BitTorrent - What you need to know. (*UPDATED 01/05*)
« on: July 24, 2003, 12:07:00 pm »
hello all..

just a little tutorial for those of you who want to get into this great thing called BitTorrent.

The Client

in order to upload or download via BitTorrent, you need to have a BT client installed. i recommend this one. download and install.

Downloading

once you have the client installed on your computer, you\'re ready to download! just click on a .torrent file that\'s offered here, and your client will open. choose a location to save your download, and you\'re on your way!

Important!! - when you\'re done downloading a show, please leave your BT window open for at the very least, 24 hours. the more people who have their windows open, the faster other people are able to download! please do your part!!!

Uploading/Creating Your Own Torrents To Share (**UPDATED 01/05/2004**)

I\'ve modified this section to make the most of out PB BitTorrent experiences, and guarantee that the shows we host get the maximum exposure possible.

(-) The pbfans.com BitTorrent Tracker is no longer in existance. I\'ve taken it down permanently as part of this effort.

(-) From now on, please seed all PB BitTorrents through the etree.org Community Tracker.

(-) If you do not already have a login/password with etree.org, create one here (it\'s free).

(-) After you have an account set up with etree and have a show you want to share, go to their upload page. All the instructions on how to upload a torrent to their tracker are on this page!

(-) They use a different software to create their torrents, called TorrentSpy (we previously used CompleteDir). I don\'t see why you couldn\'t continue to use CompleteDir, though I haven\'t varified this yet (plus TorrentSpy seems easier anyways).

(-) After you\'ve uploaded your torrent, it\'s time to announce it, as it says on their upload page. You should, of course, announce the torrent here in the Spunk forum (attach the torrent file to your post, just like before).

Other places you should announce your PB torrent:

SharingTheGroove.org
etree forums
etree mailing lists

...and any other music site you\'re on that might enjoy some PB.

In the long run, everyone will make out better with this change - more exposure for the band, new people introduced to PB, and faster download speeds for everyone involved!

thanks for sharing, and joining the PB BT Revolution! :)

updated original post with a new recommended client.

i suggest that anyone using BT downloads this new client. seems to be much more efficient. it can be found here: http://home.elp.rr.com/tur/download.html

no need to uninstall your current client; this one will install right over it. you will, however, need to close any BT windows you have open during the install.

I was going through the steps to upload a bit torrent ... the step above says to click on the torrent file and "save as." That\'s when I got the error message.

ok, i find it my duty to make a post to pimp Azureus.

i\'ve been using Shadow\'s BitTorrent client for a while now, and just tried Azureus the other day.. it rocks.. you can \'queue\' up several torrents at once, all in one window.. you also pretty much never have to look at a tracker ever again, since it tells you how many total seeds/peers there are AND how many you\'re connected to.. it also uses far less resources than Shadow. check it out.

How do you get this to open and not use Shadows? I set it as the default client, but it doesn\'t work. Any suggestions?
