Title: Guilty Pleasures
Post by: jocelyn on November 02, 2004, 01:02:25 pm
No, this thread is not about THAT. sheesh.

It\'s more of a survey. I think everyone has at least one band/musician/singer/whatever whom they really like, even though you\'re really not supposed to. A band that most of your peers don\'t take seriously, causing much jeering when they discover you like said band. Mine is Billy Joel. *wince* I know, I know. But I really enjoy Billy Joel. Anyhow, who is YOURS?

Conversely- the band that you SHOULD like but can\'t stand. A band that most people think is pretty solid. Mine: Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Tom Petty makes me want to drown myself.

I really like Billy Joel\'s catalog from the 70\'s - 80\'s.  Great singer/songwriter!

I have plenty of quirky pleasures.  Too many to name.  I will throw a few names out to disgust you all:

New Kids on the Block

Can\'t stand but are popular:

Neil Young, Bob Seger, Bruce Springsteen,

I do have to compliment myself on a diverse collection of music.

The PB family definitely helped expand my music interests and I have many of you to thank!

Is Bob Seger still Popular?  Other than his song on a commercial I have not heard that name since I was maybe 16.

My only "guilty pleasure"  is Eminem.  Though I have grown to tolerate Dave Matthews a little more.

I really don\'t like Neil Young, and I\'m actually not a fan (or is that "phan") of Phish and most jam bands.  I\'ve also grown tired of Bob Marley.  Maybe I just need to hear a song that isn\'t "No Woman, No Cry" or "Redemption Song" for once.

Dude Drew I totally went through a phase where I was tired of Marley also but I realized it was mainly due to the same songs I was hearing much as you suspect. Try to search out some of the live shows w/ Tosh and Bunny man the music they create is truly revolutionary Reggae.

Big fan of: Salt N Pepa, Boyz II Men, Sisters With Voices (SWV), TLC, Fela and Femi Kuti, DMB, Train (their first album is really good), Rent soundtrack, Enigma, Queen, Ani DiFranco, Dead Milkmen, GWAR, Slayer, and the spectacularly underrated Bjork.

Way below the norm in my love for: moe., Widespread, reggae in general, Heart (sorry Diana), The Beatles, Tom Petty, Bob Seger, Blue Oyster Cult

My Guiltiest Pleasure...

Madonna.  From her first album, the self titled Madonna to Music, there is something about the queen of the universe who is now calling herself Esther....

Shouldn\'t like, but I do:  Duran Duran....Rio, Hungry Like The Wolf, Girls on Film....awesome shit.

Should like, but I don\'t:  Too many to mention, because all the bands I dislike, I REALLY dislike with a passion.

Would have to agree with that one - always professed publicly to hating them when they came out - was a big Motorhead, Judas Priest and Beatles fan at the time so synth pop bands were a No- No - but can\'t resist the first album. The live album is also a stormer.

As to what I should like, (he writes, reaching for the fire blanket) I\'m afraid despite all the press saying they\'re great, I can\'t stand Outkast and also dislike Eminem with a passion - in fact I find most rap-based "music" completely uninspiring, boring and monotonous,  the only exceptions being Spearhead, who I love, and some early Run DMC and Beastie Boys.

Good call Steve, I don\'t own any Madonna, but she\'s pretty amazing how she always puts out exactly what America needs, from Like a Prayer to Ray of Light.

And Dawg, good call on Hungry Like the Wolf, that\'s my karaoke song.

A band I haven\'t been impressed with is Medeski Martin Wood.  Either I haven\'t heard enough of their music or it\'s really nothing special to me.  Can\'t seem to get into it.  My friend gave me a couple disks and I tried to give Shackman another chance today.

id put them way above those bands..medeski alone is the best in the buisness.hes an amazing musician, and nobody could pull off what he pulls off..billy martin is a pretty ser drummer.i put him in the same category as stanton moore, but maybe not as ser...and chris wood is a pretty killer bass player too.when they play together, actualy tunes, nobody could touch them...the only thing about mmw, compared to breakfast,is i wouldnt be able to see them night after night after night..they become a bi tboring, but i think thats because they lack vocals...give them another chance..i havent picked up their new album, but have read only terrific things about it..

Oh my lord... MMW... one of if not the best in the "scene" right now. I agree with Fred, almost untouchable. I would say Chris Wood is the weakest link in the band. But he is still pretty killer...

Thank god they don\'t have vocals, that would sound terrible.

I don\'t understand how they can go in a category with STS9. First of all, neither of those two bands can play jazz. MMW is also way more innovative with much more difficult, and interesting, music... way better "jamming"... SO MUCH more original. STS9 and Particle I\'m sure would suck on MMW\'s big fat penis.

It\'s official:  MMW\'s Shackman does absolutely nothing for me.  I will give other MMW albums a chance to be fair.  There has to be some magic in the other albums or live performances that this album doesn\'t have.  First to claim Shackman gets to keep it.  I will be down for some Breakfast either on the 24th or the 26th.

Please take it.

Sorry joc & fred... MMW is weak.  No vocals, NO GUITAR, and worst of all, a stand-up bass... what a fucking tool.  You can\'t be in a rock band with a stand-up bass!  Rock, jazz, whatever you want to call them... they are monotanus and boring... a few rungs on the ladder below Particle, and way below STS9.

I band needs vocals and GUITAR to be good? That\'s the most absurd thing I have heard all week. So you think jazz sucks then? (When there is no guitar or vocals?)

Stand-up bass = TOOL? How can you not hear how much deep, thick sound a stand-up bass has sometimes, and sometimes it can be so gentle.... How can its resonance not sound beautiful to you? And, how can you not appreciate the skill it takes to play one? Not to mention making a stand-up sound funky, which is no easy feat.

Monotonous= playing the same thing over and over and over. Lack of variety. MMW does nto fit this description, IMO.

MMW are not a rock band.

How can they be below STS9? I hope you are not referring to skill as musicians, because if you are, I would have to say that you have no ear for talent. I can understand if it\'s not your thing, but if you really think that STS9 and Particle are better MUSICIANS than MMW... well...

Just to add some more fuel to the fire, I don\'t like MMW either!! Very nearly put them in my contribution to this thread.

Have downloaded a couple of shows and wasn\'t impressed at all - so unimpressed tha I didn\'t even bother to burn them as trading material. Got nothing against jazzy improvisation without rigid structures - hell, I love miles\' fusion period and also stuff from the classic Canterbury era eg Soft Machine and Matching Mole; for many years, too, my favourite musician was Rick Wakeman, a man not known for giving the guitar a lead role, but mmw don\'t do it for me at all. Great musicians, but, yes, I will resist the temptation not to use the word, monotonous.

Still, to each their own.

I agree with the guy who said Shostakovich rocks and Mozart SUCKS.
In terms of Jam bands I like the now defunct OMINOUS SEAPODS! If you don\'t have Matinee Idols by the Ominous Seapods, you gotta get it.

Band that I should like but don\'t: "The Dead" in their current incarnation, and esp. Ratdog.  I like the original Grateful Dead, but the last "Dead" show I saw kinda sucked.  They need to go quit.  As for Ratdog, they are a joke.  Just a worse than average dead cover band is all they are - I can see shit like that every monday and wednesday night at bars around here. But Jerry always rocked and still does.

hey al, I just read this thread for the first time in a while. I only have a burned copy of shackman, so I\'ll grab the album off you since no one else wants it. I love MMW, but I also think ornet colmans free jazz is the best piece of music ever commited to tape and that orchestral favorites is zappas best album, so most people don\'t agree with my tastes.

Television-wise, my guiltiest pleasures when I am home to watch.  The Rachel Ray (talk show), and The View (I like Rosie O\'Donnell and am not afraid to admit it)

I accidentally stumbled onto the View.  It follows Rachel Ray, and one morning I had it on and I found myself laughing a lot.  Sometimes it was something funny that was said by Rosie or even Barbara Walters.  The young girl on there is pretty hot, but pretty stupid. Another thing that cracks me up about the View is when all the women start talking at once.  Its like being in a henhouse.  The older woman that thinks she is so funny actually sucks and is my least favorite.  But I do like Barbara and Rosie.  I have always liked Rosie.  She is quite a funny comedian.  Obviously she has had a pretty unorthodox career, but I admire her ability to overcome all the crap, and the fact that many people have tried to ruin her career, but she is still standing....or squatting if you must.

Kim used to watch it before i would go to work when my schedule was 12-8PM. I cannot stand that show. I can feel the testosterone being sucked form my body everytime they speak.

Why is everyone so obsessed with Rachel Ray? I don\'t get it, I never have. To each their own their, I know plainandsimple digs her hard but I don\'t get it. I prefer Giada De Laurentiis over Ray any day!

P.S. - The 80\'s sucked Steve. If you feel strongly about the 80s, we have nothing more to say to each other.

I agree.  She speaks her mind, which is not always a smart move, but she owns her statements & really stands up for her beliefs.

My guilty TV pleasures are "American Idol" and "Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?" :out:

First off, the everyday italian is quite the hottie.  However there is something very simple and natural about rachel ray that does it for me. (mainly her thick and juicy thighs and small yet sexy chest) you dont get it, dont worry about it...

regarding the 80\'s, I agree that they kind of sucked balls in many ways, but this thread is a guilty pleasure thread, so I am allowed to like that shit, even if it is shit, because it is a guilty pleasure....

Well, although I was physically born in the 80\'s, I use the chinese concept of first conceived as my birth date which takes me into 1979 around Labor Day. Thats how much I hate the 80s. I was "husky". The only thing I have that I can\'t change from the 80s is the formation of Phish and it hurts to think of the 80s that way.

nevermind I found it

He spent two seasons as a backup quarterback for the Redskins, and was thrust into starting action in 2003 when then starting quarterback Patrick Ramsey was injured. The high point of his career to date came on December 7, 2003, when he completed 13 of 19 passes for 154 yards in leading the Redskins to a 20-7 win over the New York Giants. He threw two touchdown passes and no interceptions in that game. The following week he had the ignominy of recording the lowest possible single-game passer rating (0.0) in a 27-0 loss to the Dallas Cowboys under the playcalling of Coach Steve Spurrier. Hasselbeck was 6-for-26 (23%) for 56 yards with four interceptions in that game.

It was the redskins not Seattle. I guess I heard the name Hasselbeck and just assumed it was the same guy in Seattle.

I like crappy 80 pop songs. I sing along to them all the time. I blame being too poor as a child to afford a walkman like I wanted, let alone tapes so until I was probably 7 or so I only listened to the radio.

But despite what some people who will remain nameless think, wham sucks ass. What a horrible fucking band.

However, I don\'t think Warren is weak.  I just think he shines best when covering other artists material and his slide guitar work has always impressed me.

aka allman bros. im guessing your talking about...yeah hes alright with them (D. Trucks in my opinion blows him away on slide work, however)

Good album. I heard she wrote the whole thing in like a week.

That may not be true.

ok, some for me:

I cannot stop listening to that fucking Royksopp song. Like, come on, it has been months now, and I still isten to it every time I get overly drunk.

Also, I am still pretty addicted to the Knut song.

I also still listen to Bone Thugs N\'Harmony. hahahahahaha.

And I still hate Tom Petty, that creepy motherfucker.

Im not sure if that is true, but what i do know is that almost every song on the CD was a demo track...that is, the major record company did not have to bring in a producer and touch things up or add "thickness" at all on almost every song (this is VERY customary to do with major record labels).

movies now also? I actually like grease, for which I blame my older sister who played it (not kidding) almost every afternoon after school when I was in elementary school for like a month straight. When you\'re 4 years younger you have no say over the remote control. Same could be said for dirty dancing, also thanks to her.

Totally agree with Tears for Fears.  Loooove Head over Heels.

If we are doing movies,  Pump up the Volume and Heathers, both with Christian Slater.  Okay, add Gleaming the Cube.

^^^ those are awesome movies. i had a VHS taped from tv of Gleaming the Cube. Pump Up the Volume is great, check it out if you haven\'t seen it

Heathers is a great movie.

While they admit that these songs were "hard to leave off", the four above undoubtedly deserve to be on list (...he argued as if this list mattered for anything). Maybe the Gin Blossoms song is more of an after-the-fact popular song, but No Rain is probably one of the top ten songs of the 90s (keeping in mind that we\'re talking popularity here, not how many times they change time/key signature).

Also, I just noticed that "Nothing Compares 2 U" is both in the top ten and on the "hard to leave off" list... because clearly VH1 was too good to hire me back when I applied.

not me by any means, but I just had someone at work try to explain to me how Ronny Dio is the best vocalist ever in rock and challenged me to name anyone as good as him. I suggested tool, radiohead and henry rollins. He said henry rollins was decent, not great, the others suck. "Neither radiohead or tool ("or pod and such bands") have any substance and can hardly hold a tune let alone have harmony or dynamics."

I agreed to disagree.
Title: Guilty Pleasures [MERGED]
Post by: wildcoyote on July 22, 2009, 02:38:28 pm
For what he does Dio is tops.  You really would be hard pressed to find another vocalist with the same range and power.  His range is around 5 or 6 octave, and the man could easily be working in opera if that was his chosen path.

Thom Yorke has laid down some beautiful vocals, but his strength is how he uses his limited ability to best suit the song.

Henry Rollins was one of my heros growing up, (and a super cool guy, I\'ve actually had the chance to hang out with him) but he\'s a pretty one dimensional vocalist.

MJK is unique and impressive.  A favorite of mine, but no Dio either.

But seriously Paul, what do you know about vocals? You listen to Rush.
Title: Guilty Pleasures [MERGED]
Post by: FrankZappa on July 22, 2009, 03:13:44 pm
I knows what I like and that\'s what I listen to. to each his own. I just thought it was a really interesting conversation about dio. As for rush, for example, a lot of people compair rush to dream theater because they\'re both prog, but i can\'t stand that guys voice.
