Title: The 2007-08 College Basketball Thread
Post by: booztravlr on November 13, 2007, 10:32:38 am
So, hopefully there are some UConn or BC fans on this board to counter all my Syracuse talk.

I have some pretty high expectations for Syracuse this year. Some really talented Freshman (Jonny Flynn and Donte Green) who are going to see a lot of playing time. I know it\'s early but both of them logged 36 minutes last night. Flynn was 6-7 from 3pt., 5 Rebounds, 9 Assists and 28pts, which is a Syracuse Freshman debut record. The team is really young with one senior who won\'t play much and two juniors who will start. The rest of the upper class just rides the pine. I couldn\'t afford season tix this year but I will be scalping a bunch of games. I\'ll also be at the Syracuse/Villanova game in Philly Superbowl weekend. Unfortunately Syracuse doesn\'t play at UConn this year.

I\'ve been seeing games since 1982 when I was about 1 years old. I just wrote this story on another board so I may as well copy it here too. In 1982 at one of the first games my parents took me to I was in one of those baby carts that they can carry around since a stroller would be a pain in the ass at the Dome. It was right around my first birthday (February) so I am sure it was an important big east game. While in the baby seat in the stands I was just wearing an orange Syracuse shirt and a diaper. All of a sudden I take a monster shit, only it\'s all liquid and full of fury. It goes out the sides of my diapers and all over the couple in front of us. My parents were so embarrassed but honestly what can you do? The couple got up and just walked out of the dome. They said I was laughing a little after it happened. Poor people. Hopefully Cuse won that night.

Now that\'s how you start a thread!

Bastard! I went to that game with two of my friends. Worcester is only 4 or so hours from Syracuse. We (the two of us not driving) drank a bottle of scotch on the car ride along with a couple beers since we would be arriving just before tip off. Most of the crowd was UVM fans and the orange representation was very thin. That didn\'t matter to us. We were pumped to be there and see them play. Unfortunately they played like shit that night. My dad said he would pay for our hotel room for two nights if they won the first game. Doh! We drove back to Syracuse after that game in one of the most silent car rides I\'ve ever been apart of. I\'ve seen them play in Worcester, NYC, DC and Philly and they\'ve NEVER won when I\'ve attended a road game. Talk about shitty luck. I figure I\'ve well over due for a win this February in Philly.

I\'m heading down to Philly this afternoon for the Syracuse/Villanova game which is tomorrow at 12. Hopefully I finally get to see them win on the road. If they lose again that would put me at 0-4 for Syracuse road games and my parents might disown me. If you\'re actually going to watch it, I\'ll be wearing a orange ski mask and the brightest orange fleece jacket you\'ll ever see. I\'m sitting behind one of the hoops in the second tier so maybe they\'ll pan up there for some free throws.

GO CUSE!

Finally got that road win! Up next, UConn @ the dome on Wednesday. Should be a great game, as they always are. I got a PBR tall can at River St. to bet against any UConn takers.

I don\'t know how you could think that \'Cuse has any chance vs. UCONN.  I was just looking through Syracuse\'s win/loss record just now...wow!  They suck!  Losses against UMass and Rhode Island at  home? You think you\'re going to beat UCONN?  Really Booztravlr?  Really?  The biggest win you have is your last game against Villanova (who has now lost 4 straight).  I mean, right now if I am looking at their record, \'Cuse looks like they are going to be sitting out of the NCAA tournament for a second str8 year if something doesn\'t change quickly.  Where are you quality wins?  Where is your rationale for thinking this game is even going to be close?

So my point is that you stand no chance vs. UCONN.  I\'m not going to River St. Jazz, but i\'m sure anyone who is going would be happy to take you up on that bet.  Pretty much money in the bank.

UCONN!  HUSKIES!

Damn. Had some chances tonight but couldn\'t get it done when it counted. That 9-0 run late in the second all but sealed the deal for UConn. Looks like I owe you two some beers! Hopefully you\'ll make it out East for some shows NickNels. BennyBoomers, I\'m sure we will cross paths in the near future. Hopefully Cuse and UConn play each other in the Big East tourny again this year, where we\'ve owned you the past 2 years. Good luck until then.

Cheers to the best conference in all of college basketball!

F Duke, go UNC! I can\'t stand Paulus (Syracuse native).

Hopefully I\'ll get a chance to head back East sooner rather than later, and when I do I\'ll make sure to hit you up for some PBR tall boys Booztravlr.

I will give \'Cuse a lot of credit in this game.  I thought they were just going to give it up after we got up about 10 late in the game, but they didn\'t.  And Johnny Flynn!  Are you kidding me?  He looked for calm and poised when he hit those clutch 3\'s late in the game.  He definetly looks very mature for a freshman.  I was even a little nervous when he got that last 3 away.

I always like it when I can talk shit about other teams and sing UCONN\'s praises, but in all honesty I am not a Syracuse hater.  I\'ve always been an Orange fan and really like the UCONN/\'Cuse competitive rivalry.  It\'s almost always close, hard fought, and still classy (which probably has a lot to do with Boeheim and Calhoun).

Only teams I really don\'t like are Pittsburg, BC, and of course Duke.

Great game Saturday! The Dome was packed (+31,300). Big road test tonight at Louisville. Hopefully they can carry some momentum from the Georgetown game. Greene needs to break out of his road game slump and take care of business tonight.

Ugh, can\'t say I didn\'t see that one coming. Since it was a 7:00 game I decided not to go. Very glad I made that decision. The story of the season was Syracuse blowing leads. I almost believed they were going to hold on to their lead in the second half but they got tired and kept missing 3 foot shots. They probably missed 10-12 3\' or less shots throughout the game. Due to a lack of bench players (2) they just can\'t play a complete 40 minutes game.

Everyone is coming back next season including Devendorf and Rautins plus a couple solid recruits. At least Boeheim will be able to sit his players when they start slacking off instead of suffering through their lazy ways...except for The Belgian Express (#12), he\'s the man!

Let us never speak of the 2007-08 Syracuse Men\'s Basketball season ever again.

Let\'s hope that KU can keep the magic alive for one more night.  They\'ve gotten a lot of monkeys off their back this year.

- Losing to K-State
- Getting past the first two rounds in the tournament
- Beating Roy Williams in such a pivotal game

If they can win tonight, Self will accomplish what Roy Williams was unable to do for over decade and what none have been able to do since Danny Manning played for KU.  So I\'ll say it one more time - ROCK, CHALK, JAYHAWK!!!!!!!

They are pretty evenly matched. I\'m guessing it\'ll come down to free throws and who gets into foul trouble. I\'m rooting for Memphis due to the fact I thought Davidson should have beaten Kansas last weekend.

Did rock chalk jayhawk become popular because people in Kansas couldn\'t think of anything else that rhymes with hawk?

Since the opening weekend of the tournament they\'ve shot 74, 83 and 87% from the line. If they keep it at 74% or more they should be in good shape.

Hope this clears the history of the chant up.

The chant was first adopted by the university\'s science club in 1886. Chemistry professor E.H.S. Bailey and his colleagues were returning by train to Lawrence after a conference. During their travel, they discussed a need of a rousing yell. They came up with "Rah, Rah, Jayhawk, KU", repeated three times. "Rock Chalk"—a transposition of chalk rock, a mineral that exists in western Kansas and similar to the coccolith found in the white cliffs of Dover—later replaced the two "rahs", after an English professor\'s suggestion.[1]

U.S. president Teddy Roosevelt called it the greatest college chant he had ever heard. Kansas troops have used it in the Philippine-American War in 1899, the Boxer Rebellion, and World War II. In the 1920 Summer Olympics, Albert I of Belgium asked for a typical American college yell, and gathered athletes replied with the chant.[2]

They shot 87% from the line because Rose and Douglas-Roberts shot ALL 23 team free-throws.

I\'m rooting for Memphis, I like them and Kansas annoys me. I\'m also a UNC fan. Either way hope it comes down to the last possession.

I grew up in Chicago so images of Michael Jordan in Tar Heel blue were spoon fed to me. I know plenty of Kansas fans, but definitely not as many as Duke or UNC fans.

Also, Derrick Rose is a Chicago kid, won 2 state titles in a row 06/07. It\'s really cool to see him taking over this tourney right now and I hope he continues to tonight. Incredible athlete and so unselfish, an almost impossible combo to come by these days (esp. at 19 yrs. old).
