Title: Download help!
Post by: Spacey on January 08, 2005, 01:46:22 pm
Can anyone head me in the right direction for downloading and buring cd\'s of the internet?
I just got cable internet and am totally ignorant of how to go about using it properly. Is there software that I need for shn or bit torrent downloads to convert?
Any help getting me to the promised land of downloading HQ shows from the internet would be of great help.
Thanks to all who can help a brother out.

Is there any recommended software I should use?

What is the best software available for conversions?

I figure, etree is where I will be downloading from most.

1. A lot of people swear by Azureus, but it\'s Java based and may cause you hassles. Bittornado is pretty popular and there is still the official BT client. Front page of etree.org has a good link for beginners.

2. As freddie says, FLAC Frontend and MKWACT are essential and recommended also is MAC (Monkey Audio Codec) for the odd show on various trackers. You will also need to download the FLAC and SHN plug-ins for Winamp, which remains the best listening software IMHO. The best bit is that all this software is free!!

3. Download from:
* bt.etree.org is great for jambands, but not much else.
* thetradersden.org is a new site which is started to grow in number. It was created by some of STG\'s old moderators.
* archive.org is essential for getting your breakfast helpings - The Breakfast has its own section  separate from Psychedelic Breakfast. They also have the biggest Dead collection and an ever-widening variety of bands of different genres.
* bt.easytree.org is where I get most non jamband shows. Though the site is not taking new members (limited to 100,000), they have a waiting list system. You won\'t lose out by getting on it and will be informed when you\'re active. There\'s a real community there whether you\'re into metal, folk or psychedelia etc.

EDIT: Additional BT site at everydayjones.com/BitTorrent - looks pretty good.

Hope this helps.
