Title: If you REALLY like the Breakfast....
Post by: Steffmo on June 06, 2006, 10:37:45 pm
Please pay some attention to this.

I\'m going to make some necessary statements here.  they don\'t apply to everyone, and certainly not to everyone all the time.  But there were some incidents at The Stone Church both in the club and the hotel that have taken a lot of management\'s time to smooth over, and have tarnished the bands reputation up there a bit.

And certainly...whatever was said here has beeN said to the band and crew.....

But i would personally appreciate it if everyone would try to police their own and thier buds behavior at shows.  Stuff like trashed hotel rooms, too many folks on the guest list, and alchohol in areas of the club where it is not allowed  do get bounced back to us in the form of complaints from the hotel to us and the clubs promoters, threats of responsibility for either physical damage or overtime charges for staff to cleanup, and a geeral sense from the venue that "are these guys really worth it"

Obviously, I\'m not your keeper, so you all can do what you want.  I just want you to know that someone has to pay for it, and if that was to happen it would either be the band or perhaps myself.

So...could we all be a little more responsible.  And, lets keep in mind that this stuff draws attention to some of you who MIGHT happen to be underage drinkers.  And you don\'t need the spotlight.

So lets all be moderate, cool, and take care of each other so no one gets hurt physically or legally.

Geez....I hate sounding like a facist.

Did I miss something after I passed out?

It would be a shame if Stone Church really decided they didn\'t want Breakfast to return... but IMO they\'d have to be trippin\' to do such a thing.

I did leave an unpaid tab there because Price Is Right made me forget all about it. But I called \'em up and left a msg to straighten it out, so hopefully I\'m not contributing to the bad/evil/rowdy Breakfast crowd.

I dunno Steffmo, I totally respect your position especially if its to the point you feel you gotta say something about it.... but then again, if/when Breakfast gets bigger and attracts more fans these kinds of behavior will likely only increase as well.

But I appreciate you reiterating the idea that even crazy weekends w/Breakfast are not totally consequence free-- and that if somebody\'s gotta pay it might end up being the band we came to see.

For real tho, did Stone Church actually act like they don\'t want Breakfast back?

The venue is definitely concerned and the hotel raised a fuss.

Of course I know that as the band gets more popular more of this will happen.   THAT however doesn\'t make it necessary, or right, or something i want the band to ber known for.

So I\'m commenting on it now.  Probably won\'t be the last time I do.

But the folks here are generally cool, intelligent, and civil...so i don\'t have a problem bringing it up.  I\'m not asking to anyone NOT to have fun.  I\'m just asking that you be considerate of the other humans you share the planet with.  Fact of the matter is that kind of behavior is probably left to a couple of underpaid housemaids to clean up.....and they have enough crap to deal with.

I don;t think I\'m asking a lot, and yes....it very musc does reflect back on the band.  This business is hard enough.  This just makes it a little harder.

I\'ve never stayed in a hotel after a Breakfast show,
:pauses, waits for boos to subside:
so let me ask a dumb question-
how the hell does the hotel know what their rowdy guests are in town for?

I wasn\'t there (probably a good thing now that I think about how much more debachary my actions could cause) but I\'m guessing the room was in the band\'s name.

Okay, I get it.  These shenanigans were going on in the band\'s hotel room.
Damn, get another room under an alias and party there.  When I played rugby we were fond of calling ourselves the Yale Squash Team, who incidently is not welcome back at VA Busch Gardens.

that wasn\'t even that bad compared to other nights I\'ve spent out. now that i think about it, that was nothing compared to other nights, there was some ruckus though.

i don\'t know if that\'s necessarily true, but when you\'ve got a bunch of rooms near each other and everyone arrives at the same time and causes a ruckus, it\'s not hard to put 2 and 2 together..

There was def a good deal of noise in a pretty nice hotel the room in question had rice all over the floor, bottles everywhere, a broken bottle in the bathroom, and I\'m sure there was vomitus in atleast one room, and there were def a couple people who got a little out of hand.  I have certainly seen worse, but that\'s not the point. It really is too bad that something like this happens and is reflected poorly on the band.  It just makes me glad the room in VT had absolutely nothing to do with the band, shit it wasn\'t even the same hotel.

I think the only issue with the room in VT was noise and maybe a leaky fish tank.

Does this sound familiar to anyone? A la part of Phish\'s breakup? The backstage/aftershow scene got too big to handle.

What the band really needs to do is find friends in every city and hang out at people\'s houses post-show...haha

Steffmo, you\'re in the right for bringing this up. We all love to have a good time, but the fact of the matter is you\'ve got to respect the band enough to help them out, not possibly damage their reputation with venues or other people in the biz. I can\'t really speak from first-hand experience because I\'ve never truly participated in a late-night, but from an outside standpoint, if we want their fanbase to grow, TB has to maintain good business relationships.

This is how I thought everyone operated all the time, thus my confusion as to how it got back the band.
In New Haven may I recommend the Hotel Duncan for a low hassle (and slightly shady) stay.  Stumbling distance from Toad\'s w/ a kickass Thai place downstairs.

broken glass in the bathroom - come on guys...that\'s something that should be cleaned up!!  I\'ve raged many a hotel room across this country, but really if you ask for some garbage bags, a broom, etc. and do your part to pick up a little, this kinda complaint should not happen.  Not saying you have to scrub the place down, but it\'s not that hard to leave the place reasonably not too trashed.  Did anyone get charged for extra cleaning??

I really can\'t believe that the band got shit though.  If it wasn\'t their room, how are they held responsible?  it could\'ve been totally unrelated partiers there for some other function...

My suggestion would be to find another hotel for the next Stone Church show.

160 bucks for the cheapest room... hell, if that room didn\'t happen to be right across from the bands room I might consider that a bad deal ;)

bah, shit.. i\'m gonna throw on my flame suit here and play \'responsible adult\' for a minute..

i think a little something more should be taken away from this than \'get out before the disaster is discovered\'.. i\'m not saying that that\'s what you were implying mandler, i just want to make a point..

if you look at the threads talking about these hotel parties, you\'ll notice a trend of people basically bragging about what kind of condition the hotel room was left in. i mean come on - that\'s just wrong. can we try to grow up a little bit and maybe clean up after ourselves?? seriously - if you have the ability to "rage all night", then you definitely have the ability to put garbage in a garbage bag.

kindm\'s mentioned something in another thread about \'leaving only your footprints\'. it\'s a great mentality, which more people should try to be in. why is it that the same people that go to heady festivals and are very mindful of cleaning up after themselves and keeping the grounds clean, have no problem shitting on a hotel room where some poor sap making $5 an hour has to spend the entire next day cleaning up after them. and don\'t tell me "it\'s their job", cause it ain\'t - just like it ain\'t the hotel\'s job to host your parties.

don\'t get me wrong - parties are fun. i like fun. and shit, cleaning up a mess is pretty fuckin\' far from fun.. but cleaning up someone else\'s mess is even worse. get a garbage bag going early on in the night. throw your empties back in the box they came out of. dump the ashtray in the garbage bag. dump the cooler in the tub, not on the floor.. it all seems really simple. you don\'t have to make the beds or hang your towels up - just try to maybe treat the place like it was your own. if everyone does their part, the individual cleanup effort is extremely minimal.

parties = cool.
slobs = not.

my $.02...

flame away.

Let\'s clear up some tiny things.

1st I agree with davepeck up cleaning up. It sucks to put a room under your name knowing it is going to be destroyed.

For the most part, the rooms that we stay in contain nothing more than beer cans with some butts lying around. I quickly cleaned up after the CODA show in Ardsley because the room was under my name. It takes 5 minutes to clean up.

For the most part, outside of the fish tank in the Burlington hotel, we leave the hotel rooms in decent condition. Beer cans to pick up for the most part they are all clumped together.

The hotel in NH had someone not thrown rice across the room  or been too drunk and broke a bottle in the bathroom, would had been an easy clean. However, I think the real problem had to do with the few people who were too drunk and way too loud. Bringing attention to the entire situation.

But, I do agree bringing a trash bag is a great idea.

If the band manager and Dave Peck ask me to do something for the good of the band, it\'s done.  No questions asked.  And this request is simple: just clean up your own mess.  That\'s easy enough!  I might not be the loudest, rowdiest, or messiest person at the party most of the time, but if I\'m in there and not cleaning anything, I can only be making it messier.  We can do a better job of cleaning up while continuing to hang out latenight.  Three tips:

1.  Have a trash bag or box out all night.  Make sure the first few bottles and trash items go in and people will realize that\'s where trash goes and follow suit.

2.  If it\'s your room, you have to step up your game in the morning before you leave and clean up any remaining objects that were not supplied by the hotel.  That just comes with the territory, so step up and handle it.  Most likely there will be several people to help out.  In the Amherst days when we had 300-400 people over a night it took all five of us six hours to clean up.  Lots of other people host Breakfast parties at their house too and have to clean up.  But nobody complains.  It just comes with the territory of hosting parties and the cleaning is a labor of love in the name of supporting The Breakfast.  That\'s the outlook you have to have when it\'s your room.  You gotta step up.

3.  I\'d love to see more people get into the habit of hosting afterparties at their house/apartment, and consequently everyone else looking for a houseparty first while they\'re traveling and only doing the hotel thing if there\'s no other option.  If you live within 25 miles of a venue, consider having people over.  It\'s a great way to get to know everyone and it\'s always a better time than the hotels.

no worries dave I agree, I\'ve taken part in many a Breakfast hotey late nights, and usually on the ride back some says something about "I\'d hate to be a maid at that hotel"  Well let\'s try and make so tis not so bad for them. Hey man I\'m no angel, but let\'s take this as our que, as alcoholics call it a "moment of clarity", no matter the reason this discussion started some very valid points have been brought up.  It is no longer about covering the bands ass, it\'s about not being an asshole.  So yes for the future I think we should all make a concerted effort.

justin, what\'s the problem man?  i would think you of all people would understand the concept of thinking of people other than ourselves and having a little consideration.  even if this was a gross overreaction on the venue/hotel\'s part, what is the problem with bringing up the idea of cleaning up after ourselves?  A maid\'s job is to make the beds and replace the towels and tidy the place up so it looks nice for the next visitor.  A maid\'s job shouldn\'t have to be to clean up broken glass, vomit, cigarette butts, empties, etc.  I guess my point has less to do with this incident if i should even call it that, but it\'s more of a general call to think about our brothers and sisters more.  It feels good to help someone else even if it\'s as simple as not leaving a hotel room a disgusting mess.  I\'ve been to a number of bfast hotey parties, some more wild than others.  We\'re all good hearted people, we just sometimes dont completely think things through, which is common and I dont hold it against anyone.  It\'s just that maybe this backlash the band has gotten from the venue can serve as an opportunity for us to better ourselves as human beings.  Now Justin, I dont think that\'s retarded or stupid at all.

I\'m glad your all so adamant about maids right and the not giving them extra work to do.

I personally agree. I try to clean up and leave them a tip every time.

What I think is retarded and idiotic is the band manager coming on .info and scolding fans because a band hotel room got messed up.

Its not a big issue and making it into one because some uptight hotel manager threw a hissy fit is just total clown shoes.

but klout, he didn\'t scold anyone. he very politely asked folks to use their heads a bit more so that the band is unduly affected. whether anyone was overly uptight or not, the reality of the situation is that the band caught flack for the fans, they could potentially lose out on being able to play a great venue for them. whether the hotel/venue has a point is completely irrelevant. and again, its not like steffmo was condemning anyone or saying that the folks there were being evil or anything, he just asked to be more mindful of the potential consequences of their actions.

wow, weird, i dont remember seeing you at the show or hotel....

honestly, there were a handful of people there, and a handful of people who know what went down, steffmo EXCLUDED. i think your efforts would more effective and appreciated at finding the band some shows that start later than 5pm....

i\'m all about not being an asshole (which is why i put a separate non party room in my name) and i think its absurd that fans have to get completely  blamed for something that was partially our fault. sure, we *ALL* partied, and the room was a mess, but don\'t just assume its just the fans right away!!! honestly, this is unjustified defamation....

be a good person, clean up your mess, and do onto others as you would want done onto you.

trust me, EVERYTHING WILL BE OKAY.

Well Klout....I actually find your position to be totally.....clown shoes.

I simply don\'t want the band...who\'s best interests I am supposed to look out for, to either bet billed for hotel damages or to accumulte a reputation as a band that trashes hotels.  I didn\'t accuse anyone specific.  I simply asked the group as a whole to give it some thought and to keep in mind the fact that all of our actions have an effect on others.

Yes, I admit its a 60\'s sort of throwback concept....having some oncern for the next person....but i was brought up that way and I\'ll stand by the concept.

While I totally agree w/ the spirit of this thread. I think it is a bit much.
Come on now the band and fans are completely seperate entities when it comes to hotel rooms.
I can understand if fans trashed the VENUE but hotel rooms? PFFFFFT!!!!!!!

How can any hotel ASSUME that any room that was trashed NOT in the Band\'s name was caused by said band\'s fans?

As for policing fans @ shows isn\'t that venue security\'s problem?

Oh and having the grassroots team named The Wild Pack just goes to show the mentality of the band and it\'s fans.

That is to rage it as hard as possible @ every Breakfast show.

Shit has happened, is happening and will continue to happen w/ this group.
Thanx for reminding us about personal accountability but alcohol is a hellava drug!
