hello all..
just a little tutorial for those of you who want to get into this great thing called BitTorrent.
The Client
in order to upload or download via BitTorrent, you need to have a BT client installed. i recommend this one (http://home.elp.rr.com/tur/download.html). download and install.
Downloading
once you have the client installed on your computer, you\'re ready to download! just click on a .torrent file that\'s offered here, and your client will open. choose a location to save your download, and you\'re on your way!
Important!! - when you\'re done downloading a show, please leave your BT window open for at the very least, 24 hours. the more people who have their windows open, the faster other people are able to download! please do your part!!!
Uploading/Creating Your Own Torrents To Share (**UPDATED 01/05/2004**)
I\'ve modified this section to make the most of out PB BitTorrent experiences, and guarantee that the shows we host get the maximum exposure possible.
(-) The pbfans.com BitTorrent Tracker is no longer in existance. I\'ve taken it down permanently as part of this effort.
(-) From now on, please seed all PB BitTorrents through the etree.org Community Tracker (http://bt.etree.org).
(-) If you do not already have a login/password with etree.org, create one here (http://bt.etree.org/login.php) (it\'s free).
(-) After you have an account set up with etree and have a show you want to share, go to their upload page (http://bt.etree.org/upload.php). All the instructions on how to upload a torrent to their tracker are on this page!
(-) They use a different software to create their torrents, called TorrentSpy (we previously used CompleteDir). I don\'t see why you couldn\'t continue to use CompleteDir, though I haven\'t varified this yet (plus TorrentSpy seems easier anyways).
(-) After you\'ve uploaded your torrent, it\'s time to announce it, as it says on their upload page. You should, of course, announce the torrent here in the Spunk forum (attach the torrent file to your post, just like before).
Other places you should announce your PB torrent:
SharingTheGroove.org (http://www.sharingthegroove.org)
etree forums (http://forums.etree.org/)
etree mailing lists (http://wiki.etree.org/index.php?page=MailingLists)
...and any other music site you\'re on that might enjoy some PB.
In the long run, everyone will make out better with this change - more exposure for the band, new people introduced to PB, and faster download speeds for everyone involved!
thanks for sharing, and joining the PB BT Revolution! :)

updated original post with a new recommended client.
i suggest that anyone using BT downloads this new client. seems to be much more efficient. it can be found here: http://home.elp.rr.com/tur/download.html
no need to uninstall your current client; this one will install right over it. you will, however, need to close any BT windows you have open during the install.

a new version of Shadow\'s Tracker was released yesterday after i posted the update.
please make sure you have the latest version (5.7.1) here: http://home.elp.rr.com/tur/download.html

Hey bro, will this effect my half done or whatnot downloads?
I mean can I leave em there amnd download this program, and continue with them where they left off.
BTW I got this link from STG.
Thanks again for the heads up.
A Grateful canuck.
-
yeah i posted this on stg...
this is for use of my tracker, in case anyone has any (new) shows that they want to announce, they can point the torrents to my tracker.. this won\'t really do you any good for anything you\'ve already started.. sorry..
-
When I do the save as of the bit torrent file, it says "Error, Problem connecting to Tracker -- HTTP error. Not authorized." What do I do??
-
which torrent are you downloading? just leave your window open and it should eventually connect.
-
I was going through the steps to upload a bit torrent ... the step above says to click on the torrent file and "save as." That\'s when I got the error message.
-
sorry i messed up your thread ;) I got it all figured out now.
-
trying to upload a torrent file ( using a mac bt client 3.3 to generate the torent file) with fetch and i keep getting connection refused when trying to connect via ftp. any problems, or just not macintosh friendly?
-
not sure.. if you\'re still having trouble, just email me the torrent at dave AT pbfans DOT com. thanks!
-
I know Matt does Furthur and Gray does the Groove
Do you still upload shows on etree. maybe you and Fitz could focus there that way we\'ll have shit popping up all over the place??

ok, i find it my duty to make a post to pimp Azureus (http://azureus.sourceforge.net/).
i\'ve been using Shadow\'s BitTorrent client for a while now, and just tried Azureus (http://azureus.sourceforge.net/) the other day.. it rocks.. you can \'queue\' up several torrents at once, all in one window.. you also pretty much never have to look at a tracker ever again, since it tells you how many total seeds/peers there are AND how many you\'re connected to.. it also uses far less resources than Shadow. check it out.
http://azureus.sourceforge.net/
-
How do you get this to open and not use Shadows? I set it as the default client, but it doesn\'t work. Any suggestions?
-
Just uninstall shadow\'s bt
-
Hi.. i got the program that you said was awsome.. azureus... but i can\'t get it to work... can you help me out?

you can start by uninstalling azureus and forget everything you know up until this point. then install shadows\'s BT client.
-
I have the Shadow\'s BT but i want to try Azureus for a change...
-
azureus is ser.ive been using it since it was recomended by peck. what cant you get to work?click on the torrent, and azureus should autpmatically open.if not, check your documents or wherever it might be.its pretty cake.when its done it drops to the seeding area.i love it.
-
i forgot, maybe if you dont uninstall the shadow,it dosent know to use azureus instead..
-
You may have to update your Java script (found on Azureus web site)
And yes, I uninstalled Shadow\'s BT
-
When i deleted Shadow\'s BT it still didn\'t work... what wont work is that.... when i double click the icon nothing happens....
-
My java is up to date...
-
try opening it up from your programs instead.or try restarting your comp.maybe because your trying to switch it its fuckin up..
-
Nope didn\'t work...
-
uninstall Azureus, restart your Bill Gates love child, then reinstall Azureus. You might have a dll incapatability issue going on. I had to do some weird combo like this as well
-
Edit/ addition: but it IS worth it Azureus kicks ass!!
-
Nope, uninstalling it and then reinstalling it didn\'t work...

I LOVE AZUREUS! Thanks for getting me all set up Dave! On my last computer I had been using Bit Tornado, just got Azureus, and it really is great. I highly suggest it.
Thanks Dave. You should have multiple Dave Pec appreciation threads considering everything you do for all of us.
