005, 01:29:41 am
I know they would never have me but lately I am really reconsidering my stance on Rufus vs Buquebus.
The 11/11 Buquebus rocked my world and then lo and behold the next night is a Rufus. So I listened to that and well it just did not come close to the Buquebus from the night before.
It seems to be that way more and more. Buquebus is just mutating into a monster while Rufus stays pretty much the same.
I wonder what COULD be done w/ Rufus though.
 hmmmmmmmm.

Team Buquebus excepts all those who wish to become one of us. First, publicly denounce Team Rufus and join us as we dance in circles in Blubadon Square as a bunch of young Monsquans.

Buquebus is IMO on of the best songs they have.

no doubt i converted to team Queebs after 11/11 and 11/12. they dont really compare for me now. i just wish we had a live version of Buquebus with the sound quality of Rufus on Bona Fide. the best would be a released live version of Deuce, have the fans vote on their favorite live versions of every tune and put together a cd (or i guess it would have to be 2 discs) that i would ALWAYS listen to. or if the band has enough money in the next few years to release a couple of HIGH quality shows ala Live Phish. sound quality is so fuckin key.

ditto to the first PB song i ever saw live too. but there\'s no doubt now that i cant wait to hop in my car for a long drive and listen to another sick Buquebus. ill throw on Rufus right away for people who have never heard TB. but those who know anything about the band or have an extensive collection of good live music today, Buquebus it is. i cant get enough, especially the Gladys > Buquebus from Madison. call me a fair-weather fan, cuz Buquebus is definitely on a winning streak as of late.

They\'re two totally different tunes, I love them both.  Rufus is more of a train (picking up pace until you hit break neck speed!)  and Buquebus is more of a space funk kinda tune.  I love them both but I would prob have to go with queb

i\'ve been listening to the buquebus from 4/30/04 a bunch lately, and i have to say it\'s probably the best thing i\'ve heard from tb. the trancey first jam is the teets.

are there any standalone buquebuses (buquebi?) that can possibly top this version? if there are i\'d like to know.

@ Buquebus

In old Blubladan
A young smart monsquan
Was born with an itch
Diagnosed wanton
An itch that no one seen
Not this bad is what I mean

This uncontrollable urge
To make some elements merge
Not like fire and water
Coincidentally pure
Bringing back the feeling
Against the royal extreme

Buquebus you can\'t do what you want
A man we call leader told you not
To have fun or act this way
Don\'t disobey
It\'s not okay
So says the king himself
You have to stop shooting off your guns
Buquebus you\'re having too much fun
Our doctors are gonna kill your itch
You son of a bitch
You make me sick
Now get the hell out of my face

Buquebus (x6)

Buquebus left the king\'s face
Brought to a doctor\'s place
Where then he felt so aghast
As they abash and attempt
To remove his itch and his rash
And they fail
Because it lies with his face
For he is chosen to be
The most radical spirit to save
Blubladan

He escapes from the hiss
Ready to spread his bliss
In any way shape or form
Not wanting to conform
First step the ultimate kiss
That\'s what created the itch

It starts with a person
A special loving person
Or persons for that matter
You see what I\'m getting at
For now a subsitute
In his little breakfast food

An advertisement is what he needs
To spread the itch and break the king
Buquebus composes a little jingle
It hits the charts as a number one single

Eat your breakfast \'cross the nation
Psychedelic fun sensations
With your woman\'s one way to feel them
Natural way is meditation

Eat your breakfast \'cross the nation
Pancakes and bacon
Psychedelic fun sensations
Elated nation
With your woman\'s one way to feel them
Good vibrations
Natural way is meditation
Levitation

Blubladan is eating them right now
Can\'t do anything but shout about

We\'re gonna shout about
Hey, hey, hey, hey

ok, i need to get something off my back.  first of all, i listened to all the suggestions you guys made and my favorite is 11/11/05.  But also, that version in the studio on youtube is sooo friggin tight too, but i dont think that was live.

Anyways...i noticed in the one recording that I have of Matt playing buequebus electric (Syracuse 9/22/07), he\'s missing something that Jordan used to have that, in my opinion, used to MAKE this song.  This would be the awesome synth sounds that jordan used to use during the "techno jam" part.  Im sure everyone who knows this song knows what sounds im talking about...they are incredible and in my opinion were the essence of that jam segment and the reason why this song is my favorite breakfast song.  If you notice in the syracuse recording, matt pretty much just stays with a wurley electric piano sound during this jam, and i think it lacks from how it used to sound when jordan played with the band.  I dont know if matt has a synthesizer that he uses, but im hoping that on this run he busts it out on the buquebus techno jam because it would really help build up this jam.

Any thoughts?

P.S....matt is an AWESOME addition to the band..dont think im busting on him...its just this one concern that i have.

the major difference i think is experience 7yrs vs. 7 months. i think once Matt gets the catalog down he will feel more comfortable with what goes on up on stage and will feel better about exploring some new sounds. i was actually thinking the other day that maybe a boorang looper or something like that for Matt would be killer.......

I don\'t think there is any reason for concern, brah.

Give Matt time and he will have this nailed. Good pickup though, never even thought about it.

ive definitely noticed this and i agree. hopefully in time he will find the mesh-synth and use it tastefully. most of the time that matt has hopped on his synth in recent jams, i get annoyed with his sound. i definitely think it\'s growing pains that will, indeed, be worked out.

jordan used to play a fantastic subtle organ and synth that people didnt realize was thee undertone of a lot of jams. matt is much more aggressive and pronounced. you get more energy with matt, and it comes with a lack of cohesiveness at times.

above all, we must realize how short his time has been with a band that has a huge, very difficult, catalogue. at first i had a hard time with matt, now im just very excited to watch this band grow and get down to some serious business.

and i love hearing that 11.11.05 is your favorite Buquebus. that was a special, special night.

DUDEEE has anyone mentioned the 9/4/2004 buquebus yet?  its sooo awesome, i just listened to it for the first time...i feel like the more rediculous effects the band uses on this song, the better.  the effects in this version are extremely bisco-like and spacy sounding, i love it.  matt really needs to bust out those nutty synth sounds soon.  tim uses a lot of effects in this version too, which i like as well.

standard queeb is now 30+ minutes with a jam> begining, a progression into a spacey section around the 25 minute mark, that then goes into another jam section or a segue

weeeeeeeeeeell... that\'s an exaggeration.

a quick peek at \'08 queebs which we actually know the lengths of (and not going by "d00d that queeb was 3 hours!!1!" in setlist threads) yields this:

01/26 - 26:14
02/29 - 12:07
04/04 - 29:02
04/12 - 22:58
04/19 - 23:21
04/25 - 19:47

04/04 was the closest to what you describe, but still not 30+ minutes.

26+, 29+, and canton and sterling were both well over 30 no dude brahs about it.

so yea i guess standard is a slight exaggeration but its still a trend.
[-]
50% [/-] 75% of queebs so far in 2008 were over 25 minutes long, and one in four was approaching the 40 minute mark.  And there is definitely a pattern like I said in the three massive ones. Its definitely taken a step forward since its revival.

also 4/12 is over 25 minutes with the intro jam and 4/19 is 27+ minutes with the drum solo so really its

6 out of 8 over 25 minutes
2 of those 6 well over 30 minutes
with two doozies thrown in.

01/26 - 26+
02/29 - 12+ (encore...cut short)
03/27 - 35+
04/04 - 29+
04/12 - 25+
04/19 - 28+
04/25 - 23+ (with special guests)
05/24 -30+

anyway.......standard upstate queeb is now 30 + minutes ;) boardering on the half hour mark elsewhere

damn brah good research. i wish the hell sterling queeb was taped becuase if i could have a listen or 2 i think it would defintily have been right up there with puppet house 05(still my favorite queeb ever) and the kinetic playground jams, much different, but top notch.  honestly this is the one song that when you hear the first notes, the rest is a giant mystery, defintily becoming a instant favorite song for me, esp. after the sterling version.  im not sure they have any other songs where they can really go the distance like this one.

Puppet House \'05 with (moe.down Queeb close behind for purely personal reasons).
Honorable Mention to the 12/10/05 Queeb it was so fucking hot a Subwoofer caught on fire!

There may be longer ones or maybe even jammier but the quality of playing (esp. pouring from Tim) is something I have yet to hear them match with that song.

I am gonna have to say 07-07-2006, the last Beardslee Castle!! not only was it Jordo\'s "Last Show" but the Buquebus was practically the whole third set if you figure the space city affair>jam>Buquebus>drum solo was really all one song. Also it was like 2am, i had a tent to go back to, and i was balls deep in some psychedelics.

"Newb" me all you want but I think i\'m doing Ok. im somewhere over 30 shows and assuming we can get these guys some more venues I\'ll hit my goal of tipple digits. I\'ve seen The "original" Breakfast, never the psychedelic breakfast, or at least when they called themselves that. The Trio produced some of the most ridiculous guitar/keyboard at the same time nonsense, and unbelievable intensity. but its all about now, i\'m waiting for next weeks Buquebus or the one after that, because it\'s only gonna get better.

i must admit that i have not been to a single puppet house show, but if someone would like to point me in the direction of some epic archived shows, i would be much obliged.

For me, the top 3 would have to be:

8/12/00 (Yargur\'s Farm / Greenstock) - The boys played for almost 4 hours during the first set.  The band that was playing after them decided they didn\'t want to play and they wet back for another 2+ hours in which everything they played was jammed to the nth degree, including Buquebus.

2/11/00 (Toad\'s Place) - First time played.

12/9/00 (Amoskeag Brewery / NH) - Buquebus was the 2nd set opener blew open that set.

I\'m sure that there are longer version and more synthed out db sounding versions; I prefer the early versions that changed from show to show...

 Is this the same show where leith\'s mind was completely melted after Utica and he was sitting in a corner, with two jackets and mittens FREEZING his ass off?!  Couldn\'t get much hotter in his mind, I guess. ;)

YEP! I still have not been as cold as I was that night.
I had actually caught pneumonia and didn\'t know it.
Still had a blast once I got out of that chair.

So the band needs to send these guys a sweet recording of it and see what happens. Why the hell not?

Funny, but I had ridden the Buquebus before ever discovering The Breakfast. The jingle they play on it is ubiquitous in Buenos Aires, and I was half expecting the song Buquebus to incorporate it into the mix.

Mind you, this was before I had my breakfast served....
